Robert Eggers had been working on making Nosferatu for many years until the film officially premiered in late 2024. As that paid off, he detailed his inspiration for the gothic horror.
Nosferatu was a longtime passion project for Eggers, who had been a fan of the 1922 silent German film since he was a child. He wanted to make the movie right after his directorial debut, 2015's The Witch, but decided to wait. Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Eggers revealed the surprising Tim Burton inspiration he had for Nosferatu.

To mark the digital release of the acclaimed period horror film Fright on Prime, writer and director Warren Dudley reflects on the challenges/joys of indie filmmaking, his passion for football and what frightens him.
Your latest film, Fright, recently enjoyed a successful World premiere at FrightFest 2024, where it was compared to The Haunting and The Innocents. Describe what the occasion was like.
The entire Frightfest experience was the usual festival mix of nervous excitement and terror! It was the first time the cast and crew were seeing the film too so I was really hoping they would love how it turned out – and I think they did. The paying audience added even more pressure, being made up of seasoned horror fans who, by that point, had already watched around 25 films over the weekend so that was quite stressful.
However, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive from the audience and the Frightfest critics.

A ‘market with a view’ is how Nem Dubrovnik pitches itself. In a literal sense, the view is of the Adriatic Sea, but in a business sense, the ambition is to create a relaxed setting for execs to meet and do deals, a marked switch-up from the hubbub of many TV markets.
Launching in 2013, Nem Dubrovnik has carved out its calendar moment in June. Over a decade, it has established itself as a key buying and selling confab for the Cee region and beyond, with all of the notable buyers in attendance. The market organizers will grow the space for distributors by 40% this year.
Amazon MGM, Disney, Idtv and Lionsgate will have screenings or showcases. Beta Film, Newen Studios, Rai, and Warner Bros. Discovery are among the big European and international players that will be selling programming at Nem.
The Cee region remains a huge buyer of telenovelas and Turkish drama.

Father Time comes for us all in different degrees. Now one sees countless ads for wrinkle creams, hair colouring, replacements or surgeries linked to boosting confidence. The most offensive is getting children as young as twelve to use skin rejuvenation products. Anubys Lopez’s film Aged (2023) takes a huge page of countless films where glands are harvested and injected more strongly. The film uses motifs of Countess Dracula (1971) and Cocoon (1985) to bring terror to the onset of gray hairs and fading memories. More importantly, it is what family members would do to make sure the clock is forcibly turned back.
Aged (2023) is oddly constructed and misdirected in places with some poor direction missing key plot moments. Bright scenes of rural landscapes and a meeting in an antiseptic stilted coffee shop with Charles Bloom (Dave McClain), meeting with Veronica Grey (Morgan Boss-Maltais) to interview as a caregiver for his ailing mother.

Horror has always been a genre used to discuss social issues or the often silenced struggles of everyday life. The best pieces of this medium can portray guttural, realistic fears; many creators use this terror to tell resonant stories that many viewers may be shocked to find they relate to. The 1961 horror classic, The Innocents, directed by Jack Clayton, is a horror-drama that does this, using its tale of a young governess faced with two oddly malicious children to broadcast a subversive image of children and the impact adults can have on them. It's a moving tale featuring sublime acting and topics that its audience had never before encountered onscreen. Yet its allegory for youth, and the terrors that come with it, refuses to really push social norms by focusing on children fully autonomous in their decisions. It has a great beginning to telling an essential message, but it falters...

Black and white horror films rely on light and shadow to create chilling atmospheres, captivating viewers in timeless terrors. Films like Psycho and Carnival of Souls excel in psychological horror, immersing audiences in subtle, plausible frights. The Innocents, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Night of the Living Dead set standards for eerie, unsettling storytelling in monochrome.
Black and white horror films have a unique ability to amplify the sinister imagery and tones, rendering them among the scariest in film history. Devoid of color, monochrome horror movies rely solely on nuanced plays of light and shadow along with striking compositions to generate nail-biting frights. This atmospheric visual simplicity channels viewers’ attention towards the emotional experience rather than superficial distractions. Regardless of era, black and white cinematography lends an air of timeless immediacy and believability to onscreen terrors.

It’s the battle of the TV Cromwells! On BBC One later this year, Mark Rylance returns in the role of Henry VIII’s right hand man in series two of Wolf Hall, adapted from Dame Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed novels. But before then, Sean Bean will play Thomas Cromwell in Disney+ British historical crime mystery Shardlake.
(Incidentally, if Bean wanted to dispel his reputation for playing characters who meet sticky, early ends, then his agent may want to get their head in a history book before forwarding the next script…)
Thomas Cromwell is a supporting role in Shardlake, a new four-part series adapted from the first in C.J Sansom’s successful mystery novels about Matthew Shardlake, a 16th century lawyer born with what would now be understood as scoliosis, and who investigates murder mysteries for the Crown.

Born in 1924 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Capote started writing at the age of 8, and by the time he turned 24, he had established himself as an up-and-coming writer and received the O. A beautiful young Black woman sits alone at a bar, waiting for her date to show. When he does, he orders for her, brays about his job in finance, objectifies her “caramel” skin, and later, tries to secretly film her – and worse.
On a different night out, a man tells the woman that she could be a model – not runway, but print – and that while he doesn’t usually go for Black girls, she’s the prettiest one there. She witnesses another man, whose mates are bellowing about taking girls “to pound town”, taking upskirt photos in a club. She makes a beeline for them all, and not because her dickhead radar is faulty but because it’s fully operational and when she gets these men into a dark corner… well, that would be telling.

Please don’t stop the music: Anne Fontaine isn’t done with it just yet.
Following “Boléro” — world premiering at International Film Festival Rotterdam — the noted director is developing another melodic project.
“It’s about a character who was a star at 10 years old. He had a ‘magic’ voice, but then he suddenly lost it. Years later, he is ready to come back. It’s a comedy, based on something real,” she says. Admitting that this time, she will swap classical compositions for popular tunes.
“I like songs: they are in our blood. We hear them and remember we lost a lover when they were playing. They mark our lives. There will be so much music [in this film]. And all these amazing voices, including a real-life singer making her film debut.”
New project will combine “cruelty and humor.”
“Our destiny might be cruel, but we are still able to laugh about it.

Early in Handling the Undead, an adolescent girl, Flora (Inesa Dauksta), plays a video game where shooting zombies is your ticket to staying alive. Rendered in crude 3D, these shambling, emaciated, flesh-hungry zombies are the familiar sort that have haunted the pop-cultural imagination, and this depiction stands in seeming contrast to the people who came back from the dead after a mysterious event in Thea Hvistendahl’s film. They don’t do much of anything except breath and stare from behind glassy eyes at a world we’re never really sure if they can comprehend. But while they’re shells of who they once were, silent and often immobile, they recall enough of where they came from to reach out to the people who grieve them.

Perhaps the best way to describe the Norwegian zombie movie, Handling the Undead (Handtering av Udode), is as a mournful reflection on grief, on the struggle of the bereaved to let go of their departed loved ones. Based on the book by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, whose debut novel, Let the Right One In, became one of the best vampire movies of the 21st century — yielding a solid enough American remake, a so-so Showtime series and an innovative British stage adaptation — Thea Hvistendahl’s debut feature is a slow-burn experience that demands patience.
The degree to which that patience is rewarded will depend on the viewer’s willingness to get lost in the mood of pervasive anxiety and sorrow in a movie whose elegant restraint make it more psychological study than horror. That applies even once the rotting flesh-eaters have been revealed. One selling point of the multistrand drama...

The horror TV genre has become increasingly popular and successful, paving the way for adaptations of horror movies for the small screen. The Innocents, Midsommar, The Shining, The Ring, It Follows, A Quiet Place, Cabin in the Woods, The Blair Witch Project, and Cube are all horror movies that have the potential to be adapted into compelling TV shows. TV adaptations of these movies could explore darker themes, offer more character development, and provide a deeper exploration of the storylines and lore of the original films.
With the increasing popularity of horror TV shows, many movies in the genre should be considered for a small-screen adaptation. Though it started out less abundant than its movie counterpart, the horror TV genre has been a mainstay since the 1940s. Iconic shows like The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery paved the way for modern shows like American Horror Story and Slasher. Nowadays, horror...

“Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within…and whatever walked there, walked alone.” – Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House (1959).
Of all the subgenres of horror, the haunted house story has provided the most opportunities for slow and subtle terror that creeps and crawls its way under the skin and into the psyche. The Old Dark House (1932), The Uninvited (1944), The Innocents (1961), Burnt Offerings (1976), and The Changeling (1980) stand among the best that not only the haunted house film, but all of horror have to offer. For many, the absolute pinnacle of these films is Robert Wise’s 1963 masterpiece of suggestive horror The Haunting. Based on the novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, the film owes much to the influences of the past while still carving a way toward the future, is populated by rich and relatable characters, and is a deeply felt...

In a world where horror often means a bucket of blood and a masked guy with a machete, sometimes the most bone-chilling experiences come from subtle horror. These are the kind of films that creep up on you, leaving you with a sense of unease that’s hard to shake off. They don’t rely on jump scares or grotesque visuals; instead, they master the art of understated horror, proving that sometimes less is indeed more in the realm of fear. So, if you’re tired of the same old slashers and are looking for something that gets under your skin in a more refined way, this list is for you.
This isn’t your average horror flick roundup; it’s a carefully curated list of films that specialize in the kind of subtle, understated horror that haunts you in the quiet moments. From the psychological to the supernaturally surreal,...

When cinephiles of a certain sensibility talk about the best decades for horror, they’ll probably point to the 1980s with its explosion of cutting-edge special effects and home video-induced demand for material. Or they might point to the era of Universal Pictures’ domination in the 1930s, followed up then by the moody Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s. Maybe even a very unpopular kid will try to make an argument for the 2010s, at least until everyone pulls the A24 hat over his eyes and kicks him out.
But moviegoers would be foolish to overlook the 1960s. The decade saw not only two amazing horror flicks from Alfred Hitchcock but also caught the genre in an interesting time of transition. Filmmakers built on the Gothic approach of previous decades by adding a psychological dimension, finding new chills in an established model. Furthermore, the decade saw the first steps toward the ho,...

Rebecca Hall is a profoundly gifted performer, and evidence is steadily mounting in favor of her being a force to be reckoned with within the horror genre in particular as well. Before she sought to solve the mystery surrounding the premature death of her secretive husband in the twisty, sharply original The Night House, Hall played a paranormal investigator/debunker in 1921 London who travels to a cavernous boarding school in search of a supposedly pernicious entity haunting the building's maze of corridors in 2011's The Awakening. As an early opening title suggests, 1914-1919 'is a time for ghosts', especially in Britain, given the enormous number of casualties as a result of the recently ended World War I and the influenza epidemic. The BBC production is a truly thrilling showcase for its lead, and for those whom love a classic ghost story in the tradition of The Others, The Changeling or The Innocents — look no further.

Season 4 of Netflix’s hit show “Emily in Paris” and Amazon Prime’s “Etoile” are two of the high profile U.S. productions tentatively scheduled to start shooting in January in the French capital ahead of the Olympic Games.
With the WGA strike over and SAG-AFTRA preparing to resume negotiations with studios, time is of the essence for producers who are hoping to slot their shoots before the start of the massive sports celebration this summer. From June to September, all shoots will be barred in Paris, while access to some posh areas around the Concorde and Trocadero will be restricted starting in March.
“Emily in Paris” Season 4 was initially scheduled to start shooting in the summer at the Cité du Cinema studios, where the last three seasons were filmed. But the Cité du Cinema has been booked for the Olympic Games starting in mid-November, so the series will shoot at the nearby Studios Monjoie.

Kenneth Branagh looks all set to continue his love affair with the world of Agatha Christie this year, with the pending release of A Haunting in Venice, Branagh's third adaptation of Christie's Hercule Poirot detective novels. Christie's most famous crime-solving creation has been played on TV and in film by a host of world-famous actors over the years, including stars of House Hugh Laurie, Alfred Molina, and Albert Finney, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the 1974 version of Murder on the Orient Express.
However, the most successful portrayal was that of David Suchet, who first took on the role for the British TV channel ITV in 1989 and proved so successful with audiences that he went on to play the part for the next quarter-century, retiring only in 2013 after filming 13 series and 70 episodes based on Christie's works, alongside such luminaries of stage and screen as two-time...

If there’s a prime example of a franchise getting better with every movie, Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie universe is a prime example. Starting in 2017 with the generic “Murder on the Orient Express,” it’s sequel, the 2022 feature “Death on the Nile” was rollicking fun if only for how horny it was in its themes and presentation. But, surprisingly, Branagh followed that up with a dark and somber haunted house story, “A Haunting in Venice” that, if anything, showcases both his impassioned love for Christie’s work and ability to tell a truly spooky film.
Acclaimed detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) is in a bit of a slump. It’s 1947 and Poirot spends his days avoiding mysteries and eating cake. But things change when his old friend Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey) comes calling, asking Poirot to witness a seance led by psychic medium Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh). Reynolds hopes to...

The fourth season of “Emily in Paris” was initially set to start in late summer or early fall in the French capital that gives the show its name, but filming has been delayed by two months due to the writers strike, Variety has learned. That could stretch longer if WGA members remain on the picket line.
Netflix declined to comment. The plan is still to start shooting by the end of fall, according to a source close to the streamer.
Netflix announced the renewal of Darren Star’s Emmy-nominated romantic comedy in January 2022. Season 3 dropped on the streamer on Dec. 21 following a massive premiere event in Paris, which lured crowds of overjoyed fans and was attended by Star and the entire cast, including Lily Collins, Ashley Park, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Kate Walsh, Camille Razat, Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount (who wore a shiny purple suit), Bruno Gouery and Samuel Arnold.

Sometimes, a particular subgenre simply isn’t your thing. I can count the number of haunted house movies I like with no fear of running out of fingers: Robert Wise’s original The Haunting; The Innocents; Crimson Peak; Hausu; Beetlejuice if you count comedies. Lake Mungo is a borderline case, not truly a haunted house movie for me, but a great film. I might also say The Others, but I last saw it about 20 years ago, so who knows? There’s one more I enjoy a lot, and we’ll come to that, but to cut a long story short, The Changeling had a bit of a mountain to climb with me. I’ll say this upfront: if you’re generally into ghost/haunting movies, you can add a star to my grade here.

Watch out. “The Boogeyman” is here.
Based on the short story by Stephen King (originally published in a 1973 issue of Playboy competitor Cavalier and collected in King’s 1978 anthology “Night Shift”), the slender story was first adapted by “A Quiet Place” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods in 2018 for 20th Century Fox.
When Disney acquired the company in 2019, development was canceled, only to be revived in late 2021. That’s when Akeela Cooper (“Malignant”) and Mark Heyman (“Black Swan”) also took a crack at the story and Rob Savage, who had made a splash during the pandemic with his low budget horror film “Host,” was brought on as director.
The resulting film is very different from the King story, following a young girl (“Yellowjackets” breakout Sophie Thatcher) and her family (including psychiatrist dad Chris Messina and younger sister Vivien Lyra Blair) as they death both with the recent death of their...
