Streaming services are the bane of my existence. It’s 2024 and there are so many options that it makes my head spin. Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Prime Video, Peacock cover the main streamers but that’s not counting the niches. Like old cartoons? Check out Boomerang. Like anime? Then Crunchyroll is for you. But what about horror fans? Sure, Hulu has its “Into the Dark” label and Netflix is always releasing something horror-related (though I question the quality.) And the horror genre features multiple options with Screambox, Arrow Player, Full Moon Features, and even Tubi. But the subject of today’s spotlight is the best of them all, with a great Ui and wonderful selection of films, nothing can compete with Shudder.
Shudder features the best catalog of horror films out there and is always partnering with horror greats. Just yesterday we saw the release of Infested, which...

A trailer for Prey has just arrived online – and no, we’re not talking about that Predator movie that was just released a while back. This is a new movie called Prey, which Vertical will be giving a theatrical and VOD release on March 15th. It seems kind of soon to be sending another movie called Prey out into the world, but clearly Vertical disagrees. Ryan Phillippe (Shooter), Emile Hirsch (The Autopsy of Jane Doe), and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) star in this “nature run amok” survival thriller, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above. A poster for the film can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil, who previously worked with Phillippe on the 2022 thriller Collide and with Hirsch on the 2022 thriller The Immaculate Room, Prey has the following synopsis: After an extremist militant group threatens their lives,...

We’re forever chasing the thrills that a great scary movie can bring, which is no easy feat the more entrenched in the genre we become. That proves especially true in the current digital age, where there’s an overwhelming sea of options spread across multiple streaming services and platforms that can make finding the scariest offerings tricky. We’re here to help. As we head into the weekend, here’s a roundup of ten of horror’s most intense, bone-chilling movies.
These are some of the scariest horror movies you can and should stream this weekend.

The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.
“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

Five years after "The Nun" became the biggest movie in the history of The Conjuring Universe, Valak the demon nun is back for more. That's right! After being caught in development and, no thanks to the pandemic, delayed for a little while, "The Nun II" is finally upon us, with Bonnie Aarons returning as Valak and Taissa Farmiga suiting up once again as Sister Irene to fight the evil being in the lord's name. Let's get ready to rumble.
It's clear that Warner Bros. has no plans on ending this franchise any time soon, as "The Conjuring 4" and a TV series set in the universe are already in the works. So, does "The Nun II" contain any teases of what's to come? Does this sequel contain a post-credits scene of some kind? We're here to give you a spoiler-free answer to that question, as well as some context to help...

ConjuringVerse sequel The Nun II sets out to atone for the biggest sin committed in 2018’s The Nun: an emphasis on atmospherics and lore over the sinister scares that made Valak (Bonnie Aarons) an instant fan favorite in The Conjuring 2. The Nun II dials up the fear factor, wasting no time establishing the merciless nature of Valak as it takes the “more is more” approach to everything from set pieces to mythology. It makes for a livelier entry that stumbles in its excess.
Set four years after the events of The Nun, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) now lives the quiet convent life as she works hard to put Romania behind her. Helping to distract her is newcomer Sister Debra (Storm Reid), a rebellious young nun who’s taken to Irene’s unwavering patience. Like a startlingly funny sermon delivered by your parish’s creepiest priest, “The Nun II” will leave you smiling despite yourself.
Director Michael Chaves helms this surprisingly clever ninth installment in The Conjuring Universe, and his third at-bat for the horror franchise created by James Wan just over a decade ago. With a story by recent genre genius Akela Cooper — and a script co-written by her, Ian Goldberg, and Richard Naing (“The Autopsy of Jane Doe”) — this smartly crafted sequel-to-a-prequel marks a long-awaited upswing for Warner Bros.’ steadily declining demonology epic.
The exposition-heavy whodunit isn’t much scarier than past installments, and it may not mark a permanent about-face for a franchise that’s been struggling since “Annabelle: Creation” (2017). But “The Nun II” proves an invigorating Second Coming for the returning cast painfully let down by the first “The Nun” (2018) — and a redemptive triumph for The Conjuring’s merciless Mother Superior,...

In the wake of failing to recoup its budget with just $15 million worldwide at the box office, Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter has now been surprise-released at home.

The box office underperformance of The Mummy back in 2017 notably spelled the end of Universal’s “Dark Universe” plans, the film intended to kickstart a Marvel-style universe for the Universal Monsters to hang around in. With the “Dark Universe” dead on arrival, Universal quickly pivoted to smaller one-shot horror tales, kicking off with The Invisible Man in 2020.
Made on a budget of just $7 million, director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man scared up $144 million worldwide right before the pandemic decimated the box office, suggesting that Universal had finally figured out a way to turn their iconic monsters into box office stars again.
But then came Renfield earlier this year, a horror-comedy take on Dracula and his loyal henchman. Made on a reported production budget of $65 million, Renfield was a flop in theaters back in April of this year, sinking its fangs into just $26.7 million at the box office. Irish actor Liam Cunningham’s eclectic career includes playing fan favorite Davos Seaworth in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and starring roles in Ken Loach’s Palme D’Or-winning “The Wind that Shakes the Barley” and Steve McQueen’s BAFTA-winning “Hunger.” Cunningham has won acting prizes at the Irish Film and Television Awards three times. Next up for him is the Amblin and Universal film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” by “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” filmmaker André Øvredal. The supernatural thriller, adapted from a chapter of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula” called “The Captain’s Log,” is set aboard the schooner Demeter, which was chartered to carry 50 unmarked wooden crates from Transylvania to London. One passenger happens to be Dracula. Cunningham plays the captain of the ship, on which strange and horrible events occur. Cunningham also has Netflix series “3 Body Problem,” based on Liu Cixin’s bestselling books,...

There are ominous clouds gathering over the opening weekend of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," which is rather appropriate for a film about a ship's crew who are doomed to become a mid-journey vampire snack. Made for a steep (for a horror movie) budget of $45 million, "Last Voyage of the Demeter" is set to fall short of expectations that were already set very low. Though Variety reported in the wake of Thursday previews that the film was heading for an opening weekend between $7 million and $9 million, Friday's numbers are now pointing to a debut of just $6.5 million, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker's "Dracula," the film was directed by André Øvredal, who has some great horror movies already under his belt, including "Troll Hunter," "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," and "The Autopsy of Jane Doe." "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" brings a chapter of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to new vitality. It pulses with agonizing kill sequences, doused in buckets of blood and torn flesh. Director André Øvredal, known for helming such films as "Trollhunter," "The Autopsy of Jane Doe," and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," smothers the screen with depth and brilliant detail. He doesn't waste a single frame, delivering enough visual storytelling to keep you compelled to dive further into a great, unholy abyss.
"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" stuns with gorgeous cinematography, a smattering of rain-drenched sequences of tension, and plenty of blood-curdling, fang-toothed images that'll haunt you forever. Credit should also be given to cinematographers Roman Osin and Tom Stern for their expertly-crafted work alongside Øvredal. Without them, the film would not contain such an impressive style as it does.

The eponymous ship in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is just as crucial to the story as its ill-fated crew and passengers. What begins as a routine charter carrying private cargo becomes a harrowing fight for survival as Dracula (Javier Botet) uses the isolated Demeter as feeding grounds.
Director André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) enlisted production designer Edward Thomas to bring the Demeter to life, imbuing the schooner with impressive scale and meticulous detail. Thomas is no stranger to epic-sized horror adventures; the production designer is responsible for the thrilling set pieces in Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Monster Hunter.

Even if you don't know his name, you've probably seen the work of Javier Botet. Specifically, if you've watched a horror movie in the 21st century, you've almost surely seen him. Or rather, you've seen his creatures. After scaring the pants off audiences worldwide with his terrifying work in the modern classics "Rec" and "Rec 2," Botet became horror's go-to "monster guy," sliding into the unsettling skins of ghosts, demons, zombies, aliens, and even non-Pennywise incarnations of the titular creature in "It." On the small screen, he played creatures in "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Game of Thrones." On the big screen, his credits include "Mama," "The Conjuring 2," "Crimson Peak," "His House," "Insidious: The Last Key," and so much more. He's the century's definitive monster performer.

André Øvredal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is technically adapted from the chapter from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” in which the famous vampire ships himself to England while feasting on the crew, but this drab and generic piece of mid-August schlock might as well be based on a napkin where someone once wrote: “What if ‘Alien,’ but on big wooden boat?”
The truth of the matter is that screenwriter Bragi Schut Jr. has been tinkering with the idea since his time working at a Hollywood model shop in the early 1990s, but his baby must have gotten lost at sea while treading water in development hell over the last several decades, because the derelict Ship of Theseus that’s drifting into theaters this weekend doesn’t reveal any trace of real passion or serious thought. It’s a movie about people who slowly come to realize over the...

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" might be the ideal stepping stone for younger horror fans not yet ready for the really intense stuff. The film came out in 2019, but it harkens back to creepy older family films like "The Watcher in the Woods" and "Return to Oz" -- that is, films that put their young protagonists in legitimately horrifying situations and left you wondering if they'd make it out okay. "Scary Stories" goes even further by having terrible things actually happen to its heroes. The only problem is it backtracks on this a little at the very end, tacking on a short epilogue that ties up some loose plot threads a little too neatly while also setting the stage for a sequel.
That's far from a dealbreaker, however, and general audiences were just as keen on the film as critics, with "Scary Stories" racking up $95.6 million at the...

It’s now been four years since the release of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the long awaited feature film adaptation of the ’80s/’90s books written by Alvin Schwartz. The film was a success at the box office for Lionsgate, scaring up $104 million worldwide, so why haven’t we gotten a sequel yet? A follow-up was announced, but to date hasn’t come to fruition.
Speaking with IGN this week, André Øvredal (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) confirms that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 is still in active development at this time.
Øvredal tells IGN, “We have a story. We have a script. We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year.

In the latest issue of Fangoria Magazine, The Last Voyage of the Demeter director André Øvredal explains that he wanted his version of Dracula to be “the most horrific, frightening depiction of Dracula that has ever been seen on screen.” He continues, “To do that, we needed a performer who could be agile and do these things that are superhuman.”
This desire led to Øvredal casting Javier Botet as Demeter’s Dracula, and the monstrous take on the horror icon is fully revealed in an official image gallery today.

Known to horror fans for playing terrifying roles in films including [Rec], The Conjuring 2, and It: Chapter 2, Javier Botet is back on the big screen this summer in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and this time around he’s sinking his teeth into none other than Dracula.
It’s no secret at this point that The Last Voyage of the Demeter adapts a chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, centered on a group of characters being killed off one-by-one by Dracula aboard a Russian schooner. Javier Botet plays a bestial version of the iconic bloodsucker in the upcoming horror movie, and we now have a nice clear look at the character design thanks to both a new TV spot for the movie as well as Fangoria’s latest cover story.

Dracula is back on the big screen in Universal’s horror-comedy Renfield, and we won’t have to wait long to see Dracula’s next bloody adventure. Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter is bringing Dracula back to theaters yet again on August 11, 2023, and today the film’s official MPA rating has been revealed. Like Renfield, this one is also rated “R”.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is rated “R” for “bloody violence.”
Based on Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, the horror movie will tell a unique Dracula story on the high seas, and the trailer (below) gave us our first look at this film’s incarnation of the iconic blood-sucker. Unlike many adaptations that depict Dracula as a human being, it seems The Last Voyage of the Demeter is leaning into Dracula being a full-on bat monster.

One cannot discuss the legacy of "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" without talking about Stephen Gammell. The illustrator's original artwork for writer Alvin Schwartz's short kids' horror stories is evocative, visceral, and often disgusting. His black ink drawings depict horrors like a skull-headed monster with runny eyeballs, a grinning corpse with a veiny neck, and howling specters that evoke Edvard Munch's "The Scream." Much to the disappointment of weirdo kids who grew up fawning over Gammell's drawings (like yours truly), later editions of the "Scary Stories" collections replaced his work with art from Brett Helquist at the behest of alarmed parents. However, when it came time to bring the books to the big screen, director André Øvredal and co-writer and...

Russian filmmakers had been doing their best to build up new international cultural relations and embed our country into a global art world. Vladimir Putin has unearthed the hatchet and buried all these efforts by our national talents.
On Feb. 24, President Putin declared war on Ukraine in all but name. But war has been waged inside Russia for years. Culture — cinema to be exact — has become a battlefield. We now have to stand up for the right to talk about issues we have been discussing for decades.
The so-called “gay propaganda” law, the infamous anti-gay legislation, has prevented LGBTQ filmmakers like me from representing my community without demeaning euphemisms. It was impossible, for example, in my country to shoot and release a series about a 15-year-old transgender girl. I’ve seen such stories seep into pitching sessions, only to be killed before getting the green light.
