The season synopsis reads, "As the CIA’s fight against terror moves closer to home, Joe, Kaitlyn, and Byron enlist a new Lioness operative to infiltrate a previously unknown threat. With pressure mounting from all sides, Joe is forced to confront the profound personal sacrifices she has made as the leader of the Lioness program."

After working with Tom Cruise, director Joseph Kosinski is all set to work with another A-lister in Hollywood. Kosinski will be helming a Formula One racing film, titled F1, starring Brad Pitt. The new film is being produced under Apple Studios and has already proven more challenging to the director than Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to Tom Cruise’s iconic 1986 film, was a massive success following its release in 2022. Capturing the high-flying action of the original film, while also introducing a bunch of new characters, director Joseph Kosinski filled big shoes by taking over the project from Tony Scott.

While several of Joseph Kosinski’s frequent collaborators hopped on board, one of his former colleagues unfortunately lost the opportunity. As per Kosinski, MCU star Josh Brolin was supposed to appear in the supporting role of Beau “Cyclone” Simpson, which later went to Jon Hamm. However, considering the filmmaker’s enthusiasm to work with Brolin, the actor seems to have a massive chance awaiting in Top Gun 3.

Does Tom Cruise still feel the need for speed? Paramount is certainly hoping that he does, now that the studio is formally moving forward with a third installment in the "Top Gun" franchise. This news comes hot on the heels of this week's announcement that the mega-star has struck a shiny new deal to produce and star in films for Warner Bros., albeit a non-exclusive one that will allow him to continue collaborating with Paramount. Then again, for all we know, WB might own Paramount before the year is done, so this might not even be a concern. These are certainly some times we're living in, aren't they?
Anyway, despite the timing of it all, The Hollywood Reporter insists that "Top Gun 3" has been "quietly" in the works since as far back as last fall during the then-ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. "Top Gun: Maverick" co-writer Ehren Kruger is currently...

"From the flames, heroes will rise." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled Fireline, made by the filmmaker Tylor Norwood, who last directed the Robin Williams doc called Robin's Wish. This isn't the only film about firefighters & wildfires, with others including Only the Brave, On Fire, and Bring Your Own Brigade recently. Enter the spectacle and drama of a Megafire (there was even a "gigafire" in California in 2020) burning in California, alongside firefighting teams struggling to save anything they can while protecting each other; revealing the friendship, heartbreak, and the exhilaration of going to war against an elemental force. This film takes audiences into the fire, to feel for the first time what those fighting these blazes face in taking on a life of rising danger as climate change makes big fires more frequent. Shot in 4K, with unprecedented access. This film looks incredibly intense & frightening to watch.

Director Gavin Hood's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was designed to usher in a shiny new era for Fox's "X-Men" films. After the studio's original mutant trilogy came to an ignominious end in 2006 with "X-Men: The Last Stand" (a film that saw alleged sexual harasser Brett Ratner replace alleged sexual predator Bryan Singer at the helm), Fox decided to soft reboot the franchise by making a prequel film about Hugh Jackman's Man With the Adamantium Claws. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" even teed up potential spinoffs by introducing Ryan Reynolds as a pre-Deadpool Wade Wilson and Taylor Kitsch as the Ragin' Cajun himself, the smooth-talking, card-chucking thief Remy LeBeau, better known as Gambit.
Pulling what we'd now call a "Black Adam," Hood's prequel did indeed change the hierarchy of Fox's X-Men Universe ... just not in the way it intended. The film's negative critical response and middling box office turnout led to...

Evan Peters, who starred as Quicksilver in Fox’s “X-Men” prequel series and earned acclaim playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster “Monster” Netflix miniseries, has joined the cast of Disney’s long-gestating “Tron: Ares,” an individual with knowledge told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Peters will star alongside Jared Leto in the sci-fi threequel helmed by Joachim Rønning, which will hopefully begin shooting in August in Vancouver. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.
The Walt Disney Company has been trying to make a follow-up to “Tron: Legacy” for over a decade. The first “Tron,” which earned two Academy Award nominations — but none for its then-groundbreaking special effects — earned just $50 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. That was seen as a disappointment in 1982 but built enough of a cult audience for Disney to roll the dice in 2010 with the $170 million budgeted “Tron: Legacy.”

I believe Jeff Bridges is one of the most charming actors of the last 50 years, and I'm not alone. Pauline Kael went one step further by calling Jeff, in an oft-quoted line, "[maybe] the most natural and least self-conscious screen actor who ever lived." I don't know if Kael harbored any sort of attraction toward Bridges, but I can't claim that my appreciation of him is entirely platonic.
He's not only a fine figure of a leading man (with an even finer head of hair), but he also possesses an easy charisma that has bolstered his screen presence from "The Last Picture Show" in 1971 all the way to "The Old Man," his recent Hulu show. If Bridges has ever given a bad performance, please enlighten me because I have yet to find it among his many credits. Instead of any further hagiography, here is a breakdown of Jeff Bridges' best movies.

This week in home viewing, the whale topped a bear. “Cocaine Bear” ($19.99) came out on PVOD after its third weekend — standard timing for Universal. Since it was still strong in theaters, home availability would usually guarantee across-the-board #1 rankings at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.
But surprise — A24 lowered the price of “The Whale” to $4.99 just before Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor win. The film soared to the top at iTunes and Google Play right after the Oscars.
Both sites rank by transaction, which benefits any lower-cost rental. However, Darren Aronofsky’s film is also #2 at Vudu, which counts by revenue. (Vudu has “Cocaine Bear” at #1).
Meantime, Oscar juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — available on streaming as well as theaters — stayed strong at $19.99. That price may have discouraged some buyers, but it still placed fourth or fifth on all charts.
“A Man Called Otto” (Sony), with its price reduced to $5.99, continued its strong chart showing.

Apple TV+ has released a trailer for their upcoming series "Shantaram," based on the 2003 international bestselling novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts. "Shantaram" stars Charlie Hunnam, who is returning to television after eight years.
The novel is loosely based on the real-life experiences of the author and tells the story of escaped Australian convict Lin Ford (Hunnam). As he tries to disappear and hide out after his prison break, he settles in Bombay, India in the 1980s. (Bombay was the name used for the city until 1995 when it became known as Mumbai.) There’s a moment in “Day Shift,” a new vampire action movie on Netflix, that might be easy to miss, but for those paying attention, speaks directly to a moment happening in cinematography right now that’s changing how films are made.
It happens during a high-speed car chase in which Jamie Foxx’s beleaguered San Fernando Valley vampire slayer is trying to elude various baddies. It’s a zippy sequence for sure, but what really set me off (I rewound and watched it again) is when the camera is launched from inside one of the cars, traveling through the sunroof and, still in motion, continuing to capture the action. It’s a small flourish but a truly incredible one that embodies not just how Hollywood is changing the way modern action movies look, but also how they feel.
“In this business, everything’s been done already,” Perry told TheWrap.

Composer Joseph Trapanese was determined to make the music for “America the Beautiful,” National Geographic’s six-part series launching July 4 on Disney+, different than that of any nature documentary to date.
“Hollywood is so guilty of misappropriating culture,” Trapanese says, “tapping into a culture and throwing it around, willy-nilly.” So he determined to score the continent-spanning story of North American flora and fauna with authentic musical touches as well as a very modern mix of traditionally orchestral and more contemporary sounds.
Series producer Dan Rees and executive producers Vanessa Berlowitz and Mark Linfield said they “didn’t want the typical nature documentary sound,” the composer explained.
Trapanese called an old friend, Sean Carey of indie folk band Bon Iver (they had previously joined forces for a song in 2017’s “Only the Brave”), and asked him to collaborate on an opening song. In turn, Carey enlisted friends from the Native American...

Exclusive: WME has signed Eric Warren Singer, one of the screenwriters behind Paramount’s summer smash Top Gun: Maverick.
The Tom Cruise sequel nearly 30 years in the making hit theaters on May 27 and has thus far grossed over 907 million worldwide, registering as the highest grossing film of 2022. Singer shares screenplay credit on the Navy aviator action-drama with Ehren Kruger and Christopher McQuarrie, having worked from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, which was based on characters created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.
Singer came to Top: Gun Maverick after collaborating with its director Joseph Kosinski on the critically acclaimed drama Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, which starred Josh Brolin, Miles Teller and Jeff Bridges.
He co-wrote that film, based on Sean Flynn’s GQ article “No Exit”, with Ken Nolan.

Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are used to movies taking a long time to get made. After all, they were hired to write Deadpool in 2010 and didn’t see the finished film onscreen until 2016. But in the case of their passion project, the new Netflix movie Spiderhead, even the process of getting the Merc with a Mouth into movie theaters was left in the dust.
“This was about a 10-year process,” Reese tells Den of Geek on a Zoom chat witth Wernick by his side. “It took almost 10 years to get when that thing was brought to us until the movie was on the screen.”
That thing is “Escape from Spiderhead,” a short story penned by acclaimed literary fiction writer and essayist George Saunders. The original story, published by The New Yorker in 2010, is about a man named Jeff who is sent to an experimental prison after he kills someone.

Like the majority of his “Top Gun: Maverick” co-stars, Miles Teller sat in the cockpit of a fighter jet during the filming of several high-octane dogfight action scenes. Unlike his co-stars, Teller came down with an allergic reaction from taking to the skies and discovered he had jet fuel in his bloodstream.
“We landed, and I thought, ‘Man, I’m not feeling too good,’” Teller revealed to Seth Meyers on “Late Night” this week (via IndieWire). “I was really hot and I just started itching like crazy. So I got out of the jet. I’m just covered in hives. Head to toe. I go to a doctor. I do a blood analysis. I’m in an oatmeal bath that night. I have sensitive skin anyway, truth be told, Irish-Scottish skin. No dyes, no nothing.”
The results of Teller’s blood analysis confirmed that he had “flame-retardant, pesticide and jet fuel” in his bloodstream.

Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski is having a hell of a year. His first film of 2022, a little movie called, “Top Gun: Maverick” had been the number one movie in the world at the box office, and is currently the #1 domestic movie of the year, having grossed over 400 million stateside, even beating out Marvel’s “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness.” Having grossed 755 million so far and maybe on its way to cracking 1 billion, Kosinski has yet another movie on the way.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Top Gun: Maverick.”]
It’s good to be Joseph Kosinski. To be clear, it’s good to be anyone associated with massive smash hit “Top Gun: Maverick,” but it’s especially sweet to be director Kosinski, whose last feature was Sony’s 2017 hotshot firefighter drama “Only the Brave.” Today, he’s the shepherd of Tom Cruise’s unlikely sequel, which has inspired not only huge box office returns but also incredible critical and fan response.
What could top that? We already know: Sci-fi thriller “Spiderhead” debuts on Netflix on June 17 and Kosinski is now prepping the Apple-backed Formula 1 feature starring Brad Pitt.
As “Top Gun: Maverick” continues breaking box-office records and enjoying excellent reviews, the thoughtful and relatively soft-spoken Kosinski was game to answer all our burning questions, from cut scenes to how key cameos came together, who the “enemy” really is, how the film could have ended, and...

“Top Gun: Maverick” reunites filmmaker Joseph Kosinski with Tom Cruise after their work together on “Oblivion,” but that’s not the director’s only reunion in the film. Kosinski also re-teamed with Miles Teller, who earned acclaim for the director’s under-seen “Only the Brave” and has a role in his upcoming Netflix movie “Spiderhead.” Teller stars in the “Top Gun” sequel as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Maverick’s late friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. The “Whiplash” star was at the top of Kosinski’s mind when he was mapping out the story for “Maverick.”
“I was actually in post on ‘Only the Brave,’ this was May 2017, so Miles Teller was on my mind,” Kosinski recently told Vulture. “The relationship in that movie is a very paternal one with Josh Brolin’s character. So I showed Tom a picture of Miles because Miles has blond hair in that film. And...

With “Top Gun: Maverick” finally in theaters and “Spiderhead” on the way to both theaters and Netflix later this month, Joseph Kosinski is having a career moment. And it’s a well-deserved moment. Kosinski’s filmography includes some sturdy and seriously undersung movies, like 2017’s “Only The Brave” and his 2010 debut, “Tron: Legacy.” While neither film entirely won over audiences, they showcase the skills he honed to make “Maverick” one of the best blockbusters in recent memory (read our review).

The constantly glitching third “Tron” sequel flickered out at Disney when the studio landed bigger, shinier franchises like Marvel and “Star Wars,” “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski said in an interview with Vulture.
Perhaps now better known as the director of “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski said a three-quel called “Tron: Ascension” was fully written and storyboarded before it was de-rezzed. The script turned the “Tron” concept inside-out by bringing computerized characters out into the real world – an idea that the 2010’s “Legacy” spent much of its runtime setting up, as the film ended with grid-only character Quora (Olivia Wilde) arriving on Earth’s material plane.
The 400 million global box office haul for “Legacy” wasn’t enough to get an immediate greenlight for a third film, Kosinksi said especially after Disney acquired other high-profile sci-fi and action franchises. “Legacy” was a success by all standards of a “cult hit,” however, from its glassy,...

Joseph Kosinski is flying high off the success of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which debuted to a record-breaking 160 million over the Memorial Day weekend frame. The sequel is the first bonafide box office success for the director, who started his feature directorial career with Disney’s “Tron: Legacy.” That sequel earned 400 million worldwide, but that sum wasn’t enough for Disney to allow Kosinski to pursue an intended sequel under the title “Tron: Ascension.”
In a new interview with Vulture, Kosinski confirmed he had storyboarded and written the entire third “Tron” movie when Disney pulled the plug on the project in 2015. As the filmmaker said, “I got so close. I really tried.” Kosinski’s idea for “Tron 3” was to invert the franchise’s core structure. Instead of human characters being sucked into a video game world, the video game world would bleed into the real world and the film would...

Jeff Bridges is reflecting on the hardships he faced during his fight against both cancer and Covid-19. The Only the Brave actor, who first opened up about his lymphoma diagnosis in 2020 and is now in remission, explained that while chemotherapy "worked fast" on shrinking the tumor in his body, the treatment also stripped his health "defenses." "That's what chemo does," he noted in an interview with People published May 26. "It strips you of all your immune system. I had nothing to fight it. Covid made my cancer look like nothing." While battling both at once, Jeff said he felt like he was "dancing" with his "mortality." "I was pretty close to...

This review of “Top Gun: Maverick” was first published on May 12, 2022, after its premiere at Cannes Film Festival.
The young pilots in “Top Gun: Maverick” are warned at one point about a steep aerial climb that will subject them to massive G-force. Their bodies will feel like they weigh 2000 pounds, they are told, with their skulls crushing their spines, and breathing will feel like an elephant is on their chests pressing down on their lungs.
It’s a sensation not unlike the film’s relentless onslaught in its mission to entertain, delight and move audiences; “Top Gun: Maverick” resembles an amusement-park ride in all the worst ways, in that every second feels designed to provoke a response. It’s as much an entertainment machine as a roller coaster.

Given how busy an actor’s schedule can get, it’s not that rare to have multiple projects premiering over a short period of time. It’s rarer for directors. Joseph Kosinski not only has Top Gun: Maverick opening worldwide on Memorial Day weekend; his Netflix thriller Spiderhead premieres June 17.
“I’d prefer some space but the circumstances have demanded otherwise,” Kosinski tells Deadline. “The good thing is that they are very different films playing in different mediums (theatrical vs streaming). I’m going to try and embrace the madness of opening two movies back to back,.”
After being handpicked by Tom Cruise to lead the next chapter in the long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster classic that launched the movie star’s career, Kosinski has spent that last five years getting this film in front of audiences. Of course, like with so many films, the Covid-19 pandemic forced those fans to wait a little longer.

The world is not the same place it was in 1986, when “Top Gun” ruled the box office. In Ronald Reagan, America had a movie star for a president, and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson as its honorary ministers of propaganda. The same year that “Platoon” challenged the United States’ militaristic track record, “Top Gun” sold a thrilling if narrow-minded fantasy of American exceptionalism — of boys and their toys, of no-homo bromance and what it means to be the best. Three years after Tom Cruise flipped the bird to a Russian MiG fighter plane, the Berlin Wall fell. Two years later, the Soviet Union collapsed.
One could argue that our new, post-Cold War world didn’t need a “Top Gun” sequel. (Tom Cruise himself once insisted as much.) But one would be wrong to do so. Building on the three-parts-steel-to-one-part-corn equation that director Tony Scott so effectively set 36 years earlier,...

Joseph Kosinski knows his way around a long movie. His feature films "Tron: Legacy," "Oblivion," and "Only the Brave" all surpass the two-hour mark, but the editing team of the highly-anticipated "Top Gun: Maverick" surely had their work cut out for them. According to an interview with Empire, Kosinski confessed to having shot around 800 hours of footage for the film. He put the length in perspective by noting that the hour amount equated to as much footage as all three "Lord of the Rings" movies combined. Apparently, Kosinski was serious about his need for speed. "Top Gun: Maverick" takes place more than...

Following a staggering number of pandemic-related release date changes, Paramount Pictures’ “Top Gun: Maverick” is finally flying into theaters May 27. The sequel to the Reagan-era blockbuster (also starring Tom Cruise) will first stop over at the Cannes Film Festival for an out-of-competition premiere. This year’s festival runs May 17–28. Watch a brand new trailer for the film below.
This will be the first time in three decades that a Cruise movie has played at Cannes. His last appearance on the festival’s lineup was Ron Howard’s “Far and Away” in 1992.
Once again, the film finds Cruise in “Mission: Impossible” mode, helming all of his own jaw-dropping stunts. “For 34 years you guys have been very patient with me, and I felt it was my responsibility for me to deliver for you,” Cruise told audiences at Comic-Con when the first trailer bowed (several years ago). “Everything you see in this film is very real.

As the 2022 Cannes Film Festival approaches, rumors about the lineup have begun to run rampant. While the full selection of films will be released in April, Hollywood has begun speculating about whether high-profile films including Baz Luhrman’s “Elvis” and George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” will debut at the iconic festival.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that “Top Gun: Maverick” will screen at the festival, likely playing out of competition. While the screening is unlikely to mark the film’s world premiere, it represents a major win for Cannes, adding some serious starpower to the 75th edition of the festival. This will be the first time in three decades that a Tom Cruise movie has played at Cannes. His last appearance on the festival’s lineup was Ron Howard’s “Far and Away” in 1992.

The upcoming Hulu film, “No Exit,” combines quite a few thriller tropes. There’s some dark, snowy weather, a dose of claustrophobia, a secret kidnapping, and a classic whodunnit. Hopefully, it all comes together and works well later this month.

"The trick is... play the man, not the hand..." But does that also apply to real life and not just poker? 20th Century Studios has revealed an official trailer for a thriller titled No Exit, an intense thriller adapted from Taylor Adams' 2017 novel of the same name. This film will be debuting direct-to-streaming on Hulu this February. During a blizzard and stranded at an isolated rest stop Visitor's Center up in the mountains, a college student discovers a kidnapped child hidden in a car belonging to one of the people inside. This sets her "on a terrifying life-or-death struggle to discover who among them is the kidnapper." Starring Havana Rose Liu, Danny Ramirez, David Rysdahl, Dale Dickey, Mila Harris, and Dennis Haysbert. This film reminds me of Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, about a group of strangers who gather in a snow storm but everyone is not who they say they are.

Director Damien Power made a well-received indie horror film in 2016 called "Killing Ground," and now he's back with "No Exit," a snowbound suspense thriller written by "Ant-Man" scribes Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. Based on a 2017 novel of the same name, "No Exit" centers on a young woman who is waylaid by a blizzard, rerouted to a local visitor's center to wait out the storm, and soon discovers that one of the five strangers inside is hiding a dark, disturbing secret. Check out the trailer below.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.
