Plot: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust have been doing a good job managing the emotions of their beloved human, Riley. But, as she enters her teenage years, they have their hands full dealing with a whole new slate of emotions, including the obstructive, controlling Anxiety.
Review: Ever since the pandemic, Pixar’s been struggling to recapture the zeitgeist its animated films were once so easily able to dominate. For a long time, it was almost uncanny how each film was hailed as a masterpiece, only for the company to fall off when suddenly their films became more commonly viewed via streaming than in theatres. Some say the movies got to be too specific, although for me I’d take a highly personal story like Elemental over the more generic Lightyear any day. At any rate, the company is said to be undergoing a pivot towards more universal stories, although...

Oh, so you think being a kid is an emotional rollercoaster, huh? Try becoming a freshly minted teenager.
When Inside Out hit theaters in 2015, Pixar’s deep dive into an 11-year-old’s brain quickly ascended to top-tier status; the combination of old-school cartoonishness, a color scheme that left no hue untouched, a celebrity voice cast with comic chops, and a perfect combo of childlike imagination and mature insight into the moment you start leaving childhood behind established it as one of the company’s best works to date. A follow-up was inevitable,...

We are going to take a wild guess that when you first heard the news that 2015’s Oscar-winning “Inside Out” was getting a follow up you immediately thought, “Oh, no. Not a sequel to a beloved animated movie. This can’t be good.” Well, if it’s from Pixar, three “Toy Story” sequels, “Finding Dory,” and “Incredibles 2” are pretty strong evidence that it might not just be good, but potentially even better than the original.

Let’s get the worst of it out of the way: We estimate, at best, a $700 million total domestic gross for June, or 30 percent down from last year. We’ll close the month at least 25 percent below the first half of 2023. There’s no mystery as to why: fewer high-impact releases, with last year’s strikes still taking their toll.
June also has three potential breakouts with “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) Friday, “Inside Out 2” (Disney) June 14, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) June 28. They also have high expectations which, if met, would go some way to restoring confidence. Fall short and the argument of “Well, this movie was never meant to be a blockbuster” will have run its course.
Everyone knew that 2024 would not be a great year. It was never going to equal the $9.1 billion of 2023, but $8.5 billion was the hope and $8 billion was the consensus.

If anyone’s created any animated magic in the West, it’s Disney and Pixar. Although connected since 2006 (Pixar started off as an independent studio before being acquired by Disney), the two studios have had different policies for a while, but while they still release films somewhat independently, a balance has been found and it is now more difficult to tell a Disney production from a Pixar one; two decades ago, which is not t along, it was very easy to do. But, regardless of the magic and the historical importance, both studios have been struggling for a while now in the financial sense. Workers have been laid off, projects have been put on hold and their overall number has been reduced, while those that have been released are not doing that well at the box office.

The trailer pulled in more than 170 million views in its first day of availability, but will fans be able to stream it before the end of 2024?
It’s safe to say that the sequel to Disney’s 2016 animated hit “Moana” has been hotly anticipated by audiences. The teaser trailer for “Moana 2” was released on Wednesday, May 29, and according to the studio, it has racked up 178 million views in its first 24 hours of availability, which is a record for an animated Disney film. Viewers who want to stream it at home are in for a bit of a wait, but I’ll use past Disney releases to try and predict when “Moana 2” will be available to watch on-demand.
Key Details: The “Moana 2” trailer beat out old record-holders like “Inside Out 2,” “Frozen 2” and “The Incredibles 2.” As a Disney animated movie, “Moana 2” will stream on Disney+...

May ended up being more than a bit of a letdown at the box office, yet the summer movie season continues on with three more major franchise sequels (or prequels) and a few other attempts at variety. Read on for Gold Derby’s June 2024 box office preview.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney/Pixar – June 14)
Disney and Pixar Animation are hoping to make a comeback with this sequel to Pete Docter‘s 2015 Oscar-winning animated blockbuster, which grossed $850.6 million worldwide after opening with $90.4 million domestically. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel introduces a number of new emotions including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, Envy voiced by Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri, Paul Walter Hauser voicing Embarassment, and Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui (because it’s a French emotion). Mindy Kaling‘s Disgust has also been recast with Liza Lapira from “The Equalizer.” In the “before times,” there was little reason for this not to open with more than $100 million,...

Thanksgiving may be months away, but audiences are already getting ready to feast on Moana 2.
A trailer for the movie was viewed by 178 million people in its first 24 hours this week, more than any other trailer for a film in the history of Disney’s animated empire, which is made up of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. (Moana is from Disney Animation.)
In terms of trailer viewership, the previous record for Pixar was Inside Out 2 (157 million), and the best for Disney Animation was Frozen 2 (116 million). The Moana 2 trailer also came in above Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (113 million).
The Moana 2 trailer will play before Inside Out 2, which opens in theaters June 14. The upcoming Pixar sequel is tracking to open to $80 million-$85 million, although one service believes it will cross $90 million. Both films are good news for Disney’s animation empire, as Pixar, in particular, has been struggling.

How quickly times change. There once was an era when Pixar didn’t think it needed sequels and could just go from original story to original story. In fact, in 2016, Pixar’s president Jim Morris said there were no Pixar sequel plans after Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles 2,” something of a response to the underwhelming reception to “Cars 2” and, to a lesser degree, “Toy Story 3.

It’s looking like Disney will make a big comeback at the Thanksgiving box office: Their Moana 2 trailer which dropped Wednesday has become the studio’s most watched ever for an animated movie, clocking 178M views in 24 hours.
That traffic sails by previous record holders Inside Out 2 (157Mm) and Frozen 2 (116Mm).
The figure also comes in above Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (113Mm).
Views are solely from online across TikTok, YouTube, X, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. There were very positive reactions for the animation, love of the original film and character fanship. Moana, Maui, and Pua were standout characters with audiences calling out how Moana is one of their favorite Disney characters of all-time. All this is very good considering this was a project originally conceived as a Disney+ series that the studio flipped to the big screen.

Today, Paramount+ announced that Academy Award winner Holly Hunter will star in the upcoming original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy.
The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the galaxy’s most legendary places. Produced by CBS Studios, it will begin production later this summer.
“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across-the-board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek.”

Another insider familiar with Strauss’ moves indicated that the exec is looking to pursue other creative endeavors. It is unclear whether the now-vacated position will be filled and who will step in if so.

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.
This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.
Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.
Mexico opened to $2.5M at No.

The domestic box office at $2 billion currently this year is dragging 21% behind the same January-April spread last year, and when Universal’s Fall Guy commences the hot moviegoing season this Friday with a hopeful $35M, expect summer to drag some more.
That’s because the lack of product due to the actors’ strike has made a backloaded May through Labor Day frame in what will be lucky —lucky— to hit $3 billion. That’s a $1 billion less than last summer’s $4.09 billion per Comscore and -27% off. More bad news about summer: It’s not going to catch up the year any more against 2023.
Essentially, expect less and hope for more. Remember, no one saw Barbenheimer and Sound of Freedom coming last summer and that trio collectively minted $1.15 billion. If anything, summer 2024 is more about getting moviegoers back into the habit of moviegoing than breaking any records.

Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.
It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.
Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.
Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

The trailer for Kevin Spacey’s new film, Peter Five Eight, has been released from Invincible Entertainment. The new trailer comes just a few weeks after Spacey released another of his annual Christmas video skits of him reprising his popular character from House of Cards, Frank Underwood. In his most recent entry, Spacey controversially brought in former Fox News host, Tucker Carlson, to interview him in character where he teased a race for the White House. And now, Spacey is back in his first leading role since controversy plagued his image and his career in 2017. In Peter Five Eight, Spacey seemingly adopts his Underwood-esque southern drawl again until it’s revealed that he’s an undercover contract killer.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. In the history of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, only two sequels have ever won, and they were both from the “Toy Story” franchise: “Toy Story 3” (2010) and “Toy Story 4” (2019). Can “Across the Spider-Verse” achieve the same rare feat?

Layoffs are expected to hit Disney-owned Pixar Animation Studios later this year.
Tech Crunch, which first reported the news, suggested that this could affect as much as 20 percent of Pixar’s 1,300 workforce, though The Hollywood Reporter understands this estimate is higher than what is actually being planned. According to Tech Crunch, layoffs may include employees hired to create content for Disney+.
THR has reached out to Pixar for comment.
If layoffs do occur, it would follow another rare round of layoffs at the Disney-owned studio. Last June, Pixar was hit by the Disney layoffs, which affected 75 employees, including Lightyear director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman.
Since the start of the pandemic, Pixar — which maintains its campus in Emeryville, outside San Francisco — has seen its remarkable success streak suffer. That includes Lightyear, its 2023 return to theatrical exhibition, which flopped.

Universal Pictures ended 2023 as the dominant Hollywood studio at the global, North American and international box office for the first time since 2015, ending a dominant run by Disney reaching back to 2016.
Universal Pictures, which released 24 films compared to 17 from Disney, earned $1.94bn at the North American box office, while international added $2.97bn for a $4.91bn global haul, the studio executives said on Tuesday.
This was just enough to edge out Disney, which despite a difficult year with several flops, managed $1.9bn in North America, $2.92bn internationally, and $4.83bn at the global box office.

“You never know if they like you for who you are or what you are,” Anna Nicole Smith once said before she passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2007. The endearing model, actress, and television personality often found herself a subject of misinterpretation and ridicule when she wanted to taste life, be loved, and make people smile. Thankfully, a new biopic, Hurricanna, is now filming and aims to show the sweeter side of the beloved blonde bombshell. A first look at Sylvia Hoeks as Smith is here, prompting fans to double-take before venturing into the Uncanny Valley.
Hoeks stars as Anna Nicole Smith in the upcoming biopic, with Holly Hunter, Mark Duplass, and Nicholas Hamilton. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse started the month of June hot as the Sony animated film made over $650 million worldwide overall. This is coming off a financially weak first film. Many audiences were skeptical about Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and opted to skip it. However, the first film had rave reviews and beat The Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks The Internet for the Best Animated Film Oscar. Into The Spider-Verse found life on Netflix, and gained a huge following that resulted in such huge box office numbers so far. What’s amazing about the film is that despite being immersed in...

The Walt Disney Company is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a hefty new Blu-ray box set containing 100 of its best animated films.

On the final weekend of the summer box office season, Sony Pictures/Escape Artist’s “The Equalizer 3″ has taken the top spot on the charts with a solid opening weekend of $35 million from 3,985 theaters over the 3-day weekend, with a $42 million 4-day opening when Monday estimates are included.
That result would be the second largest ever on Labor Day weekend, standing only behind the $94.6 million opening of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” in 2021. “Equalizer 3” sports a $70 million budget co-financed by Tsg Entertainment and Eagle Pictures, and with strong audience metrics including an A on CinemaScore should be on its way to matching the $102 million domestic run of “The Equalizer 2” in 2018.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” became the 14th film in box office history to pass $600 million in domestic grosses, adding $13 million over the 4-day weekend to bring its total to $612 million in North America. With $1.38 billion worldwide,...

Warner Bros’ Barbie ain’t missin’ no steps as the Greta Gerwig-directed title is clicking past the $600M mark at the domestic box office in its 43rd day of release.
Note that it took Top Gun: Maverick 47 days to cross that threshold, with the Tom Cruise pic ending its stateside run at $718.7M. Barbie is pacing 2% ahead of the Top Gun sequel’s running total at the same point in time. It took Avatar: The Way of Water 40 days (final total $684M) to cross the six-century mark at the domestic box office.

It was going to happen eventually, but now the box office record is official. Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has become the highest-grossing movie of the 2023 calendar year, at least domestically.
It did so by slowly creeping up on the $574.3 million grossed by Universal’s animated “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” earlier in the year, passing that mark on Wednesday to hit $575.4 million. Still, this means 2023 has now seen two movies enter the Top 15 for all-time highest grossing movies domestically, with “Barbie” still playing well in theaters and vying to get to the $608.6 million made by Disney-Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” back in 2018.
Globally, “Super Mario Bros.” is still victorious with $1.36 billion worldwide, but “Barbie” is already at $1.28 billion, so it only needs another $72 million globally to become the year’s biggest global blockbuster. Being that “Barbie” hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down, that...

While it has been expected to happen for some time now, it's finally official: director Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" has overtaken "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" to become the biggest movie of 2023 at the domestic box office. It's Barbie's world and we're just living in it. What's most impressive is that the movie still isn't done breaking records and passing milestones, with more dominoes likely to fall in the coming days/weeks. The biggest movie of the year is only going to get bigger.
According to The Numbers, "Barbie" has now earned $575.4 million domestically since it hit theaters in July, putting it just past the impressive $574.2 million total put up by "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" earlier this year. In terms of the bigger picture, Margot Robbie's latest is now the 14th biggest domestic earner ever, sitting behind "Incredibles 2" ($608.5 million). “Barbie” is the latest film to cross the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, a feat accomplished by only 52 other films in history. The oldest film on the list is Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park,” which didn’t crack the $1 billion mark until the film’s 20th anniversary re-release in 2013. The first film to ever crack $1 billion was James Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic,” which still sits at #3 on the list with a whopping $2.2 billion. Cameron, of course, dominates the list with three films in the Top 5 including “Avatar,” still the highest-grossing film ever made.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has more films in the $1 billion club than any other franchise with 10, while Disney has more films on the list than any other studio with 24 thanks to Marvel, Pixar, “Star Wars” and Disney animation and live-action remakes.

Samuel L. Jackson has starred in several hit blockbusters, making his films some of the highest grossing projects seen in cinema. Only a few, like Harrison Ford, have managed to rival or surpass Jackson’s combined box-office intake.
But Jackson felt all he needed was to appear in one more Indiana Jones movie to secure his rank.

Since then, Mulroney has enjoyed a long and lucrative career in film and TV, appearing in hit films, indie movies, thrillers, horror movies, Christmas movies, and just about anything. Mulroney received a SAG Award nomination for his performance in "August: Osage County" in 2013. To celebrate the release of the charming and surprisingly poignant Marcel the Shell With Shoes On – on Blu-ray & DVD from 26th June – we have a Blu-ray up for grabs!
The BAFTA and Oscar-nominated film, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, is the story of a plucky seashell called Marcel and his attempt to reunite with his family. Based on the award-winning 2010 short film that went viral online, Jenny Slate (Everything Everywhere All At Once) reprises her role as the voice of Marcel, with Isabella Rossellini (Incredibles 2), Andy Richter (American Dad!) and Leslie Stahl (60 Minutes) also featuring.
Charming, beautifully animated and surprisingly poignant, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is an inventive and heart-warming tale about coming out of your shell and embracing life. It’s a film that, as The Hollywood Reporter says, has “much to offer when it comes to lessons and laughs”.

When you ask someone about their favorite Pixar film, the answer usually says less about the movie than it does about the person. The legendary animation studio has remained at the top of its game for years because of how its films use their big high-concept ideas to explore fundamental truths. A comedy about talking toys becomes a story about friendship and growing up; a kid’s movie about fish becomes an emotional tale of fatherhood; a film about a rat that likes to cook becomes a sneakily profound story about the nature of art and inspiration. The movies become very personal to each viewer, especially for those who’ve grown up with Pixar’s work and have seen its releases serve as milestones in their lives.
That said, even the biggest Pixar fan alive could probably admit that the studio has been going through a (more than) slight rough...

Pixar’s movie about a rat with ambitions of becoming an acclaimed French chef started off its box office run at a slow simmer when opening to a less-than-flavorable $47 million in summer 2007. Pundits were quick to pronounce Pixar had botched the recipe in a rare miss. But skeptics were proven wrong when Ratatouille began boiling over on its way to earning $623 million at the worldwide box office.
For decades, the revered animation studio that was backed by the late Steve Jobs before being bought by Disney could do no wrong, using the most unlikely scraps to turn out perfect stews again and again that became both commercial and critical hits at the box office buffet.
That all changed in the past several years, capped by the dismal debut of Elemental over the June 16-18 weekend. The movie, a parable about immigration and getting along, bombed with a $29.6 million domestic debut,...
