Within hours of Mean Girls’ (2024) box office-topping release, bootleg video of Avantika’s song-and-dance number, “Sexy,” circulated social media to the praise of people far and wide.
Avantika plays a new take on Amanda Seyfried’s Karen in Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.’s film adaptation of Tina Fey’s Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was based on Fey and Mark Waters’ 2004 comedy classic. (The original Mean Girls was also based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes.) Like the Karen before her, Avantika’s version of the character is also endearingly slow on the uptake, often garnering the film’s best jokes and biggest laughs, but Fey, who returned as screenwriter, opted to not just play all the hits again, such as Karen’s “weather report.”
Avantika didn’t get the chance to meet Seyfried before or during production, but a couple of days after the...

Daft Punk will continue their 10th anniversary celebration of Random Access Memories this November with a “drumless edition” of their Grammy-winning 2013 album.
Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), due out November 17, features all 13 songs from the original LP, but as the title suggests, the drums and percussion have been stripped from the defunct dance duo’s tracks.
Ahead of the reworked LP’s release, Daft Punk has shared the “drumless” version of the ballad “Within”; although already one of Random Access Memories’ less percussive tracks, the “drumless edition” take spotlights Chilly Gonzales’s piano work.

Daft Punk are still keeping the good times rolling as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their final studio album. After sharing an extended deluxe version of it earlier this year, the French house duo have announced Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), a track-by-track reimagining of the record without a single drum beat.
While it’s hard to imagine most Daft Punk songs drumless, Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) should pique interest in fans wanting to delve deeper into the layers of the band’s compositions. Pre-orders are ongoing now before the album is out in full November 17th.
See the artwork and tracklist for Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) below.

Daft Punk have unveiled the 10th anniversary reissue of their final album, Random Access Memories. Featuring nine previously-unreleased tracks — totaling 35 minutes of new music — the release offers a unique glimpse into the French duo’s creative process, and pays homage to the celebrated, 2x album that marked the end of their run.
The duo also unveiled a video for the new track “Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo),” featuring Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, which they note will be their final music video. Watch it below.
“Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo)” was recorded during the initial sessions for Random Access Memories at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady Studios in New York. Built around a literal loop, the song (and its animated video) allude to the confluence of humanity and technology, a theme present throughout the album. “It’s lovely and bizarre, like a human,” Casablancas said in a statement. “And, like a human,...

Meta Won Approval to Buy a Virtual Reality App, But FTC Laid Groundwork to Halt Big Tech’s Next Deal
The Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit to block Facebook parent company Meta’s acquisition of virtual reality app developer Within presented the court with a legal question that used to exist on the periphery of antitrust law and is now critical to the government’s efforts to rein in big tech: How to assess proposed deals by dominant firms in nascent markets.
During the seven-day trial in December where the FTC challenged the deal because it allegedly put Meta in prime position to monopolize VR fitness apps, the company questioned how the acquisition of one app in a developing market could harm competition. U.S. District Judge Edward Davila approved the deal in a blow to the agency’s bid to dismantle the tech giant but advanced one of its key legal theories arguing that the purchase of competitors in budding markets can hurt competition. Meta’s strategy of acquiring competitors in fledgling industries is drawing more attention from antitrust enforcers.
In a lawsuit filed on Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission sued to block Meta, formerly known as Facebook, from buying game developer Within in a bid to limit the company’s reach in the virtual reality market. The complaint advances relatively untested theories arguing that antitrust laws account for actions taken by a firm that isn’t yet a monopolist but is positioned to become one. The legal action potentially indicates a pivot from the agency toward limiting acquisitions by dominant firms in markets for growing technologies.
“This Acquisition poses a reasonable probability of eliminating both present and future competition,” the FTC wrote in the complaint, which was filed in California federal court. “That lessening of competition may result in reduced innovation, quality, and choice, less pressure...

Shaun of the Dead famously launched with the tagline “Zom, Rom, Com”, as in “zombies”, “romance” and “comedy”. It is fair to say, that is a tough combination to get right, and Shaun of the Dead naturally nailed it.
Werewolves Within takes these themes, adding a dash of small-town Americana charm and running with them. There is a healthy chunk of “Slither” (criminally overlooked) and a little bit of The Thing style paranoia, as a scientist gets drunk as a natural reaction to what her “science stuff” has told her about the recent, grizzly deaths. Our film kicks off, with our instantly lovable Finn (Sam Richardson) heading to a small town, “Beaverfield”, shortly before a blizzard hits, to start his new job as the park ranger.

Updated following 1:38Pm post: The former governor of California and Terminator franchise star made a big splash today at “The Big Screen Is Back” conference to exclaim, “The big screen is back, ladies and gentleman!” Arnold Schwarzenegger then led the whole auditorium at the AMC Century City 15 in a chant of “We are back! We are back!”
The conference, which was produced by the Motion Picture Association, National Association of Theatres, LA movies studios and NYC distribs, and key PR gurus Terry Curtin and CAA Head of Motion Picture Marketing Megan Crawford, is one of the first in-person events for the motion picture industry which showcased theatrical distributors (big and small) summer slates. The event, from what we have gathered, was put together at the last minute and with all good will and intentions, and it wasn’t about showing unseen footage from the next Marvel movie or 2022 theatrical release.

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

Watch the Trailer for Doors: "Without explanation or warning, a number of mysterious, alien “doors” suddenly appear in every corner of the globe. While many of those that encounter these sentient visitors feel the strange urge to interact with them – never to be seen again – others stay behind to face the potential threat of what their ultimate agenda towards mankind is. In a rush to determine the reason for the arrival of these cosmic anomalies, the government enlists volunteers to brave the journey to enter the doors so that we might learn more about their origin or purpose. But even these brave volunteers are not prepared for what lies beyond the threshold. The story of the doors is told through multiple perspectives: a ragtag band of high school students discover a door for the first time, volunteers explore the parallel reality beyond the threshold, and a lonesome hermit manages the...

With the Black Lives Matter movement at the center of the national conversation this year, some companies are responding to the issue in their own operations by “leaning into” challenging conversations about topics like race and equality.
The current moment, in the wake of the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, “has put such a bright spotlight on how uncomfortable people are, still, talking about race and talking about Black-White race relations,” MyKhanh Shelton, WarnerMedia senior vice president of enterprise inclusion said Wednesday during the TheWrap’s annual media conference TheGrill,

With “Myth: A Frozen Tale,” Disney Animation has crafted a visually stunning virtual-reality short film — a project that flexes its Vr muscles but deftly uses the technology in service of storytelling. Sometimes Vr experiences feel like proof-of-concepts straining to justify their 3D settings. “Myth,” by contrast, employs virtual reality so effectively it feels like the film’s emotional punches would be pulled if it weren’t in Vr.
“Myth,” from director Jeff Gipson, is a kind of origin story about the “Frozen” land of Arendelle. The eight-minute film takes the viewer on a largely wordless fantasy trip of the four elemental characters — wind, fire, water and earth — that appear in “Frozen 2.”
Disney Animation is showing the Vr short at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The idea for “Myth” was sparked at last year’s Sundance, when Disney Animation chief creative officer Jennifer Lee, writer-director of the two “Frozen” films (alongside director...

Tyler Ritter is revealing the first portraits of his and wife Lelia Parma’s son, Benjamin Parma Ritter, who was born on June 9. The Arrow star is opening up to Et about life as a dad and how the unexpected surprise of becoming a parent has made him more connected to his late father, acting icon John Ritter, who died at 54 from an aortic dissection.
“Some people had braced me for it, saying, ‘It’s going to be the most beautiful moment of your life and probably the hardest moment of your life knowing your dad’s not here,’” Ritter tells Et about preparing for the moment that he would become a father, nearly 14 years after the death of his own. But any hesitation was wiped away the moment his son was born. “It was actually more affirming to see him born,” he says, wondering “if what I’m feeling now for Benjamin is what my dad...

Have you ever found yourself suddenly enveloped in a nightmare? You must be dreaming, right? Either that, or you’re in an immersive Vr escape room, trying to save your own life while a friend fucks with you from the sidelines! That was the fun, panicked predicament I found myself in when I headed to The Microsoft Lounge to play The Belko Experiment – Vr Escape Room Experience created by my talented friend, David Yarovesky.
The game, co-created by Dan Clifton, is an interactive puzzle which puts you in the middle of The Belko Experiment. You have fifteen minutes to solve the clues in order to save your own life. It’s designed for the Htc Vive and Oculus Rift headsets through the Steam Platform, so you have a bit of a choice. Did I mention that it is Free? Logic needs to be thrown completely out of the window when watching creepfest Within. It’s directed by Phil Claydon of Vampire Killers fame – the 2009 B-movie about lesbian vampires enslaving a village’s womenfolk, only for unlikely heroes James Corden and Mathew Horne to come along and save the day. Indeed, this was well before Corden conquered Tinseltown with his celebrity carpools.
The point is to aim ‘middle-ish’ with Within and there’s enough entertainment and ‘look away now’, jumpy bits to be had. In fact, the whole premise is nicely spun along, namely guessing whether the sinister situation is ‘living’ or ‘supernatural’ in cause. The Alexanders (Vartan, Velazquez and Moriarty) move neighbourhood to a new house whose occupants have long gone, leaving a garage full of memories. Gore Verbinski’s new psychological thriller “A Cure for Wellness” follows a young exec (Dane DeHaan) sent to retrieve his company’s CEO (Jason Isaacs) from a mysterious wellness center only to discover that the spa’s treatments are not what they seem. The film has received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics ahead of its release date, with IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich giving it a B+ and said that it’s a “thrilling reminder of what can happen in the increasingly rare instance when a visionary filmmaker is given serious cash without constraints.”

For whatever reason, seeing a PG-13 rating for Baltasar Kormakur's Everest is a little upsetting for me and lowers my anticipation a little. Not because I felt it was a story that needs a bunch of blood and gore, but I felt given its focus it would be a little more intense. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see as the rating does promise some "intense peril and disturbing images." This week also brings a rating for Good Kill from director Andrew Niccol starring Ethan Hawke as a fighter-pilot turned drone-pilot. It's carrying an R-rating and the reason includes "violent content including a rape". I'm probably ignorant of another time I've seen "rape" in a rating reason, and I'm sure it has happened way more than I realize, but I think that's a smart addition on the part of the MPAA. Finally there's Within, a new thriller from...

Warner Bros. just announced that it has pushed New Line’s horror sequel The Conjuring 2, a follow-up to the acclaimed hit screamer that grossed an astounding $318M off a $20M production budget, back from 2015 to an unknown date in 2016. The release date change came coupled with an announcement that an unspecified horror title will take The Conjuring 2‘s previous October 23rd, 2015 slot.
Unlike recent spinoff Annabelle, which grossed around $167 million but got savaged by critics, this sequel will rejoin Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they investigate a new paranormal case. It’s expected that The Conjuring 2 will continue the original’s style of old-school scares inspired by real cases of alleged paranormal activity. As on the original, Chad and Carey Hayes are scripting, though Conjuring director James Wan is not expected to return.
However, one possible reason for the date change could be to potentially...
