After announcing the nominees for best film direction yesterday, the Directors Guild of America revealed the slate for TV direction in dramas and comedies today.

Excuse us if we go out on a limb here, but something tells us the collective brain trust at The Academy is glad this awards season has mercifully come to an end. After an incredibly diverse 86th Academy Awards ceremony, where "12 Years a Slave" took Best Picture, a Mexican filmmaker won Best Director, Lupita Nyong'o earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and John Ridley won Best Adapted Screenplay, the Oscars appeared to take a step back in 2015. It wasn't just that "Selma" was snubbed in a number of major categories. The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag became a historical footnote that will haunt the Academy for years (and, trust, it will be back again if the public wills it). But it had more to do with all white nominees in the acting categories than just "Selma" itself. This also brought to light that it was yet another year without a female nominee in the Best Director category,...

The 87th Academy Awards may have gone largely as expected, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t learn some lessons on Sunday night. For instance: 1. Oscar voters really loved a Sundance movie … just not the one we thought they loved. Going into the show, the conventional wisdom had “Birdman” in a tight race with Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” for Best Picture, and that Linklater had a real shot at Best Director, Patricia Arquette had sewn up Best Supporting Actress and Sandra Adair was a shoo-in for Best Film Editing. Arquette won, all right, but Linklater lost to Alejandro G. Iñárritu,...

The 87th Academy Awards are finally over. Now that we've all had a chance to try and rid ourselves of our massive celebratory hangovers, let's tackle the most important question of the day: How did Kristopher Tapley and Gregory Ellwood do with their 2015 Oscar predictions? We're so glad you asked because we were curious, too! It turns out that Tapley is the co-King of the Oscar pundits. He predicted 20 out of the 24 categories, matching Kyle Buchanan of Vulture. Ellwood predicted 17 correctly, tying him with Mark Harris of Grantland, but behind Glenn Whipp of the La Times and Steve Pond at The Wrap (but also ahead of a lot of other famous bylines). Let's take a moment and see where we both scored and where we failed miserably, because we expect we'll never live it down. With only one major hit among the best picture nominees, the Nielsen ratings for last night’s Oscar ceremony predictably took a major hit versus last year's. Sunday’s roughly 220-minute telecast was the least-watched Academy Awards since 2009, drawing an average audience of 36.6 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen data. Ratings for the Neil Patrick Harris–hosted event were down about 15 percent from 2014’s preliminary tune-in estimate of 43 million viewers. Among adult viewers under 50, the show suffered a similar percentage decline, falling to an estimated 10.8 rating (compared to a preliminary 12.9 last year with Ellen DeGeneres). But historically, the demo ratings were more disturbing than the overall ratings: Only 2008’s kudos, hosted by Jon Stewart, appear to have notched a lower adults under 50 rating since Nielsen began tracking such things in the early 1990s. On the bright side, even at reduced levels, the Oscars still drew...

The 87th Academy Awards pulled in 36.6 million total viewers on Sunday night — 6.4 million fewer from 2014’s 10-year high, comparing fast nationals to fast nationals. In final numbers, 2014’s Oscars rose to 43.7 million viewers, which was 7.1 million more viewers than last night’s show can currently boast. Sunday’s telecast hit a six-year low in total viewers. Aside from The Walking Dead and HBO’s trio of comedies, Girls, Togetherness, and Looking, there was a severe lack of new episodes from some of our favorite TV shows last night, but it was all for good reason, as much of America’s attention was directed to the biggest film event of the year: the Oscars, which aired on ABC. The 87th Academy Awards, which were hosted by Neil Patrick Harris (who starred alongside the Oscar-nominated Rosamund Pike in David Fincher’s latest film Girl Gone), were a mixed bag, a night filled with many memorable speeches and deserving winners but also a lot of missed jokes and a running time of over thirty minutes longer than the scheduled telecast, meaning that the show didn’t end on the East Coast until after midnight. Since there were so many high and low points throughout the show, let’s recap...

The 87th Academy Awards on ABC ran quite long Sunday night, and the late show’s early ratings reflect dwindling viewer interest — at least when compared to recent years. The 2015 Oscars telecast averaged a 25.0 household rating/38 share per the overnight 56 metered markets measured by Nielsen. That rating is down 10 percent from last year, hitting a four-year low. In the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic, the Academy Awards delivered a 14.2/36 last night per Nielsen’s local people meter. The 87th Academy Awards aired on ABC, and while TVOvermind is primarily a television website and not a film one, we would be remiss if we didn’t discuss one of the biggest events that will air on TV all year. Not to mention that quite a few TV stars were in attendance at the Oscars last night, from Jane the Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez to Scandal‘s Kerry Washington to the upcoming star of CSI: Cyber, Patricia Arquette (who pulled off the small feat of, you know, winning an Oscar last night). The 87th Academy Awards wrapped up a few hours ago and the biggest upset of the night was that Richard Linklater's Boyhood took home neither the Best Picture or Director Awards, both of which went to Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Not even the rain could spoil the gorgeous fashions on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood prior to the 87th Academy Awards.
Gold may have been the winning color of the evening, but white was the color on the carpet. From Faith Hill and Marion Cotillard to Julianne Moore and Lupita Nyong’o, the actresses were in jaw-dropping works of art.
60’s mod was the theme of the Dior Couture gown worn by Marion Cotillard. Proving why the French invented couture, it was hands down our best dressed of the night. The hair, the earrings – it was exquisite.

Faith Hill was stunning in white in J. Mendel. The whole thing was beautiful.

Another year, another Academy Awards ceremony and another host.
Neil Patrick Harris made a bold debut on the Dolby Theater stage, with an all-singing, all-dancing performance alongside Anna Kendrick to kick the show off.
At one point, the actor took a swipe at the Academy's lack of diversity, saying: "Tonight we celebrate Hollywood's best and whitest, sorry… brightest."
He also asked Octavia Spencer to guard his briefcase of Oscar predictions under the watch of Robert Duvall and Eddie Redmayne, which sparked a bit of outrage on Twitter for apparently being humourless and slightly racist.
But how do you think Harris performed? Did he match Ellen DeGeneres and other greats before him, or did his hosting skills fall flat?

Lights, camera, action! Julianne Moore has won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in Still Alice.
This is the first win after four prior Oscar nominations for Moore, who plays Alice Howland, a woman struggling with an aggressive form of Alzheimer's disease.
"I read an article that said that winning an Oscar could lead to living five years longer. If that's true, I'd really like to thank the Academy because my husband is younger than me," Moore joked, before going on to speak about the battle against Alzheimer's.
"So many people with this disease feel isolated and marginalised, and one of the wonderful things about movies is they make us feel seen, and not alone."
Moore finished with an emotional tribute to the film's makers Richard Glatzer, Wash Westmoreland, who were unable to be present owing to the former's ill health.
The role has already earned Moore a BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award.

Eddie Redmayne has won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
The transformative performance follows Hawking over three decades, focusing on his diagnosis with motor neurone disease and his marriage to Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones).
"I don't think I"m capable of articulating quite how I feel right now, but please know this, I am fully aware that I am a lucky, lucky man," Redmayne said, before breaking off with a "Wow".
The actor went on to dedicate his award to "all of those people around the world battling Als," and to the Hawking family.

There were definitely some serious fashion offenders this year! The 87th Annual Academy Awards went down in Hollywood on Sunday, and there were a ton of stars who missed the mark with some pretty questionable red carpet looks. Lady Gaga -- per usual -- stole the spotlight and not in a good way with her giant white sequin gown. The extra fabric in the shoulders just looked way too boxy on the singer and we don't know what the pop star was thinking with those awkward red gloves! At least from the neck up, the "Born This Way" songstress looked pretty great -- we loved Gaga's bold red lip and smokey eye. While Nicole Kidman normally nails her red carpet looks, the actress really disappointed in this gold sequin number. While the actual fit and color of the dress don't look half bad on the red-headed beauty, the "Grace of Monaco...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished presenting the winners of The 87th Annual Academy Awards, resulting in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s masterpiece Birdman taking four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel also came out a big winner, taking four Oscars of its own, including Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, and Best Original Score.
As usual, we had a few surprise upsets along the way, including Big Hero 6 besting assumed frontrunner How to Train Your Dragon 2 for Best Animated Feature, in addition to Whiplash swiping Best Film Editing away from Boyhood (the winner of the American Cinema Editors’ award for Drama). The latter was particularly surprising because it was assumed that the Academy would, at the very least, give it the two awards it was...

Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese appears in a new Apple iPad television advertisement.
An excerpt of the filmmaker's 2014 commencement speech at the Nyu Tisch School of the Arts plays over the advert, which will air during tonight's (February 22) Oscars.
The commercial follows students from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, who are given the task to create a film using an iPad.
The young filmmakers are then shown writing, filming, editing and scoring their projects, while Scorsese's words are played over the footage.
"Every scene is a lesson. Every shot is a school. So let the learning continue," Scorsese says in the clip.
The 87th Academy Awards will air live from Hollywood tonight on ABC. Sky Movies Oscars will broadcast the show in the UK.
