Ben Wheatley will direct Bob Odenkirk in the action film Normal, which WME Independent is launching at next week’s EFM in Berlin.
Derek Kolstad, a writer on the John Wick franchise who scripted Universal’s 2021 action thriller Nobody starring Odenkirk, wrote the screenplay.
Odenkirk will play Ulysses, who is thrust into the temporary role of the sheriff of the titular small sleepy town after the previous incumbent’s untimely death.
When the town’s bank is robbed by an out-of-town couple, Ulysses begins to learn that the town is hiding secrets and everyone – from the bartender to the priest – is in on it.

Apparently screenwriters Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach didn’t do quite Ken-ough to get “Barbie” considered as an original work for this year’s Oscars, as the candy-colored saga will hereforth only be considered by voters in Adapted Screenplay category, in a decision confirmed Wednesday by the Academy.
The determination was made by the Writers Branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and when Oscar nomination voting begins on Jan. 11, voters will only be permitted to consider “Barbie” in the set category.
The film will join a fairly crowded field of strong contenders of adapted works, including “Oppenheimer,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” and “All of Us Strangers” just for starters. It is assumed that Warner Bros., the studio behind “Barbie,” assumed the Original Screenplay would be less competitive and the property is based more on IP than a previously-produced work.

The Assassin’s Creed series has come a long way from its days as a concept to reboot The Prince of Persia franchise. Assassin’s Creed’s first outing took players to the Middle East, but subsequent entries have explored London, France, and other historic locations across the globe. The latest entry, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, returns to the Middle East, but just because it’s retreading somewhat familiar territory doesn’t mean players will see many familiar faces.
As a quick reminder, on October 5, 2023, Assassin’s Creed Mirage was released for PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5. The game stars Basim Ibn Ishaq (who is not-so-secretly the reincarnation of the Isu Loki) in his early days as a member of the Assassins, long before he met the main character of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Eivor. Unlike more recent entries, Mirage returns to the franchise’s stealth-based roots and restricts players to one city,...

When the original Assassin’s Creed first hit store shelves in 2007, it was unlike anything else you could play on consoles that holiday season. Sixteen years later, we take that game’s winning combination of stealth gameplay, melee combat, parkour traversal, and open-world historical setting—all somehow also wrapped up in a compelling sci-fi thriller—for granted. But that’s because so much of the open-world formula the original title helped pioneer has become the standard language of modern gaming.
It’s why, in recent years, Assassin’s Creed publisher Ubisoft worked to freshen things up with a trilogy of games that emphasized loot-driven RPG mechanics over the original’s more linear, stealth-focused approach. But while those three installments—Origins, Odyssey, and most recently, Valhalla—were undeniable success stories for the franchise, Ubisoft is now going...

All good sitcoms have that one random tearjerker episode tossed in, and for "Futurama" that episode is clearly "Jurassic Bark." It gives us the tale of Fry's old dog Seymour, who tries his hardest to find Fry after he's trapped inside a cryogenic chamber. Eventually, Seymour gives up and spends the rest of his life outside the pizza parlor Fry worked at, waiting in vain for Fry to return. It's a dark sequel of sorts to the previous season's "Luck of the Fryrish," which ended on a more heartwarming note with Fry's brother naming his son after him.
"['Luck of the Fryrish'] gave us the right to try for one of these emotional episodes," co-creator David Cohen explained in a panel for Nerdist. "About once a year would you say we do one? So we did 'Jurassic Bark' with Fry's dead dog, which people care much more about than humans for some reason.

SkyShowtime, the European streaming joint venture of Comcast and Paramount Global has unveiled a teaser trailer for six-part original crime drama series Codename: Annika at the Stockholm International Film Festival outdoor cinema, Sommarbio.

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

Blake Mills has the kind of CV, and accompanying reputation, that leaves little to quibble with. The 36-year-old Los Angeles musician is an ace producer (Perfume Genius, Feist, Marcus Mumford); an in-demand sideman and session player (Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Phoebe Bridgers); and an exceptional singer-songwriter in his own right. But there’s one notion people have about him that Mills finds baffling: That “I’m this extremely capable guitarist who never allows himself to play.”
In other words, Mills doesn’t like to shred. Whether or not it’s accurate,...

News of her release was first shared by Albany Times-Union, which revealed the actress was released Monday, July 3, from a federal prison in Dublin, California, near San Francisco.
The news means that Mack served two of the three years.

When Dn alums Nono and Rodrgio Inada (last seen on our pages here and here respectively) were approached with the challenge of creating the maiden short film for messaging giants Whatsapp they were immediately taken with both the colossal possibilities of the project and the unassailable linkage to the filmmakers’ own backgrounds and zealously launched into the making of film Najia Odyssey. The short centres around basketball giant Giannis Antetokounmpo, a Greek-born Nigerian whose own search to unify his heritage and migrant upbringing was pitched by New York creative agency Translation coupled with the inspired touch of basing the narrative on Homer’s Odyssey. Whilst Odysseus battled mythical creatures, Nono and Inada were equally challenged to create a cohesive, inspiring and narrative journey under the guise of a commercial potentate and they did so with passion, stunning camerawork and the cross-border cohesion of an international team of collaborators. “This is like Homer’s ‘Odyssey’,” declares Brandon Sklenar about the journey of his character Spencer Dutton on the Paramount + drama “1923.” The period western is the latest prequel series to this hit drama “Yellowstone,” but Spencer exists in a world far removed from his fellow Duttons fighting to protect the ranch in the wilds of Montana. The first season of “1923” sees Spencer travel from the wilds of Africa to the waters off the Italian coastline as battles wild animals and runs from his past.

Beau Is Afraid posted the top per-screen average of the year so far and the best limited opening for distributor A24 since Uncut Gems, grossing an estimated $320,396 at four locations in New York and LA for a hefty per-screen average of $80K+ in sold-out shows on both coasts. (Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler had a $105k PSA on five screens in 2019 — a limited-opening record at the time.)

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 6, "Guns for Hire."
Droids took center stage on the latest episode of "The Mandalorian," at least in terms of the morality and science fiction presented on the show. Oftentimes, "Star Wars" has skirted around the issue of droid rights and the morality involved in using droids for labor, but this installment of "The Mandalorian" took it on as the undercurrent for the episode. Naturally, it borrowed from the work of Philip K. Dick, featuring touchstones from "Blade Runner" throughout the episode.
Titled "Guns for Hire," the episode sees Din Djarin and Lady Bo-Katan Kryze tasked by the elected rulers of Plazir-15 with investigating an odd rash of droid malfunctions plaguing their planet. They live in a veritable utopia where the droids handle all of the labor, leaving the organic beings to lives of art and leisure. What's causing these violent malfunctions...

As Nintendo takes its shot at the box office with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the first animated film featuring the iconic mustachioed plumber, the gaming company has been coy about revealing what’s next for the Super Mario video game franchise. But while Shigeru Miyamoto — the legendary video game designer, Nintendo fellow and self-proclaimed “Mario’s mom” — won’t say where Mario is running next, he is forthright about where he won’t be: your smartphone.
Sitting down with Variety for this week’s cover story on the making of the film, Miyamoto said firmly, “Mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games.”
After two moderately successful but dwindling iOS games, plus another that shuttered after two years, Nintendo is pulling Mario away from the mobile market. Released in 2016, Super Mario Run grossed $60 million in its first year, while 2019’s Mario Kart Tour has generated...

Austin Butler is going from the sands of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two to a life of crime for City on Fire, an adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel from Sony 3000 Pictures. In addition to his starring role, Butler produces alongside David Heyman and Shane Salerno. No director or writers have joined the project, but the studio will prioritize the adaptation. City on Fire is the first title in a trilogy, setting up the potential for Butler to star in his first franchise.
According to Deadline, Winslow’s trilogy borrows inspiration from The Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, and Greek tragedies but takes place in a modern setting. “The trilogy focuses on two criminal empires — one Irish, the other Italian — that control all of New England. A modern-day Helen of Troy event tears them apart and starts a brutal war. Butler will play the main character, Danny Ryan, who grows from...

The following article contains spoilers for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods."
"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is in theaters now, and if you've seen it, you know how much it relies on characters and creatures from Greek mythology. Of course, there have been some changes, but from the Daughters of Atlas to Ladon the dragon to manticores, harpies, minotaurs, cyclops, and unicorns, there is a lot of fun lore in here.
In the film, the Daughters of Atlas have come from the Realm of the Gods to find a dangerous artifact — a golden apple from the tree in the Garden of the Hesperides — which could destroy our world. The Shazamily, led by Billy Batson (Asher Angel), aka Shazam (Zachary Levi), have to take them down before they wreck the realm with beings only spoken of in stories and lore. Shazam, the character, is already connected to Greek myth, of course,...

Most of the well-known mermaid films are romantic and upbeat, from the tween fantasy "Aquamarine" to Disney's revolutionary animated feature "The Little Mermaid" (which will be reimagined as a live-action movie in May), and the sex comedy "Splash" where Tom Hanks meets a beautiful mermaid who also happens to be the girl of his dreams. But mermaids can also be a nightmare.
In Greek mythology, mermaids — also known as sirens — are half-human, half-sea creatures who are mysterious and inquisitive, but also deceitful. According to folklore from around the world, female mermaids are harborers of doom. They use their bewitching singing voices to hypnotize male sailors and lure them to a watery death. In Homer's "Odyssey," Odysseus forces his men to fill their ears with wax so that they are not tempted by a mermaid's enchanting song.

When The Gauntlet published Brindlewood Bay, author Jason Cordova realized that he had a framework that could be applied to other tabletop roleplaying game settings aside from mystery-solving grannies that run afoul of fiendish cults. After the success of the Kickstarter campaign last year, Cordova returned to an idea he was kicking around in 2014 called Public Access, which had players narrating weird found footage horror scenes but didn’t have much in the way of game or story. Upon revisiting it, he expanded on the idea with lessons learned from both Brindlewood Bay and The Between, another game of his that uses the same system, while still retaining his original analog horror vision. After getting my hands on Public Access, it’s clear that this RPG sits at a perfect intersection of mechanics and theme, creating a unique experience for both players and game masters.

The Super Mario franchise is not considered to be that difficult in the grand scheme of gaming. After all, Mario is Nintendo’s mascot, and you don’t want your mascot scaring away gamers who can’t beat most of the levels. However, if you think that all Super Mario games are easy…well, you just haven’t played enough Super Mario games.
You know why we’re here, so here are a few things to consider before you browse these rankings.
– This list primarily focuses on the mainline “platformer” Super Mario games (with a few notable adjacent titles tossed in). Super Mario spin-offs are not included, mostly because it’s tough to compare the difficulty of so many different types of games across so many genres.

It should come as no surprise that character actor Tim Blake Nelson — who led the western anthology film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and played the unforgettable Looking Glass in the HBO series Watchmen — has written a novel. After all, he’s always been the bookish one on set. But Blake, who majored in classics at Brown University,...

The first time Cecil B. DeMille parted the waters of the Red Sea, to film the 1923 version of The Ten Commandments, he did it at Seal Beach, CA, just 30 miles down the Pacific coast from Santa Monica. Three decades later, when Paramount Pictures decided to remake the Old Testament tale in Technicolor and VistaVision, the same director returned to do it again, only this time on location on the Sinai Peninsula with thousands of extras provided by the Egyptian army — no matter that the country’s military was rather busy with urgent geopolitical matters at the time. Both versions were massive hits, with the remake serving as the capper to DeMille’s illustrious career.

My favorite tracking shot in film history is not a tracking shot. It's a shot of a tracking shot.
The scene in question opens Jean Luc-Godard's "Contempt," and, visually, consists of little more than a movie camera gliding down a dolly track toward a stationary camera, which serves as the audience's Pov. As the camera moves closer into view, we see that it is shooting, at a 90-degree angle square to our perspective, a young woman (Giorgia Moll) scribbling notations in a book. Eventually, the camera rolls to a stop directly in front of our camera, which is now a low-angle shot of the film's cinematographer, Raoul Coutard, who pans his implement 90-degrees before pointing it downward at the audience. The effect is at once startling and amusing. We have, in essence, locked eyes with the filmmaker.
This may not sound terribly thrilling in writing, but factor in a...

The Story of Film: A New Generation opens at two dozen theaters this weekend — Laemmle Royal in LA, Museum of the Moving Image in NY, Music Box Theatre in Chicago and Brattle in Cambridge. It’s a mix of arthouses, cinematheques, museums and even a few multiplexes for Mark Cousins’ follow-up to his 15-hour, 2011 opus The Story Of Film: An Odyssey. (This one clocks a relatively brief three hours.)
Several theaters are programming repertory series with the release, “which we feel will elevate its profile and continue the conversation,” said Kyle Westphal, head of theatrical sales for Music Box Films, the distributor for both installments.
A New Generation debuted at Cannes to strong reviews, Deadline’s here. Now, Westphal said, the first film, only available in standard definition, has been remastered in HD and both works will be released in a Blu-ray box set. The earlier work, which essentially played...
