Exclusive: As his acclaimed comedic thriller Hit Man approaches its June 7 release on Netflix, filmmaker Richard Linklater may have identified his next project, as sources tell Deadline that he’s in development on a film called Blue Moon.
Taking its name from the 1934 ballad written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, the film follows Hart as he attempts to save face while celebrating his former partner Rodgers’ great success on the night of his musical Oklahoma!‘s Broadway opening. While it’s believed that this will end up being Linklater’s next film, that’s not entirely clear at present.
We’re told that Robert Kaplow — co-writer of Linklater’s 2008 film Me and Orson Welles — penned the script for Blue Moon and that Linklater will produce the project alongside his manager John Sloss.
A legendary American songwriting duo known for their contributions to musical theater, Rodgers and Hart collaborated between 1919 and the early 1940s,...

Ed Harris — recently seen starring alongside Kristen Stewart in “Love Lies Bleeding” — is getting back behind the camera to direct his own adaptation of Kim Zupan’s acclaimed novel “The Ploughmen.” Owen Teague, currently playing the lead in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” Nick Nolte and Bill Murray have come on board to star in the neo-noir crime thriller, which will go into production in Montana this Fall. Amy Madigan and Lily Harris are also set for the film.
“The Ploughmen” will mark Harris’ third feature as director after his Western “Appaloosa” and multi-Oscar nominated “Pollock.” Described being in the vein of “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River,” the film is set in the wilderness of Montana, where a strange friendship develops between a haunted young deputy sheriff and a notorious old murderer. John Gload (Nolte) is a killer so adept at his job that only now has he been apprehended.

Pretty Little Liars, the soapy teen drama based on the books by Sara Shepard, captivated audiences for seven seasons. The cliquey friend group found themselves being harassed by an anonymous “A” after the disappearance of their leader, snarky Alison Dilaurentis (Sasha Pieterse). But here was something the actor wished had disappeared with her character.

On April 7, Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison made headlines as the only notable show business figure to openly criticize Scott Rudin on social media after the latest expose of the super-producer’s alleged workplace abuse and toxicity was published last week.
While some activists and film enthusiasts applauded Ellison for speaking out, others found it hypocritical for someone who also has a fierce temper and has had explosive incidents of her own, according to four sources with direct knowledge of such behavior.
Ellison’s re-emergence on Twitter was the most public sign of life from the 35-year-old producer and Oracle heiress in more than a year. Three months ago she quietly returned to her home base of Los Angeles and resurfaced at her company after a mysterious self-imposed hiatus in Hawaii that began over the Christmas holidays in 2019.

“Mrs. America” is gaining back buzz ahead of the Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations, landing five nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards and being named one of the 10 best TV shows of the year by the American Film Institute. Cate Blanchett in “Mrs. America” is the type of contender that always used to win Emmys. Movie stars doing TV typically bodes well in the Best Limited Series/Movie Actress category, to which Kate Winslet (“Mildred Pierce”), Julianne Moore (“Game Change”) Frances McDormand (“Olive Kitteridge”) and Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”) can attest.

Netflix nabbed Richard Linklater’s “Apollo 10½,” an animated film set against the backdrop of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
The project, announced Thursday, coincides with the 51st anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11.
“Apollo 10 1/2” is inspired by Linklater’s childhood in Houston. Linklater directed from his own script, which attempts to interweave the astronaut and mission control view along with an excited child’s perspective, living near Nasa, but mostly watching it on television. The film centers around a kid’s fantasy about being plucked from his average life in suburbia to secretly train for a covert mission to the moon. The cast includes Jack Black, Zachary Levi and Glen Powell.

Here’s the series’ synopsis, per Netflix: “Stateless” is a powerful and timely series about four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention center in the middle of the Australian desert — an airline hostess (Yvonne Strahovski) on the run from a dangerous cult, an Afghan refugee (Fayssal Bazzi) and his family fleeing persecution, a young father (Jai Courtney) escaping a dead-end job, and a bureaucrat (Asher Keddie) running out of time to contain a national scandal.

Next month, Hulu will ring in Valentine’s Day with some counterprogramming. The streaming service will debut its original series “High Fidelity,” a gender-swapped reimagining of Nick Hornby’s novel of the same name. Previously, the book was adapted into a 2000 movie from Stephen Frears starring John Cusack. Zoë Kravitz stars as Rob Brooks, a music-obsessive record store owner in Brooklyn re-examining her previous romantic relationships to figure out what went wrong.
On the film front, the “Bridget Jones” trilogy, “Buffalo ’66,” “The Fugitive,” “Ghost” and “When Harry Met Sally” are among the new selections being offered in February. Releases from last year, like “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” and “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” are also making their way onto the platform.
New seasons of reality series like “The Voice” and “American Idol” will also be available to stream later in the month.

Four is the magic number for Renee Zellweger. She won her fourth Golden Globe on Sunday, Best Drama Actress for “Judy,” pushing her up to fourth place on the all-time film winners list.
Zellweger has now tied Tom Hanks and Shirley MacLaine with a quartet of film statuettes. The Oscar champ previously garnered Best Comedy/Musical Actress for “Nurse Betty” (2000) and “Chicago” (2002) and Best Supporting Actress for “Cold Mountain” (2003). A seven-time nominee, she’s had two nominations since then, for “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” (2004) and “Miss Potter” (2006).
The win also makes Zellweger one of three women who’ve won all three actress film prizes, joining Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.
Only three people have more film wins: Streep holds the record with seven, followed by Jack Nicholson with six and Rosalind Russell, who converted all five of her Globe bids into victories.

This is definitely something you definitely want to tell Nai Nai about: Awkwafina won Best Comedy/Musical Actress for “The Farewell” at Sunday’s Golden Globes, becoming the first Asian champ in the category.

Making Golden Globes history, Awkwafina has won the best actress in a musical or comedy award for her performance in “The Farewell” as Billi, a Chinese American woman who travels back to China with her family to say goodbye to her terminally ill grandmother (Shuzhen Zhao), who does not know she is sick.

She then thanked her family, everyone at A24 and the director Lulu Wang, “You gave me this chance — the chance of a lifetime.”
It’s the first time a performer of Asian descent has won a lead actress Golden Globe Award for a film. Last year, Sandra Oh became the first Asian woman since 1980 to win best actress in a TV drama for BBC America’s “Killing Eve.”
Backstage, Awkwafina commented on the significance of her win.

Here’s one thing to remember about the Golden Globes: It only has 87 voters, or slightly more than 1% as many as the Oscars do. And those 87 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association bring with them a variety of competing agendas, which makes predicting what they’ll do maddening at times. Here’s what we think will happen on Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton across all the film and TV categories.

Leonardo DiCaprio is on a low-key streak at the Golden Globes. The three-time champ has won on his last two nominations and could make it three next month with “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in Best Comedy/Musical Actor. That would make him tied in fourth place for most film wins, which is something Rick Dalton could only dream of.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios I hear is adapting Kathy Hepinstall’s novel The Book of Polly into a feature titled Life of Polly, which the author will co-write with George Sledge.
Ginger Sledge of Zenzero Pictures and Jackson Pictures’ Matt Jackson (Molly’s Game) are set to produce the project. Jackson Pictures’ Joanne Lee will executive produce.
The book and upcoming feature is a charming Southern coming-of-age story about a young girl, Willow Havens, who worries that her 68-year-old, chain-smoking, margarita-blending mother, Polly, will die from cancer before Polly unearths the secrets of her mother’s past – thus losing one of the remaining links to a key piece of her identity.
In the book, Polly was in her late 50s when Willow was born. Willow knows she’s here by accident, a late-life afterthought. Willow’s father died before she was born, amd her much older brother and...

Netflix ran away with the most Golden Globe nominations Monday as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association unveiled nominees for its 77th awards. The streamer dominated with 34 total noms across film and TV — a perfect 17 apiece.
Key noms included four Best Picture hopefuls in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story (a film-best six overall), Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman (five) and Fernando Meirelles’ The Two Popes (four) in the Drama category, as well as Dolemite Is My Name (two) in the Comedy/Musical category.
Sony Pictures Releasing was second among film distributors with eight noms, spread among Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (five), Little Women (two) and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (one).
On the TV side, Netflix’s 17 noms topped a list that was followed closely by HBO with 15. Two other streamers, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, were next with five apiece. No broadcast networks made the cut today.

It’s always a fun ritual to peruse the nominations for the Golden Globes, because you’re probably going to see a handful of eyebrow-raisers and maybe a jaw-dropper, the sort of “Oh, did they actually do that?” choices that make the Golden Globes the Golden Globes. That’s the theory, at any rate. But it may be an outmoded theory. This year, looking over the various nominees in the movie categories (I don’t pretend to keep up on television enough to earn a judgment call on those rosters), what you see in every slate, every choice, every quirk is a wall-to-wall-carpeting job of unimpeachably tasteful and hard-to-knock conventional wisdom. If you want to play Name That Ringer, it’s going to be a very short game.
But let’s play. Okay, I spotted one! In the Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy category, what is Cate Blanchett doing there?...

Most of Monday morning’s Globe nominations didn’t come as a big surprise. “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” have been ruling awards season – their many nominations were expected. But Globe wins don’t necessarily translate to Oscar gold — about half of best pic wins have been in sync with the Academy Awards since the Globes began 77 years ago.
Here are six things to note about this year’s Golden Globe film nominations:
1. Netflix dominates with 17 nominations (and that’s just in film). “Marriage Story” and “The Irishman” have been ruling awards season, but could all this love for the streamer backfire? Will anti-streamer Academy members shun Netflix in favor of traditional studio fare at the Oscars? Despite vastly different voter bases, the Globes may serve as a good way to read the temperature on how industry insiders are viewing Netflix this awards season.

But you might also be curious to see how other outlets besides Netflix fared as well, including how many spots individual movies and shows collected.

A year after her “Crazy Rich Asians” co-star Constance Wu made the cut, Awkwafina received a Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globe nomination on Monday, becoming just the sixth actress of Asian descent to be shortlisted in the category.
The rapper/actress joins Wu, Hailee Steinfeld (2016’s “The Edge of Seventeen”), who’s of Filipino descent, Yvonne Elliman (1973’s “Jesus Christ Superstar”), Miyoshi Umeki (1961’s “Flower Drum Song”) and Machiko Kyo (“1956’s “The Teahouse of the August Moon”).
Wu was in contention for second straight nomination with “Hustlers” and was predicted to get one in our odds, but she was snubbed in favor of Ana de Armas (“Knives Out”), Cate Blanchett, Beanie Feldstein (“Booksmart”) and Emma Thompson (“Late Night”). Had Wu gotten in, it would’ve marked the second time in Globes history with two Asian actors in the same category; the first time occurred when Cambodian doctor-turned-actor Haing S. Ngor...

We know the 90-member Hollywood Foreign Press — an old, white, and hopelessly coddled bunch — are idiosyncratic at best. The Golden Globes voters lean mainstream with their nominations, love to welcome their favorite celebs at the Beverly Hilton, and provide extra slots to play with in the Comedy or Musical categories. That’s why they always throw a few curves, like Cate Blanchett for Best Comedy Actress for long-forgotten “Where’d You Go Bernadette?,” one of several surprises from this morning’s nominations.
And distributors can seek advantages by pushing films into categories they are more likely to win, slotting dramedy “Marriage Story” and musical “Judy” into drama while leaving room in the comedy/musical categories for “Jojo Rabbit,” “Rocketman,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
Last year, Queen bio-musical “Bohemian Rhapsody” took home Globes for Best Motion Picture Drama and Drama Actor (which repeated at the Oscars), while “Green Book...

“Booksmart” star Beanie Feldstein received a Golden Globes nomination for her role in Olivia Wilde’s film on Monday — and she got to share that joy with best friends Kaitlyn Dever and Ben Platt, who were also nominated in other categories for different projects.
“I was in my bed in my apartment in New York, and I had been screaming because I had seen Kaitlyn’s name come up — I wasn’t watching, I was just looking at Twitter — I screamed so loud my roommate came in asking if I was okay,” Feldstein told TheWrap. “Then I FaceTimed her — I am so over the moon for her and her performance is one of the most exciting things to exist, and for her to be recognized… it’s for her whole year that she’s having. I would be nowhere without her, I was just over the moon.”
She added: “Then...
