The title "Mal di Pietre" (in Italian) / "Mal de Pierres" (in French) means "Evil Stones/Stone Pain/Stone Ache". In the context of the novel, it refers to the protagonist's kidney stones. While the English title, "From the Land of the Moon", comes from an excerpt of the novel: "Her whole life she had been told that she was like someone from the land of the moon..."
The film received a 7-minute standing ovation at the end of its screening at the 69th Cannes Film Festival.

Javier Cámara was originally cast to play the husband of Marion Cotillard's character, but was later replaced by Alex Brendemühl.
In the novel, the action takes place in Sardinia (Italy), while the film is set in France - in Provence, the French coastal town of La Ciotat, the Swiss alps and Lyon.
