"Arrested" was the absolute funniest episode of four seasons!

Just hilarious. Excellent writing, direction and acting by the entire cast! Please remember Shelly Long for consideration for a Guest Actress in a Comedy Series!

So glad to see her again!

    WE LOVED THIS EPISODE!

Each actor in the show got to display their comedy chops. I suspect that if this is the episode they consider for an Emmy next season it will win for Direction, Writing, Guest Actress, Best Supporting Actor nominations!

    SPOILER ALERT

3am phone calls awake all three couples with the arrest of Haley. Situation Comedy at its ABSOLUTE BEST!

    Make Shelley Long A Regular

IMO the reason this was one of the best episodes is because of Shelley Long. Every episode she has appeared in Modern Family has been excellent. This show needs her quirkiness. She especially works well against Ed Neill. It's hard to imagine that they were ever married to each other, but that's what makes their chemistry in the show so good. I think instead of focusing so much on the kids, the show should focus on their mother. It would be interesting to see how the craziness of both Neill and Long contributed to the makeup of the kids. So far it just seems like Long is brought into the show to be used as a monkey wrench in Neill's second marriage. It's just amazing to me how many more stories can be developed if Long was a regular in the show. 3 episodes is not enough of Shelley Long in Modern Family.

Gloria and Shelley at their most annoying

    Together.

Everything else in the episode is fine.

The Haley character early on was fine. Not too over the top and absurd. Enough to get the point across of what sort of character she is. They of course drive that into the ground and ruin it as the series moves on.

I might have considered an 8 without Shelly Long or Gloria doing what they do. They make the episode less enjoyable for me. I'm sure and guess that a lot of people like it. I can't stand it.

"Arrested" perhaps the best episode in a long time!

I totally agree with the original poster. There have been many great episodes of MODERN FAMILY since the series began but I think this one ranks up there as one of the absolute best. "Arrested" is one of those scripts where every line is so well crafted and perfectly delivered that it is IMHO a classic episode. Writing credits show two writers who I do not recall seeing listed on any previous episodes of the series going back to the very beginning. Becky Mann and Audra Sielaff according to IMDb worked together on"Rules Of Engagement", "It's Always Sunny..." and "Better Off Ted." The various stories were all very strong as were the performances. Everyone in the cast got to shine and there were some nice turns by other players including the student who was at the probationary hearing and it was nice to see Shelley Long make a re-appearance as Dede. The episode was well-directed as all episode are. I hope Levitan and Lloyd give these writers some more assignments in the future. They deserve it!

    • Goofs
When Clare calls Jay in the middle of the night to tell him and Gloria that Haley was arrested, they wake up in a dark room. As they awaken, Gloria goes to turn on a nightstand lamp and you can visibly see that her hand doesn't touch the lamp at all. She's just doing the motion.

Haley Dunphy: In 'Legally Blonde', Elle won her case because she was true to herself and dressed cute.

Phil Dunphy: Haley, this is real life, not an excellent movie.
