David Wnendt, the German director behind controversial coming-of-age movie “Wetlands,” Hitler satire “Look Who’s Back” and teen crime drama “Sun and Concrete,” is once again pushing boundaries with his next feature film project.
Backed by distributor-producer Constantin Film and with Seven Elephants lead producing, Wnendt has embarked on the feature film adaptation of the award-winning novel “Athos 2643” by Nils Westerboer.
Wnendt, who will both write the screenplay and direct the theatrical film, promises an “emotional and spectacular experience that will take the audience into the vastness of outer space,” according to a press statement.
“Athos 2643” has been described as “‘The Name of the Rose’ in Space.” In the distant future, a mysterious crime unfolds on the lonely Neptune moon of Athos. An artificial intelligence responsible for life support is suspected of murder. An inquisitor specializing in artificial intelligence is sent to solve the case.

March brings a fresh slate of new shows and films to Hulu. The rotation of the catalogue also makes room for well-loved films arriving on the streamer this month. Sports buffs will enjoy “Love and Basketball” (2000) as well as “Kicking & Screaming” (2005). Animated family favorites include “Rio” (2011) and “Ice Age: Continental Drift” (2010).
As for new releases, Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon play hard-working journalists in the investigative thriller “Boston Strangler” (2023) from writer and director Matt Ruskin. Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

“There is a new studio Star System…but instead of focusing on acting talent (as it did in the 1930s), it prioritizes those with the skills to create new stories, produce new shows and manage the evolution of new character IP…in other words, to make content that will succeed by the measures important in the new world order,” Ampere Analysis’ Guy Bisson announced at MipTV in a presentation.
By that measure, few figures were as important at this month’s buoyant French TV festival Canneseries than German author Ferdinand von Schirach and Constantin TV’s Oliver Berben.

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

Now that we’re just over halfway through October, it’s time to look ahead to what’s arriving on Hulu across November. And the penultimate month of the year is set to deliver a humungous haul of new movies and TV shows. In particular, fresh off their Huluween celebrations, the streaming service is celebrating Christmas early with a load of holiday-related titles dropping on November 1st.
Various films with Christmas in the name land that day – including Christmas in Compton, The Dog Who Saved Christmas and Once Upon a Time at Christmas – as well as a bunch of festive Food Network shows. A few more arrive on the 15th as well. But even if you’re not in the mood for holiday cheer until December, there’s still plenty to enjoy from what’s coming to Hulu in November.

After breaking out with his debut Wetlands, director David Wnendt returned to Sundance Film Festival with his English-language debut The Sunlit Night, starring Jenny Slate, Zach Galifianakis, Alex Sharp, and Gillian Anderson. The film follows Slate’s character as a woman who has reached a dead end in her life in America and ventures to a Norwegian island for an art residency that becomes much more strange than expected.
Following its premiere last year at Sundance, the adaptation of Rebecca Dinerstein’s novel is now set for a release next month, and the first trailer and poster have landed. Unfortunately, reviews for this one weren’t too positive across the board, but for Jenny Slate fans, it’s nice to see her in another leading role after Obvious Child.

The Sunlit Night follows an aspiring painter (Slate) from New York City to the farthest reaches of Arctic Norway for an assignment she hopes will invigorate her work and expand her horizons. In a remote village, among the locals, she meets a fellow New Yorker (Sharp), who has come in search of a proper Viking funeral only to find that the Chief (Galifianakis) is but a re-enactor from Cincinnati. The eclectic crew ranges from “home” to “lost,” within the extreme and dazzling landscape of the Far North. Now, this icky and poignant tale of anal fissures and semen-coasted pizza — all positioned within the perspective of a young German woman taking control of her troubled world — has become the ultimate fantasy of the social distancing age.

Ever since seeing Bloodline at the 2019 Popcorn Frights Film Festival, I've had its infectious, synth-infused soundtrack stuck in my head, as the original music by Trevor Gureckis is like its own character in the film, giving the serial killer story a deadly pulse that hearkens back to some of the most memorable collaborations between John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. With Bloodline—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack coming to digital via Lakeshore Records on September 20th (the same day the film will be released in theaters and on Digital and VOD by Momentum Pictures), we've been provided with an exclusive track from the film's score to share with Daily Dead readers.

Robert Rodriguez is developing a new superhero project for Netflix called We Can Be Heroes and he’s starting to fill up it’s ensemble with actors such as Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), YaYa Gosselin (FBI Most Wanted, The Purge), Akira Akbar (Captain Marvel, This Is Us) and Pedro Pascal.
The story follows “the children of Earth’s superheroes after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders. The children must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world.”
Yeah, that seems like the kind of film project that Robert Rodriguez would want to make. It’s not the first time he’s dabbled in action films that center around kids like the Spy Kids franchise and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. He most recently helmed that badass feature film adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel.

Netflix film We Can Be Heroes will see Robert Rodriguez direct an alien invasion epic, which has an intriguing cast.
We Can Be Heroes is yet another Netflix film project for which the streaming giant has tapped a high-profile name, in this case that of action auteur Robert Rodriguez. However, this particular offering will see Rodriguez tap into his more family-friendly side, utilizing a cast of kids; a side that yielded him 2000s-era success with the Spy Kids film franchise.

"Humans have always had a complex relationship with water." I guess that's true...? Believe it or not, there is a "mermaid community" out there. People who love mermaids so much (or wish to be one) that they get fully dressed up, fish tail and all, and play around in the water as if they are mermaids. In Persia Beheshti's new documentary film Wetlands, she uses surrealism to spotlight an American subculture rarely explored on film. Narrated by Mermaid Undine, this short experimental doc film allows outsiders to become privy to the sometimes mythological, sometimes metaphysical ocean inspirations that awaken this mermaid community. She found this group in Virginia and has befriended them, making another short film about them before this. It's just a quick 3 minutes and it's more mesmerizing than informative. Dive in. Thanks to Olia for the tip on this. Description from Vimeo: "Wetlands is a experimental...

Newcomers Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim have signed on to join the ensemble cast of “Ghostbusters 2020,” sources tell Variety.
The pair joins Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, “Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard, and “Gifted” star Mckenna Grace.
Jason Reitman, whose father Ivan Reitman directed the original “Ghostbusters,” will helm “Ghostbusters 2020.” Reitman also co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan and plans to begin shooting this summer.
Sony declined to comment on plot details, but insiders tell Variety the story will be an extension of the original “Ghostbusters” and focus on Coon, a single mother, and her family, including Wolfhard as her son. It’s unknown exactly how it connects to the original Ghostbusters series. Details of O’Connor and Kim’s roles are also unknown.
“Celeste and Logan are rare talents and we’re all grateful that they’ll be lending their unique voices to ‘GB20,'” Reitman said in a statement.

Pica, or the compulsion to consume things nowhere to be found on the food pyramid — like handfuls of dirt, stray pieces of jewelry, or a juicy double-a battery — serves as a metaphor for one woman’s struggle against the patriarchy in Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ “Swallow.” A bold and unconventional thriller made real by the evolution of lead actress Haley Bennett (a prize winner at the Tribeca Film Festival) from porcelain housewife to jagged-edged reactionary, this striking debut (not counting earlier shorts or co-directed behind-the-music doc ”The Swell Season”) ignores the medical side of the eating disorder in favor of a far more radical psychological reading.
While not as graphic as 2013 German shocker “Wetlands” (with its grimy public toilet seats and queasy scenes of tampon swapping) nor as gory as 2002’s “In My Skin” (which took the concept of “cutting” to extremes), “Swallow” adopts the same basic strategy as those films, using...

In “The Sunlit Night,” Rebecca Dinerstein shows that she can write funny breakups, awkward Jewish family gatherings, and sweet-and-sour wedding speeches. One doubts she had to go all the way to the Norwegian Arctic to develop that skill, but at least her pilgrimage paid off in the form of the kind of personal writing sample — a twee running-from-romance-only-to-find-it comedy set at that far Northern remove — that, while unlikely ever to be produced, might easily score her work on the staff of a sitcom.
Except her screenplay (first published as a novel) did get produced, and now exists as the kind of movie that Sundance audiences love (the opening-night crowd laughed in all the right places) but hardly anyone goes to see in general release. Filming began way back in April in NYC, with the production moving to Norway for a summer into early fall shoot.

Each year thousands of children are shipped off to near certain death following population purges. Surrounded by ‘freakoids’, genetically engineered children who are able to download knowledge into their brains, Blake has her work cut out to stay educated and stay alive. Over a decade ago, long before he launched the HBO series “Random Acts of Flyness,” multimedia artist Terence Nance and a cadre of like-minded black artists launched Mvmt, a Brooklyn-based production company focused on producing stories about black women. In the wake of “Flyness” landing a second season at HBO, Nance spoke to IndieWire about the company’s growing mission, and its plans to support “Flyness” writer-director Naima Ramos-Chapman’s second short film — a psycho-surrealist thriller titled “Piu Piu.”
“‘Piu Piu’ is the embodiment of not only Naima’s growth as a filmmaker, but also of the type of projects that Mvmt is interested in making,” said Nance in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Mvmt is supportive of voices like hers, as part of a community of artists who are doing it for ourselves. As classical Hollywood cinema scholars David Bordwell and Kristen Johnson pointed out, the traditional American film plot is driven by a “goal-oriented protagonist.” That’s not necessarily the case with European art cinema, which may explain why U.S. audiences have such a hard time connecting to movies where it’s not clear what the hero wants. They won’t have that problem with “Domestique,” an obsessive-compulsive Czech-Slovak body-horror film — easily the most uncomfortable first-date movie Central Europe has produced since “Wetlands” — that centers on two characters who’re as goal-oriented as they come: hard-core Roman (Jiří Konvalinka) is a training maniac, working overtime to recover from a cycling injury, while his health-nut wife Charlotte (Tereza Hofová) wants a child, keeping meticulous track of her fertility calendar.
An audaciously alienating anti-romance from first-time director Adam Sedlák, “Domestique” hardly ever leaves the sterile modern apartment where this high-strung couple co-exists. Otherwise...

It’s the honesty of Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” that really makes the Saoirse Ronan-starring coming-of-age movie sing. Yes, it’s very funny and filled with enough genuinely great performances that it’s actually debatable which supporting star turns in the best work (it’s Laurie Metcalf, or maybe Beanie Feldstein, or possibly Tracy Letts), but what makes Gerwig’s movie such a gem is the honesty that infuses every part and every scene. Ronan’s Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson is a work-in-progress, but she’s also kind of a jerk, and Gerwig never shies away from showing the angstier, angrier side of growing up.
So often, high school-set features tend to lean into the more fun side of those four years, building up to the big dance or the big test or the big graduation, and while Lady Bird is consumed with getting to the next step,...

Don’t fret, replicants: “Blade Runner 2049” will be just fine. Anyone worried that its disappointing box-office numbers will negatively affect Denis Villeneuve, Ryan Gosling, or Harrison Ford is blissfully unaware of how Hollywood works, and what the film lacks in beaucoup bucks it will more than make up for in cultural cachet.
The reason why is simple: Blockbusters aren’t cool. You know what’s cool? Cult classics. And with little chance of financial success, the critically acclaimed “Blade Runner 2049” is virtually assured to become one.
Such a fate could hardly be more apropos. The original “Blade Runner” was a financial failure that initially divided critics, only coming to enjoy its current vaunted status after its theatrical run went the way of tears in rain. An executive back then may have even made...

The following article contains minor spoilers for “Blade Runner 2049.”
In addition to a pair of memorable performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, cinematographer Roger Deakins’ stunning visual work, and director Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian vision, “Blade Runner 2049” has one more element worthy of excitement: a supporting cast of new and rising stars. Many of them have already made their mark on indie cinema, like the perpetually working David Dastmalchian or the irreverent Carla Juri, while others will likely use Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as a springboard for even bigger careers (like Ana de Armas, the film’s biggest find).

Risky and risqué, indie films have always been a home for bold, honest, and controversial visions of teens’ sexuality. Eliza Hittman’s “Beach Rats,” opening this week after bowing at Sundance in January, is another notch in the belt of the sub-genre, a sensitive and often shocking look inside the coming-of-age of a young Brooklyn teen.
Like the best of these films, it’s not all about hormones; it builds on questions about identity and desire. But that’s there too, in sensitively crafted scenes that don’t skimp on reality. Punctuated by some bad choices and an unnerving final act, “Beach Rats” embraces the full spectrum of teen sexuality, even when it’s not exactly alluring.

Reverent and ridiculous in equal measure, Martin Koolhoven’s “Brimstone” is a wild pseudo-Western that trembles beneath the biblical weight of its comically grim story. Told with a steady tone that marries the anivine retribution of the Old Testament with the heightened slickness of a graphic novel, this gruesome carnival of debasement may be set in the lawless frontiers of 19th century America, but it might be more accurately located somewhere between Sodom and Gomorrah and “Sin City.” It’s the kind of movie in which an actor from “Game of Thrones” murders someone who’s taking a shit in an outhouse — the kind of movie in which a dying man, choking on a noose made out of his own intestines, still finds the spirit to tell his wife that he loves her.

Here’s my million-dollar proclamation for Fantasia 2016 – We Are The Flesh will be the most talked-about film of the festival. Some patrons will exit their screening aroused by ethereal pornography that doubles as social commentary. Others will walk out while filmmaker Emiliano Rocha Minter smashes the stylings of Michel Gondry and Lars Von Trier together in a Nfsw (not safe for anywhere, really) apocalyptic orgy. I mean, “Wtf” is going on here – or, more appropriately, “WaTF.” Rocha Minter leaves Everything up to interpretation. Maybe it’s a commentary on primitive associations between our civilized lifestyles and deeply-rooted depravity that we keep stashed away? Maybe it’s a dangerous religious portrayal of the second coming of Christ? Maybe it’s simply about a crazy homeless guy, forced incest, brainwashing, and sex addiction? I Don’T Know.
If you’re coming here for an explanation, you’re going to be sadly disappointed.

Taking him further down the subvert-a-comedic-performer’s-persona trail blazed with Crystal Fairy and Nasty Baby, writer-director Sebastian Silva is hoping to have Will Ferrell lead Captain Dad, a “family thriller” that’s nabbed Catherine Keener and his Crystal Fairy / Magic Magic star Michael Cera. [Variety]
On paper, its set-up doesn’t sound worlds apart from Ferrell’s best-known work: Rich Peelman (there’s your first sign) celebrates his wife’s (Keener) birthday by taking her, their six children, and the children’s partners “on a trip through the Caribbean on a sail boat.” But things go awry when his “subpar sailing abilities [there’s the second] and clashes of attitude with the rest of the family are brought into question” — supposedly to ends more overtly dramatic than comedic.
With good forces (including Archer Gray and Christine Vachon‘s Killer Films) supporting it, we should hear more about Captain Dad in the coming months. Based on established facts,...

Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep? That’s the question Carla Juri will be asking come 2017, now that the Swiss actress has closed a deal to join the all-star cast for Blade Runner 2.
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, confirming that the Wetlands star joins an ensemble that already includes Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks and Dave Bautista. Much like her fellow newcomers, neither Warner Bros. or Alcon Entertainment has offered up any details relating to Juri’s role in the sci-fi sequel; all we know for sure is that the follow-up, one directed by Denis Villeneuve, will take place three decades after its genre-defining original.
Buoyed by the one-two punch of Prisoners and Sicario, Villeneuve is a stellar choice to take the reins of Blade Runner 2, reuniting with decorated cinematographer Roger Deakin in the process. Remaining behind the scenes, Hampton Fancher and Michael Green...

Walking to Paris
Director: Peter Greenaway
Writer: Peter Greenaway
Before he turns 80 years old and cinema dies, auteur Peter Greenaway has announced his plans to finish up thirty projects in the next seven years or so. He’s whittling away at his goal, last year unveiling his first title in a planned trilogy on Sergei Eisenstein at Berlin, the bombastic and beautiful Eisenstein in Guanajuato. Comedy, in which the dictator wakes up in modern-day Berlin, includes Borat-style interactions between the dictator and the public.
Beta Cinema has secured world sales on German-language comedy Look Who’s Back, which has made more than $10m in Germany and recorded more than 1 million admissions in its first two weeks of release.
Adapted from Timur Vermes’ best-selling novel, it imagines what would happen if Adolf Hitler woke up in modern-day Berlin.
Beta will introduce the film to buyers at the Afm (Nov 4-11).
Directed by David Wnendt (Wetlands, Combat Girls), the film sees lead actor Oliver Masucci interact in character with normal people in documentary-style scenes. This is combined with scenes from Vermes’ 2012 book, in which Hitler becomes a media celebrity.

If Kit Harington truly has left Game of Thrones, he likely won't feel too lonely on the set of his next movie Brimstone.
Harington has signed up to star opposite Carice van Houten - who plays Game of Thrones's mystical Melisandre - in the upcoming Western thriller, according to Deadline.
Brimstone follows young Liz, who goes on the run from a vengeful reverend (Guy Pearce) after being accused of a crime she did not commit.
Harington will be replacing Robert Pattinson in Brimstone. Other new cast members are Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows star Paul Anderson and Wetlands actress Carla Juri.
Writer-director Martin Koolhoven's Brimstone is expected to be released next year.
Harington could have more free time on his hands in the coming months, given that he's supposedly not returning to Game of Thrones next season.
