Three sailors on a day of shore leave in New York City look for fun and romance before their twenty-four hours are up. That summary to the beloved 1949 musical On The Town should be sung to the tune of “New York, New York,” the most famous song to come from this rollicking adaptation of the Broadway musical. There’s nary a dull moment as we watch Gene Kelly search desperately for Vera-Ellen, Frank Sinatra play a young and naive sailor (!) who tries to resist going up to Betty Garrett’s place but eventually gives in,...

Patrick Duffy says he'd like to participate in a Step by Step reunion movie and that it would be interesting to see how the Lambert family grew up. I just hope such a series spawns a serious topical drama that desperately adds a laugh track when ratings tank, giving the Tgif generation a The Bradys of their own.
You've seen me complain that the dark side of a golden age of television is a too-full DVR that make it challenging to keep up with all the good shows (as well as the guilty pleasures and hate watching) available. It also means that shows like Southland and Switched at Birth don't quite get the attention they deserve. I'm still looking for time to get caught up on Game of Thrones, much less time to get to that third episode of Top of the Lake.

Beauty and the beastly Hitchcock: a peerless study of sexual obsession
"Blondes make the best victims," Alfred Hitchcock once said. The Girl (BBC2) was Tippi Hedren, the blonde who ultimately refused to be his victim and, as this HBO film was largely based on Hedren's own interviews and Donald Spoto's Hitchcock biography, it is reasonable to assume it's a fairly accurate account.
Directed by Julian Jarrold and written by Gwyneth Hughes, it began with Hitchcock choosing Hedren, an unknown New York model, to star in two of his finest films, The Birds and Marnie. It ended with her frozen out of Hollywood for five years after a stand-off in which she refused to work for him and he refused to release her from her contract. As a study of Hitchcock's peculiar and demanding directorial methods, together with some eye-catching early 60s Hollywood period detail, The Girl was a class...

Lenora Crichlow has teased that her new art heist thriller Doors Open is like "Ocean's Eleven meets The Full Monty". The Being Human actress stars alongside Stephen Fry and Douglas Henshall in the ITV adaptation of Ian Rankin's book, which sees a bored millionaire plan to swap the contents of a gallery's warehouse with near-perfect forgeries.
Asked by Digital Spy to describe the show, Crichlow replied: "I thought it was quite funny, but I laugh quite easily. There's action, there's romance, but there is a lot of comedy." On working with a national treasure like Fry, she continued: "It was joyous. Stephen doesn't disappoint. "He's an absolutely lovely, lovely man - huge heart, brilliant mind, very warm, very friendly, very passionate about the project. "Everybody around (more)...

Standing In Another Man’S Grave Is First Rebus Novel In Five Years
It’s been five years since Ian Rankin wrote a Rebus novel. The character’s farewell in Exit Music left the door open for his return, and for many, I’m sure that the five year wait has been excruciating.
It might be hard to comprehend what a phenomenon the character is. During my time working on a report on the Scottish Parliamentary system, I visited Edinburgh, the character’s home, in 2003. Buses were completely covered with advertisements for The Falls or whatever the Rankin book of that year was and, as I fell in love with the place, it was actually kind of difficult not to imagine it as Rebus’ town.
I enjoyed the first seven or eight of the Rebus novels, but Rankin wrote them seemingly faster than I could read them and I lost the race.

Actor, comedian, raconteur and all around renaissance man Stephen Fry posted a tweet on his Twitter account earlier today teasing his followers with news that he and his once and future comedy partner Hugh Laurie are “cooking up a project together. We will be working again soon.” He apologized for having no other details, but said he would offer more when he can. Laurie is just coming off his epic run on Fox’s House, so it may surprise many people in the U.S. that Laurie is, in fact, British, and is still best known there for doing comedy, particularly with Fry. They starred together in the sketch comedy show A Bit of Fry & Laurie, which ran from 1989 to 1995 at various time on BBC1 and BBC2. The two men, along with Emma Thompson, met while all attended University of Cambridge. All three of them – and others from that generation...
