15 Directors Who Never Made A Bad Movie
Image
Even the best directors can end up with a clunker now and then. Maybe they had a grand vision that was destroyed by studio interference, maybe their actors weren't up to snuff, or maybe things just didn't coalesce on screen the way they had imagined. There's no shame in swinging for the fences and missing. But there are a storied few directors out there who defy the odds and simply don't have a single bad film to their name. "Failure?" they ask. "Never heard of her."

Now, this isn't to say that all of their movies are on the same level of excellence -- that's just plain impossible. Even amongst these elite filmmakers, the quality of their efforts vary. But what we can say, in our humble opinion and with Rotten Tomatoes receipts to back us up, is that each and every director on this list may have made films...

Viola Davis' G20 Remains Rotten After Rt Score Gets Big Jump (& Audiences Are Less Than Impressed)
Image
Viola Davis is known for critically acclaimed projects, but she decided to switch things up and go for a more popular type of project. She ended up headlining the Prime Video action film G20, which was not a huge hit with the critics.

In the action film, Viola Davis plays the U.S. President, but even with her dedication and talent, the movie was plagued with negative reviews. G20 debuted with an abysmal score from the critics, but it had hope for a better audience score. Following its release on the platform on Apr. 11, G20 saw an unprecedented rise in the critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it maintained its "rotten" badge while failing to impress the audience.

G20 debuted with a 33% rating from the critics on the review-aggregator website, but as more reviews came in, the score started improving. The film now has 53% from the critics, an astonishing 20-point upgrade.

Viola Davis Goes Full Bruce Willis in Prime Video’s High-Stakes Action Flick, “G20”
Image
Looking for a truly original movie with a plot that keeps you guessing? Well, you won’t find it in Prime Video’s new release, “G20.” However, if you’re in the mood for a fun, predictable action movie—the kind you can watch without having to think too hard—”G20″ delivers guaranteed entertainment. It’s one of those movies that, precisely because it’s predictable, remains enjoyable, and its formula continues to be used time and time again.

Starring the acclaimed Viola Davis as U.S. President Danielle Sutton, the film throws the audience headfirst into a crisis that threatens to destabilize the global order. Set against the backdrop of the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa, “G20” weaves a narrative of terrorism, betrayal, and the unwavering determination of a leader resolved to protect her family and the world.

The Plot: A Summit Under Siege

U.S. President Danielle Sutton,...

G20
Image
The premise of G20 is inherently silly. There’s no getting past it. It might as well be called ‘Viola Davis: Action President’. Because this is a movie where Viola Davis is not just any Potus — her Danielle Sutton is arguably more combat-ready than her own security detail, forced to spring into action, take down the baddies, and save several other world leaders when a G20 summit in Cape Town is hijacked by crypto-bro terrorists. America, fuck yeah!

Frankly, it should veer on the side of bad-stupid. Instead, solid action, zippy pacing, and the undeniable star power of Davis herself tips G20 onto the right side of good-stupid – an undemanding but entertaining throwbacky romp that takes itself just seriously enough. While the material here is much lighter than, say, Widows or The Woman King, Davis attacks it with much the same gusto. She’s believable as both President and tactically...

Despite the huge success of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel is said to have refused to increase Carrie Coon’s salary for Endgame.

Although you may not have recognised her under all the digital makeup, Carrie Coon cut an imposing figure as the villainous Proxima Midnight in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. Brought to life with lavish helpings of motion capture, Proxima was the adopted daughter of the equally hulking Thanos, memorably played by Josh Brolin. Coon didn’t return for the following year’s sequel, Avengers: Endgame, however, and there’s a reason for that: a dispute over pay.

This is according to Carrie Coon’s husband, the actor and playwright Tracy Letts, who talked about Coon’s interactions with Marvel on The Big Picture podcast. According to Letts, Marvel approached Coon to reprise her role for Endgame, and the actor, pointing to Infinity War’s $2bn global take, asked whether...

The Marvel Character You Likely Didn't Realize The White Lotus Star Carrie Coon Played
Image
Carrie Coon is a gift. Ever since she made her Broadway debut as Honey in the 2010 revival of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," she's been one of the most sought-after actors for the kinds of roles that are reserved for performers who have that extra oomph factor. It's an ineffable quality. You just know it when you see it, and Coon possesses it in spades. She was transcendent on television as the grieving Nora Durst in "The Leftovers," the dogged sheriff Gloria Burgle in "Fargo" season 3, and would-be New York City socialite Bertha Russell in "The Gilded Age," and has also been sensational in movies like "Gone Girl," "His Three Daughters," and "Lake George." Coon is both an invigoratingly versatile actor and an arresting presence regardless of her character's demeanor.

When Coon was cast for the third season of Mike White's acerbic actors' showcase "The White Lotus,...

What’s Coming to Disney+ and Hulu in April
Image
April showers… don’t matter if you’re sat inside watching TV. The Disney Bundle™ ensures that this is possible in perpetuity, with the entire libraries of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN available in whichever permutation serves your lifestyle.

This spring, Disney+ continues the rollout of “Daredevil: Born Again” and soon welcomes the return of “Andor” Season 2 (and achieving the rare astrological phase in which both Marvel and Star Wars are active on the streamer). Plenty of shows and movies will also join the Hulu library; the Emmy-winning original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns after a three-year hiatus with its sixth and final season, and FX will premiere the limited series “Dying for Sex” starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate (based on the podcast from Molly Kochan and Nikki Boyer).

Top Pick: “Andor” Season 2

The Emmy-nominated (and IndieWire-beloved) series from Tony Gilroy returns for its second and final season this spring,...

Liam Neeson Has One Condition For Starring In Movies Now
Image
Liam Neeson has appeared in over 100 feature films since making his big-screen debut 47 years ago in an adaptation of John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress." He spent the 1980s making his bones via supporting performances in high-profile movies like "Excalibur," "The Bounty," "The Dead Pool," but it was his lively portrayal of a hell-raising hill person in the Patrick Swayze revenge vehicle "Next of Kin" that made Hollywood perk up and take notice. The following year, Sam Raimi cast Neeson as Peyton Westlake aka Darkman, but it wasn't until Steven Spielberg entrusted the Irish actor with the title role in "Schindler's List" that he was off and running as a movie star.

When Neeson surprised moviegoers in 2008 by thriving as an action star in "Taken," he leaned heavily into the bit. Two sequels followed, as did "The A-Team," "Unknown," "Non-Stop," and "Run All Night." For more serious-minded fans of Neeson's work,...

Why Liam Neeson Felt Embarrassed By The Script For One Of His Biggest Hits
Image
When the trailer for "Taken" first started making the rounds in 2008, no one thought it was terribly out of character for Liam Neeson to star in a straight-ahead action flick. With films like "Darkman," "Rob Roy" and "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" on his resume, the 1993 Best Actor nominee for "Schindler's List" certainly seemed comfortable making genre movies. The surprise was the five years that led up to it. After failing to snag a well-deserved second Best Actor nomination for "Kinsey" in 2004, he segued to supporting parts in "Kingdom of Heaven," "Batman Begins" and "Breakfast on Pluto," which suggested he was either getting passed over for lead roles, didn't fit the star type for whatever was being offered, or entering the character actor phase of his career.

After the moody Western "Seraphim Falls" failed to catch on with moviegoers (despite the intriguing pairing of Neeson and Pierce Brosnan), next up was "Taken.

Liam Neeson Regrets Starring In One Of His Best Crime Thrillers
Image
Liam Neeson is, if nothing else, a very candid interview subject. Sometimes he's candid to a problematic fault. Regardless of how you feel about the man, however, you cannot accuse him of giving canned answers, which is what renders too many interviews unworthy of a reader's time.

With a film acting career that spans over 40 years, stretching back to his portrayal of the knight Gawain in John Boorman's Arthurian "Excalibur," the Irish-born Neeson has put together a career that prompts many questions. He went Hollywood early, and seemed stuck in a rut acting in forgettable films like "Suspect," "Satisfaction," and "The Good Mother." I didn't really take measure of him as a performer until he played Patrick Swayze's vengeful, incredibly lethal hillbilly brother in "Next of Kin." His high-pitched voice and not-entirely-hidden Irish lilt is actually perfect for an Appalachian hill person, and even though the film is just a studio programmer,...

SXSW 2025 Review: Good Boy is a Rousing Success That Defies Genre Expectations
Image
You're a smart cookie, Ben Leonberg. How can I negatively review a dog-led haunted house movie? Good Boy is a layup for horror fans who adore their canine companions. Leonberg and co-writer Alex Cannon script a love letter to four-legged friends who lift our spirits, love us unconditionally and protect us from anything—including muddy basement entities. Leonberg's "Doggie Horror Movie" is leagues more than a gimmick, redefining traditional genre scopes for something applaudably innovative.

Leonberg's real-life dog, Indy, stars as himself in Good Boy. He's a loyal sidekick to Todd (Shane Jensen), a cancer patient who relocates into his grandfather's eerie woodland home (Larry Fessenden lends a veteran presence as pop-pop in old videos). Todd's sister Vera (Arielle Friedman) questions the choice, recalling an unshakable discomfort about the isolated spot. Her brother shrugs off the warning, but Indy immediately senses danger. Indy barks and claws and tries to warn Todd,...

Who Should Direct the Next James Bond Movie?
Image
It has only been a few weeks since Amazon announced it had acquired full creative control of the James Bond franchise, but the rumor mill has been running nonstop ever since. The internet has been alight with speculation about which actor will take over for Daniel Craig as 007. While Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is fielding suggestions for the next Bond, though, the franchise’s future star is not the only role that needs to be filled for it to officially move forward.

Amazon also has to choose a director to helm its next Bond movie. The franchise’s previous directors include Sam Mendes, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Martin Campbell, Terence Young and Lewis Gilbert. Here are five filmmakers who could potentially join that list, and sooner rather than later.

Do Directors Get a Best Picture Bump at the Box Office for Their Next Movie? Yes and No
Image
Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.

Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.

The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.

But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

It’s President Viola Davis vs. Homelander in the new trailer for the Prime Video action film G20
Image
From time to time, sometimes the President gets in on the action themselves as they take matters into their own hands with movies like Independence Day, White House Down and, of course, Air Force One. Additionally, the movie Widows showed that Viola Davis was capable of crossing over into the action genre. Now, the Academy Award-winning actress goes full-on Harrison Ford as a President who takes on a group of terrorists in the new trailer for G20. Prime Video has released the new trailer where Davis goes up against The Boys‘ Antony Starr.

The official plot synopsis reads,

“When the G20 summit comes under siege, U.S. President Danielle Sutton (Academy Award winner Viola Davis) becomes the number one target. After evading capture by the attackers, she must outsmart the enemy to protect her family, defend her country and safeguard world leaders in this action-packed thrill ride.”

15 Worst Liam Neeson Movies, Ranked
Image
It should be noted, first and foremost, that Liam Neeson has been in plenty of great movies and is a more versatile actor than some give him credit for. He’s become a surprisingly strong action star in the wake of Taken, but has also proven capable of so much more, as demonstrated by his roles in great films like Silence, Schindler’s List, Widows, and Batman Begins, to name just a few.

‘A Complete Unknown’ Director James Mangold Says There’s Hostility to Movies That ‘Wear Their Heart on Their Sleeve’: We ‘Shouldn’t Be Embarrassed to Feel S—’
Image
James Mangold misses the era when movies weren’t embarrassed to make audiences feel something. The director of the Bob Dylan musical biopic “A Complete Unknown” and comic book adaptation “Logan” believes there’s a growing hostility to films that wear “their hearts on their sleeve.”

“Most of my generation, my peers, have been generally fascinated by irony or detachment. I never felt completely at home in that idiom because I felt those [films] were cool and clever, but not necessarily moving,” the newly minted Oscar nominee said at Sundance’s annual gala on Friday night, where he was feted with the second-ever Trailblazer Award (the first was bestowed to Christoper Nolan in 2024). “Movies that put their feelings on the line, the way we talk about them and use words like melodramatic or chewing the scenery or too much, we kill some of the fearlessness [of directors].”

Glenn Close, James Mangold, and Marielle Heller Are ‘Totally in Awe’ of Sundance’s Michelle Satter
Image
The star of Sundance’s annual gala in 2025 was not newly-minted Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, or Oscar winner Olivia Colman, or even Sara Bareilles, who earned a standing ovation for a brief performance to close out the evening. Instead it was Michelle Satter, whose name the general public may not know but was beloved in the room at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Park City.

Satter is the Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs for the Sundance Institute. She has been with the non-profit since quite literally the very beginning. In her speech at the honorees dinner, Satter recalled getting five minutes of Robert Redford’s time and working up the courage to tell him that he needed her to open a Los Angeles office for the Sundance Institute.

His response? “Sure. Call me when you get there.” The rest is history.

Satter launched the Filmmakers Lab for the...

Breaking Baz: Meet ‘Wicked’s’ Wonderful Wizard Of Sound Who Captured The Voices Of Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande For Movie Musical
Image
Exclusive: Wicked production sound mixer Simon Hayes says Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba opposite Ariana Grande’s Glinda in the musical extravaganza, has the prowess of an Olympian, which enabled his team to achieve vastly more than they’d expected.

When Hayes and his unit were setting up microphones for the dynamic tour de force number “Defying Gravity” that sees Erivo soar away on a broomstick, they figured that the star would have to stop to catch her breath while doing somersaults for Universal’s hit picture.

Erivo had three microphones on her: a personal mic on the center of her forehead, another fixed on the brim of her hat and one placed on her costume.

“What we didn’t realize was that Cynthia would be able to do these gymnastic movements and still sing perfectly. It didn’t faze her in any way,” he marvels.

Liam Neeson Thriller With 83% Rt Score Finds Success On New Streaming Service 1 Year Later
Image
Liam Neeson has had quite an interesting career over the last few decades. Early in his career, he became an Oscar-nominated actor, recognized for his work in the leading role in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List. He has also received Golden Globe nominations for Michael Collins and Kinsey. As such, many of his works have been critically acclaimed, including Everest, Widows, Husbands and Wives, Ponyo, and Batman Begins. Thus, Neeson is a well-respected and acclaimed actor of his generation.

However, Neeson's career has also been saturated with action movies that are poorly reviewed, including Blacklight, Taken 3, and Men in Black: International. In addition, many of his films have disappointed at the box office. Despite receiving positive reviews, the pre-covid Ordinary Love made less than $1 million at the worldwide box office. His recent 2024 film Absolution also struggled at the box office, getting just $3.4 million. However, another 2024 movie starring Neeson is...

Cynthia Erivo's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Cynthia Erivo movies and TV shows feature a strong mix of releases that take advantage of her singing and acting talents. Erivo got her start as a singer and she worked in theater before she ever took on roles in movies and TV shows. It was her early role as Celie Harris in The Color Purple that earned her first major attention, and it even led to her Broadway debut when she took the role to the revival in 2015.

This led to her film debut in 2016 when she signed on for the neo-noir thriller Bad Times at the El Royale as part of that film’s ensemble cast. This led to even bigger things, such as the Steve McQueen-directed film Widows, and then enjoyed her breakout in the historical drama Harriet, where she played abolitionist Harriet Tubman. However, she enjoyed her biggest breakthrough when she signed on...

Cynthia Erivo Casts a Spell: How Her Elphaba Changed ‘Wicked’ for Good
Image
At the age of 37, Cynthia Erivo has already had a richly varied career, winning a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy and channeling Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” and Aretha Franklin in “Genius: Aretha.”

So why does it seem as if she might have been born to play the iconic Wicked Witch of the West in “Wicked,” Jon M. Chu’s musical movie adaptation of author Gregory Maguire’s 1995 “Wizard of Oz” prequel novel and its 2003 Broadway musical?

As Elphaba, the name the witch had before she became known simply as wicked, Erivo uses the film to take a dramatic turn that has landed her both at the top of the box-office charts and in the awards picture. Beyond her renditions of Stephen Schwartz’s beloved “Defying Gravity,” “The Wizard and I,” “I’m Not That Girl” and other numbers, she illuminates a richly textured emotional landscape within the west-bound witch everyone thinks they know.

Liam Neeson's Highest-Rated Movie On Rotten Tomatoes Isn't An Action Thriller
Image
Once upon a time, in the years before 2009 when "Taken" somehow took cinemas by storm, Liam Neeson used to act in all different kinds of movies. Before "Taken" and its many sequels, Neeson starred in movies ranging from the ultra-saccharine Christmas romantic comedy "Love Actually" to genre fare like "The Haunting" remake and "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace." He played Jean Valjean in the 1998 adaptation of "Les Misérables" and brought numerous historical figures to life, including Irish Republican Army founder Michael Collins, 18th-century Scottish highlander Rob Roy, and German industrialist and humanitarian Oskar Schindler.

Unfortunately, since "Taken," Neeson pretty much only stars in action thrillers, like his absolutely abysmal 2022 movie "Blacklight," which is currently the prolific actor's lowest Rotten Tomatoes score. He starred in plenty of great films before that, however, including one of director Steven Spielberg's best movies: the multiple Academy Award-winning "Schindler's List." It should...

This Is Not a Real Tube Station: Inside the Harrowing ‘Blitz’ Flooding Scene
Image
In “Blitz,” Steve McQueen’s powerful reconstruction of Germany’s World War II blitzkrieg attack on Britain, the most harrowing scene takes place underground. As London is attacked by Nazi planes, a bomb strikes a water main, which floods a subterranean subway station, trapping hundreds inside.

The scene is based on a real-life incident that occurred in 1940, drowning dozens of citizens who were sheltering in the train tunnels. The “tube set” for “Blitz” was engineered to simulate a catastrophic flood in the train tunnel, and it required the utmost caution: As the 9-year-old actor Elliott Heffernan walked around the vast subway station set, he was often shadowed by an important group of extras who had more than acting on their minds.

“They were all safety divers and stunt people, in full costume, to ensure that the entire thing was done incredibly safely,” said Oscar-winning production designer Adam Stockhausen. “We were re-creating a real event,...

Wicked is absolutely dominating the box office, smashing records left and right alongside its double feature partner, Gladiator II. Some fans are surprised at the movie's success, typically citing the film's pair of lead actresses as their initial reason for doubting it. Many fans were skeptical of Ariana Grande playing Glinda due to her relative lack of feature film acting experience, but even more audience members were skeptical of Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba. Both sets of fans, however, were simply not paying attention. Cynthia Erivo, in particular, had long cemented herself as one of Hollywood's up-and-coming stars prior to Wicked's release. Judas & The Black Messiah Cast & Real-Life Character Guide

The Judas and the Black Messiah cast brings the story of a man who infiltrated the Black Panthers to life with several recognizable stars. Directed by Shaka King, Judas and the Black Messiah primarily centers on the events that preceded the 1969 assassination of Fred Hampton, a 21-year-old Black Panther leader who served as Chairman for the Illinois chapter, beginning with criminal William O'Neal infiltrating the group as an FBI informant. It is a true-crime story with an incredible ensemble, most of whom play real-life characters.

Judas and the Black Messiah's main cast is led by Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton and Lakeith Stanfield as O'Neil. Kaluyua ended up winning an Oscar for his performance in the movie, while Stanfield was nominated alongside him. However, the film is filled with so many other notable actors playing both the allies and enemies of Fred Hampton. These performances bring the riveting and powerful...

‘Blitz’ Collaborators Steve McQueen and Adam Stockhausen Are a Match Made in Cinematic Heaven — And It Started with an Unexpected Prop
Image
On December 5, the IndieWire Honors Winter 2024 ceremony will celebrate the creators and stars responsible for crafting some of the year’s best films. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, IndieWire Honors is a celebration of the filmmakers, artisans, and performers behind films well worth toasting. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.

“I know where I saw first Adam’s work.”

Steve McQueen is smiling mischievously as he looks at Adam Stockhausen and I over Zoom. Adam shakes his head. He knows what McQueen’s about to say and offers up a begrudging, if not slightly amused, “Here we go.”

“Where I first saw his work and I thought, ‘This is really good…,'” McQueen couldn’t remember the name of the film, so Stockhausen, loyal collaborator that he is, helped out.

“It’s called ‘The Switch,'” Stockhausen said,...

Best Gangster Movies With Female Leads
Image
Stories with male characters have mainly populated the gangster subgenre of crime films. Some iconic examples include The Godfather, Goodfellas, and The Untouchables. Directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have dominated this subgenre with their well-crafted films about male gangsters facing various challenges and setbacks. When looking past the most famous in the gangster subgenre, there are a few examples where females are in the spotlight.

Actresses like Sharon Stone and Michelle Pfeiffer have helped pave the way for more actresses to take center stage in gangster movies. Though they don't play the main character, the two actresses were crucial to films like Scarface and Casino. Whether it is an ensemble piece or a character study, these films, including Widows and Jackie Brown, have shown that women can contribute to the gangster subgenre just as much as men.

‘Wicked – Part One’: All The Box Office Records Broken
Image
Updated Nov. 30: Broadway musicals adapted to the screen are an erratic genre at the box office, despite Miramax’s multi-Oscar winning Chicago reviving the long-dormant Hollywood genre back in 2002 with $306.8M WW. Yet for every Les Miserables ($442.7M) hit from Universal, there were massive misfires like Dear Evan Hansen and Cats. This weekend, Universal defied the odds with their feature take of the $5 billion-grossing Broadway stage show Wicked, opening to $112.5M domestic, $162.5M worldwide as of Monday morning.

Here’s all the records that Wicked broke in its opening weekend:

The Highest Grossing Movie Ever Based on a Broadway Musical at the Domestic Box Office with $214M and counting as of Nov. 30.

Biggest Global and Domestic Opening for a Movie Based on a Broadway Show, beating the worldwide opening of 2012’s Les Miserables ($103M) and the domestic opening of Disney’s 2014 Into the Woods ($31M).

Steve McQueen Put a Modern Spin on the Heist Film With This Underrated Crime Thriller
Image
When people remark, "They don't make them like they used to," they usually refer to a movie like Widows, which came and went upon release. Despite our clamoring for more adult, star-driven genre movies, Steve McQueen's long-awaited follow-up to 12 Years a Slave left a marginal dent at the box office in November 2018. If we received sturdy heist movies half as good as Widows on a regular basis, audiences would be thrilled, as the film features some of the finest thriller set pieces in recent memory. McQueen has always been a gifted visual and dramatic storyteller, and in the heist formula, which he revamps with a modern spin and topical social commentary, he proved himself as a master behind the camera.

10 Marvel Movies That Killed The Hero At The End
Image
The heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other Marvel movies sometimes don't survive the events of their own movies. The long history of Marvel movies predates the MCUs movie timeline, with many characters from the comics adapted to the big screen over the years. With so many different storylines to adapt and different movie continuities, there have been many occasions on which heroes die as a result of their heroic duty.

Throughout the movies of the MCU, the ongoing potential of a shared universe has seen death become less frequent and often impermanent. However, that isnt to say that no MCU heroes die, as some meet their end during the climax of a movie only to return in a sequel. In fact, many heroes have been killed on the big screen across multiple franchises, and here are 10 examples of times that Marvel movies killed off the hero at the end.

All Feature Films of Steve McQueen (including Blitz) Ranked
Steve McQueen
Ever since his short films and debut feature film, Steve McQueen has always had an artistic bent while expressing intense and hard-hitting stories about politics, race, sociological development, and even psychological exploration (for the most part). The best of McQueen’s films are always characterized by a hard, unflinching, uncompromising, almost detached stance and being brutally but gorgeously imparted through a mix of form and substance, with both firmly under his control. It produces a filmmaker whose filmography is diverse and fascinating, quality notwithstanding. The singular voice of the filmmaker always manages to stand out.

Two caveats are being taken while ranking this list –

While McQueen is hugely prolific as a filmmaker, ranging from features, shorts, documentaries, and even ad films, this list will only cover the ten films McQueen has directed. All the entries in the Small Axe anthology are considered individual films, rather than taking the anthology as a single entry.

Blitz Review: Steve McQueen’s WWII epic is his most accessible
Image
Plot: During the WW2 bombing of Britain, a young mother (Saoirse Ronan) sends her young son, Georgie (Elliott Heffernan), off to the countryside for his own safety. Angry at being separated from his mother and used to being taunted for his mixed-race heritage, he jumps off the train to the countryside and embarks on an odyssey through a bombed-out London to reunite with his family.

Review: Blitz wasn’t what I expected from director Steve McQueen. One of the most potent directors in the business, Hunger, Shame, 12 Years a Slave, Widows and Small Axe were all dazzlingly well-directed, but there was nothing in any of them which made me think McQueen had a family film in him. Blitz, which carries a PG-13 rating, is his most accessible film to date, with it a soft-hearted journey through London which sometimes feels almost Spielbergian. While it’s not as good as...

Wicked Cast & Character Guide: Who Plays Who?
Image
After years of delays and anticipation, the first half of Jon M. Chu's sprawling, two-part movie adaptation of "Wicked" — the massively popular Broadway musical based on Gregory Maguire's retelling of "The Wizard of Oz" — is finally hitting theaters, and Chu has assembled an all-star cast to bring Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's Broadway hit to the big screen. "Wicked" flips the script on L. Frank Baum's original story about Dorothy (Judy Garland in the classic 1939 "Wizard of Oz" film) exploring the magical land of Oz by focusing on Elphaba, a young girl born with green skin who struggles to fit in at the prestigious Shiz University and ultimately becomes the legendary pop culture villain The Wicked Witch of the West (memorably portrayed by Margaret Hamilton in the '39 movie).

So, who's in Chu's "Wicked" movie, decades after Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth originated the lead roles of Elphaba and Galinda on stage?...

Steve McQueen Is ‘Going to Do It My Way’: The Director on ‘Blitz,’ Hans Zimmer, and Apple’s Theatrical Window
Image
British artist-turned-filmmaker Steve McQueen is tired of being defined by other people. Since he broke out with 2008’s Irish prison drama “Hunger” — along with Michael Fassbender — each film has been completely different from the last. “Shame” (2011) was a provocative portrait of a sex addict (Fassbender), while Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave” (2013) turned Lupita Nyong’o into an Oscar-winning star and grossed $187.7 million worldwide. “Widows” (2018) was a less successful foray into an American genre picture. And back in Britain, his 2020 “Small Axe” limited TV series and 2023 documentary “Occupied City” earned raves.

“I don’t even try to be in my own box,” he told IndieWire during a Los Angeles interview. “My mother always told me, ‘Never let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.’ Someone blow the dust off of cinema because I don’t want to be stuffy. I want it to be entertaining in a...
