Exclusive: Former BBC Studios scripted chiefs Hilary Salmon, Radford Neville and Nick Betts set up their new production venture The Lighthouse in October last year, boasting a shared roll call of credits that includes Luther, Doctor Who, War And Peace and Emmy-winning The Night Of.
But even with this greatest hits list, securing all-important backing for their new venture during a catastrophic social and economic crisis gave rise to some nervy moments. It’s why the trio were “hugely” relieved to get Sky Studios’ investment over the line this week at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Youth-skewing British broadcaster E4 has struck a first-look development deal with the production team behind YouTube channel Wall of Comedy and stars of hit teen drama Youngers.
It has inked the overall del with Percelle Ascott and Joivan Wade, who run Wall of Production with Tafara Makopa. The deal will see the company develop a raft of scripted and non-scripted projects at the Channel 4-backed network as it looks to bolster its programming for younger audiences.
The deal is unusual in the UK as overall development deals with broadcasters are few and far between.
The pair star and co-produce online drama Shiro’s Story and they starred in Youngers, which aired on E4. Ascott is also the lead in Netflix series The Innocents, whilst Wade is the lead in Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ series Doom Patrol.

Charlotte Hope (Game of Thrones) has been tapped to star in Starz’s The Spanish Princess, the third installment following The White Princess and The White Queen, based on Philippa Gregory’s bestselling books. Starz also rounded out the cast as production begins on the limited series.
The Spanish Princess, from All3 Media’s New Pictures and Playground, the latest chapter in the dynastic saga of Tudor England, is described as a powerful, epic story that not only returns the audience to the world of royal court intrigue as seen uniquely through the perspective of the women, but also sheds light on a previously untold corner of history – the lives of people of color, living and working in 16th century London.
Hope has been cast in the titular role as Catherine of Aragon, alongside Stephanie Levi-John as her lady-in-waiting and confidante, Lina de Cardonnes.

In Jovian Wade, Dee Kartier and Percelle Ascott’s scampish feature debut, three London friends foolishly spend £100,000 of accidentally gotten gains
If Adam Deacon’s Anuvahood was the Carry On of Brit urban comedy, then perhaps The Weekend is the On the Buses: likable, freewheeling, a bit ropey. Jovian Wade, Dee Kartier and Percelle Ascott have already shown tag-team charisma on their Mandem on the Wall YouTube channel and E4’s Youngers, and they easily carry it over to their feature debut as a trio of London friends who accidentally lay their hands on £100,000 of gangster readies and foolishly decide to spend it. As well as scampishly running rings around the grim fatalism of Noel Clarke’s ’hood trilogy, The Weekend atypically makes Wade’s lead a nice middle-class boy. Directed by fellow debutant Sheridan De Myers, the caper takes too long to get going and is thinly sustained...

When Daisy Ridley was cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, most people asked the same question: "Who?" That was followed by another logical question: "How did that happen?" Before the initial cast announcement was made in late April 2014 (see photo below; Ridley is sitting between Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in the upper right), her screen appearances were quite limited. After completing her education at a school for the performing arts, she landed a guest appearance on the British television show Youngers in 2013 and then quickly began popping up in other TV shows as well. Still, when Ridley auditioned for the seventh installment of the Star Wars series, a process that took seven months (watch video above), she could properly be...

For now, Daisy Ridley isn't exactly a household name, but she will soon be inextricably linked to one of the biggest film franchises of all-time. The actress, who recently signed with UTA after a major bidding war amongst agencies, was previously announced as the female lead in the J.J Abrams-directed "Star Wars: Episode VII," and now it looks like she will star in the second and third parts of the new trilogy as well. Although nothing is confirmed, rumors are circulating that Ridley's character will be the daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa -- played by "Star Wars" vets Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher -- and that she'll be the trilogy's lead heroine. Abrams is currently shooting "Episode VII," while Rian Johnson ("Looper") is developing "VIII" and "IX," and will reportedly direct both films, according to Deadline. Ridley is a relative unknown, having only appeared in a handful...

Daisy Ridley will make her feature debut in "Star Wars: Episode VII," but the relatively unknown actress won't remain that way for long, if a new report is to be believed.
Deadline writes that Ridley was just the subject of a major bidding war between creative talent agencies, and that's because she's not just another pretty face in the "Episode VII" ensemble -- she's rumored to be the female lead, and her role is reportedly set to stretch through episodes "VIII" and "IX" of the series's new trilogy. HitFix adds that Ridley is rumored to be playing the daughter of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher).
There's been no confirmation about Ridley's character from Disney, though the agency bidding war suggests that the rumor that she'll stick around the franchise for several films is solid. "Episode VIII" is set to be written and directed by "Looper" helmer Rian Johnson,...

The cast of Star Wars: Episode VII was announced on Tuesday, and, while many of the new castmembers are somewhat unknowns, one in particular is a complete mystery: Daisy Ridley.
Ridley is the only new female cast member and one of only two women included in the entire announcement. She joins Carrie Fisher who will be returning to the Star Wars franchise and reprising her role as Princess Leia. (It’s worth noting that Fisher is credited as playing a ‘Leia Solo’ on IMDb.) However, the film is reportedly still looking to cast another actress to join the film in a “substantial role."
Very little is known about Ridley, a British actress who has only been acting professionally for roughly one year. Her credits, of which there are few, include one-episode guest spots in various English television series, including Casualty, Youngers, Toast of London, and a two episode run in Silent Witness.

Two young British actors are set to join the cast of Disney and Lucas Film's Star Wars: Episode VII
Relative newcomer, 22 year old Daisy Ridley (represented by Jonathan Arun) from London has landed a yet-undisclosed part, but it seems likely to be the daughter of Hans Solo and Princess Leia, for which open auditions were held.
Daisy was cast as Jessie in Youngers for Big Talk Productions in 2012. She then played a guest lead role in BBC TV series Casualty followed by small roles in Toast of London, Mr Selfridge and Silent Witness. She will make her feature film debut playing Alicia in the second Inbetweeners movie "The Long Goodbye" which will open in UK cinemas this August.
John Boyega, star of “Attack the Block” and who recently wrapped a recurring role on the Fox series “24: Live Another Day.” will play a Jedi, according to Variety.

Who is Daisy Ridley, aside from being the only other woman currently listed as a cast member on "Star Wars: Episode VII"?
Carrie Fisher is returning to reprise her role as Princess Leia, which makes Ridley the only female newcomer so far. Whether or not she snagged the part of Ben Kenobi's bad-ass Jedi descendant isn't clear, but so far that's the only female character we've heard about. That's the role that also-unknown Maisie Richardson-Sellers was in the running for, but she didn't make the final list of cast members.
Ridley only started acting last year, beginning with guest roles on British TV shows like "Youngers" and "Mr Selfridge." There's so little information on the newcomer that we've been forced to dig up her agent's website to get some details. So far, there's not a lot. She's set to appear in the sequel to "The Inbetweeners," a movie based on the Channel 4 sitcom.

ITV has bought Big Talk - the production company behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
The broadcaster acquired 100% of the firm, which also makes Channel 4's Friday Night Dinner and ITV's The Job Lot, for an initial payment of £12.5 million.
Additional payments will be made based on Big Talk's financial performance over the next five years.
ITV said the acquisition is an "important step forward" in its strategy of building a strong international content business.
In the past year, ITV has bought Graham Norton's So Television and 24 Hours in A&E producer The Garden, as well as several Us-based production companies.
Big Talk Productions was founded in 1995 by Nira Park, who holds a joint 65% stake with chief executive Kenton Allen. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright will each receive just over £150,000 from the sale as part of a group of investors that owns 10%.
