10 Best YouTuber Cameos In Movies & TV Shows
Image
YouTube has only been around as a company for just a little over 20 years at the time of writing, and yet in that small span of time, it's turned many ordinary folks into full-fledged celebrities. Lots of performers have gotten their starts on YouTube, whether it's 10-year-old Sabrina Carpenter's best covers of Taylor Swift and Adele, or teenage Bo Burnham's comedy music taking him from his childhood bedroom to Netflix specials. Even though many have transcended the online space for A-list fame, others have made whole careers out of their independent work.

In the past 10 or so years, it hasn't been uncommon for YouTubers to gain a little more notoriety by making small cameos in film and TV. Some are lucky enough to get side gigs acting in popular TV shows on HBO or NBC, while others get a sliver of the spotlight in big studio releases worldwide.

Edgar Wright’s The Running Man and Josh Boone’s Regretting You, which will likely follow in the footsteps of the Blake Lively-starring It Ends With Us and further pave a path for future Collen Hoover film adaptations like Verity and Reminders of Him.

How I Met Your Mother Features A Sneaky Cameo From Its Two Creators
Image
There's nothing more delightful than when a director/creator inexplicably shows up in the thing they're making. That's why I'll always love M. Night Shyamalan movies, even the bad ones, and why I love every Gordon Cole scene throughout "Twin Peaks." Sure, sometimes the guy doing the cameo isn't good at acting, but that's often part of the charm, like when writer John Green awkwardly stumbled through a deleted scene of "The Fault in Our Stars."

"How I Met Your Mother" got in on this schtick too with its season 1 episode, "Milk." This episode features a scene where Barney attempts (and succeeds at) an elaborate pick-up line, one that starts off with him scaring a woman at the bar by acting like she's having some serious health crisis. As part of the trick, Barney even brings in two paramedics who are apparently in on the ruse. Those paramedics are played...

Every Upcoming Colleen Hoover Adaptation, Explained
Image
It is almost impossible to not know who Colleen Hoover is, considering that her name has been and continues to be all over the internet in connection to the Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively lawsuit after the release of their movie, It Ends With Us, based on Hoover's novel of the same name. Colleen Hover is arguably the most famous author on Booktok and Wattpad, feeding fans and avid readers with romance. Admired for her ability to bring captivating stories to paper, Hoover’s name has been connected to controversies, nonetheless.

However, it seems that, despite the It Ends With Us controversy, it didn’t end there for Colleen Hoover. She seemingly can’t be stopped, not even when one of the biggest lawsuits in Hollywood is connected to her name to some extent. The Booktok sensation certainly isn’t leaving the spotlight, as she has three other projects already in the starting blocks.

4 Hollywood Stars Who Got Canceled Before They Could Become A-List
Image
Hollywood is a marketing game, which means that public images of actors and other creatives are paramount. Morality clauses are an integral part of any contract that is signed between production companies and actors, giving the company (and the industry) the right to remove the actor and disengage with them.

Shia Labeouf in The Peanut Butter Falcon || Credit: Roadside Attraction

A lot of times, this is leveled at A-list actors, whose fall from grace is quick and decisive, but more often than not, it also plagues actors who are on the path to becoming big names in Hollywood. When they do get canceled, they are all over the news for a few short months and then disappear off of the face of the earth. These four actors faced something similar, being on the rise in the industry with some pretty great films. However, their path to A-list stardom was stalled...

Top movie on Netflix needed a better title for box office success
Image
How well a movie performs at the box office is just as often a function of how well it's marketed as how well it's made. The current number 1 movie on Netflix in the U.S. is a perfect example of this. The marketing of any movie begins with the title. And, wow, did they ever miss on this one.

The movie in question is To Catch a Killer, a solid suspense film released in 2023. It came out on April 21st and almost immediately disappeared from movie screens everywhere. In case you forgot, this was the year of BarbenHeimer. Barbie grossed $1.45 billion, while Oppenheimer took in $976 million. Oh, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie wedged between them with the tidy sum of $1.36 billion.

To Catch a Killer wasn't quite as popular. It brought in the grand sum of $3,138,750. That's three million, not three billion. I mean, you and I would be...

Shailene Woodley's Crime Thriller Flop Is Dominating Netflix's Top Charts
Image
This post contains discussion of mass violence and mental health.

At this point in time, it sort of seems like serial killer thrillers are a dime a dozen — but despite that, one starring Shailene Woodley just got added to Netflix and quickly became one of the most-streamed projects on the platform (according to FlixPatrol).

"To Catch a Killer," a crime flick directed by Damián Szifron (who co-wrote the movie alongside Jonathan Wakeham), stars Woodley as Eleanor Falco, a beat cop who's stuck working the New Year's Eve shift in Baltimore when a gunman starts killing partygoers indiscriminately with a sniper rifle. When Eleanor and her team locate the apartment where the gunman appears to be located, they find it empty — and the investigation begins in earnest. Teaming up with FBI Special Agent Geoffrey Lanmark (Ben Mendelsohn), Eleanor is on the case and tries to track down this mass shooter before...

Ben Mendelsohn and Shailene Woodley's 'To Catch a Killer' is Top of the Netflix Streaming Chart
Image
Netflix is very quickly becoming the home of previous years’ box office disasters, and to prove a point, 2023’s crime thriller To Catch a Killer starring Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn is sitting at the top of the streamer’s movie chart. While the film is underrated by some, there is no way to deny that it was a complete flop at the box office, taking just $3.1 million at the box office on its initial release.

Damián Szifron directed and wrote the project, with Jonathan Wakeham also serving as a writer. Szifron and Woodley are also producers alongside Stuart Manashil (Watcher) and Aaron Ryder (Arrival). The movie plays out with very similar traits to The Silence of the Lambs, with a young agent being recruited by the FBI to track down a serial killer with her unique, disturbed view of the world. The synopsis reads:

“A modern-day Clarice Starling, Eleanor...

Image
Ah, "The Notebook," the go-to romantic drama for date nights and Valentine's Day. This 2004 tear-jerker about good-looking people dealing with love and heartbreak hits all the feels, right down to its surprising and emotional twist ending.

Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the story follows the love affair between Noah (Gosling) and Allie (McAdams) as told by an elderly man (James Garner) to a female patient (Gena Rowlands) in the present. Noah, you see, is a poor lumber mill worker, while Allie is rich beyond belief. Naturally, her parents object, then a war whisks Noah away long enough for Allie to become engaged with another man (James Marsden). Will our star-crossed lovers overcome the many obstacles and end happily ever after, or will life pull them apart?

Every Movie & TV Show Coming To (& Leaving) Hulu in February 2025
Image
As January wraps up, Hulu is keeping the momentum going with an impressive lineup of new titles next month. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows, or both, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout February.

Hulu is starting strong with over 60 new titles arriving on February 1 alone. Some standout additions include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as all four seasons of the classic ’90s drama New York Undercover.

Reality TV fans will also have something to look forward to with the season six premiere of The Kardashians.

But as exciting as the new arrivals are, there’s always the bittersweet reality that some beloved titles are leaving. In February, Hulu will only be removing movies, so TV lovers can breathe easy. However, the list of departing films includes some good titles, like Titane (2021) and Spencer (2021), which earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination.

‘Wish You Were Here’ Review: Julia Stiles Directs a Surprisingly Subtle Spin on Romantic Weepies
Image
With “Wish You Were Here,” author Renée Carlino provides the blueprint for a romantic drama that could easily be misconstrued as treacly or saccharine. Her novel features a star-crossed love affair, a devastating terminal illness and a young woman caught at a crossroads in her life. Yet instead of fashioning these elements into a mimeographed iteration of “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Dying Young” or pretty much anything from Nicholas Sparks’ oeuvre, director Julia Stiles constructs something fresh. The actor-turned-filmmaker, who co-adapts with Carlino, instills the source material with a clear-eyed sense of emotional authenticity, from its fantastical romanticism to the characters’ delicately-faceted relationship dynamics.

Twentysomething Charlotte (Isabelle Fuhrman) is directionless, waitressing at an unpopular Mexican dive bar with her roommate Helen (Gabby Kono-Abdy). Together the besties are annoyed by the mundanity of their jobs, from fielding ridiculous customer complaints to suffering the indignity of having their service summoned by...

Every Upcoming Colleen Hoover Movie After It Ends With Us
Image
Despite the (ongoing) drama surrounding "It Ends With Us" — and, in particular, its two stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, the latter of whom also directed the film — the adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling 2016 novel of the same name earned an abundance of cash at the box office when it came out in the summer of 2024. Why do I bring up the movie's financial success amidst the apparent, alleged strife between Baldoni and Lively? Because studio executives very likely watched "It Ends With Us" crush the summer box office and thought, "What other Colleen Hoover books can we possibly adapt?"

As for Hoover herself, she worked closely with the team on "It Ends With Us" to create the film — she was quite present during the press tour — and told The Hollywood Reporter that she loved seeing her work adapted for the screen. "It's very surreal," Hoover said in August...

Shailene Woodley Almost Turned Down ‘Big Little Lies,’ but Laura Dern Told Her ‘It’s a Massive Mistake’: ‘It Forever Changed My Life’
Image
Shailene Woodley scored her first-ever Emmy nomination for playing Jane Chapman on the hit HBO series “Big Little Lies.” But, according to Woodley, she nearly turned down the role.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Woodley expressed her excitement over the opportunity to work with Jean-Marc Vallée, calling him an “incredible artist and filmmaker.” However, because Woodley had prior plans to travel to India on a journey of self-exploration, her involvement in the project was initially going to be delayed.

That is until Laura Dern stepped in. Woodley recalled how Dern, who played Renata Klein on “Big Little Lies,” ultimately convinced her to take on the role of Jane.

“She just said, ‘Listen, I know where you’re at in your life, I’ve been there before too. It’s a lot, this world is an illusion, but what isn’t an illusion is what you love to do.

In fact, if she hadn’t begged her agents to get a callback for this particular piece, perhaps Woodley may have even ended up losing out on the role!

Was the Ending of The Fault in Our Stars Too Heartbreaking? Analyzing Its Emotional Impact (Photo Credit – Facebook)

When the credits rolled on The Fault in Our Stars, many viewers were left reaching for tissues and wondering: was that ending necessary? Their connection blossomed in Amsterdam, where Gus offered Hazel the romance and normalcy she’d craved. But then came the gut punch—his death. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas’s Big Twist Used the Fault in Our Stars Formula that Cost the Movie Its Tragic Themes
Image
Of all the overused tropes in the romance genre, terminal illness is one of them. Death, however, isn’t controversial as much as the treatment of the theme. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is one such example of its treatment of illness. The film’s portrayal of a grave illness contrasts with John Green’s masterpiece The Fault In Our Stars. And there’s more to it.

Green’s movie outlines the complexities associated with the theme. With a sensitive approach, the movie was able to portray grief and loss. On the other hand, the animated movie failed to garner empathy.

Through its controversial move, the film made a complete mockery of terminal illness. Moreover, the author’s approach to death is rather insensitive. What could have been a tragic moment was reduced to a cheap move.
