Wendy Williams once helped produce a movie about the late singer Aaliyah. But many people weren’t thrilled with Williams telling the singer’s story, including those closest to the star.

In 2014, Williams was behind the release of the Lifetime movie Aaliyah: The Princess of R & B. The feature chronicled the life of Aaliyah’s journey to superstardom, her relationship with acts like R. Kelly, Missy Elliot, and Timbaland.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Williams asserted that she did the movie to do Aaliyah’s story justice. Although she was aware there would be some controversy after helming the project.
“Lifetime needed to tell this story correctly. Fans won’t say, ‘Oh, my God, how could you disgrace her memory?’ And nosy people like me who want to find out things will also be fine,...

Famke Janssen is not sure what Marvel has planned for the X-Men saga but doesn’t shut the door on the idea of reprising her role of Jean Grey / Phoenix.
Janssen originated the X-Men role in the 2000 film and would go on to play the mutant in 2003’s X2 and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The actress also made cameos in 2013’s The Wolverine and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
“I don’t know. I mean, I didn’t expect to come back after dying as Jean Grey,” Janssen told ComicBook in an interview. “I came back as the Phoenix [The Last Stand], and I came back in flashback scenes in The Wolverine, and then in Days of Future Past.”
Janssen noted that reprising the role following the initial films “were all surprises that I never anticipated” and didn’t put past appearing in this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine,...

When Tye Sheridan was just 11 years old, something crazy happened: Terrence Malick came looking for him.
Specifically, the beloved American auteur wanted to cast a trio of young brothers for his “The Tree of Life,” co-starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain. The vast majority of kids Malick and his team saw were — like Texas native Sheridan — totally green to this acting thing.
Sixteen years later, Sheridan isn’t green anymore. The actor is only continuing to build out his resume, adding producing into the mix with his most recent feature film, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “Asphalt City,” which debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival under the title “Black Flies.”
Still, ask Sheridan about where his initial love of moviemaking came from, and it’s like he’s right back on Malick’s set. “I was randomly cast in the film. They recruited 10,000 kids in the state of Texas to come and audition.

Saying that James Marsden rose to fame as Cyclops (Scott Summers) after he starred in Fox’s 2000 flick adaptation of the mutant team, X-Men, won’t be wrong. Playing the mutant Scott Summers, who shoots intense energy beams from his eyes, Marsden made his X-Men team debut alongside Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, and Halle Berry’s Storm.
Despite being a prominent character in Marvel Comics, Cyclops’ role in the X-Men films was nevertheless greatly diminished. And he seemed so unimportant that the third installment of the series, X-Men: The Last Stand, could have done without him.

With the anticipation for the upcoming Superman getting higher and higher with each passing day, it’s natural for the fans to also want to know what the main antagonist will look like to match the superhero’s prestige. For that, James Gunn has brought Nicholas Hoult to play the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor in the project.
Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy in a still from X-Men: Apocalypse
But despite the star being deemed by the co-ceo of DC Studios to be perfect for the role of the main antagonist, the star still has to live up to the legacy of several iterations of the villain over the years in the industry.
While every single version may have had its own charm to it, Hoult believes that Michael Rosenbaum’s version of Luthor in Smallville was exceptional, which is why it’s his and Gunn’s favorite.

Not many people have seen "Madame Web" and an even smaller slice of the moviegoing population like the movie.
It stuck out to me that star Dakota Johnson seems to be under the impression that the film was set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I don't know if this is Sony Pictures feeding the actors and/or their agents misleading information or if movie stars like Johnson (understandably) can't be bothered to learn the nerdy logistics of these franchises.
Still, this got me thinking how the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't have a "no previous superhero roles" bar to entry. Oscar Isaac, who played the villain in the disastrous "X-Men: Apocalypse," was then recruited to star in "Moon Knight." Christian Bale, a generation's Dark Knight, played Gorr the God Butcher in "Thor: Love and Thunder" because of his children's pleading.
In "Madame Web," Sydney Sweeney plays Julia Cornwall, the future Spider-Woman.

For fifty-nine episodes, Sophie Turner played the role of Sansa Stark on the hit series Game of Thrones. For sixty-two episodes, Kit Harington played the role of Jon Snow on that same show. And now Turner and Harington are set to work together again, as Deadline reports that they have both signed on to star in the Gothic horror film The Dreadful! This film is coming our way from writer/director Natasha Kermani, who has previously directed the thriller Shattered, the sci-fi drama Imitation Girl, and the horror film Lucky, as well as multiple short films and a segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/85.
The Dreadful will be set against the backdrop of the War of the Roses, which took place from 1455 to 1487. The story follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law Morwen, who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns,...

If you're an "X-Men" fan, you should be listening to the "Cerebro" podcast. The host, literary agent/"X-Men" historian Connor Goldsmith, and a guest (usually an "X-Men" writer or fan of some repute) discuss a chosen character — both their history and why they resonate.
The 101st episode of "Cerebro" (released May 2023) featured comic writer Jonathan Hickman, who relaunched the X-Men comics alongside artist Pepe Larraz in 2019 with intersecting miniseries "House of X" & "Powers of X" (the latter pronounced like the number 10). For the episode, they discuss En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse, the most infamous X-Men antagonist not named Magneto.
Writer Louise Simonson and artist Jackson "Butch" Guice created Apocalypse in 1986 as the shadowy villain for their book "X-Factor." He was revealed to be an immortal mutant, possibly the very first one. Born in Ancient Egypt, Apocalypse has shaped the curve of history to Herbert Spencer's survival of the fittest ethos.

The agreement, signed on Dec. 31, is described as an extension and expansion of a relationship between Bona and Tsg that began in 2015. The financial terms were not disclosed.
Through the earlier deal Bona committed to providing $235 million to co-invest with Tsg in a slate of films including “The Martian,” “Independence Day: Resurgence,” “The Greatest Showman,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Alien: Covenant” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” most of which were distributed through 20th Century Fox.

With Taylor Swift having been rumored for some time to play the Mutant Dazzler in Marvel’s Deadpool 3, the film’s lead, Ryan Reynolds, remarked on the rampant speculation.
Modern pop music icon Taylor Swift has been tied by fans to the role of Dazzler ever since the run-up to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which was made back in the days when 20th Century Fox held the X-Men's movie rights.
Swift has never actually appeared as Dazzler in a Marvel production, but she was spotted alongside Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy at an early October NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Jets. What’s more, MCU boss Kevin Feige is reportedly a huge fan of Dazzler. All of this has served to fuel the rumor mill concerning the third Deadpool film.

As the CIA characters overseeing the office monitors might say, “My god, it’s Jason Bourne!” TheWrap has learned that Universal has begun early development for what would be a sixth movie in the so-called Jason Bourne universe. Edward Berger, whose Netflix-distributed re-adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front” received nine Oscar nominations and won four, is in talks to possibly helm the next chapter.
There is no screenplay, nor has Matt Damon officially been approached, but the actor who starred in four of the five previous installments certainly has first right of refusal. Damon starred in “The Bourne Identity” in 2002, launching the ongoing spy franchise and reprising in three sequels. Jeremy Renner took over in “The Bourne Legacy,” a spin-off chapter released in 2012.
The Doug Liman-directed smash earned rave reviews and strong word-of-mouth in the summer of 2002, grossing $214 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. It also...

Fans have been waiting 14 years for director Michael Dougherty to get around to making a sequel to his Halloween-themed horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, but Dougherty has stayed busy as the years have gone by, making the Christmas-themed horror film Krampus, directing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and contributing to the scripts for X-Men: Apocalypse, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Recently, there have been indications that a Trick ‘r Treat 2 might finally be moving forward. Dougherty has even said the screenplay has been written. But while he pushes that sequel toward production, he has revealed to Collider that he has an idea for Krampus 2 as well.
Dougherty told them, “We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too. It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, plus “The Marvels” and its post-credits scene.]
It was a bad weekend at the box office — certainly not a “marvels-ous” one — as the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nia DaCosta’s “The Marvels,” arrived in theaters and promptly walked away with a dismal $47 million domestic, $110 million worldwide opening, the worst opening for an MCU film ever. Also not helping: a B CinemaScore, which places the film in the bottom tier of MCU films by that metric as well (only two other MCU films have received that same grade: “Eternals” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”).
It’s unfortunate that DaCosta’s film — directed by a woman of color, featuring a female-centric story with a “diverse” cast of superheroes, and finding its best beats in humor and heart — will become inextricably linked with the “fall” of the MCU, because this kind of box office bust has long seemed inevitable for the ailing franchise.

Actress Olivia Munn is an extremely doting mother, who can’t help but spoil her son Malcolm and fawn all over him. Sharing a cute moment of the two together, Munn, 43, said that she’s the kind of mother who allows “milkshakes for breakfast”. Taking to Instagram, the ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ actress shared the picture and captioned: “I always knew I’d be the kind of mom who allows milkshakes for breakfast.”
To support her argument, Munn shared several pictures of her 23-year-old baby sipping happily on a milkshake while she was fawning over him.
For the first photo, the two posed for a fun selfie as the former television host showed off a super huge smile. Malcolm, busy holding a strawberry milkshake, also smiled for the picture as they hung out outdoors, according to People.
The second photo showed the toddler alone in the photo, still focused on his sweet treat.

Growing up in a multicultural household, Fassbender was exposed to both German and Irish culture. Despite this, he was primarily raised in Ireland and considers himself Irish. He has an older sister, Catherine, who is a noted neuropsychologist.
Fassbender’s interest in acting was stirred at a young age. At 19, he left home to study at the Drama Centre London. However, he dropped out in 1999 to perform in the play ‘Three Sisters’ with the Oxford Stage Company.

It's possible that the 20th Century Fox-financed "X-Men" is the most important superhero movie ever made. There were hit folks-in-spandex flicks prior to Bryan Singer's 2000 blockbuster, but, even with movies like Richard Donner's "Superman" and Tim Burton's "Batman," you could sense a lack of traction. Studios didn't know how to franchise comic book movies back then because the executives didn't read or get comic books.
Singer's film changed this. Stephen Norrington's surprise 1998 hit "Blade" was the Marvel geek aperitif, but "X-Men" was, for Gen-x comic book readers, the realization of a lifelong dream. We never thought we'd get a big-screen adaptation of Marvel Comics' uncanny characters, but the time was right for Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. The advances in computer-generated visual effects allowed Singer to make -- on a smallish budget given the film's tentpole ambitions -- a vibrant comic book movie...

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy responded to rumors that pop star Taylor Swift will join the MCU in next year's mutant blockbuster.
Rumors have been flying that Swift may appear in Deadpool 3 as the sound-powered singer mutant Dazzler. These mumblings were only furthered after the pop sensation attended a Chiefs NFL game with Levy and the movie's stars, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.
This isn't the first time talk of Swift playing Dazzer surfaced, as she was once speculated to appear in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse after the singer appeared in a photo with the movie's writer and leading cast.

Little good came out of "X-Men: Apocalypse." The preceding film "Days of Future Past" was meant to be a fresh start for the Merry Mutants. Instead, director Bryan Singer was exposed as creatively bankrupt; "Apocalypse" rehashes beats from Singer's previous movies like a "greatest hits" compilation. Singer always had little interest in the source material comics and "Apocalypse" showed he was out of his depth trying to make an "X-Men" movie that felt more like them.
This feeling of running on fumes, juxtaposed with a comical misuse of Oscar Isaac's talents, meant "Apocalypse" was the beginning of the end for 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" movies, not a new dawn. It's certainly when their spell over me ended.
The post-credits scene of "X-Men: Apocalypse" in particular is pointless. Its very inclusion was Fox taking a page from rival Marvel Studios, but the sequel set-up doesn't pay off.

Amid their ongoing tumultuous divorce battle, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s second daughter’s name has been revealed, which until now was a secret. According to custody filings, the one-year old is named Delphine.
The exes, who also share 3-year-old daughter Willa, have shared very little details about the little one since her birth in July 2022.
The moniker was included in recent court documents in which Turner asked a judge to put her divorce from Jonas on hold until they figure out the custody of their children, Page Six reported.
After Joe filed for divorce this month to end his four-year marriage to Sophie, the ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ actress sued him for allegedly withholding their kids’ passports and not letting her take their kids to relocate to the UK with her permanently as they agreed upon.
Responding to the lawsuit, Joe slammed Sophie’s “misleading” claims that he has “abducted” his own children.

Once upon a time, in the pre-mcu age, there was an X-Men franchise at 20th Century Fox, and ... it wasn't half-bad! At first!
Bryan Singer's "X-Men" was the first Marvel-derived blockbuster in the history of motion pictures ("Blade" had been a standalone hit before), and the beneficiary of crackerjack casting with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Greenlit on a tight budget by a leery studio, the film's massive success meant Singer got close to carte blanche on the sequel "X2," which delivered the kind of mutant mayhem comic book fans had been jonesing to see on the big screen since Chris Claremont and John Byrne's 1970s heyday.
When Warner Bros. lured Singer away to direct the creepy "Superman Returns," Hollywood cockroach Brett Ratner crawled up and onto the director's chair and delivered the execrable "X-Men: The Last Stand."
The franchise didn't die, but it was threatening to become Wolverine-centric.

The "X-Men" movie "Dark Phoenix" was hurt by upheaval at its studio, 20th Century Fox. The film was developed during the merger between Fox and Disney; in fact, "Dark Phoenix" was released on June 7, 2019, early into the new management's tenure. During that theatrical run, it made only $254 million on a $200 million budget, ultimately losing $133 million in the worst bomb of 2019.
It's tempting to think Disney undermined "Dark Phoenix." The movie was released as a lame duck, the last product assembled before all Marvel properties were back under Disney's umbrella. Marvel Studios would've doubtlessly preferred not to inherit a completed "X-Men" film, so that they could get to work on their own versions of the characters (even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought back some faces from Fox's "X-Men" movies since).
However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

Let me put it this way: Netflix’s latest rom-com, Love at First Sight, took my 4/10 kind of day to a solid 6.5/10. That is me basically saying that the film, which I started watching only for work with less than the bare minimum expectation, made me feel good. There is a severe lack of good romantic comedies these days, which is particularly sad given the chaotic, misery-filled world we live in demands feel-good distractions. And the ones that Netflix churns out every now and then are mostly atrocities in the name of cinema. That is why I would compare coming across Love at First Sight to finding a needle in the haystack.
Amongst the movie genres, romantic comedy is probably the one that is sneered at the most by “Cinephiles.” This doesn’t make any sense to me, considering I have always been an admirer of both Richard Curtis and John Carney.

Most film franchises seem to insist on the escalation of stakes. The first Avengers film centered around saving New York from a horde of aliens; "Infinity War" focused on protecting the entire known universe. This desire to raise the stakes with each new entry often backfires, like when the "X-Men" prequel movies centered their third film on another sprawling end-of-the-world storyline, after two movies in a row where the entire world was at stake. "X-Men: Apocalypse" was the perfect opportunity for a breezier, more slice-of-life storyline, but it's not what fans got.
In the original draft of "The Empire Strikes Back," Luke's final confrontation with Darth Vader and The Emperor was originally supposed to abide by this same rule. For their rematch in the climax of the next film, Director Richard Marquand's first plan was to make the scene "bigger than the fight in 'Empire,'" as he explained...

Bryan Singer‘s X-Men: Apocalypse was one of the most anticipated movies of 2016. Although not movie critics’ favorite, the movie was a commercial success. It grossed $543.9 million on a $178 million budget. X-Men: Apocalypse became the ninth installment in the X-Men film series since the first film, X-Men, was released on July 14, 2000. Despite its flaws and drawbacks, X-Men: Apocalypse helped introduce more characters from Marvel Comics. Unarguably, the film was packed with a star-studded cast. Remembering one of Bryan Singer’s classics, these are the top X-Men: Apocalypse cast and their roles. James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier...
