Memorial Day is usually one of the biggest and best weekends at the box office, but the warped year that is 2024 at the box office continued with neither of the new wide releases blowing up. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.

Saturday Am: This weekend at the Memorial Day box office, the film industry seems to be questioning its existence, ready to jump out of a window. How can a genius, George Miller-directed tentpole prequel to the multi-Oscar winning Mad Max: Fury Road with great reviews and 4 1/2 stars PostTrak exits not be working?
The entire theatrical business is destined for streaming, oh, no! People will forever stay on their couches!
As Cher said to Nicolas Cage in Moonstruck as she smacked him in the face: “Snap out of it!” It’s not really right to make Furiosa, or Garfield, for that matter, the proxies of the Memorial Day box office.
Furiosa is still on track for $31M-$33M. For clarity purposes: The last time a film grossed in this vicinity was the 1980s with Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. However, we stand corrected: It’s the lowest No.

Anya Taylor-Joy took upon the role of Furiosa in the spin-off and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film is the fifth overall franchise and focuses on the titular character which was originally played by Charlize Theron. After Charlize Theron’s exceptional performance as Furiosa, all eyes were on Anya Taylor-Joy to see how she would live up to her predecessor.

While both the film and Anya Taylor-Joy received praise from the critics, it looks like the film still has a long way to go to prove itself at the box office. Surprisingly, Furiosa has become the film to have the lowest opening for a Memorial Day movie in over forty years.

“I am a mother of young kids but, boy, I hope I’m a very different kind of mother than Eva,” says Danish star Birgitte Hjort Sørensen about her character in the Danish psychological drama “Dark Horse,” showcased this week in Canneseries’ official competition.
The story about a mother-daughter toxic relationship, set against the backdrop of addiction, turns on 17-year-old Anna and her mother Eva who move back to Eva’s small provincial Danish town from Shanghai. Their abrupt arrival at Eva’s brother, who runs a veterinarian surgery, is awkward for everyone, as Eva has been silent for years, busy dragging her daughter around the world, in her restless pursuit of new adventures and relationships.
Soon, the unhealthy co-dependent and toxic relationship between Anna and the pill-popper Eva emerges. In an urge to fit in with her school friends and break free from her dominating mother, Anna takes risks.

One of the Nordic region’s biggest providers of premium series, Copenhagen-based REinvent International Sales, will make a splash at this week’s Canneseries festival and MipTV market.
For the second consecutive year, the sales, financing and packaging banner has two titles in competition: the Danish drama thriller “Dark Horse”, due to world premiere in the main competition, and the short form Swedish dramedy entry “Painkiller”, which initially bowed at the Göteborg Film Festival.
“Last year we had the Norwegian political drama “Power Play” which won best series, and the Swedish romantic dramedy “Out of Touch” in the short form section. Canneseries is a great platform to get the hype going on your series,” commented Helene Aurø, REinvent sales and marketing director.
Turning on this year’s competition candidates, Aurø points out that both “Dark Horse” and “Painkiller” deal with mother/daughter relationships.

Exclusive: Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal have teamed up for their first podcast, Pie. People. Influences. Experiences. The program will start April 2, available on all podcast players and YouTube.
They describe Pie as an intimate parlor conversation exploring the ingredients that “baked up” each guest. It is a respectful, deep dive into nature and nurture — family, faith, friends, hometowns, schooling, mentors, tormentors, etc. It will be the heart-to-heart chat that gives us some authentic insight into each guest’s personal and professional choices — in the arts, athletics, healthcare, politics, etc.
I can testify that between them, this couple can cover a healthy span of topics. A few years back, I convinced Sutter to co-live blog the Emmys for Deadline. Only when I arrived at their home did I learn that Kurt had been so busy as the writer, director and producer of my fave FX series Sons of Anarchy, that...

You haven't seen the "Pitch Perfect" movies? A-ca-scuse me? That's a reference you'll get when you finally sit down to watch the 2012 comedy set in the world of competitive college a cappella. For the uninitiated, that means making music without the assistance of instruments. It all comes from their mouths!
Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick ("Up in the Air") stars in "Pitch Perfect" as Beca Mitchell, an aspiring DJ who has reluctantly enrolled at Barden University, where her father works as a professor and desperately pushes her to venture out of her comfort zone and actually have what he considers a meaningful college experience. If she still hates it, then he'll let her go to California to follow her DJ dreams.
While at Barden, Beca ends up being recruited by the Barden Bellas, the university's all-female a cappella group led by Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp) and Chloe Beale (Brittany Snow), which...

While we wait for MaXXXine, the final film in director Ti West’s trilogy that kicked off with X and continued with Pearl, we’ve learned that X is headed to Netflix next month.
See where the story of Maxine and Pearl began when X hits Netflix on February 1.
From A24 and director Ti West, 2022’s X stars Mia Goth (A Cure for Wellness, Suspiria, Emma), Brittany Snow (Prom Night, Pitch Perfect, Pitch Perfect 2), Jenna Ortega (“You,” 2022’s Scream, The Babysitter: Killer Queen), and Grammy Award® nominee Scott Mescudi (better known as Kid Cudi, Don’t Look Up).

Matt Damon has worked with a lot of young actors, but he walked away with a strong impression of his True Grit co-star. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was she was going to be a big star in Marvel.

Damon starred in the Coen Brothers movie True Grit with an ensemble cast. He found himself working alongside the likes of Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jeff Bridges in the 2010 drama. But he found his co-star Hailee Steinfeld just as impressive as the veterans he worked with. Especially given how young she was at the time.
“She’s quite extraordinary in general. She’s 13-years-old and I wouldn’t believe that a 13-year-old would really be capable of this type of performance. It’s a really tough...

A first-round exit by the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup playoffs last season was a disappointing result for a team with so much skill, speed, and a cup win just the season before. But injuries played a significant role in their underperformance, and if the team stays healthy in the 2023-24 NHL season, look for them to go on a deep playoff run.
They have some of the best offensive talent in the NHL, led by Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and defenseman Cale Makar. Even without their captain, Gabriel Landeskog, who is recovering from another knee surgery and will miss the entire 23-24 campaign, they have the top-heavy talent to beat teams. Their defense is also world-class, with a top pairing of Makar and Devon Toews. And in goal, they have Alexandar Georgiev who finished last season with a very solid .919 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average, while racking up 40 wins.

Watch out, Jigsaw — “Terrifier 3” is arriving next year just in time for the holidays.
Which holiday, you ask? Well, Oct. 25, 2024, makes “Terrifier 3” a Halloween treat, so while the film takes place over Christmas, a “The Nightmare Before Christmas”-esque holiday crossover is in store.
Regardless, Art the Clown will return, courtesy of Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting, and unleash yet more unrated carnage on the unsuspecting townsfolk of Miles County on Christmas Eve.
The latest Damien Leone-directed installment will open two years after “Terrifier 2” took theaters by storm. The family-unfriendly slasher, filled with ultraviolence and running a whopping 138 minutes, played in wide theatrical release, legging out for a month after an $805,000 opening weekend (in 770 theaters) toward an $11 million domestic cumulative. Its weekend performance would peak over Halloween weekend with $1.9 million in 1,550 theaters.
That was a higher total than the 2022 Oscar season likes of “Tar,” “She Said” and “The Banshees of Inisherin.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Peacock has reversed course and canceled the second season of its Pitch Perfect TV spinoff Bumper in Berlin, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The renewal was first announced back in January, after the show’s first six-episode season debuted on Nov. 23, 2022. At the time of the renewal, NBCU said Bumper in Berlin was the streamer’s top comedy series to date, but has not released any viewing data.
The cancellation comes amid Hollywood’s dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and marks yet another series, alongside the canceled second seasons of Prime Video’s The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, to have the plug pulled during the work stoppage. At the time, A League of Their Own co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson criticized Prime Video’s decision, writing that “to blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly.”

Elizabeth Banks is open to making a Cocaine Bear sequel.
In a conversation with Rolling Stone, the director and actress shared that she had a great time working on the film, which follows a 500-pound black bear after it consumes a significant amount of cocaine and embarks on a drug-fueled rampage in a Georgia forest.
“I loved how subversive, crazy, silly and funny it was,” she said. “I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. We had a lot [of] fun, and if I got the opportunity to surprise the audience and delight myself again, I would take it.”
Banks shared that she hoped that directing the film would show that she can helm big, fun, bloody genre pictures in addition to things like Pitch Perfect 2 and Charlie’s Angels. Her diverse directing interests resemble her acting career.

Elizabeth Banks is three features into her career as a director, and she has already proven that she can deliver crowd pleasing work in a wide variety of genres. After the success of “Pitch Perfect 2,” she ventured into action filmmaking with her Kristen Stewart-led “Charlie’s Angels” reboot before pivoting to horror comedy with the inimitable “Cocaine Bear.” And she’d prefer not to have her blockbuster filmmaking overshadowed by discussions of gender.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Banks looked back on the disappointing box office performance of “Charlie’s Angels.” (The film grossed $73.3 million worldwide against a $55 million budget.) She lamented the fact that the film was billed as an ideologically-driven movie about feminism when she simply set out to make a crowd pleasing blockbuster.
“For me, regardless of what the actual product was, so much of the story that the media wanted to tell about ‘Charlie...

“I think it’s cyclical,” offers Elizabeth Banks. “Everything has its moment, goes away, and comes back.”
The wildly prolific actress, who’s appeared in everything from Wet Hot American Summer and the original Spider-Man films to The 40-Year-Old Virgin and The Hunger Games franchise, is talking about the YA craze she found herself smack in the middle of about a decade ago, when horny tween vampires and a bow-wielding female revolutionary dominated the zeitgeist.
Toy fads don’t seem so cyclical. Their appeal is as mercurial as the children who covet them.

The new trailer for Universal’s romantic comedy “The List” teases Halston Sage and Christian Navarro finding love in a hopeless place – Los Angeles.
Abby (Sage) wasn’t expecting to add Jake (Navarro) to her dating itinerary, but after a rough breakup leads to her building a list of celebrity “free passes” and traveling to Los Angeles to court the rich and famous, his ambition and charm catches her off guard and flips her expectations of love on their head.
The romcom charts Abby’s personal reinvention when her fiancé cheats on her and sleeps with a celebrity on his “free pass” list. She and her best friend Chloe (Chrissie Fit) then come up with Abby’s own celebrity list of men to sleep with. But while tracking down a leading Hollywood man type, a waiter named Jake has her rethinking exactly what she’s looking for in a partner.

The news never stops, but for Jake Tapper, it does occasionally share time with other creative pursuits.
Today, what’s lured him away from the CNN studio (temporarily) is the promotion of his new book. He’s seated on the patio of The Pendry, a West Hollywood social club meets hotel, drinking the first of several iced coffees, dressed casually — comparatively speaking, for a person whose day job requires suits pressed within an inch of their life — in a breezy button-down shirt and Air Jordans. He arrived early for the breakfast interview, due in part to the habits of a longtime live news anchor, but also because he’s on East Coast time, rising hours before most of Los Angeles.
Tapper is releasing a third novel in his budding literary empire, which began with 2018’s The Hellfire Club, a political thriller that followed young Congressman Charlie Marder, and his wife,...

“Wicked Part Two” has been moved up a month, with the second and final chapter of Jon. M Chu’s stage adaptation opening not over Christmas Day 2025 but instead Thanksgiving weekend 2025. Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, Universal’s musical fantasy will drop on November 26, 2025. Why the date change? Well, would you want to open against “Avatar 3 if you don’t have to”?
This is the first bit of musical chairs to come after the Walt Disney Company announced a slew of new dates last week, including moving “Avatar 3” back a year to December 2025, moving the next two “Avengers” films each back a year to May 2026 and 2027 and slotting two “Star Wars” films for May 2026 and December 2026. Most of the dates were far enough into the future to not have named-and-dated titles impacted.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is well on its way to becoming the biggest box office hit ever for Sony Pictures Animation, and while the usual factors for a hit film like strong audience buzz and a smart release date are major reasons why, the years of play that its predecessor “Into the Spider-Verse” had on Netflix was a major factor as well.
“Having an in-house streaming service has plenty of its own opportunities for profit, but as we’ve seen over the last few years, it also has its own challenges,” Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “Sony has shown that partnering with an established streamer instead can be a viable strategy as well, allowing the studio to find an alternate way to take advantage of the big-to-small screen synergy.”

Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is off and swinging at the box office, grossing a massive $17.4 million from 3,500 theaters.
That total is well above the $3.5 million that this sequel’s 2018 Oscar-winning predecessor “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” earned from Thursday previews en route to a mid-December $35 million opening. “Across the Spider-Verse” was projected to earn more than double that with tracking at an $80 million-plus launch, with rival distributors projecting an opening of over $90 million.
With this sky-high preview result, the second-biggest ever for an animated film behind “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million toward a $183 million opening weekend) in 2018, Sony should be looking at a $100 million-plus opening, possibly above $125 million considering the strong reviews, likely-to-be-strong buzz and goodwill from the previous Mile Morales flick.

After the release of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," it's never been more clear that these movies have essentially been one long love story ... just maybe not between the two characters we thought all along. In James Gunn's long-awaited threequel, Chris Pratt's Peter Quill is struggling mightily to come to terms with the fact that this post-"Avengers: Endgame" version of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) isn't the same one Peter shared all those sweet (and feisty) memories with throughout the previous "Guardians" films. Killed at the hands of the Mad Titan Thanos and more or less replaced by an alternate universe version from an earlier point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, Quill means absolutely nothing to her. There's a funny moment when Star-Lord desperately recounts just what made him so attracted to the old Gamora in the first place, and Gamora retorts that his description sounds much more like her sister,...

Lionsgate has officially noted that the four “John Wick” films have topped $1 billion at the global box office. Its new cume, $1.011 billion in all, comes from a combined production budget of just $245 million, for a 4.12 times rate of return just through theatrical revenue. It again shows the value of at least trying to create new or outright original IP amid a sea of revamps and revivals.
That total gross includes $87.8 million for “John Wick” in 2014, $171.5 million for “John Wick: Chapter 2” in 2017 (plus 97% from “John Wick”), $326.7 million for “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” in 2019 (plus 90%) and a running total of $425.3 million for “John Wick: Chapter 4” (plus 30%) which opened in late March of this year.

When James Gunn’s third and final adventure with Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and the rest of the gang hit cinemas last weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opened to a respectable if unspectacular $118.4 million across three days in the U.S. This was a healthy number, but one noticeably down from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which opened at $146.5 million in 2017. Hence early concern within the industry (and among ourselves) about what this could mean for Marvel and the superhero genre as a whole.
Opening weekends dropping by nearly 20 percent between installments is never something that growth-obsessed boardrooms and shareholders want to see. And, indeed, that drop still seems to suggest there is some kind of minor exhaustion with the superhero genre, which has had a very rough past nine months: DC’s Black Adam in October and March’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods both flopped...

Marvel must be letting out a pretty big sigh of relief right now. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" not only had a great opening weekend, but it had one of the best holds ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film in its second weekend. Whereas other recent MCU films such as "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," "Thor: Love and Thunder," and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" (more on that in a moment) fell off a cliff in weekend two, the finale to the "Guardians" trilogy is proving to be a crowd-pleaser with real staying power. Unfortunately, the weekend's new releases didn't fare particularly well, but we'll get to that.
Per The Numbers, director James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" earned $60.5 million in its second weekend, easily taking the top spot ahead of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($13 million). Meanwhile, that film crossed $1.2 billion worldwide,...

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" finally hit theaters this past weekend, marking the end of a very long journey for director James Gunn. This movie was originally supposed to come out much earlier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, but Gunn took an unplanned break to make "The Suicide Squad" instead after temporarily being fired from the film. In any event, the sequel wraps up his trilogy and did so with a bang at the box office. It was precisely the bang that Marvel and Disney needed following the disappointment that "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" ended up being.
The latest entry in the MCU earned $118.4 million domestically, which was pretty close to in line with expectations (which had it taking in $120 million). Internationally though, "Guardians 3" did stellar business, taking in $170.9 million (per The Numbers), which was far better than expected. The film opened in 52 territories, including China.
