The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
Prismark1012 March 2016
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a railway in the south of India, Tamil Nadu. Built by the British in 1908 the railway still relies on steam locomotives for most of the journey.

In 2005 Nilgiri Mountain Railway became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Mountain Railways of India. The uphill journey takes around 290 minutes, it supposedly has the steepest track in Asia. It chugs through the south Indian jungle up to a hill station, once known as Snooty Ooty.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a romantic line, popular with honeymooners and devotees of steam trains. This second programme takes a romance theme to the workers on this line. Train guard Ivan is an Anglo-Indian and devout Christian whose is due to become a grandfather. His friend Jenni, the ticket inspector lives a bachelor lifestyle but is looking to get married and has found someone.

In the engine workshop, Shivani, is the only female diesel engineer is working on a steam locomotive but she is working far from home and misses her husband and young child who she only gets to see every fortnight which causes everyone in the family distress.

I did feel underwhelmed by this one, I actually felt that concentrating on the people too much felt like padding as it was less about the train. Maybe it was not easy to bring the story about the train journey itself to the screen.
