It's been almost 50 years since "Rocky" first arrived in 1976, and in that time the franchise has changed dramatically. The "Rocky" saga has now grown beyond original star Sylvester Stallone, with Michael B. Jordan's "Creed III" barely mentioning the man who birthed the now legendary film series. Whatever you think about that, everyone can surely recognize the staying power of the "Rocky" movies, which have formed part of our pop cultural history for the better part of a half century.
None of this could have happened without the first entry in the saga, of course. "Rocky" introduced the world to the scrappy Southpaw from South Philly, who led a film that was remarkable for its realism and affecting performances. Much of that was down to Stallone who, having written the script during a particularly challenging time in his personal life, insisted on starring in the film, only to wow audiences...

Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff are officially in it for the long haul. The pair married Aug. 19, a little over a year after announcing their engagement in May 2022. But the music producer isn't the first public figure Qualley has dated over the years. She was once in a relationship with Nat Wolff, and she and Pete Davidson also dated at one point. Qualley's mom, Andie MacDowell, even gave Davidson her stamp of approval at the time.
Just like she's taken her relationship status to the next level, Qualley's professional life has also blossomed over the past few years. Early roles in "Palo Alto" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" helped kickstart her career, and she received an Emmy nomination in 2022 for her performance in "Maid." This May, she starred as a dominatrix in "Sanctuary" alongside Christopher Abbott, and in 2024 she'll star with Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, and Pedro Pascal in the film "Drive-Away Dolls.

Also set for the fantastical drama, from filmmaker Adam Sigal (Nandor Fodor and The Talking Mongoose), are Cam Gigandet (Violent Night) and Chris Mullinax (Chariot).
The film currently in production is billed as a dark tale about a mysterious mermaid trapped and forgotten for years in the water tower of a small Southern town. Sigal described it as his “attempt to interpret the isolation and wanderlust I felt growing up in a small Southern town.”
The Tower is among the projects that began shooting shortly before the SAG-AFTRA strike launched and went on pause in the wake of the walkout until the securement of a SAG waiver. Producers are B.I. Rosen, Frederic Demey, James Bruce,...

Val Kilmer is having something of a comeback moment with the buzzy release of the documentary “Val” on Amazon Prime Video, and next up for the actor is a return to “Top Gun” by reprising the role of (now Admiral) Tom “Iceman” Kazansky opposite Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick.” Specifics on Kilmer’s “Top Gun” reprisal remain under wraps, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently told People magazine that it was Cruise himself who fought to include Kilmer in the sequel. Kilmer’s career took a pause after the actor lost the ability to speak in 2014 due to throat cancer treatment.
“[Tom Cruise] said, ‘We have to have Val, we have to have him back. We have to have him in the film,'” Bruckheimer said. “And he was the driving force. We all wanted him, but Tom was really adamant that if he’s going to make another ‘Top Gun,’ Val had to be in it.

Yasiin Bey was announced as the star of a Thelonious Monk biopic on Wednesday, but as of Thursday, he appeared to be backing out the project in the wake of complaints coming from the late jazz great’s estate about the planned film.
“If the Monk Estate is not happy with it, if Mr. Monk III is not happy with it, then neither am I,” said Bey, the actor and musician formerly known as Mos Def, on Instagram Thursday morning. “To be clear, I was given every indication by the production company that the family was on board. It was one of my primary questions. … I took them at their word and clearly that wasn’t the case.”
Added Bey, “I can’t lie — I’m super excited, still, if there’s an opportunity to tell this type of story, but in the right way and only with the estate...

Photo: ‘Mainstream’/IFC Films The Harm Within Social Media Culture And Influencers On September 5, 2020, ‘Mainstream’ was first shown to an audience at the Venice Film Festival and appeared at numerous festivals such as Mill Valley Film Festival, Warsaw Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, and more. So far, the film is receiving mixed reviews concerning the storyline that might have been more designated towards change had it been released a few years ago. Writer and director Gia Coppola has only directed one feature film prior to ‘Mainstream’ but has more than shown her creativity with youth stories. Her first feature film, ‘Palo Alto,’ starring Emma Roberts, James Franco, and Jack Kilmer, was a hit success for young adult indie film lovers depicting an incredibly realistic portrayal of self-destruction within a young girl who falls for her soccer coach. Seven years later, Coppola creates, writes and directs ‘Mainstream’ a satire film...

In director Gia Coppola’s latest film, “Mainstream,” her first since 2014’s coming of age indie, “Palo Alto,” the filmmaker once again chronicles the story of disillusioned youth looking for outlets of validation. This time she targets social media and current influencer culture obsessions via her protagonist Frankie (Maya Hawke). Frankie is swept away by the enigmatic YouTube influencer Link (an uninhibited Andrew Garfield), and they quickly amass a sizable online following after a recording of him goes viral.

The Columnist (Ivo van Aart)
Never read the comments—a universal rule for all writers who publish, share, or create on the internet. No matter what you say or how you say it, there will always be a troll ready to disparage your work or you personally. They don’t need a reason beyond their ability to do so. They don’t need a salient point either. And it’s precisely because they possess neither that they ultimately live rent-free inside the minds of everyone they attack with artificial anonymity. One doesn’t even have to read their words to feel their pain because knowing they exist eats at you regardless.

We’ll say this with cautious optimism: the summer movie season is…back? After the coronavirus pandemic upended the 2020 release calendar, pushing back some of the year’s most hyped films and inspiring new avenues of distribution for others, the summer of 2021 is shaping up as platform for blockbusters (from the latest “Fast and Furious” to the post-apocalyptic survival of the “A Quiet Place” installment all the way through a seventh “Conjuring” film) and rife with discoveries (including some festival hits that date all the way back to 2019).
Of course, the distribution landscape has changed radically over the past year, and not every anticipated summer movie will simply head to the multiplex. This season’s lineup includes a wide variety of viewing options that go beyond the brick and mortar theater. It’s a summer defined by options — not only in terms of what you see, but how you choose to see it.

"We're about to go stratospheric!!!" IFC Films has revealed another new trailer for the super wacky indie dark comedy Mainstream, which originally premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival. Strange strategy to release the teaser trailer after the full trailer, but this one plays a bit different. The second feature from filmmaker Gia Coppola (following Palo Alto) is another intense social media cautionary tale about a crazy personality known as "No One Special" that is sucked into internet fame. A young woman thinks she's found a path to internet stardom when she starts making YouTube videos with a charismatic stranger – until the dark side of viral celebrity threatens to ruin them both. Starring Maya Hawke & Andrew Garfield & Nat Wolff, with Kalena Yiaueki, Johnny Knoxville, and also Jason Schwartzman. This trialer has tons of wild quotes - including one from yours truly and my Venice review. This is definitely a loud & crazy film.

Gia Coppola knows the secret to social media appeal: it’s whatever Andrew Garfield is eagerly throwing down in the filmmaker’s sophomore effort, “Mainstream.” The frenetic satire follows the former Spider-Man and Oscar nominee as the wildly obnoxious Link, a viral star whose entire life is about to be upended by his realization that what’s popular isn’t always what’s right.
“I knew this character needed to have an undertone of sweetness in order to follow him, but also Andrew is extremely intelligent and seemed to have similar interests on the subject matter, so he really became a collaborator,” Coppola told IndieWire. “I also loved the idea of seeing him play a type of character that’s different from what he usually gets type casted, [to] let him run wild and play.”

Chekhov’s Gun has never felt more ominous than as part of an arsenal on the wall of a lonely teenager’s bedroom in a slice-of-life movie about modern American high schoolers. In fact, it sometimes feels as if “Beast Beast” writer/director/composer Danny Madden has underestimated the dark cloud such a thing can cast over every inch of his story, even if the inevitability is so obviously the point (and even if the gun doesn’t go off when and where you assume it will).
On one hand, ; as a phenomenon that follows god-awful gun laws and online radicalization with the same meteorological certainty that thunder follows lightning. We see it coming before any of Madden’s characters do, and his film would be held together by our own nauseated helplessness even if it weren’t so percussive, well-acted, and perversely fun to watch. He’s played Spider-Man in the MCU on the screen, and he’s played Prior Walter onstage in Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” but you’ve never quite seen an Andrew Garfield performance like the one in Gia Coppola’s “Mainstream.” In her first feature since the 2013 breakout “Palo Alto,” Garfield plays Link, a scatterbrained, charismatic hoodlum who mostly haunts the trash-ridden streets of Hollywood and Vine with no real purpose. That is until Frankie, played by Maya Hawke, enters his life. Watch the trailer below.
Hawke gets her first major leading feature film role in “Mainstream” as Frankie, a bartender at a comedy club who is grieving the recent death of her father and lost within a world addled by social media content and narcissism. Frankie keeps having cosmic run-ins with the unhinged but alluring Link, and she’s inspired to upload a street rant from him that goes viral.

Social media and YouTube have shown our culture that they are new avenues towards fame and sometimes fortune. But there’s a dark side of celebrity that’s explored in “Mainstream,” the latest directorial effort from Gia Coppola (“Palo Alto“). Following up her debut Palo Alto, Gia Coppola brought Mainstream to the Venice Film Festival last fall. Led by Maya Hawke, Andrew Garfield, Nat Wolff, and Jason Schwartzman, the social media-obsessed satire follows a young woman (Hawke) who thinks she’s found a path to internet stardom when she starts making YouTube videos with a charismatic stranger (Garfield)––until the dark side of viral celebrity threatens to ruin them both. Ahead of an early May release from IFC Films, the first trailer has arrived today.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “It can be easy being a Coppola but, with respect, it’s also difficult not to attribute Mainstream’s lack of self-awareness to some sort of cosseted upbringing. Nobody likes getting preached to––least of all when it comes from the Hollywood glitterati. Coppola is not the first filmmaker to inspect the lure of Internet celebrity nor is she...

For the better part of the last decade, Dev Hynes has been one of the most prolific artists in the kind of taste-making pop and R&b that tops critics’ best-of lists and soundtracks five-course meals at your favorite restaurant. In addition to his five albums as Blood Orange, Hynes’ dance card as a writer-producer includes Solange, Sky Ferreira, Carly Rae Jepsen, A$AP Rocky, Mariah Carey and many others.
And in the past year alone, he’s released his latest Blood Orange project (the star-studded mixtape “Angel’s Pulse”), a collaborative classical album with the quartet Third Coast Percussion and his score for Melina Matsoukas’ “Queen & Slim.”
But even the most hyper-productive minds in music are not immune to the creativity blackhole that is 2020. While Hynes kept busy during the first few weeks of quarantine finishing a few scoring projects he began pre-lockdown, he hasn’t been able...

Six years after the release of her debut Palo Alto, Gia Coppola returns with Mainstream, a media satire set in sunny Los Angeles about a couple of disaffected young people who decide to make it big on YouTube by creating viral content. It’s a logline with promise, but the execution leaves a great deal to be desired. Palo Alto was a stylish introduction for the director back in 2014; perhaps a touch dramatically stilted but there was enough cool in all those neon lights, humid Californian nights, and woozy synths to suggest the arrival of a new voice.
The years, however, have not been so kind to it. The story followed a group of affluent teens, most notably a precocious young woman (Emma Roberts) who has an affair with her soccer coach (James Franco), for whom she babysits. Franco wrote the short stories from which it was based but in...
