Mubi has unveiled next month’s streaming lineup, including an exciting lineup of notable new releases: Bertrand Bonello’s Coma (along with Nocturama), Julia Loktev’s The Loneliest Planet (as her newest film premieres at the New York Film Festival), Martin Rejtman’s The Practice alongside his previous features, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, and more.
As David Katz said in his review from 2022’s Berlinale, “Coma is anything but a navel-gazing work, and more one of imaginative empathy. It is not Being Bertrand Bonello, but addressed to and concerning a person of a far-removed generation and gender: his teenage daughter Anna. Some amusing early interactions with pop culture, especially music, come from this cross-generational conversation: ‘turn that garbage off’ et al. But Bonello looks at the Zoomer state of mind, as he does for much else of importance, and has cutting, perceptive and troubling things to say.”

Horror movies are rarely critical darlings. Despite this, The Babadook became one of the most beloved movies of the 2010s. The director of The Babadook was once convinced the movie was a failure. Now, she has a different perspective.
The director of ‘The Babadook’ took 1 comment as gospel
Jennifer Kent is a movie director known first and foremost for The Babadook. During a 2024 interview with Variety, she discussed the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. While many filmmakers would be thrilled to attend Sundance, it was a nerve-wracking experience for Kent.
“It [was] a hyper-aware moment for me, ‘Why is that woman coughing? Why is there so much silence?'” Kent recalled. “Like, what do I want them to talk through the film? Then when the film ended, the woman in front of me said, ‘Well, that was crap.’ I remember completely shutting down and thinking, ‘Oh, I’ve made a big turkey.

Jennifer Kent has revealed a sequel to ‘The Babadook’ is unlikely. The beloved horror movie - which stars Essie Davis, Daniel Henshall and Hayley McElhinney - is celebrating its 10th anniversary but its 55-year-old director has admitted there probably won’t be a follow-up flick because she is "too involved" with other projects. When Screen Rant asked Kent if a sequel was on the table, she said: "No, I think I'm too involved in other films that I'm trying to get made. "I mean, if there suddenly became some desperate urge to tell a story related to that, I would probably say, ‘Okay, all bets are off. I'm going to go and make the sequel.’ But I just can’t see that happening. I feel that the idea has really been explored."‘The Nightingale’ director then teased she was currently working on some horror projects for both the big and small screen.

Jennifer Kent got quite a scare when “The Babadook” premiered at Sundance in 2014.
The writer/director made her feature debut with the horror film, which IndieWire recently ranked as the ninth best horror movie of the 21st century. However, first reactions to the feature were mixed at first, at least according to Kent.
The filmmaker told Variety as part of the film’s 10-year anniversary that the Sundance debut led her to worry that she “made a big turkey” of a movie after one audience member deemed it “crap.”
“It [was] a hyper-aware moment for me, ‘Why is that woman coughing? Stars: James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough | Written and Directed by James Watkins
Directed by James Watkins and produced by Blumhouse, Speak No Evil is an American remake of the 2002 Danish thriller of the same name (also known as Gaesterne). Exceptionally bleak and utterly devastating, the original film is one of the most chilling horror films of the last decade, and while the English language version doesn’t quite have the same impact, it’s still a deliciously nasty thriller with a stand-out performance from James McAvoy.
The film begins in Italy, where American couple Ben and Louise are on holiday with their anxious 11 year-old daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler). They’re soon befriended by British couple Paddy and Ciara (James McAvoy and The Nightingale‘s Aisling Franciosi), whose mute young son Alfie (Dan Hough) is the same age as Agnes.

Lucas Bravo is bringing one of France’s most iconic criminals to life in Mélanie Laurent’s “Freedom.”
The Amazon Prime Video feature is inspired by true story of Bruno Sulak, who infamously masterminded jewelry-store heists — sans guns — in the 1970s and early 1980s. Bravo portrays Sulak in the biopic.
Here’s more, straight from the film’s official synopsis: “Known for his charm and finesse, Sulak masterminded daring heists without firing a single shot. But as his infamy grew, so did the relentless pursuit of George Moréas (Yvan Attal), a tenacious police commissioner with a knack for outsmarting criminals. As Moréas closes in, Sulak’s escapes from prison become legendary, fueled by a lust for freedom, and a burning desire for his lover Annie (Léa Luce Busato). Amidst the chaos of their criminal spree, Sulak and Annie become the ultimate symbols of defiance in the most exhilarating game of...

Countless cinephile essays have been written about remakes. From their necessity to the “rules” they should or should not follow, not to mention the “nostalgia” component in many cases, it’s a complex subject matter in the world of cinema appreciation. While some viewers prefer remakes completely different from the original, others want something nearly identical. Nevertheless, there’s something incredibly uncommon about Speak No Evil – the fact that the original flick was released just two years ago. Is such a short time enough for an American remake of the Danish movie?
The premise remains similar, only swapping the characters’ origins and nationalities. In this remake, an American family meets a British family during a vacation in Italy, leading to an invitation for the former to visit the latter’s countryside home, far from central London. What was meant to be an idyllic weekend slowly unravels as the Americans try...

What made Christian Tafdrup’s Danish nihilistic horror film “Speak No Evil” — an even more hopeless take on “Funny Games” and its vivisection of bourgeois manners and cruel whetting of audience appetite for carnage — so shocking was what wasn’t spoken. Namely, the Nordic social code that says you should never enter a stranger’s home especially when anxiously invited, and that the invitation alone should be a flashing red light to avoid mingling your family vacation with another’s. As American studios are almost perversely compelled to do, here “Speak No Evil” gets a safe, devoid-of-scares remake directed by James Watkins, hailing from the Blumhouse factory of mainstream scares. Watkins is an appropriate match for a remake, if it had to happen at all, given his pedigree as the director of the chilling “Eden Lake,” about a romantic weekend terrorized by delinquents without a clear motive.
But this version of “Speak No Evil,...

Stephen King might not typically be the person folks look to for Western movie recommendations, but the horror legend took to Twitter/X recently to recommend an overlooked Western starring the always-great Kurt Russell. King has written some stories that are Western-adjacent, especially his "The Dark Tower" series, but generally his work is in a very different genre. The movie he recommended, however, totally makes sense, because it's probably the most horrific Western ever made.
The Western King recommended was "Bone Tomahawk," S. Craig Zahler's 2015 film that stars Patrick Wilson as Arthur O'Dwyer, whose wife Samantha (Lili Simmons) has been kidnapped by the terrifying "Troglodytes," a group of cannibalistic cave people. Russell plays Sheriff Franklin Hunt, who gets drawn into helping O'Dwyer with a ragtag group of townsfolk, including bloodthirsty lawman John Brooder (Matthew Fox) and the town's doctor, Deputy Chicory (Richard Jenkins). Legendary actress Shelley Duvall has sadly passed away at the age of 75. Movie fans know her best for her stellar work as Wendy Torrance in The Shining, and for playing Olive Oyl in the big-screen version of Popeye — although her work in the Harland Williams vehicle RocketMan has yet to be fully-appreciated.
Anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s likely also remembers Duvall as the host and creator of Faerie Tale Theatre, one of the most bizarre, charming and idiosyncratic children’s shows in the history of TV. Each episode presented an hour-long, live-action adaptation of a familiar (or occasionally not-so-familiar) fairy tale, featuring a double-take-inducing cast of Hollywood legends and upstart comic stars.
Where else could you find Elliott Gould playing a giant in Jack and the Beanstalk, or Joan Collins as a witch trying to capture Hansel and Gretel? Or Howie Mandel as a character named...

One of the most popular genres is definitely the Western. It's funny that westerns were popular in the 50's and 60's and then came back with a new wave of fame so many years later. One of the most popular shows of the genre is Yellowstone, but apparently there are many movies that give a more realistic portrayal of everything terrible that usually happens in a given reality.
And although the movie is far shorter than a series, we guarantee you that these 5 movies will give you much more than any show could.
1. Django Unchained (2012)
Quentin Tarantino's iconic film is definitely worthy of being number 1 on the list. Created in 2012, it tells the story of a slave named Django who is freed by a bounty hunter named King Schultz for his own purposes. Django helped Schultz and then wanted to find out where his wife was sold to. And they start their adventure.

Stopmotion is a horror movie directed by Robert Morgan starring Aisling Franciosi.
“Stopmotion” is a classic horror movie built around a tired yet classic theme: madness. Visually, it’s solid, packed with innovative ideas, and skillfully blends the visual component with the engaging plot that progressively picks up pace.
While it’s not groundbreaking or going to keep you up at night with terror, it is an enjoyable watch with a psychedelic touch, reminiscent of David Lynch’s style.
Plot
A young girl lives with her mother, both of them working on an animation film. When the mother suddenly suffers a debilitating shock, the girl starts to film her own animation movie with a strange girl who writes a chilling script about an “ash man.”

Aisling Franciosi has done drama and horror, and now, the breakout Irish-Italian star is trying her hand at not one, but two comedies. What else can this indie actress do?
Well, aside from mastering the “addictive” hobby of stop-motion animation for the aptly-titled horror film “Stopmotion,” Franciosi is eyeing a producing debut in the indie film space. It’s all dependent on connecting with the perfect project, something that Franciosi previously found with A24’s “God’s Creatures” which landed her a BIFA nomination alongside co-star Paul Mescal, and Jennifer Kent’s Venice award-winning “The Nightingale,” for which Franciosi was nominated in the Breakthrough Actor category at the Gotham Awards.
“Thankfully, I’ve got an agent who knows me well, and she sent me the script for [‘Stopmotion’] saying, ‘This is absolutely bonkers, but I think you’ll love it.’ And I did as soon as I read it,” Franciosi told...

Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale, Last Voyage of the Demeter) stars as a stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons in Stopmotion, the feature debut by director Robert Morgan releasing in theaters this week. The film releases in theaters on February 23 before heading to Shudder on May 31, 2024.
Stopmotion director Robert Morgan, who co-wrote the script with Robin King, is best known for the stop-motion shorts “Bobby Yeah” and “D is for Deloused” in ABCs of Death 2. Horror often presents a literal interpretation of artists giving themselves over to their art, whether through supernatural suffering or psychological unraveling. Stopmotion, the feature directorial debut by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker/animator Robert Morgan, chooses the latter. While it may adhere to a familiar path of an artist’s unraveling, Morgan finds inventive and creative ways to mine visceral horror through the uncanny, unsettling nature of stop-motion animation and its painstaking process.

In Robert Morgan’s feature-length debut, Stopmotion, animator Ella Blake (Aisling Fransciosi) vows to finish the work of her ailing mother, Suzanne (Stella Gonet). She shuts herself away from the world in an old apartment building, in total dedication to the painstaking process of moving sculpted figures a centimeter at a time. But she soon begins a new work altogether at the behest of a spooky little neighbor girl, only for the unsettling art they create and Ella’s perception of reality to bleed together. Pity, though, that they don’t bleed together enough, as the macabre dream logic that many of Stopmotion’s sequences employ is too often undermined by plot rhythms familiar from so many horror films about trauma.

It’s been two years since the release of the live action Mortal Kombat reboot, and a sequel is on the way soon. Filming on Mortal Kombat 2 actually kicked off earlier this summer, you may recall, but it didn’t last long due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on at the time. But have no fear, because production on the movie sequel gets back underway real soon.
Responding to a report this week that suggested Mortal Kombat 2 will begin filming in early 2024, producer Todd Garner notes on Twitter that it’s actually kicking off even sooner.
“This is not true. We are filming before then,” Garner teases.
He writes in a follow-up tweet, “I promise I will keep the Mk Kommunity posted as soon as I have info on start date, etc. Everyone else is just speculating… or posting for clicks.”

Catalonia’s annual celebration of strange screen tales included a murderous birthmark, weretigers and a therapist overcome with ancient evil
At this year’s International Fantastic film festival of Catalonia, I got bitten all over. Not by vampires or werewolves, alas, but by mosquitoes, which took advantage of the unseasonably hot temperatures on Spain’s Costa del Garraf to transform my body into a throbbing, misshapen mass, rather like William Hurt in Altered States. Still, this helped me feel a kinship with the protagonists of this year’s exercises in body horror, many of them bearing the imprint of Shudder, a streaming service available in the UK, Ireland and Germany but not elsewhere in Europe. But it was one of their titles – Argentinian director Demián Rugna’s When Evil Lurks – that became the first Latin American movie in the festival’s 56-year history to win the Sitges award for best feature film.
