“From the legendary Leiji Matsumoto, along with Jerome Alquie, comes an epic new story! Set within the timeline of the original series, this brand-new Captain Harlock adventure marks the beginning of a new story arc. Planet Earth is threatened by an upcoming invasion by the Sylvidres and despite being banished as a pirate, Captain Harlock won’t give up trying to save the world. This time, the source of danger comes directly from Earth, not outer space. A team of scientists discovers a Sylvidres mausoleum where they find information about terrifying genetic manipulations and a destructive power capable of either providing the Sylvidres with immortality or putting an end to their civilization. The unprecedented cold spell hitting Earth might only be a taste of what this new enemy has in store…” (Ablaze Publishing) *Page Count: 32 Pages | On Sale Date: 6/9/21

Ultraman is getting a new 3D CG anime series and it will be coming to Netflix! According to Anime News Network, the series will be an adaptation of the 12th compiled book volume of Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi's Ultraman manga that was recently revealed. For any of you that are fans of Ultraman, this is exciting news and if you're curious to know what the story entails, here's a synopsis for the manga that was released:
Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined Shin Hayata of the Scientific Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters known as Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero - a new kind of Ultraman.

Ray guns! Space armadas! Storm troopers! Toei's manga became a pricey 3-D animated motion capture epic just three years ago, but was denied a release stateside. This collector's disc set gives us rude 'n' raucous space battles, along with a pirate's bounty of original Japanese extras. Don't worry, the 3-D visuals are excellent. Heavenly Sword is a dramatic tale of revenge that sees Nariko (Anna Torv), a fiery red-haired heroine, embark on a quest for vengeance against the invading King Bohan (Alfred Molina) and his army. Once considered the failure of a legendary prophesy, Nariko must wield a sword that was ultimately meant for another. This ancient Heavenly Sword, once belonging to a powerful deity, can never be wielded by a mortal without it slowly but inevitably killing them. For Nariko it is a race against time to avenge her clan before her life is irreparably overtaken by the omnipotent Heavenly Sword.

Anime fan favourite Space Pirate Captain Harlock stars in a new movie... but is it worth the wait?
If you're a fan of manga, you probably already know Harlock, although his fan following is much larger in France, Quebec and Japan. Harlock is the brainchild of Leiji Matsumoto (creator of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers). Harlock was created in the 50s, but his breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of the original television series, Space Pirate Captain Harlock. He has since then seen many incarnations, but he had been absent from our screens since 2002. Given the current trend of revisiting old franchise favourites, Harlock was bound to suffer the reboot treatment at one point. Harlock has already been rebooted several times over the years, long before the term "reboot" was actually coined, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, but some fans feared that Harlock's move to the big...

Gfm records deals out of Cannes on Terry Jones’ comedy [pictured], among others.
UK sales and financing outfit Gfm Films has given details of sales racked up in the way of last month’s Cannes market.
One title that has caught buyers’ attention is Absolutely Anything, directed by Monty Python’s Terry Jones and starring Simon Pegg and Kate Beckinsale.
Following earlier deals, the film has now gone to Ocean Films for France and Parco for Japan.
The film recently completed principal photography and is now embarking on an extensive post production period with CGI being produced at London based Nvizible. Delivery is scheduled for February 2015 with the UK release through Lionsgate set for early next summer.
The news that Netflix has acquired Harlock: Space Pirate for its “Premier” platform for the key territories of USA, Canada, UK, Latin America, Scandinavia and Benelux helped push further sales on that title.

When we had the idea to start posting galleries of particularly noteworthy disc-releases, we did not intend to make this an exclusively French affair. But the thing is: the French really enjoy pimping the films they love, and even those they are merely fond of. And these things sell as well, there is a healthy market for them, giving distributors extra incentive to pretty-up their releases. Take this French release for Aramaki Shinji's Space Pirate Captain Harlock, or simply Albator as they call him in France. The film itself has us divided here at Twitch. While it looks gorgeous, and some found it fun (see Peter van der Lugt's review), others think the film is soulless, merely a very long videogame cutscene. So who is...

This summer, we'll get a new Appleseed feature in cinemas, and the good people of IGN.com have just posted an English-language trailer for it. This iteration is called Appleseed Alpha, and shows the adventures of female supersoldier Deunan and her friend Briareos, who after grievous battle injuries has been resurrected as a giant cyborg. Together they travel across an urban landscape ravaged by war, looking for pockets of civilization. The director is Aramaki Shinji, who also did the previous two Appleseed cgi-films and, more recently, the Space Pirate Captain Harlock 3D movie. Plot-wise, it sounds like this film stays a bit closer to Masamune Shirow's manga stories. Image-wise, well... faces look a lot more realistic when compared to the earlier films, but Deunan now wears a...

“Space Pirate Captain Harlock” blasts off again in a new, hugely expensive big screen CG animation that presents a new vision of Matsumoto Leiji’s famous manga, previously adapted as a popular television anime back in the late 1970s, which many viewers in the East and West still remember fondly from their childhoods. Produced with a budget of Us$30 million, the film was directed by Aramaki Shinji, who helmed the recent series of CG “Appleseed” outings, and was made using cutting edge motion capture technology, with characters voiced by the likes of Oguri Shun, Miura Haruma and Aoi Yu. Taking place either “far, far in the future or perhaps in the distant past”, the film is set during a time when humanity has discovered faster than light travel and has colonised the universe, only to be faced with dwindling resources and a falling birth rate. Facing extinction, some five hundred...

"During the last Great War, a man rose to become a hero. But then he betrayed his country to become a pirate. Is he truly an enemy of the state? Or its last great hope?" A new behind-the-scenes feature for the cgi animated Space Pirate Captain Harlock has been revealed. It focuses on the performance capture for the animated film and also contains a new clip. The film recently premiered in Japan on September 7th. Appleseed's Shinji Aramaki directed the CG film which has been called a reinterpretation of the themes in Leiji Matsumoto's original 1977 manga. The film has Toei Animation's highest production budget ever which equates to about $30M U.S. Director James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) previously praised the series as, "Mythic, epic and visually unprecedented, Harlock will take you to a whole new universe of ideas." Following the announcement that came earlier this week, launching yet another hugely impressive line-up at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the respective line-up has now been announced for what is in some ways its European counterpart, the 2013 Venice Film Festival.

With still several films not yet announced for the behemoth Toronto Int. Film Festival, it appears that 2013 will be a significant cross-over year for Venice titles (Joe, Night Moves, Parkland, Philomena, Tracks, Under the Skin) landing in the Canadian capitol and from the get-go, it appears that Toronto programmers have indeed stole some of the thunder from the Alberto Barbera’s Lido, specifically in the case where they grabbed world premiere rights to Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave with the Fox Searchlight folks possibly looking to keep the film on North American soil. However, for the time being that are titles that are worth salivating over that will be making their preems on the Lido – along with a grab bag of Euro and Asian titles we have the highly anticipated showings for Hayao Miyazaki’s Kaze Tachinu, Tsai Ming-liang’s Stray Dogs, Xavier Dolan’s Tom a la Ferme...

Look out for the ship … with the giant ramming skull! I’ve never actually heard of “Space Pirate Captain Harlock”, but then again, I’ve never heard of a lot of things. It looks pretty cool, though. So what is Space Pirate Captain Harlock, anyway? We’re told that it’s about the titular Captain Harlock, who “rebels against Earth’s inept government and fights for humanity with his crew of 40 aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia”. Apparently it started life as a Japanese manga in the late ’70s, became an animated TV series about the same time, and even inspired some big-screen movies. The trailer that you see below is for a new “Captain Harlock” CG movie directed by Shinji Aramaki and written by Harutoshi Fukui. Starring Yuu Aoi, Arata Furuta, Ayano Fukuda, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Maaya Sakamoto, Miyuki Sawashiro, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, and Chikao Ohtsuka, “Space Pirate Captain Harlock” is...
