The mainstream film industry seems like it’s finally ready to accept that animation can also be used to tell adult-oriented stories, but there are still very few animators that specialize in creating hand-crafted frights. In fact, most of the popular spooky animated films out there were actually directed by the same legendary filmmaker – the insanely talented Henry Selick.
However, after making it big in the ’90s with The Nightmare Before Christmas (as well as the less successful but still entertaining James and the Giant Peach), Selick decided that it was time to try his luck with live-action storytelling, a decision that led to the infamous 2001 flop Monkeybone. However, despite the film’s reputation as a nearly incomprehensible mess, today I’d like to discuss how this oddball production might still appeal to modern-day horror fans.

Exclusive: Greg McLean, director of the Australian drama series Territory, which is currently sitting at No. 3 on Netflix’s list of its Top 10 TV Shows in the U.S. after premiering October 24, has signed with Range Media Partners for management.
Billed as the Aussie version of Yellowstone, the six-part series follows the generational clashes that threaten to tear the Lawson family apart when Marianne Station is left without a clear successor. Sensing this once-great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions — rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners — move in for the kill. With billions of dollars at stake, everyone wants a piece of the pie.

The late nineties and early 2000s marked the peak of Brendan Fraser’s career as a leading man. The 1992 comedy classic, Encino Man put him on the map in a big way, and he had several other comedy hits throughout the decade, including George of the Jungle (along with an underrated drama called School Ties). But, it was 1999’s The Mummy that truly elevated him, with him cast as the wisecracking, Indiana Jones-style hero in what turned out to be one of the year’s biggest hits.
Yet, one movie Fraser did pretty soon after The Mummy has all but been forgotten, the live-action/ stop-motion hybrid Monkeybone, which was directed by The Nightmare Before Christmas’s Henry Selick. In it, Fraser played a harried cartoonist who meets his most famous creation, Monkeybone (voiced by John Turturro) while in a state of limbo following a car accident. Bridget Fonda, Chris Kattan and Rose McGowan co-star.

Under the looming eyes of the Plaza and Golden Nugget hotels, Life Is Beautiful returned for the second night of its “Big Beautiful Block Party,” and this night was all about the tracks: music tracks and train tracks. The festival grounds sit adjacent to an active rail line, giving several train conductors a drive-by view of the side-by-side stages. On multiple occasions throughout the two-day festival, freight trains ploddingly rolled by during sets, prompting conductors to honk their horns and spark revelrous applause from the crowd.

Back in April, we heard that Greg McLean, the director of the horror films Wolf Creek, Wolf Creek 2, Rogue, The Darkness, and The Belko Experiment (as well as the survival thriller Jungle), had signed on to direct the action horror movie Graveyard Smash from a screenplay by Old Henry and Would You Rather writer Gus Krieger… and while that project is expected to start filming this year, McLean is already looking ahead to his next project, as Deadline reports that he will be writing and directing a supernatural thriller called The First Exorcist, with production to take place in Victoria, Australia sometime in 2025.

Theater owners have been trying to use smell as a way to heighten the cinematic experience since before "talkies" came into existence, and from the late 1920s until the early 1960s, many attempts were made to add smell to the mix to make things more immersive and memorable for audiences. There was even a so-called "battle of the smellies" between multiple companies vying to dominate this niche market. One of the contenders, Smell-o-Vision, crashed and burned after 1960's mystery comedy "Scent of Mystery" didn't live up to its potential, and later, the technology was listed on a Time reader survey of the Top 100 Worst Ideas of the 20th Century.
Some filmmakers, like John Waters and Robert Rodriguez, have leaned into the smell idea, making movies where scratch-and-sniff cards were handed out to audiences as they entered the theater, and Regal's 4Dx system currently utilizes a smell component. But now,...

Chris Van Allsberg's picture book "Jumanji" was first published in 1981, and it quickly became a staple in elementary schools and libraries, read widely and joyously by several generations of kids. The book won a Caldecott medal, and Allsberg would go on to write other children's classics like "The Z Was Zapped," "The Polar Express," and the "Jumanji" sequel "Zathura."
The premise is fun: Two kids, bored at home, find a jungle-adventure-themed board game called Jumanji in their attic. When they play it, however, they find that the dictated events of the game manifest in their house. When the game cards tell them they've run into chimpanzees, chimpanzees appear in their kitchen, and more and more animals begin wreaking havoc as the game progresses. It's only when the game ends that the mayhem ceases.

Although never named in any entries of the franchise, the deadly aliens in the "Predator" series are a species called the Yautja (pronounced "Yah-oot-Cha"). The films themselves do little to explain where they come from and what their civilization might be like. What little we know is based on seeing a few of them as intergalactic big-game trophy hunters, but is this true of their entire society? Is their civilization centered around the hunt? Or are the Predators we've seen pariahs, the Yautja equivalent to big-game trophy hunters like Walter Palmer, widely criticized for his participation in the controversial killing of both Cecil the lion and a protected ram in Mongolia?
In 2010's "Predators," Royce (Adrien Brody) quotes Hemingway, "Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter." Like us,...

Normally, the summer movie season would kick off with a Marvel superhero movie, but this May, we’re doing things a little differently. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This year and for the first time since the pandemic, Marvel isn’t launching the month of May. Instead, Universal jumped on the date for its new action comedy “The Fall Guy,” loosely based on the popular ’80s series starring Lee Majors. Two of the Oscar-nominated stars from last year’s blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenom unite for this new action rom-com from filmmaker David Leitch (“Bullet Train”). Those stars, of course, are Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who were nominated for Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s Best Picture-winning “Oppenheimer,” respectively, two of the biggest movies of 2023. “The Fall Guy” premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival and even played at the annual exhibitors’ convention, CinemaCon,...

Disney’s “Space Mountain” has been reignited.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, whose credits including “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and the two Michael Bay-produced live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, have been hired to write a new screenplay based on the beloved Disney Parks attraction, TheWrap has learned.
Jonathan Eirich from Rideback is producing the feature, along with Joby Harold (who wrote an earlier iteration of the project) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse. Ryan Halprin of Rideback is executive producing.
The original Space Mountain opened as the centerpiece of the Magic Kingdom’s version of Tomorrowland in 1975, part of the expansive Walt Disney World resort outside of Orlando, Fla. The ride is known for its strikingly graphic design — comprised of a cone and spires that jut heavenward (and can be seen as part of John Hench’s early concept art) — and its thrilling, coaster-in-the-dark aesthetic. The thriller The Woman in the Yard, which is coming our way from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and director Jaume Collet-Serra, was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but it was recently bumped off the Universal release slate entirely to make room for another Blumhouse / Universal collaboration, the Wolf Man reboot directed by Leigh Whannell. (Wolf Man is now scheduled for a January 17 release.) The release date shake-up isn’t slowing down The Woman in the Yard‘s momentum, though. Deadline reports that the project has just added another cast member: Russell Hornsby of The Hate U Give and Fences.
Hornsby joins the previously announced Danielle Deadwyler of The Devil to Pay and Till in the cast. Okwui Okpokwasili of The Exorcist: Believer and I Am Legend is also in there.

When the Veronicas went over to John Feldmann’s house in Los Angeles last year, the plan was just to share some coffee and meditate. The Australian twin sister duo, made up of Jessie and Lisa Origliasso, are longtime buddies of Feldmann, who was the lead singer of band Goldfinger before becoming pop-punk’s foremost producer.
During a recent Zoom call from her beachfront home on Australia’s Gold Coast, Jessie describes one moment of “spontaneous creation” with Feldmann: The three of them ended up writing the songs “Perfect” and “Invisible” that very day.

If one were to search for "Disney Recycled Animation" on YouTube, one would find several videos showing side-by-side comparisons of 2D animated Disney films recycling the same bits of animation. It's not much of a "gotcha" if you know anything about the painstaking reality of what it takes to complete a traditionally animated feature film, nor is recycling shots something limited to films or television. If anything, animators repeating themselves is as inevitable as writers using their favorite turn of phrase over and over. (That's my cue to wipe away my own flop sweat.)
In the case of Disney's animated "The Jungle Book" and "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh", the two pictures have more in common than suspiciously identical scenes of young boys wandering around in the wild. "The Jungle Book" protagonist Mowgli the Man-Cub was voiced by Bruce Reitherman, who was then fresh off lending his vocals...

American Psycho starring Christian Bale released back in 2000. The character of Patrick Bateman was done to perfection by the then-kind-of-unknown Bale, and things haven’t been the same since. It’s not easy to pull off a character that has the looks, charm, is a good actor, and a little bit of a freak.
And maybe that was the reason the studio back then wasn’t too keen on casting Bale in the lead role. But to their pleasant surprise, the actor gave a performance worthy of being written in the pages of cinematic history.

Daniel Radcliffe has carved a great career outside of his Harry Potter fame. He has become an exciting actor to watch on screen dabbling into various genres that challenge him as an actor. He can be a charming lead in films such as What If, while also committing to darker and edgy roles in films such as Swiss Army Man, Imperium, and Jungle, among others.

He also ventured into TV, starring in the anthology comedy series Miracle Workers. He starred alongside Geraldine Viswanathan, where they played different characters in each season. Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 mega-hit "King Kong" was a marvel of special effects. It employed stop-motion animation, outsize models, rear-projection, and novel composting methods to convince audiences that a giant ape was interacting with human co-stars. Compared to modern, ultra-slick CGI effects, the 1933 King Kong may not look as realistic, but the ape shimmers with life and personality beyond what many modern effects can accomplish. Kong is the most sympathetic character in the movie, as he was kidnapped from his home and exploited by would-be entertainment moguls. Using bi-planes to shoot Kong off the top of the Empire State Building wasn't a moment of triumph for a masterful humanity, but the tragic execution of an animal that doesn't understand what it was thrust into. Not bad for a film that's going to celebrate its 91st birthday in April of 2024.

Describing the warm, fuzzy optimism of an Idles record requires only the most pretentious adjectives — ebullience, exultation, jubilation — words that Idles frontman Joe Talbot would likely laugh at heartily before offering a pint to anyone who said them. This is a band who once titled an album, Joy as an Act of Resistance, and whose 2020 album Ultra Mono brightened the darkest moments of peak Covid lockdown with uplifting punk-rock mantras like, “Let’s seize the day … You can do it,” on “Mr. Motivator” and the chorus to “Kill Them With Kindness.

The episode of Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie covering Wolf Creek was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
One of the biggest and some would say overused tropes in horror movies is the killer stalking people in an outdoor setting. The main series for this is, of course, the Friday the 13th series but we have nearly countless other examples to pull from. Sometimes, like today’s entry, or The Burning, these stories and movies can be based on true events and make it even more frightening. Unlike The Burning, which is based on an urban legend with the true story being far from fact, Wolf Creek (watch it Here) had an original script that was tweaked to be based on the real life killers Ivan Milat and Bradley John Murdoch...

Idles have announced their fifth studio album, Tangk. The LP is out February 16th via Partisan Records, and as a preview, they’ve shared “Dancer,” the lead single that features LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Nancy Whang on background vocals. Check it out below.
Idles drew from a wide swath of influences in making Tangk. The record was produced by the band’s guitarist Mark Bowen, as well as Radiohead’s go-to boardsman Nigel Godrich and Denzel Curry/Vince Staples collaborator Kenny Beats. A press release describes the project as more love-oriented than the post-punks’ previous efforts, which often dealt in political commentary.
“Tangk,” singer Joe Talbot said in a statement. “I needed love. So I made it. I gave love out to the world and it feels like magic. This is our album of gratitude and power. All love songs. All is love.”

San Sebastian’s pix-in-post showcases have often launched standout movies, such as Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria,” winner of the Films in Progress Award at the 2012 edition, plus notable directors, such as Jayro Bustamante, whose praised debut “Ixcanul” played at the festival in rough cut in 2015 before winning the Alfred Bauer prize for innovation at 2016’s Berlinale, breaking out handsome sales.
San Sebastian’s 2023 Co-Production Forum registers two trends: Films that are genre pics or enrol genre tropes or genre blend; an exploration of identity.
Thus year’s San Sebastian Wip Latam skews in another direction. “The films and stories are very grounded in reality, either by there hybrid formal move between fiction and non-fiction, their singular take on daily matters or the very social issues they address,” Javier Martín, San Sebastian Latin American delegate, told LatAmCinema.com.
