A prequel story to 2019’s Disney live-action movie, The Lion King, is upon us. The movie tells us the story of Mufasa, Simba’s father, and his journey to become the king of the jungle. Mufasa: The Lion King will be helmed by director Barry Jenkins of Moonlight fame, unlike Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 feature, with Donald Glover and Beyoncé returning to voice Simba and Nala, respectively.

For the Oscar winner, this Walt Disney production was quite different from the kind of movies he usually makes. And if not for Jeff Nathanson’s script, which had him hooked from the beginning, Jenkins could have almost said no to the project.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a movie that makes more than $1.6 billion at the box office is probably going to get another franchise entry greenlit very, very quickly. Such is the case with the 2019 "live-action" remake of "The Lion King," which didn't leave much of a pop culture imprint, but certainly had an impact on Disney's quarterly earnings report. Thus, this year will see the release of the prequel movie "Mufasa: The Lion King," which just dropped its first trailer during "Good Morning America."
As the title suggests, "Mufasa" is the story of Simba's father becoming king of the lions, despite being born "without a drop of nobility in his blood." The film was directed by Barry Jenkins, who joked at CinemaCon that this "eight-quadrant tentpole" is quite different from the types of films he's known for, but said that its story was "very personal" to him. The British actor’s directorial debut is a visceral love letter to global action cinema that’s an exhilarating, if messy, ride
With his directorial debut Monkey Man, which he also co-wrote and stars in, Dev Patel cements himself both as an action star with A-list ambitions and a competent, resourceful B-movie director. This extravagantly violent and exuberantly messy revenge flick is set in a contemporary India (in a fictional city called Yatana) in which there seems to be a neon-drenched, sleaze-sodden brothel to suit every budget. It’s a place where power and money pollute, and where the poor are not just invisible, they are regarded as being less than human and little more than animals.
Patel takes this idea and runs with it, by incorporating the Indian caste system and class divisions into the story and drawing from the Hindu legend of the monkey-faced demigod Hanuman. When we...

History may not look more favorably upon many directorial debuts than Dev Patel’s inaugural feature Monkey Man. The film is both a wholly entertaining action film and an emotional, rewarding tale of revenge and dramatic character growth and development.
The story of Monkey Man concerns itself with the legend of something called Hanuman – which is the embodiment of strength and courage – that is supposed to serve as a vessel of retribution for those unable to achieve so themselves. At this point, the character of Kid (Patel) is introduced as a young man trying to earn a living participating in an illegal fight club wearing a gorilla mask. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Kid has been scarred by some rather brutal childhood traumas. The result of these incidents initiates and fuels his methodical quest for revenge against the men who destroyed the idyllic life he once enjoyed.

Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man leads the new films at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 592 cinemas through Universal.
Directed, produced, from a story by and starring Patel, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of violence against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother, and continue to systematically victimise the poor and powerless.
Filmed in early 2021, Netflix originally bought worldwide rights to Monkey Man. After Jordan Peele boarded the title as producer through his Monkeypaw Productions, Universal acquired it from Netflix earlier this year. It debuted at SXSW last month.

In the early 2000s, Disney had a knack for making sequels to their beloved animated classics, which were often a notable step down from the original, in both the writing and animation department. But we can look past these subpar sequels, as they were meant for DVD/Video release, thus it didn’t leave a lasting impact on the legacy of the classics.
However, Disney’s trend of remaking acclaimed classics is a whole new low, as not only are they often a step down in quality, but also close the gates for the new generation to experience the originals. Moreover, several things that made the animated releases special often don’t translate well into live-action, with The Lion King being the most infamous example. And fans are once again riled up against Disney’s upcoming Mufasa flick.

The Group C final took place on “The Masked Singer” Wednesday night, with Lizard going home in third place after belting out “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence. Clock and Poodle Moth advanced to the “Shower Anthems Night” Battle Royal, where Clock prevailed but judges Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora used the season’s one and only “Ding Dong Keep it On” bell to save Poodle Moth. While those two contestants advanced to the quarterfinals, Lizard was left to unmask, revealing Grammy-nominated singer Sisqo.
“My family loves the show,” he told host Nick Cannon during his unmasked interview. “Every time we saw a season everybody would always say, ‘Hey! That’s gotta be Sisqo!’ So when I got an opportunity to do it I seized it and it’s been really fun.” He added that during the smackdowns “the Lizard had to embody the spirit of the Dragon.

Easter is behind us, we’re into a new month, and we’re fully into spring … and yet, the box office might be hitting another lull. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
There aren’t many scenarios where “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” doesn’t win its second weekend at #1. Even with a steep drop from its Easter opening, it should still be able to bring in another $30 million this coming weekend, which will be hard to beat.
It might be a coin flip on which of the other two new wide releases might do better, but I have to give a slight edge to “The First Omen,” 20th Century’s prequel to a horror franchise that began all the way back in 1976 with the horror film, “The Omen,” directed by Richard Donner pre-“Superman.” That led to two sequels in 1978 and 1981, even though the original...

Dev Patel’s Monkey Man has raised a lot of chatter worldwide for its hardcore action sequences. The film is set to be deep-rooted in Indian culture and take action to the next level. The film had to go through an intense production process before it was picked up by Jordan Peele. Patel admitted that felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman when his brainchild was picked up by the Get Out fame.
Dev Patel in a still from Monkey Man
Monkey Man will mark Dev Patel’s feature-length directorial debut. The actor who has been spotted in some of the critically acclaimed films like Slumdog Millionaire and Lion will try his hands at action with this upcoming film. However, it was a grueling journey for him and the obstacles faced in the production are as interesting as the film itself.
How did Jordan Peele give Dev Patel his Pretty Woman moment?...

Those teen drama TV series are not to be taken lightly. Because they could produce the most promising Oscar-nominated or winning actors. For example, consider Skins, created by Jamie Brittain and Bryan Elsley.
Every episode usually centers on a specific character or group of characters and the challenges they encounter in their daily lives. Themes of mental illness, dysfunctional families, bullying, and s*icide were also covered in greater detail. Not only did Skins receive positive reviews and good box office results, but it also gained a cult following. Of course, this is due to the stellar cast.
Dev Patel in Skins
Jordan Peele also agreed on this. Unbelievably, he has not watched Skins but he still gives the popular TV series credit for “producing” two of the best actors in contemporary film history—Dev Patel and Daniel Kaluuya.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Denis Villeneuve’s Dunes: Part One share a unique but fascinating connection: their cinematography. Both films, despite being modern releases, boast a visual style reminiscent of the 1970s. This unique appearance was achieved by meticulous design.
Robert Pattinson as Batman
Reeves and his cinematographer Greg Fraser took a unique approach to capturing the visual elements of The Batman. Taking inspiration from gritty 1970s thrillers like Clute and All the President’s Men, they’ve deliberately opted for classic anamorphic lenses.

It’s tough to be a fan of someone when you’re not quite sure what aspect of their work you’re a fan of. I read a big bunch of Osamu Tezuka books, mostly published by Vertical, more than a decade ago – Mw, Ayako , Ode to Kirihito, Apollo’s Song, a few others – and liked them all a lot. They were smart, sophisticated, serious books for adults, with a striking depth of expression and focused imaginative power.
Vertical might have published everything Tezuka did in that vein; I really don’t know. But I haven’t seen anything else similar from Tezuka in my scattered reading since then. The latest attempt was One Hundred Tales , originally published in Shonen Jump magazine in installments in 1971 under the title Hyaku Monogatari and translated by Iyasu Adair Nagata for this 2023 Ablaze edition.

New Delhi-born Indian Canadian filmmaker, Nisha Pahuja, has shared how Ranjit, the Jharkhand rice farmer whose fight for justice for his gang-raped daughter is the story of her Oscar-nominated documentary feature, ‘To Kill A Tiger’, did not get an American visa when the film was theatrically released in the US in September last year.
“We tried to get visas for him and his incredible daughter back in September for the US around the time of our theatrical launch,” Pahuja says in an Instagram post. “They were denied. It was a heartbreaking experience for all of us.”
The post accompanies a picture of Pahuja in red gown with Ranjit, outfitted in a black tuxedo, in the backstage area of the Oscars venue, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “Without doubt, one of the proudest moments of my life,” Pahuja writes.

Since we’re talking about the short films, I’ll accordingly keep this brief. Here are five reasons why “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” will win the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
1. It’s the clear standout in the category.
All five nominees are exceptional — the others being “The After,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Invincible” and “Knight of Fortune.” In a less competitive year, any one of them could easily walk away with the prize. But it’s simply too hard for anything to top “Henry Sugar.” Based on the short story of the same name by celebrated children’s author Roald Dahl, the film is seamlessly adapted to the screen with the same charm, wit and magic of the original tale. “Henry Sugar” features superb acting, exquisite costume and production design, beautiful cinematography and sharp editing. It holds an outstanding 95% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Luc Besson’s DogMan has received another trailer ahead of its release next month, capping off a journey that also saw the film competing for the Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
DogMan is writer/director Besson’s first film since 2019’s Anna and one that has built the most buzz in quite some time. The cast features Caleb Landry Jones, who was remarkable in 2021’s Nitram, and Jojo T. Gibbs, who appears in Past Lives, which is up for Best Picture this year. They are joined by Christopher Denham (Oppenheimer) and Clemens Shick (Star Wars series Andor).
Here is the synopsis of DogMan: “Having just been arrested, Douglas opens his heart to tell the moving story of his life. As a survivor of childhood trauma, with a violent father who forces him to live in the family kennel, he develops a bond with dogs that defies understanding.

Robert Downey Jr. looks like one of the biggest locks at the Oscars after winning the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Oppenheimer.” He’s also nominated at both the SAG and BAFTA Award. Could the latter throw up a surprise victory for someone else?
Downey Jr. is nominated alongside Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Jacob Elordi (“Saltburn”), Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Paul Mescal (“All of Us Strangers”) and Dominic Sessa (“The Holdovers”). Irish actor Mescal poses the biggest threat to Downey Jr’s BAFTA chances. He features in Searchlight Pictures’ “All of Us Strangers,” which stars Andrew Scott as Adam, a screenwriter who enters into a fledgling relationship with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Mescal).
Mescal won at the BAFTA TV Awards in 2021 for his starring role in the limited series “Normal People.” He reaped his first film bid last year for “Aftersun,...

The Directors Guild of America Awards are on February 10, and while the race for Best Film Director looks like a runaway for Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Best First-Time Feature Director could be a little more suspenseful. The top two contenders are also first-time Oscar nominees this year: Celine Song for “Past Lives” and Cord Jefferson for “American Fiction.” They’re both Oscar-nominated for their screenplays, though. So which will be the industry’s choice for their direction?
As of this writing Song is the heavy favorite to win with leading odds of 31/10. Betting on her to win are all 11 of the Expert journalists currently making their predictions, 10 out of the 11 Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round, 23 of the Top 24 Users who got the best scores predicting last year’s DGA winners and 23 of the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine multiple years’ results. Jefferson trails in...

Among the various distinctions “Everything Everywhere All at Once” incurred by winning seven awards at the 95th Oscars was becoming the first film in a dozen years (and ninth overall) to conquer both supporting acting categories. This rare occurrence involved Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis preventing their respective “The Banshees of Inisherin” competitors from accomplishing the same goal, as the sets of featured nominees from “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” had both failed to do one year earlier. Now, two more pairs of cast mates – who happen to hail from the two highest-grossing live action movies of 2023 – are gunning for entry into this exclusive club.
The concurrent nominations of Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera (“Barbie”) and Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) bring the total number of films that have ever vied for both Best Supporting Actor and Actress to 110. Although this marks the third...
