The unpredictability with this filmmaker-actor is that he has got plenty of projects stoking the fire and we never know which item might push forth next. Prolific, inexhaustible, enervating and stoic with literature’s greats, James Franco‘s selected career path merits its own NYC course of its own. Franco could probably fit it in his schedule and teach it. After tending to the rabbits on Broadways’ Of Mice and Men, it’s Steinbeck follow in the footsteps of Cormac McCarthy and William Faulkner as book to film interests. Production began on In Dubious Battle at the beginning of the year. Mostly shot in Atlanta, this amassed a crew of players comprised of Analeigh Tipton, Josh Hutcherson, Selena Gomez, Bryan Cranston, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ashley Greene, Nat Wolff, Ed Harris, Duvall, Zach Braff, Austin Stowell, Keegan Allen, Darin Cooper, Ahna O’Reilly, John Savage, Beth Grant, Scott Haze and of course Franco himself.

Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful time of the year. The 32nd edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 21st with Park City and Salt Lake City. Two decades back, Steven Ascher and Jeanne Jordan’s Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern was the Grand Jury Prize winner in the Documentary section while Todd Solondz’s Welcome to the Dollhouse beat out the likes of Nicole Holofcener’s Walking and Talking, Stanley Tucci and Campbell Scott’s Big Night, Mary Harron’s I Shot Andy Warhol and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth for the Grand Jury Prize dramatic.

He had made name for himself with the Cannes debut We Are What We Are in 2010, and the remake of his film actually premiered at the fest not that much time afterwards. With production commencing late in 2013, we’re surprised that Jorge Michel Grau’s English language debut didn’t drop in 2014 — but only means a little more time in post for the shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico thriller. Requiem for a Cave Man: Franco’s McCarthy Adaptation Displays Growth
On a similar directorial trajectory as, let’s say, Joe Swanberg, where quality vs. quantity tends to have adversely affected the end product of many a project, actor/screenwriter/director James Franco has shown surprising growth with his latest directorial effort to hit theaters, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Child of God. Begrudging as many may be toward the film, especially rabidly committed fans of the source material, one has to admit that considerable growth has been evidenced in this recent sampling of Franco’s cycle-stomping over his literary idols, veering haphazardly over Faulkner, McCarthy, and Bukowski. Certainly, there are a few issues to haggle over, but there’s a captivating performance and a queasy ambience to the film that at least makes it a sober sort of hillbilly horror. Yes, perhaps this is sacrilege to those...

If there’s anyone who doesn’t need more exposure, it’s James Franco. But don’t tell that to Lisa Vangellow, an unknown director who The Wrap reports has been shooting a documentary on the prolific actor since last June. And to give it a little more professional cred, it’s being cut by Franco’s own editor for his upcoming movie Bukowski, Curtiss Clayton (also of Drugstore Cowboy, Buffalo ’66 and much more). According to an official synopsis for the Franco documentary, which is simply titled Franco: A Documentary, Vangellow was an Mfa student of his at UCLA, and she is approaching the subject of her film from that perspective. “The documentary will examine the incredible stamina and work ethic that James Franco possesses and how he incorporates this into his various areas of artistic interest,” states the Orchid Child Productions website. “What inspires and motivates him to take on so much and how is it...

In addition to being seemingly everywhere all of the time, actor James Franco will now be the subject of a documentary. First-time director Lisa Vangellow began shooting Franco: A Documentary last June, capturing the actor's controversies in the art and academic worlds as well as his career in film and on Broadway, The Wrap reports. Franco's family and friends, including Seth Rogen and New York Museum of Modern Art chief curator-at-large Klaus Biesenbach, are expected to appear in the film. The documentary is currently in the early editing stages.

New York (AP) — James Franco says his recent Instagram postings of him in bed — alone or not — are his way of sharing a "very kind of intimate portrait" of himself and to get people talking. "It's not like I'm exposing myself or anything," he said in an interview Thursday. Franco calls selfies and Instagram phenomena "that I am just playing around with like everybody else" to see what kind of reaction it evokes. He says when he takes pictures of himself, "It's almost like it's connected to you" and that by putting "that intimate space out there it's kind of this new thing that we're all getting used to." He also says that it "obviously causes a lot of stir," noting that he was being asked about the photos by reporters. The actor, author and director wrote in a New York Times essay last December titled "The Meanings Of The...

Director: James Franco
Writer: Matt Rager
Producers: Caroline Aragon, Lee Caplin, Vince Jolivette
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: James Franco, Tim Blake Nelson, Loretta Devine, Danny McBride, Jon Hamm, Dave Franco
The mind-bogglingly busy James Franco experienced such success with last year’s adaptation of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying that’s he’s fast at work on another of Faulkner’s beloved works. While Martin Ritt directed this in 1959 starring Yul Brynner, Franco has assembled some of his Dying cast to return, like Tim Blake Nelson and Danny McBride. We’re excited to see the lovely Loretta Devine in the lineup, as well. With the success of Dying, this is bound to be an interesting companion piece. And, oh yeah, Franco also directed a Bukowski biopic and is filming new projects with Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog amidst a handful of other titles.

The elusive “Golden Ticket”. Beginning next Wednesday (December 4th) in a wave of four announcements, is when the official word comes out. Plenty of filmmakers are already in the know, but some will find out over the course of this Thanksgiving weekend. Having covered the festival and fest circuit for some time now, we’re already aware that worthy films that were indeed submitted will be excluded from the ’14 edition. Thousands of filmmakers won’t get the phone call, and while it can bruise dreams, this is not a rejection of quality…but rather, a preference from a programmer/programming team which reflects a larger mandate. John Cooper, Trevor Groth et al. have a difficult job and the way I see it, it’s the equivalent to draft day for a major professional sport – where a team in a given turn doesn’t go for the consensus pick, but instead...

Not unlike Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s rapport with the festival, Sundance has become a place where James Franco/RabbitBandini Productions gets to both test-drive and showcase his creative output. Last year’s fest saw him showcase both Interior. Leather Bar. and kink, and while we fully expect to see the filmmaker there for Bukowski, with Holy Land as a possible outside shot, there potentially might be room in the New Frontier section for an anthology of films that were ultimately “patched” together by Nyu graduate students. Closer to Tar than the previous pair of mentioned titles, shooting on Black Dog, Red Dog began in early 2012 with a tally of ten, mostly inexperienced filmmakers that for at least nine of them had to win a contest to be part of the “larger” project.

A bunch of new set photos from James Franco’s As I Lay Dying have arrived, in preparation for the film’s Cannes debut. In this latest bunch we get a first look at Danny McBride in character. You’ll recognise McBride, as he’s worked with Franco in Pineapple Express, Your Highness and this summer’s upcoming meta-com This Is The End. McBride takes on the role of Vernon for As I Lay Dying, and based on the source material it’s doubtful there’ll be slapstick humour aplenty for their latest collaboration.

Werner Herzog’s having a tough time getting his Gertrude Bell biopic Queen Of The Desert moving. He has Naomi Watts and Robert Pattinson still attached to co-star and though he lost Jude Law, you’d think the two big names would be enough to crack open the financing wallets. Not so – but now he has James Franco as a possible replacement for Law.The situation remains fragile, however, as Franco is a typically busy bod and might not have time to fill the role. Expect this dancing around diaries to continue for a while yet.Queen Of The Desert follows Watts as Bell, the writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer and political reformer as she broke down barriers and trod her own path at the birth of the 20th century. Pattinson is down to play Colonel T.E. Lawrence and Franco is being courted to step in as Henry Cadogan, who romanced Bell before his untimely death.
