Frankie Shaw is coming off a pair of Golden Globe nominations for herself and the show she created and stars in, “Smilf.” The Showtime comedy series about a single mother struggling to pay the bills in South Boston, was loosely based on Shaw’s own life and co-stars Emmy winner Rosie O’Donnell, Screen Actors Guild Award winner Samara Weaving, multiple Emmy nominee Connie Britton, and more. Before “Smilf,” Shaw rose to prominence with a starring role in “Blue Mountain State” and a recurring role in “Mr. Robot,” which helped her gain financial stability while developing “Smilf.”
Shaw recently spoke with Gold Derby contributing editor Zach Laws on an exclusive webchat about creating “Smilf,” working with O’Donnell, and what’s ahead for Season 2. Watch our video with Shaw above and read the complete interview transcript below.

“We get conditioned to want to put mothers in a box,” says “Smilf” creator and star Frankie Shaw. “But in reality mothers are complex, multi-faceted people who have desire” and also want to “put their children first, so you have to sort of balance both.” This freshman Showtime series centers on Bridgette Bird (Shaw), a young single mother and actress. Shaw based the show on her own experiences, admitting that she initially wrote the pilot because she was “sick of being a broke, struggling actress with a toddler.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Shaw above.

Like Shaw, Bridgette grew up in blue collar South Boston, where she tries to juggle work with family. While “there are similarities” to Shaw’s own life, there are also “great departures. As I tell people, I didn’t call the show ‘Frankie.

It's the time of year where we're all playing catch-up with everything we missed in theaters. This prepares us for that most sacred of cinephile traditions: End-of-year list-making!
I had heard a lot of good things about Eliza Hittman's Beach Rats when it was released in theaters late this summer, but I wasn't able to catch it. But nothing I had heard about it prepared me for what I found. Beach Rats is nothing if not the inverse of the acclaimed (and currently playing) Call Me By Your Name; nearly everything in one is the opposite of the other.
It starts with our protagonists, Harris Dickinson's Frankie and Timothée Chalamet's Elio. Both are possessed of a certain amount of self-confidence but even more self-doubt...

How, exactly, does one transfer the sum of a person’s memories, personality, intelligence — an entire being, really — and just pop it into a new body?
To hear the minds behind Netflix’s Altered Carbon explain it, swapping consciousness involves the same basic principle, and only a little more effort, than sliding a DVD into a player and pressing Play.
The streaming video service released a featurette Tuesday that offers some crucial background related to its upcoming sci-fi drama, which is based on Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 novel of the same name. Per the official logline, the dystopian series “is an intriguing story of murder,...

From The Twilight Zone to Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who and more, Den Of Geek’s writers revisit the TV episodes that truly terrify them…
It’s Halloween! Icicles are glistening from window sills. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires. North Pole elves are… hang on, no. None of that nice, fluffy stuff is happening. At Halloween, demonic creatures hunt for flesh, monsters creep out of their graves, and TV does its level best to freak us all the hell out.
In the spirit of all that, we asked our writers to select and share the TV episodes, horror or otherwise, that have made them whimper with fear. Here they all are, 31 of them, because, well, at Halloween, we like things to add up to 31.
Note that this isn’t a Top 10, or a Best Of, nor is it listed in order of scariness. It’s a collection of the particular...

The contradiction in film criticism certainly does not go unnoticed. Sure, there are countless films that are praised and applauded for its excellence in quality and creativity. Unfortunately, the overlooked cinema fare that deserves just as much attention (more so than some of the recognized critically-acclaimed selections on an impressive selection of critics’ and moviegoers’ radars) get lost in the proverbial shuffle. It is simply the professional hazard of the movie industry because not every well-received and standout gem will get its rightful due come major awards season in Hollywood.
Just how many times have we as movie reviewers and/or movie fans become indignant when we realized that the special piece of entertainment we personally and critically cherished came up short and empty in expectations? Again, every smart kid in the classroom cannot get a gold star as we remain a competitive society in the world of celluloid superiority.

Eve Myles has admitted that she still hopes for a Torchwood comeback.
The actress - soon to be seen in new BBC One drama Frankie - told CultBox that the Doctor Who spinoff may return to television "now or... in twenty years time".
"We didn't come back for the fifth series," she acknowledged. "[But] it's still there - it's still bubbling away.

Myles confirmed that she has heard nothing about a potential fifth series, but added that she is eager to reprise her role of Gwen Cooper.
"When [series creator Russell T Davies is] ready, if he is ever ready, then he's got people who love and adore it just as much as he does," she said.
