There’s a genuinely moving scene at the beginning of the new documentary by Lana Wilson (After Tiller, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields) revolving around a group of New York City-based psychics and their clients. A female doctor tells a psychic that she once attended to a 10-year-old girl who had been shot and killed 20 years earlier. The doctor, who’s no doubt seen her share of tragedies in the intervening years, is clearly still traumatized by the incident. She has one question for the psychic: “How is she?” she asks, her voice trembling.
We see the psychic’s response at the end of the film, in a moment that is no less affecting. Unfortunately, much of what occurs in between lacks the potency of those segments, coming across more like a tabloid-style reality television show. Receiving its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, Look Into My Eyes will likely...

Suri Cruise is stepping into the spotlight. In a July 26 interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Katie Holmes revealed her daughter, Suri, whom she shares with Tom Cruise, sings in the actor's new film, "Alone Together."
"I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her," Holmes said, sharing that Suri sings a cover of "Blue Moon" that appears in the opening credits of "Alone Together," a movie about two strangers forced to live together during the first weeks of Covid-19 lockdowns. Holmes wrote, directed, and stars in the film. "Blue Moon," originally written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934, was famously covered by Diane Keaton in the 2014 movie "And So It Goes," and Holmes added that Suri has a connection to the song because Keaton "met my daughter when she was a year old." It also doesn't hurt that Holmes has long been a fan of the "Baby Boom" actor.

For those who still scan liner notes in the streaming era, one credit on Neil Young’s new Archives Vol. II box — “Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young: Vocals” — will be both familiar and intriguing. The sight of those names on the collection, which dives into Young’s 1972–1976 work, is hardly a surprise; on and off, Young has worked with the other three men for more than 50 years. “I think I oughta say something about that song now,” Don Williams would tell concertgoers between the tunes he’d play while seated on a stool, guitar in hand. “I’ll think of something and say it later.” The joke being that country’s “Gentle Giant” would rarely get around to saying much, preferring instead to let the lyrics, and his warm, blanketing baritone do the talking, with his onstage motion mostly limited to moving effortlessly from one familiar hit to the next. Williams, who died in 2017 at 78, will be...

Billy Joel recently announced the first 2019 date of his Madison Square Garden residency, which will mark his 60th concert at the New York arena since his began his monthly residence there five years ago. For about 35 years now, Rob Reiner has been a director. For the first decade and a half, he was among the best in the business. Recently? Not so much. That being said, we’re focusing on the good today. Since he’s releasing a new film in the next few days, it feels apt to look at his best work. So, that’s what I’m doing. A full ranking of all of his movies is on the way, with special attention paid to his top features. I would argue that half of his output is good to very good, with five or six legitimately great works on his resume. This week, Reiner puts out his 20th feature, this time another political offering. It’s Shock and Awe, his treatise on the lies of the Bush Administration, namely in terms of going to war with Iraq. As per IMDb:...

Netflix sued Relativity Media on Friday, accusing the bankrupt mini-studio of violating an exclusivity agreement by providing five films to Amazon and Starz.
The streaming service also accuses Relativity of failing to provide the required number of releases for 2017. Netflix is seeking $12.6 million in damages for the exclusivity violations, plus $5 million for each film Relativity failed to deliver.
Relativity declared bankruptcy last month for the second time in three years, as it seeks a court-approved sale to UltraV Holdings. Since emerging from the first bankruptcy in 2016, Relativity founder Ryan Kavanaugh has been unable to raise fresh capital to produce new films.
Relativity continues to have an output agreement with Netflix, first signed in 2010, which Relativity considers to be “one of the crown jewel assets of the estate,” according to the filing. Under the deal, Relativity was originally supposed to provide 15 titles to Netflix in 2017. Following its first bankruptcy, the company revised that total,...

The actress celebrated the milestone by posting a picture of her kissing her beau on a bridge along with a heartfelt message in which she shared the story of how the couple came to be. According to her post, Hudson met Fujikawa when she was 23 and "enormously pregnant" with her first son Ryder, whom she shares with her ex husband Chris Robinson. But this wasn't the duo's only encounter. Hudson explained she's also best friends with Fujikawa's stepsisters Sara Foster and Erin Foster. At the age of just 26 or 27, writer/director Mickey Keating already has five feature films under his belt. These aren’t just homemade backyard projects shot with his buddies for $200, either; these are movies with major stars of the indie horror scene (Graham Skipper, Lauren Ashley Carter, Pat Healy, Larry Fu**ing Fessenden) and getting actual distribution through companies like Glass Eye Pix and IFC Midnight. While his previous films have shown major chops behind the camera, they’ve also all had an air of familiarity about them; Keating is a director who wears his influences proudly, and some of his past work has played more like him riffing on an existing piece than like something borne of his own interests and obsessions.
With his fifth feature, Psychopaths, Keating has really come into his own as a director. It is his most original, most ambitious, most audacious work to date...

Richard Stanley has always marched to the beat of a unique drum. He hasn’t made very many narrative films (Hardware, Dust Devil) since arriving at the turn of the ’90s, but he has always fascinated due to his quirky spirit and dedication to the odd and unusual. And so it goes that his documentary The Otherworld (2013) follows a path true to his nature, but is shot with a touching sense of humanity in its look at strange phenomena and the people who embrace it.
The Otherworld is Stanley’s journey to an area of southern France he dubs “The Zone”; a place that holds many mysteries, especially to the folks that inhabit the land tucked away in the Pyrenees Mountains. Montsegur, Bugarach, and especially Rennes-Le-Chateau are regions and townships filled with fascinating characters and mystique necessary to elevate the material beyond a gorgeous travelogue, which it most definitely is as well.

As Fear The Walking Dead’s third season draws to a close with much sound and fury, I can’t help but wonder what it all signifies. This season saw the rise and inevitable fall of Broke Jaw Ranch, and also saw inevitable destruction of the dam. We witnessed many, many deaths, most notably Travis, Ofelia, and the entire Otto family. And yet, despite all of this death and destruction, the Clark family somehow stayed intact. This isn’t to say they never found themselves in harm’s way, because just the opposite is true.

Some music acts deserve our full attention because of the legacy that spawned them. And so it goes that former Oasis lead vocalist Liam Gallagher delivers his much anticipated solo long player As You Were (Warner Brothers) on October 6th followed by short tour in selecti cities in North America in November. The songs -- "For What It's Worth," "Chinatown," and "Wall of Glass" (12 million streams!) -- are deservedly getting fantastic press from journalists and public alike. When the Manchaster-based anthem rock band disbanded, the Brothers Gallagher seemed destined for the scrap heap. Could the parts equal the power of the collective? Well, yes and no. Neither brother has released a solo album to rival either Definitely Maybe or (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. I certainly prefer Liam's sneering vocals over Noel's comfortable vocals and Noel's songwriting chops over his younger brother's tunes. Yes, together they were a force of nature.

The idea of “movie stars” has been on life support since the turn of the 21st Century — we live in a world where brands and intellectual property have become more important than people — but Hollywood as we know it will continue to hang on by a thread for as long as one man keeps running for its life. Tom Cruise isn’t just one of the greatest movie stars in the history of the medium, he might just be the last (depending on how Leonardo DiCaprio wants to play middle age). His face is known all over the world. His name is synonymous with big-screen entertainment. His incredible career has spanned more than 35 years, 45 roles, and hundreds upon hundreds of wild tabloid headlines. He’s been a Vietnam vet, a super-spy, a misogynistic self-help guru, a different super-spy, a samurai, a contract killer, another super-spy, a handsy bartender, a horny Chicago teenager,...

For me, the most interesting thing about horror maestro Tobe Hooper’s storied career is he takes chances. He always swings big; from his landmark second feature The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), to Lifeforce (1985), to even The Mangler (1995), he pushes the genre into the absurd through concept and execution, audiences be damned. It’s an admirable trait in a filmmaker, and one that’s on full display with Eaten Alive (1976), probably his most bizarre film to date. (Which is saying a lot.)
After a limited stateside release in October of ’76, EA was given a wide release in May of ’77 by Virgo International Pictures to theatres and drive-ins across the land. The start of the ever undulating arc of Hooper’s career, it was met with a resounding “Whaaaat?” by the public and critics alike. This was not the follow up to the cultural explosion that was Chainsaw people were expecting. And to be honest,...

Who knows but the proof will be in the pudding as they say.

Telling a story within a story within a story, the sci-fi comedy Zoom concerns a comic book artist, a novelist, and a film director who all have a hand in telling the story of the others life, despite living in different dimensions. One of the problems that comes from being a hardcore fan of films is that most of your time is spent trying to enjoy your passion despite the shackles of a medium that is plagued with repetition and paint-by-numbers efforts. If you see more than a dozen movies a year, it isn’t long before you’re trapped in the tedium of not simply knowing that the good guys are probably going to win, but who is going to turn out to be the double-crosser as soon as you see them, why and when the rom-com couple are going to have their second act “distancing” they have to overcome, and on and on.
This is why certain writers and directors can get a jump on popularity just off the back of putting something out that makes you sit up and notice that you have no idea what’s going to happen.

Indulging in a daydream or letting your imagination run amok is something we can all relate to on a fairly intimate level – but what if those thoughts sprung into life, effectively blurring the line between fact and fantasy?
That’s a question posed by Zoom, Pedro Morelli’s imminent feature that’s pitched as a “fast-paced, pop-art inspired, multi-plot contemporary comedy.” That’s quite the mouthful, but nevertheless, Morelli’s metafictional romp has garnered praise following its run on the festival circuit, including last year’s Tiff.

What if your imagination came to life? It’s the base question at the source of many sci-fi films, and most recently, the Alison Pill-led Zoom, which has received its first trailer. The story concerns a comic book artist, a novelist, and a film director who all have a hand in telling the story of the others life, despite living in different dimensions. Just when you think Richard and the gang are headed off a cliff, they not only avert disaster but also make progress.
