Dolly Parton’s Make-Up Artist ‘Almost Fainted’ When She Saw the Major Change Parton Made to Her Hair
While the public rarely sees Dolly Parton without a wig on, the people close to her have seen her natural hair. The hairstyles she likes to achieve are easier to achieve with wigs, and she damaged her hair by continually dying it. Earlier in her career, though, she wore her natural hair long. When she made a major change to it, she nearly caused her make-up artist to faint.
Dolly Parton made a surprising change to her hair
Parton has been wearing wigs for years. She said that she began to rely on hair pieces as soon as she could.
“I always wore my hair all teased up,” she wrote in the book, Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. “Whenever that style started, I was the first to get my hair all poofy. Then as soon as I could buy those hairpieces and wigs, I wanted them. For one thing,...

Netflix is bolstering its entertainment formats unit with a big new music competition series.
The streamer has ordered Building The Band (w/t) as it shifts its focus away from cable-esque fare to competing with the major broadcast networks for the next The Voice or American Idol.
Check back tomorrow for an interview with new Netflix reality boss Jeff Gaspin on the company’s new strategy.
Building the Band seeks to discover the next great music group without bandmates initially meeting face-to-face. The series brings together 50 of the most talented singers to compete for a chance to form their own band without ever seeing each other. All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit. What will happen when the bands finally meet and… looks, choreography, and style come into play?
The series comes from The Wall producer Remarkable Entertainment, which is part of Banijay UK.

The Wall Street Journal spoke with multiple sources who corroborated the conversations between the SpaceX founder and former president, saying Musk now calls Trump directly from his cell phone several times a month.
Although the talks are preliminary — and sources caution they could fall through — Trump has expressed interest in finding a way to make Musk more involved with policy, possibly involving border security or the economy,...

Few Hollywood stars can truly claim to be in an echelon above the renowned A-list, but George Clooney has effortlessly risen to such heights. David Gilmour announced the first dates of his Luck and Strange tour last week, but he told Uncut that it’s going to be a very different tour from his previous ones because of an “unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the Seventies.” He went on to explain that he was willing to play Floyd songs from the Syd Barrett period of the Sixties, and his own era fronting the group in the late Eighties and early Nineties.

La La Land received one of the most memorable do-over moments in Hollywood history when the film was incorrectly announced as the Best Picture winner at the 2017 Academy Awards, which was actually presented to Moonlight. But the film’s leading man Ryan Gosling would rather go back and change a more crucial, aesthetic error about the movie: it’s promotional poster.
“La La Land. There is a moment that haunts me,” Gosling recently told The Wall Street Journal Magazine when asked if there were any particular roles he would want to do over.

David Gilmour has confirmed his first tour dates in support of his newly announced album, Luck and Strange.
In October 2024, the former Pink Floyd member will play six shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London. They mark his first confirmed live performances in eight years.
Registration for a ticket pre-sale is ongoing through May 8th, ahead of a general ticket on-sale on Friday, May 10th via Ticketmaster.
Previewing his upcoming tour dates in an interview with Uncut, Gilmour expressed a desire to avoid playing ’70s-era Pink Floyd material. “[Other decades] might be better represented,” he explained. “I mean, at least one from the Sixties. The one we’ve done in the past is 1967’s ‘Astronomy.’ That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There’s songs from [1987’s] A Momentary Lapse of Reason and [1994’s] The Division Bell albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as...

Fahri Yardim as Larssen and Henriette Confurius as Ulrika, in the German crime series “Roots of Evil.” Courtesy of MHzChoice
German TV gives us this complex crime series, “The Roots of Evil,” (originally “Die Quellen des Bosen”) that straddles more genres than most even attempt. Set in a small community in 1993, it’s a murder mystery involving child abuse, long-buried emotional scars, arcane ritualistic symbols, political machinations (some left over from before The Wall was torn down a few years earlier), supernatural (?) elements, multiple family entanglements, and a large dose of bigotry in a product that blends standard contemporary procedurals with heavy Gothic overtones. The result is a highly bingeable production in six 45-minute episodes.
Ulrika (Henriette Confurius) is the lead detective, working with newly-arrived partner Larssen (Fahri Yardim). While hunting in the forest, Ingrid (Cloe Heinrich), a strange teenager from an even stranger family, finds the body of a...

Will Paramount Global end up looking for a new dance partner, or will David Ellison’s Skydance Media get to clinch a deal and celebrate with a victory dance? Hollywood and Wall Street insiders alike are wondering about questions like these as the future of Shari Redstone’s media and entertainment empire hangs in the balance.
After all, Skydance remains in an exclusive period until early May to possibly finalize a two-step deal to acquire Paramount Global and its controlling shareholder National Amusements (Nai), led by Paramount non-executive chair Shari Redstone. According to a CNBC report, citing sources, Skydance will meet with Paramount management and start its due diligence process next week.
The structure of the proposed transaction has caused concern among some investors, though; they worry that a deal would benefit Redstone but dilute non-voting shareholders of Paramount. The company’s stock closed at $11.97 last Friday but has fallen around 10 percent since then.

Madonna‘s live performances take a lot of inspiration from the theatrical rock of the 1970s, so it makes sense that her “provocative performances” started with one song by The Who. In middle school, she performed one of The Who’s most famous songs in school and was shunned by her peers. Eventually, that sort of controversy would work out in her favor. However, this doesn’t mean Madonna ever looked at herself as cool or a trendsetter.
Madonna said her brothers introduced her to songs by The Who and The Rolling Stones

It was one year ago on Friday that The Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich was detained in Russia on espionage charges that the U.S. government has called “fiction.”
On Thursday, Gershkovich’s detention was extended by another three months, according to the Journal, as he awaits trial.
The Journal said in a statement, “It’s a ruling that ensures Evan will sit in a Russian prison well past one year. It was also Evan’s 12th court appearance, baseless proceedings that falsely portray him as something other than what he is—a journalist who was doing his job. He should never have been detained. As Kevin Hart sat in the audience with family and friends for The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, there were many jokes about his height, quips about his wealth and jabs at his productivity.
What there was very little of was anything political, reflecting Hart’s own style that tends to avoid such topical humor.
Chris Rock did have one moment, though.
“The Mark Twain Award this year. If Trump wins, next year will be the Mark Fuhrman award,” Rock said.
As the audience laughed, Rock added, “It’s going to be nothing but banjos up there.”
He also was among the comics who did a bit of roasting of Hart. “Look at that smile,” Rock said. “You got that second wife happiness.” Hart, surrounded by his wife and kids, laughed.

HBO just dropped two trailers for the second season of House of the Dragon, and the world has been obsessing over it ever since. Releasing two trailers with two different sides of the Dance of the Dragons, the marketing strategy is quite brilliant. But we are not here to talk about marketing strategy.

Shigeichi Negishi, the Japanese engineer that created the world’s first karaoke machine, has died of natural causes at the age of 100.
Before his culturally significant invention made its way around the world, Negishi was running a consumer electronics assembly business called Nichiden Kogyo. Eventually, as The Wall Street Journal tells in their obituary for Negishi, the entrepreneur was struck with inspiration in 1967 and worked to create a machine that would provide a live backing track to sing over. He and his staff at Nichiden Kogyo then wired together a microphone, speaker, and tape deck, and tested it to success.
This contraption became the prototype for the Sparko Box, which is credited as the first commercially available karaoke machine. Negishi placed the instrumental tracks on an eight-track cassette and included lyrics in a booklet. The term ‘karaoke’ itself emerged years prior in Japan to describe these instrumental backing tracks, and...

In early Series Mania business, Europe’s Beta Film has pounced on international distribution rights to “30 Days of Lust,” a half-hour dramedy from Munich’s Trimafilm, in which a couple, high-school sweethearts but now knocking 30, experiment with 30 days of free sex.
Beta Film has also shared in exclusivity with Variety a first clip from the eight-part series which world premieres in International Panorama Competition at next month’s Series Mania, a section whose value is rising fast as companies seek to leverage TV festival selection as a sign of distinction in a still hugely crowded fiction TV marketplace.
In the clip, from the early going of Ep. 1, Freddy (Linda Blümchen), a pharmacist, and Zeno (Simon Steinhorst), an art restorer, hit a party given by an obnoxious acquaintance of Freddy’s from college.

A highly amusing, albeit scathing New York Times restaurant review of Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen & Bar that went viral in 2012 is being used by attorneys acting for the Times in their lawsuit against OpenAI to illustrate just how destructive the new technology could be to the future of journalism. When prompted about the opening paragraphs of critic Pete Wells’ review, entire passages are lifted verbatim by ChatGPT. “Did panic grip your soul as you stared into the whirling hypno wheel of the menu, where adjectives and nouns spin in a crazy vortex?” Wells had written. Those sentences and several other paragraphs were copied directly from the pages of the paper and then regurgitated by the AI system, per the lawsuit.

Disney, Fox Sports and Warner Bros. Discovery are teaming up for a sports streaming venture set to launch this fall.
Details like pricing are still coming into focus about the service, which will pool resources among three of the biggest owners of sports rights. One aspect yet to be determined is how the new venture will coexist with linear TV broadcasts.
Made available directly to consumers via a new app, the new service will also let subscribers bundle the product with Disney+, Hulu and/or Max.
A formal announcement about the initiative, released within minutes of initial press reports about it, said it will feature the NFL and other major professional sports leagues, plus tennis grand slams, combat sports and college sports.

What makes the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) so endearing beyond its penchant for experimentation is an atmosphere that’s joyful and devoid of stress or self-importance. That was evident at this year’s festival, inside theaters where it seemed like the experience was about sharing cinematic pearls and not about arranging financial deals. The film selection was once again a delightfully uneven mishmash of bold stories with, perhaps, a through line having to do with our complicated relationship to otherness.
In Ulaa Salim’s Eternal, this otherness takes the shape of the Earth itself and of a woman’s body. These two are metaphorically linked through the figure of a fracture, which appears as a sign of the end of times after an earthquake in Iceland cracks the Earth open, and is poetically mapped onto the body of Anita (Anna Søgaard Frandsen) when she and Elias (Viktor Hjelmsø) first have sex.

At last night’s Golden Globes, Jared Leto earned some laughs for poking fun at his reputation for Method acting, joking that he had been getting into the mindset of an award-presenter for weeks. The bit got some good laughs, but today, a new conversation about Method acting has emerged thanks to Natalie Portman, who described the approach as a “luxury women can’t afford.”
The comments arrived in a new interview Portman gave to The Wall Street Journal, in which she explained that, though she’s gone above and beyond to prepare for roles, she’s never employed Method acting. “I think it’s honestly a luxury that women can’t afford,” she said. “I don’t think that children or partners would be very understanding of, you know, me making everyone call me ‘Jackie Kennedy’ all the time.”
It’s true, Portman has done some serious prep work in the past.

“You broke my heart.”
That’s what former Marvel Entertainment chairman and CEO Ike Perlmutter said to Bob Iger, according to The Wall Street Journal, when Iger made it clear in 2015 that he was not going to name veteran Disney executive and Perlmutter favorite Jay Rasulo as his eventual successor. (He anointed Tom Staggs instead, and Staggs was out the following year. Being a potential successor was hazardous duty at Disney, at least in those days.)
Iger’s relationship with Perlmutter went sharply downhill from there and last March, after incrementally stripping Perlmutter of his duties at Marvel, Iger ejected the contentious billionaire from the company altogether. Even before that happened, Perlmutter had backed his friend and Palm Beach neighbor, Nelson Peltz, in his quest for a seat on Disney’s board, which Peltz and Perlmutter argue is too cozy with Iger to be effective.

Mark Harmon wasn’t NCIS creator Don Bellisario’s first choice for the show. But Bellisario was quickly sold on Harmon after seeing the actor’s performance in The West Wing. His acting on the political drama even informed how Bellisario would end up writing Gibbs.

Harmon was being looked at for the potential lead role in NCIS from the beginning. Casting director Susan Bluestein remembered that a lot of big names were being floated around for the NCIS lead role. These included the likes of Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Clive Owen. But Bluestein was one of a few executives that had her heart set on Harmon.
