Tom Johnson, who received two Emmy Awards for his writing on The Daily Show, has died. He was 55.
Johnson died “peacefully and unexpectedly” at his Los Angeles home on Jan. 14 of a cardiac issue, his wife, actress Rozie Bacchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He never got to eat the Texas toast he was making, or the 4 lbs. of crab legs he found on sale and crammed in the freezer two nights prior,” she said in a statement.
“Tom had such a big heart and cared deeply about taking care of others. His work ethic was impeccable. He was fair, kind, talented, inclusive and funny as hell.”
Born on July 25, 1968, in Fairfax, Virginia, Johnson began his career after college and founded the Network Comedy Troupe. He also toured as a comedian and performed at venues across the country and on television.

Anthony Jeselink won’t be saying Offensive things every week on Comedy Central anymore. The network confirmed today that it would not renew The Jeselnik Offensive for a third season.
The series — which showcased the edgy stand-up riffing on topical (and taboo) issues before leading a panel of fellow comedians — debuted in February of this year and finished its final season in late August. On Saturday at the New York Comedy Festival, which represented the last stop of his Comedy Central-sponsored stand-up tour, Jeselink told the crowd that the show was canceled.

As my Televerse cohost Simon Howell and I discussed in our Top 10 TV Series of 2013 (So Far), this has been a spectacular year for television, with many shows delivering remarkably consistent seasons (or half-seasons) of memorable, moving television. A number of series were in contention for our Top 10 but didn’t quite make the cut, often because they lacked the week-in, week-out consistency of our final picks. Here is our list of the Best of the Rest, the standout episodes of 2013 from shows that didn’t make our Top 10. With so many choices, and because we’ve seen and are drawing from different series, Simon and I are offering more personalized picks here. As with our Top 10, the list is alphabetical. –Kate Kulzick

Surprise! Comedy Central has renewed the sweet sketch comedy, Inside Amy Schumer for a second season.
The show is still a relatively new one, having just launched this year in April. Schumer herself and Daniel Powell are the show’s executive producers and if you’re not sure what the sketch comedy is all about, you can still watch the very first episode, titled “Bad Decisions” on the Comedy Central website.
The great news of a second season renewal came when the comedian made the announcement herself on Monday via Twitter.
“Hey! #InsideAmy Schumer got picked up for Season 2! Thanks @ComedyCentral New episode tomorrow at 10:30/9:30 Central,” she wrote.
The Viacom-owned, funny, cable network, Comedy Central also confirmed the news. The show made for Comedy Central’s top premiere of 2013! The best news? The premier really drew in male viewers. Following a new episode of Tosh.0, Inside Amy opened to 1.6 million total viewers.

Inside Amy Schumer scored the biggest debut of any 2013 show for Comedy Central, so the network didn’t even wait until halfway through its debut season to give Schumer and her staff some more good news. Per Schumer’s Twitter account, Comedy Central has renewed the show for a second 10-episode season, to debut in 2014. It will hang around with fellow sketch series Kroll Show and Key & Peele, and joins other recently renewed freshmen shows The Jeselnik Offensive and Nathan For You. That leaves The Ben Show as the only new series to not receive a second season ...

Comedy Central’s newest original show has scored big in the ratings.
Inside Amy Schumer, the latest original programming on the comedy channel, premiered as the number one entertainment series on cable in its time slot with 1.6 million total viewers.
The show rated especially well with young male viewers, earning a 2.4 rating among men 18 to 34, despite being largely about the situations that girls find themselves in on a day-to-day basis. Our own review will tell you that Schumer is an actual Girl’s Girl, not a Cool Girl as so many comediennes try to be, and that seems to have struck a chord with audiences.

Comedy Central‘s latest original series, Inside Amy Schumer, debuted last night to 1.6 million total viewers and 1.2 million Adults 18-49 (1.1 rating) and a 2.4 rating among Men 18-34. The show starring comedian Amy Schumer who, through a series of scripted vignettes, stand-up comedy, and man-on-the-street interviews, explores topics revolving around sex and relationships, benefited from a strong lead-in from Tosh.0 (2.4 million, 1.6 in 18-49). For its three premiere night plays, Inside Amy Schumer averaged 3 million viewers and was streamed nearly 250,000 times prior to the premiere. According to Comedy Central, Inside Amy Schumer logged the best new series premiere on the network this year across all key demographics. This story first appeared in the May 10 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Spend time with Kent Alterman, and one can forget that he is not a comedian who appears on Comedy Central shows but rather the executive who programs them. And in a bid to stay at once competitive and differentiated in an increasingly fractured comedy landscape -- on TV and online -- Alterman, 56, is lining his male-skewing network with significantly more originals than ever before, including new offerings from Anthony Jeselnik (The Jeselnik Offensive), Nathan Fielder (Nathan for You), Ben Hoffman (The Ben Show) and Amy Schumer (Inside

Comedy Central has renewed The Jeselnik Offensive and Nathan for You for second seasons, the network announced today. Jeselnik is around twice as popular as Nathan, but the latter is a weirder, more interesting show. Jeselnik will be back in July, but we'll have to wait until 2014 for more of the bizarre joys of Nathan for You. The pig and a goat, you guys!

A pair of comedians on Comedy Central just got a pick-me-up: The network announced today that both Anthony Jeselnik’s The Jeselnik Offensive and Nathan Fielder’s Nathan for You have been renewed for a second season.
The Jeselnik Offensive, which features the fearless stand-up leaving no topic unskewered through various segments such as a panel discussion with fellow comedians, will return with ten new episodes in July. Nathan for You — a reality series in which Fielder “helps” small businesses in clever and unconventional ways — also received a 10-episode order, and its second season will debut in 2014.

Comedy Central is enjoying quite the string of success with their original programming, with returning shows like Key & Peele, Kroll Show, and Workaholics continuing on to fill the void of no more Futurama. Along with those programs, The Jeselnik Offensive has proven it has that red carpet razzmatazz, and the almost-documentary series Nathan For You has provided lots of worthy cringe-comedy, so it was only a matter of time until the official announcement: Comedy Central has renewed both shows for a second season. Jeselnik Offensive, executive produced by Anthony Jeselnik, head writer Tom Johnson, Krysia Plonka and Mosaic’s Christie Smith, is slated to begin in July. Nathan, executive produced by Fielder, Michael Koman and Dave Kneebone, will return in 2014. The Jeselnik Offensive, which premiered in February, features Jeselnik’s take on news ripped from the headlines of Gawker, Reddit and the places we troll for the darker, more shocking and lurid stories. The docu-reality comedy Nathan For You, which also premiered in February, features Nathan Fielder as he uses his real-life business degree and prior real-life experiences to help struggling companies with strategies that no traditional business consultant would dare to attempt.
