The recent critical acclaim for HBO’s The Last of Us and the box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie have sparked a wave of optimism. Could this be a turning point for video game adaptations?

For decades, such adaptations have struggled to capture the essence of beloved games and translate them effectively to the cinematic medium. Despite Hollywood’s persistent efforts to turn popular video game characters into cinematic heroes, the vast majority of these adaptations have fallen flat.

Seven years have gone by since John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski signed on to direct a reboot of the 1986 classic Highlander (watch it Here), and the filmmaker has been focused on making John Wick sequels while developing the new Highlander. But now John Wick seems to be taking a little break, so it looks like Stahelski might finally have some time to bring sword-wielding immortals back to the screen. Deadline reports that Lionsgate will be presenting Stahelski’s Highlander project to potential buyers at the upcoming American Film Market, looking for partners that will help them recoup the film’s budget, which is said to be over $100 million.
Two years have passed since Henry Cavill of Man of Steel and The Witcher signed on to star in the film, and Cavill remains attached to the project.

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”
On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”
Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.
Check out the “Tiny Beautiful Things” trailer:
Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Through multiple timelines, the series explores all the traumatic ripples the mystery created for countless people. The series will star Alycia Debnam-Carey,...

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

“Anatomy of a Scandal” star Rupert Friend has signed on to star as famed Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache in “The Yellow Tie,” an upcoming biopic of Celibidache’s life, Variety can exclusively reveal.
Friend will have a central role in the feature, playing the young Celibidache. As Variety revealed last year, John Malkovich is also signed on to play an older version of the conductor.
The duo last appeared on screen together in 2004’s “The Libertine,” in which Johnny Depp also starred as the Duke of Rochester. Friend has also appeared in features including “Hitman: Agent 47” and “The Death of Stalin.” He will next be appearing in “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.
Serge Ioan Celebidachi, the conductor’s son, will direct “The Yellow Tie” based on a screenplay he co-wrote with James Olivier.
Robert W. Cort has also boarded the biopic as an executive producer.

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Set in the very near future where scientists have discovered a method of matching people with their perfect romantic fit using DNA, eight-part Netflix Original The One is technically a sci-fi drama. Really though, it’s a crime thriller revolving around the murky circumstances in which the cash cow company behind the matching service was created. Written by Misfits and Crazyhead creator Howard Overman, The One is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by John Marrs. It’s a cat-and-mouse game between wealthy, driven CEO Rebecca (Hannah Ware) and police detective Kate (Zoë Tapper).

As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s Ok.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, as the various streaming services are stocking their libraries with some great new titles this December to keep us going through the festive period. When it comes to Hulu, the Disney-owned platform is adding a few holiday-related movies and TV shows, but is mostly taking the track of stuffing itself full of classic films that the whole family can enjoy.
This includes a bunch of the best James Bond pics ever made, like GoldenEye, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and, the one that kicked it all off, Dr. No. That would be a perfect watch to honor Sean Connery, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Other action movies you might want to check out this December, meanwhile, include The Hurt Locker, The Fifth Element, 2003’s Hulk and the two “Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon” flicks, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

As Singapore’s stature continues to grow in the entertainment world, and with international producers forever on the lookout for exotic but affordable locations, the Asian country is once again in global sights as a major production hub.
Singapore’s distinctive topography of cityscapes and countryside, coupled with its unique cultural blend of East and West, has led some to consider it the ideal Asian environment — especially given the unsettled recent politics of mainland China, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Manila.
“The concept of ‘hubbing’ is a natural fit for Singapore, given the country’s post-independence history and livelihood as an international trading center and the multicultural, multilingual nature of its workforce,” says Kenneth Tan, head of the Singapore Film Society.
Indeed, the international success of “Crazy Rich Asians” last year, alongside the Singaporean government’s various initiatives promising subsidies to major productions, has caused a spike in interest over the past few years.

Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con presentation on Saturday wasn’t just a celebration of the success of “Avengers: Endgame” and a map of the company’s upcoming film slate — it was also a clear demonstration of a more diverse future for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and perhaps Hollywood overall.
It’s not entirely accurate to say that the previous waves of Marvel films were led by three white guys named Chris. But it’s true that despite the growing diversity of casting, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has so far had mostly white and male stars in the title roles.
But as fans saw on Saturday in Hall H, the post-“Endgame” Marvel is a very different animal. Kicking off next May with the standalone “Black Widow” film starring Scarlett Johansson. Sony’s English-language remake of the 2011 Gerardo Naranjo movie Miss Bala began previews Thursday night grossing $650,000 at 2,050 theaters in what is expected to be a low and slow Super Bowl weekend at the box office.
Miss Bala is the only wide release this weekend, expected to draw $7M-$10M in a frame where Universal/Bvi/Blumhouse’s Glass in its third weekend is expected to excel with $11.3M. Through yesterday, the M. Night Shyamalan pic counts $79.1M through two weeks, running 6% behind the director’s Split from two years ago.
While business will drop anywhere from 60%-75% from Saturday to Super Bowl Sunday for most non-family movies, the weekend has improved significantly for male-oriented pics like 2009’s Taken ($24.7M) or American Sniper, which in 2015 made $30.6M over the Big Game weekend, the pic’s sixth frame. People do go to the movies over Super Bowl weekend, and plan their moviegoing on Friday or Saturday.

Singapore’s history as a filming location might not ever rival Tokyo or Hong Kong, but things are starting to look up: “Crazy Rich Asians,” the upcoming Hollywood adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s locally set novel, has already been touted as the biggest film to ever spotlight the metropolis.
The Warner Bros. release starring Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh joins other noteworthy international movies that have filmed in Singapore since its founding as a republic in 1965.
Possibly the biggest pre-millennium title was “Saint Jack” (1979), Peter Bogdanovich’s down-and-dirty adaptation of Paul Theroux’s novel, which was partly based on the author’s own experiences in Singapore. It was filmed illicitly and without the government’s knowledge, long before the city cleaned up its prostitution scene, with salacious bits shot around Bugis Street.
Singapore subsequently banned the film until 2006, and few Hollywood movies attempted to risk the country’s wrath in the following decades.

It may not have the same international cachet as rival Asian countries such as South Korea or Japan, but Singapore’s film scene is growing in stature.
Credit for this can go in part to the Singapore Film Commission (Sfc), celebrating its 20th year in operation. Founded in 1998 with an aim to nurture Singaporean filmmaking talent, it has offered support, grants and promotion to more than 600 projects over the years, including feature films, shorts, scripts and events. The Sfc’s relevance and endurance stand as a testament to the staying power of the country’s film scene.
“Ultimately, we recognize that the heart of all good films and media content lies in its storytelling,” says Joachim Ng, director of the Sfc. “The stories told through films or any other medium must resonate with its audiences.”

If anything is to be said about the original Alien flick, it’s that not only was it a crowning achievement in cinema for its era, but it also went on to spawn one of the greatest film franchises of all-time. Really, this series fearlessly blurred the lines separating the horror and science fiction genres, with its influence being felt on countless movies and video games to this day. And if you don’t believe me regarding the latter, go back and play some of the classic Resident Evil titles, for many paid tribute to various scenes witnessed in Alien pictures.
Of course, we know one of the key factors involved in any movie’s success is that of an effective trailer, and that’s something that definitely sold tickets to showings of Alien back in 1979. Actually, it could be said it was what they didn’t show you that sparked so much interest,...

Hitman, showcasing the signature shaved head, barcode tattoo, slick suits and dual pistols of anti-hero Agent 47, has been a monumental multimedia presence since its 2000 video game debut, spawning several sequels and even two film adaptations. However, the franchise will soon make its deadly mark in new territory, with Hulu’s plans for a television series adaptation.

Despite unfortunately having his future in the video game world from which he originated in limbo, it turns out that us fans of Agent 47 actually have something to look forward to in the not too distant future. We say that because, believe it or not, our favorite bald contract killer is slated to carry out his next mission via a new Hitman series set to debut on a popular streaming service.
Now, you can say all you want about his silver screen outings – Hitman and Hitman: Agent 47 – but I enjoyed them both to varying degrees. Granted, they both kind of missed the mark when it came to the whole “Silent Assassin” motif, instead offering up someone who’d likely get a “Serial Killer” rating upon mission completion, but I firmly believe those flicks were much closer to the spirit of their respective source material than, say, the Resident Evil movies.

The Max Payne movie failed to capture the essence of the videogame - but a new fan film is having a go...
The original Max Payne videogame feels like the result of its developers spending a weekend bingeing on The Matrix and various John Woo movies, while taking the occasional break to read some Raymond Chandler novels. It was a stylish, fluid third-person shooter that made heavy use of slow motion and bullet time, with the story being told through graphic novel panels. Max himself was an insanely cool lead character, and the game went on to become a major hit. It spawned two further games – released in 2003 and 2011 respectively – and remains a cult favourite to this day.
It also spawned – like pretty much every successful video game – a movie adaptation in 2008. Mark Wahlberg took on the title role, with Mila Kunis playing Max’s love interest Mona. While the movie made a modest profit it did little to impress critics, with the harshest judgements coming from the fan base itself.
The movie is essentially forgotten now and is on the same video game movie scrapheap that also houses Hitman: Agent 47 and Tekken. On the flipside of the coin is Max Payne: Retribution, a 2017 fan produced short that manages to recreate the unique feel of the game for a fraction of the cost. For the sake of an experiment let’s contrast the two adaptations, and see if passion and creativity are any match for a Hollywood budget and a major star.
Max Payne: Retribution (2017)
This short doesn’t adapt any particular storyline from the series, and instead feels like a mash-up between the original game and its sequel. The story involves Max – still eternally grieving for his murdered family – trying to save Mona Sax from Jack Lupino (played by director Leroy Kincaide), a drug kingpin with a nasty Devil worshipping hobby. It’s a contained story that gradually builds to an epic gunfight in a drug warehouse.
Fan films are often well-meaning and filled with passion, but are let down by a lack of budget, acting talent or filmmaking ability. It’s one thing to get actors and dressed them up like video game characters, but it’s another thing entirely to breathe life into it. Thankfully Max Payne: Retribution manages to bypass a lot of those potential pitfalls, coming across as a sincere tribute to the franchise.
A love for the material is evident in every frame, from the countless Easter eggs (Max drinking Kong whisky, Address Unknown playing on the television etc) to the faithful recreation of the main characters. Actor Joan James Muixi certainly has the look of old school Max and does a good job with the stylised dialogue. Sadly he lacks the gruff authority of original voice actor James McCaffrey, but then again replicating McCaffrey’s distinct sound is near impossible anyway.
The attention to detail of the short is impressive, especially given Retribution’s modest £1500 budget. The budgetary stretch marks are visible in certain sets or effect shots, but what the crew was able to achieve on that amount is impressive. It has a slick cinematic look, from a moody early scene of Max washing his face while bathed in neon to the warehouse finale. This sequence manages to cram in all the classic elements of the game too; slo-mo, duel wielding and even a spot of bullet time, and it’s a nicely choreographed shootout.
Like many fan films it’s not flawless. Some line readings feel off and a few scenes play out a little long, but Retribution remains a stylish ode that understands what made the series so interesting in the first place. That, and the moment Max picks up another handgun and prepares to dive, should be enough to produce a smirk in even the most jaded fan.
Max Payne (2008)
There are certain characters and franchises that are fundamentally aimed at adults, and trying to tone them down for a lower rating usually ends in disaster; think Live Free Or Die Hard or Alien Vs Predator. Max Payne is a game defined by a high bodycount and bloodshed, so the decision to make it a PG-13 movie was already a sign it was walking down the wrong path.
Before I start beating the film with a stick, let’s start with some positives. The film looks gorgeous, making the snowy New York where the story is set look like a beautiful wasteland. Director John Moore may not be a master storyteller but he’s got a great eye, and clearly had a blast shooting this neo-noir flick. The Valkyrie creatures are an odd inclusion, but they again make for a striking visual, which Moore milks whenever possible. The action scenes – when they arrive – are fun, with Max’s drugged out rampage in the finale injecting the glum thriller with a bit of adrenaline.
That’s pretty much it though, with many of the film's issues running deep. A big one is Mark Wahlberg and his characterization of Max. In the game he may be moody, but he also has a glib sense of humour and his inner monologue made him endearing. Here he’s a mopey, humourless git, and Wahlberg plays him with that singular note throughout. Kunis is completely miscast too, utterly failing to come across as a badass assassin. The rest of the cast are a mixed bag, but nobody here is doing their best work.
The game is almost non-stop action, where the movie is a meandering thriller for the most part. It often feels padded out with useless scenes, like Mona visiting a crime boss who has no bearing on the plot or a bizarre cameo by singer Nelly Furtado. There’s a remarkable lack of action in the first half too, and while it’s not half bad when it arrives, the PG-13 rating sands off the harsher edges.
The video game movie genre has a long history of disappointing fans, and while Max Payne is far from the worst, it was still a major letdown. The pervading feeling is nobody really cared about the material; Wahlberg admitted he didn’t play the game and the movie makes bizarre changes to the source. It doesn’t even feature a scene where Max dives through the air with a Beretta in each hand, which is just about the biggest sin of all.
I remember a friend – who is a big Max Payne fan – summarising it best, “Remember that bit in the game where Max walks around for an hour not shooting anyone? Of course not. That would be boring.”
The Winner: Max Payne: Retribution
It may lack a little spit and polish, but the makers of Max Payne: Retribution took a tiny budget and a lot of passion and funnelled it into a stylish adaptation. Fans should definitely seek it out, and it might help ease the payneful (sorry) gap between games. There’s talk of the makers of Retribution being in discussion with Max Payne publisher Take-Two Interactive about developing a TV series based on the short.
On the evidence shown here, that could be something very fun indeed.
Max Payne: Retribution will be available to view on the official YouTube page from June 24th.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A gripping précis of what Edward Snowden learned at the CIA and Nsa, why he went public, and why it matters. Entertaining yet also deeply unsettling. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Oliver Stone, and of Edward Snowden; love the cast

Snowden opens in June 2013, as journalists Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo: London Has Fallen, The Big Short) and Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto: Star Trek Beyond, Hitman: Agent 47) first meet and interview, over several days, Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt: The Night Before, The Walk), in a hotel in Hong Kong. Today we learned that one my favorite television actors, Dominic West, is joining the cast of the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise. You probably remember him best from The Wire, where he played Jimmy McNulty, the protagonist of the show and a character with many personal and intriguing demons. He stamped his mark on society with this character because The Wire is considered one of the best written shows of all time, and the last time I remember West was in the only decent Punisher movie ever made where he played the iconic Jigsaw.
According to THR, West will be playing Lord Richard Croft, the father of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. This role was originally played by Jon Voight in the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies a decade ago. We know Voight is Jolie's father in "real life," and while West can't claim that over the current...

If there is something new to be said about boxing, Bleed for This doesn’t find it. Sucks all the energy out of a story that should have been a can’t-miss. I’m “biast” (pro): don’t mind a good boxing movie…

If there is something new to be said about boxing in a movie, Bleed for This does not find it. If there is something new to be said about incredible true-life tales of survival, Bleed for This does not find it. Does Our Hero defy the odds? He does. Does he climb his way back to success and make an unlikely comeback that nobody but nobody could ever have imagined? You bet. Does the human spirit triumph? Of course it does.

Adrian Askarieh, producer of Hitman: Agent 47 and the upcoming Jonny Quest film is teaming up with F.J. DeSanto (The Spirit, Doc Savage) to develop adapt and produce adaptations from comics created by writer and graphic designer Tim Daniel.
The slate Askarieh and Desanto will be adapting have yet to come out, but will be released under the Vault Comics indie banner in 2017. The publisher itself was only founded this year, but it prides itself on being bold, new, and creator-owned.
Here is a description of Vault Comics from their official website:
"Creating science fiction and fantasy is, essentially, about imagining and experiencing the new, the bizarre, the unimagined. In the realm of science fiction and fantasy, creators can break the established order, dissolve conceptions of social identity, and give voices to the silenced. They can ask hard questions, and if they are brave, venture bold answers."

Before the return of Dominic Toretto in April, Vin Diesel will be staging a comeback for another of his action heroes in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. No prizes for guessing who.
Hot on the heels of last week’s trailer, which evoked memories of box office flop Hitman: Agent 47 in all the wrong ways, Diesel has now shared a new video from set, taking you behind the scenes of D.J. Caruso’s (I Am Number Four) franchise revival.
Ensuring that Vin Diesel was back in the driving seat naturally proved instrumental in getting the third installment off the ground, particularly after the A-lister remained on the sidelines for the Ice Cube-fronted State of the Union, but Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nsa Agent Augustus Gibbons is also a massive coup.
He’s absent in this set video, however, which instead places newcomer Deepika Padukone front and center.

Played to a similarly remixed version of “Voodoo Child” that accompanied the reveal trailer of Aleksander Bach’s middling Hitman: Agent 47, Paramount has premiered the bat-shit insane new trailer for xXx 3 that heralds The Return of Xander Cage, Vin Diesel’s musclebound adrenaline junkie that clearly hasn’t lost his edges in the intervening years since the cult actioner of 2002.
Tethered with a January release date – often the dumping ground for Hollywood studios – and a fairly generic, run-of-the-mill trailer, it’s difficult to muster any excitement for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, and that’s even factoring in the callbacks to Diesel’s breakout as the rogue agent.
Alas, we’ll reserve full judgement until the turn of the year. The Return of Xander Cage boasts a cast that encompasses Bollywood star Deepika Padukone, Toni Collette, the returning Samuel L. Jackson, Furious 7 co-star Tony Jaa, Conor McGregor,...
