This 2013 Supernatural Horror Delivers an Inventive Ghost Story With Unpredictable Twists
Image
In 2013, Haunter, a Canadian supernatural horror directed by Vincenzo Nataliand starring Abigail Breslin and Stephen McHattie, went relatively unnoticed — quite undeservedly so. Partly, it didn't get much attention since, after its premiere at the SXSW film festival, it only got a limited release. The other reason might be that by 2013 the audience seemed to move on from ghosts altogether, as the supernatural genre was mostly preoccupied with demons and mythical entities.

A Netflix Horror Series Had The Same Twist As Presence (And Did It So Much Better)
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Presence" and Mike Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House."

Breaking through to the other side and witnessing things from a ghostly plane isn't new for the horror genre. Films like "Haunter," "The Others," and "The Sixth Sense," to name a few, have all provided viewers a glimpse into the afterlife. Director Steven Soderbergh's new horror film "Presence" (check out our review here) offers a different kind of supernatural experience, as we view the entire story from a first-person paranormal perspective, featuring a ghost that only reveals itself after a death in the final act.

Early in "Presence," a medium visiting the house explains that the afterlife doesn't follow the same rules of time as ours, and the spirit is unaware of who they are or when they exist. This sets up the twist that the ghost is, in fact, Tyler Payne (Eddy Maday...

Why Cube's Director Doesn't Want An American Remake Of The Sci-Fi Cult Classic
Image
Vincenzo Natali's 1997 film "Cube" takes place entirely inside a strange, unexplained high-tech ... prison ... of some sort. It is constructed of cube-shaped cells with hatches on all four walls, the floor, and the ceiling. Each hatch leads into an identical cell, only distinguished by its colored lights and a series of cryptic numbers etched into the doorways. Random cells throughout the structure are armed with deadly booby-traps. There are no bathrooms, no food, and no water. Six strangers find each other in this prison wearing identical jumpsuits, unsure how they arrived there or why they have been imprisoned. They slowly begin to decipher the numbers to determine which rooms have traps and which ones do not. Naturally, they all slowly begin to go mentally deteriorate.

"Cube" was produced for a modest $350,000 (Canadian), but its intriguing "Twilight Zone" premise and taut direction allowed it to catch on as a cult hit.

Elijah Wood’s ‘Bookworm’ to Open Fantasia Fest
Image
The 2024 Fantasia Film Festival will open with a world premiere for Bookworm, the Elijah Wood and Nell Fisher starrer from New Zealand filmmaker Ant Timpson.

The indie reteams Wood with Come to Daddy director Timpson and saw the Lord of the Rings actor return to New Zealand for production. In Bookworm, Fisher plays a 12-year-old girl whose life is turned upside down when her long-absent American magician father (Wood) comes to look after her, and together they take an ill-advised camping trip into the rugged New Zealand wilderness to find a mythological beast that leads to increasingly absurd and treacherous adventures.

Among other new titles added to the lineup for Fantasia’s 28th edition are world bows for Alexander J. Farrell’s The Beast Within, starring Kit Harrington; Isaac Ezban’s dystopian coming-of-age tale Parvulos; and Vivieno Caldinelli’s Scared Shitless, starring Steven Ogg and Daniel Doheny.

Ash's Best Pokmon in the Kanto Indigo League
Image
Ash's Kanto team from the Indigo League season was young and inexperienced but grew significantly over 80-plus episodes. Primeape evolved from Mankey during a heated battle with Team Rocket, showcasing its strength and explosive personality. Despite not being the strongest, Butterfree, Pidgeot, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charizard all played essential roles in key battles.

Ash Ketchum's legacy in the Pokmon anime began in the debut Indigo League season, with the young trainer gathering an iconic team of allies. The aspiring Pokmon Master and Kanto Champion extensively traveled alongside Misty, Brock, and his team, training through his experiences with Gym Leaders, rivals, and League battles.

When looking at what several of his Pokmon would become later, Ash's team was young and comparatively inexperienced during the first anime season. Even so, their growth over the 80-plus episodes was memorable. Between his stalwart Pikachu companion and Charizard packed with potential, Ash's Kanto Pokmon had...

Splice: Why The Sci-Fi Horror Movie's Sequel Never Happened
Image
Director Vincenzo Natali never made a sequel to the 2009 movie Splice, despite the open ending leaving room for one. He prioritizes storytelling over intentionally setting up sequels, speaking to his artistic merits. Natali's previous experience with the film Cube and its sequels influenced his decision not to allow a sequel to be made without his involvement. He values protecting the integrity of his work and was likely uninterested in the ideas that surfaced for Splice 2. Although a Splice sequel is unlikely, Natali has continued to make sci-fi horror movies, including Haunter, In the Tall Grass, 388 Arletta Avenue, and Come True, each offering its own unique take on the genre. Come True, in particular, fills the void for fans of dark and satisfying storytelling.

The 2009 sci-fi horror movie Splice left the perfect opening for a sequel, but despite seeming somewhat interested in continuing the story, director Vincenzo Natali never brought Splice 2 to fruition.

5 Actors Considered For Roles In The Departed
Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Martin Scorsese joked in his Oscar acceptance speech for Best Director that The Departed was his first movie with a plot. The director’s previous classics, like Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, had effectively been sprawling character studies more concerned with the people than the events surrounding them, but in helming an English-language remake of the Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs, Scorsese had to juggle a real plot.

Related: The Departed: Every Major Performance, Ranked

While Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jack Nicholson ended up being the perfect stars for this movie, they weren’t the first ones considered. There are unsubstantiated rumors that Al Pacino was considered to play Frank Costello, RZA turned down the role of Trooper Brown, and Mel Gibson rejected an offer to play Ellerby because he was preparing to direct Apocalypto.

Tony Leung and Andy Lau Reunite 18 Years After Infernal Affairs Trilogy for Goldfinger
In 2002, Andy Lau and Tony Leung reunited for action crime feature Infernal Affairs, an instant hit which not only spawned two back-to-back sequels the following year, but also sparked the interest of Martin Scorsese, who remade it for his Best Picture-winning The Departed. Now, the Hong Kong legends are reuniting once again, 18 years after the third Infernal Affairs film, for a new thriller set in the 1980s.

They will both star in Goldfinger, which has no relation to 007 nor ska, but does come from Infernal Affairs writer Felix Chong, who scripts and directs. Variety reports the $30.8 million project will also star Simon Yam, Philip Keung, Alex Fong Chung-sun, Charlene Choi, Chin Ka-lok, and Carlos Chan. Inspired by the story of the Hong Kong conglomerate Carrian Group, who was embroiled in a scandal, check out the synopsis below.

Set in the 1980s, the film depicts cut-throat machinations between Hong Kong’s...

Film Review: The Call (2020) by Lee Chung-hyun
Image
In the annals of genre cinema, time-travel has been a relatively common occurrence from everything like “Event Horizon” and “Haunter” to “Timecrimes” and “Army of Darkness,” exploring outlandish concepts in a fairly common-place setting. Director Lee Chung-hyun is the latest to tackle this concept, as he uses it for his feature-film debut, the chilling new thriller “The Call” now available on Netflix.

Heading out to the countryside, a lost phone causes Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) to begin looking for an answer to what happened. Eventually, she manages to reach Young-sook (Jun Jong-seo), a girl who claims to have lived in the same house twenty years earlier. Communicating over the phone, they begin to talk to each other about what happened over the years. When it transpires that something in the past affects the future timelines of each other, the resulting changes begin to affect the relationship they have, eventually resulting in...

Stephen King and Joe Hill's In the Tall Grass Heads to Netflix
While no Netflix films will be competing at the Cannes Film Festival this year, the streaming service did already close a deal for a new film as the festival kicks off. Netflix has closed a deal to obtain the rights to the novella In the Tall Grass, written by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill, with James Marsden in talks to star with Vincenzo Natali adapting the novella and directing. While no release date has been given yet, production is slated to begin later this summer in Toronto, so it's possible that it could be ready for release on Netflix next year.

In the Tall Grass was first published in two parts, in the June/July 2012 edition of Esquire and then in the August 2012 edition of the magazine, which marked the second father and son collaboration between King and Hill since the 2009 novella Throttle. In the Tall Grass centers on Cal and Becky Demuth,...

Abigail Breslin Turns the Tables in Final Girl
Abigail Breslin is sure turning into a genre actress lately. It seems like after Zombieland, I’ve seen her in more & more genre films like Haunter, The Call and Maggie. She is also going to appear on Fox’s upcoming genre television show, “Scream Queens”.

Final Girl is a film that I believe I saw a promo trailer earlier this year or maybe even last year and thought it looked interesting. The story also comes from Stephen Scarlata, who was one of the producers of the wonderful documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune. He is also one of the co-writers of the upcoming VHS Horror Board Game film, Beyond the Gates.

Los Angeles, CA – Renowned photographer to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Tyler Shields will captivate audiences with his debut feature film, the “sardonic, smart, stylized, thriller” (Dennis Dermody, Paper), Final Girl. Vincenzo Natali Shares Concept Art For His 'Predator,' 'It,' and 'Neuromancer' Movies That Never Happened
There are countless filmmakers who join Twitter just to promote their next project. So far that hasn't been the case with Vincenzo Natali. The director of Cube, Nothing, Splice, and Haunter recently joined Twitter, but he's not just drumming up promo for new episodes of Hannibal (he's a regular director on the series), he's actually sharing details on a ton of his past movies that never came to be. Natali has been attached to a handful of big projects in the decades since Cube blew people's minds, perhaps most notably an adaptation of the seminal cyberpunk book Neuromancer, but he's tried to get even more movies off the ground that most never even knew were a possibility. He's shared concept art for Predator, Stephen King's It, an...

Scream Queens Trailer Piles On The Self-Parody
Fox is betting big on Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk this fall with the American Horror Story creators’ campy horror-comedy Scream Queens, and now that the first full trailer for the anthology series has been released, it’s easy to see why – seemingly every teen idol this side of Disney pops up in the preview.

Emma Roberts (Unfabulous), The Nine Lives of Chloe King‘s Skyler Samuels, Glee‘s Lea Michele and Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP) are seemingly taking on the biggest roles in a cast that also boasts Abigail Breslin, Nasim Pedrad, Oliver Hudson, Billie Lourd, Diego Boneta, Glen Powell, Lucien Laviscount, Niecy Nash, Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande. Oh – and original Scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis is on hand to provide the series’ real horror credentials (unless you want to count Breslin’s Zombieland and Haunter, which is entirely valid).

Unfortunately, the uneven tone displayed by this...

Scream Queens Lives Up To Its Name In New Trailer
Given that Scream Queens hails from Ryan Murphy, the creator of Glee and American Horror Story, it’s not that surprising that the Fox series will find a lot of teen characters doing their damnedest to break decibel records.

In the brief trailer for the horror-comedy, there’s a whole lot of screaming, yelling and hammy line-reading, all of which was expected from the show, which follows a college campus reeling from a series of grisly murders committed by a terrifying individual in a devil mask.

Emma Roberts stars as the head of sorority Kkt, which finds itself at the center of the chaos as various sorority girls wind up targets of the killer. The all-star lineup of celebs includes (in a deliciously meta bit of stunt casting) original Scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele (of Glee), Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee), Abigail Breslin (Haunter), Ariana Grande (Victorious...

Hannibal Season 3 Directors Include Neil Marshall & Vincenzo Natali, Four Episode Titles Revealed
Neil Marshall and Vincenzo Natali: horror hounds know the former for his directing of The Descent, Dog Soldiers, Doomsday, and more, while the latter brought Splice, Haunter, Cube, and the "U is for Utopia" segment of ABCs of Death 2 to life on the big screen. These two creative horror genre minds bring their skills to the always dangerous dinner table of NBC's Hannibal, as showrunner Bryan Fuller has revealed Marshall and Natali directed select episodes of the third season. Also unveiled are the titles of four season three episodes, one of which should sound very familiar to fans of Thomas Harris' 1981 novel and the 2002 (second) film adaptation of the same name.

On his Twitter page, Fuller announced that Vincenzo Natali directed the first three episodes of Hannibal Season 3, respectively titled "Antipasto", "Primavera", and "Secondo." Fuller then revealed that Neil Marshall helmed "The Great Red Dragon", the eighth episode of season three.

Fantastic, Nsfw Look at ABCs Of Death 2! [Trailer]
The bad thing with anthology films is that the quality can vary from short to short but that also happens to be the good thing about anthology films because if something is really terrible, it'll be over in just a few minutes and a new possible bit of awesome starts. That was certainly the case with the first ABCs of Death and that's likely also going to be true of the follow-up but judging from the opening of the trailer, the sequel is already looking like all sorts of awesome.

The line-up of directors this time around is nothing to scoff about and includes the Twisted Twins (Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary), world renowned animator Bill Plympton (Cheatin'), Vincenzo Natali (Haunter, Splice, Cube), E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills), [Continued ...]...

Trailer: Stephen McHattie Enters the Wild FX-Heavy World of Hellmouth!
The trailer for John Geddes' Hellmouth made its debut via Twitch this morning and I can honestly say I did not anticipate it having such an FX-heavy, '50-inspired vibe.

A nod to classic horror and fantasy, the film stars Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, Haunter) as Charlie Baker, a dying grave keeper who's forced to take one final job. Baker goes on a dark descent through gothic landscapes, demonic worlds and medieval realms as he journeys to discover the secret behind a mysterious cemetery.

‘Haunter’ DVD Review
Stars: Abigail Breslin, Stephen McHattie, Peter Outerbridge, Michelle Nolden, Peter DaCunha, Samantha Weinstein, Eleanor Zichy, David Hewlett, Sarah Manninen | Written by Brian King, Matthew Brian King | Directed by Vincenzo Natali

Often it feels like there are not enough ghost stories based horror films these days, but then when you think about it we’ve had Insidious, Sinister and The Conjuring just to name a few. I’m not sure why I feel there needs to be more but this could be a sign that things need to be shaken up a bit. Saying that though I’ll be reviewing Soulmate soon which is a good old-fashioned ghost story that gets so much right, so most importantly these films just need to be good. Haunter looks to add a little something different to the mix with the question, do ghosts realise they are actually dead?

To her parents Lisa (Breslin) is...

Michael Douglas, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Paul Rudd, Corey Stoll, Mark Knapton, and Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man (2015)
More New Writers Tackle Ant-Man Screenplay
Michael Douglas, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Paul Rudd, Corey Stoll, Mark Knapton, and Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man (2015)
It has a cast that includes Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, but Ant-Man apparently still doesn't have a screenplay that Marvel Studios are happy with. Following the departure of Edgar Wright over creative differences, and a subsequent pass by Adam McKay, the latest draft has been taken on by the writing team of Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. The pair landed themselves on the buzzy Black List for 2010, right after graduating from Nyu, with the screenplay for their still un-produced drama Die In A Gunfight. They've since had their horror pic Haunt (not to be confused with Vincenzo Natali's Haunter) brought to the screen with Harrison Gilbertson in the lead, and they've also been at work on Jonathan Levine's Legend and the developing Sabrina The Teenage Witch reboot.Too many cooks, or necessary triage? Whatever's going on, Marvel and new director Peyton Reed are clearly finding Ant-Man a particularly tough nut to crack.

Abigail Breslin at an event for New Year's Eve (2011)
Abigail Breslin's 'Final Girl' Gets A New Trailer
Abigail Breslin at an event for New Year's Eve (2011)
If you were to check Abigail Breslin’s IMDb page, you would see that the young actress has spent a good bit of time in genre films. She has Zombieland, The Call, Haunter, and the upcoming Maggie all on her resume. You will also find a movie named Final Girl which filmed in 2012 and has been in post-production since March of 2013. It actually received an odd trailer that month, where director Tyler Shields showed the entire film in 1 minute. That was the last we had seen of it.

That was until today. We now have a new, more traditional, trailer for this long gestating project and I have to say it has piqued my interest quite a bit.

Synopsis:

A psychological thriller about a beautiful teen girl new to town who is lured out to the woods by a group of senior boys to be the victim in their final initiation.

As far as modern day scream queens go, Ginger Snaps/Freddy vs. Jason star Katharine Isabelle is right up there at the top of the list, most recently making an impression on NBC's "Hannibal." Up next, she finds herself the victim of a horrifying home invasion in Torment, which has just been dated for Stateside release.

After playing at last October's Screamfest Horror Film Festival, Torment has been acquired by Phase 4 Films and will be given a VOD release on June 10th. Check out the creepy trailer below, which makes this one look like a home invasion flick worth being excited about!

Directed by Jordan Baker, the flick also stars Stephen McHattie, Robin Dunne (“Sanctuary”) and Peter DaCunha (Haunter).

Synopsis

When a family arrives at their remote cabin for a quiet getaway, they find their home vandalized, as the arrival of four psychotic intruders sets the stage for a harrowing life-or-death struggle.

"Haunter" Fades Into The Background
The horror film Haunter is not an origin story of that gaseous purple Pokemon but another take on the haunted house trope. Lisa (Abigail Breslin, reprising the role of emo teen that she started in August: Osage County) finds herself trapped in a Groundhog Day nightmare, reliving the same dreary 1980s Sunday whilst being the only one of her family to even notice that they’re trapped in a time loop. In fact, she’s so hyper-conscious of the daily repetitions that she becomes alarmed when certain things become altered.

Haunter review not scary enough to put the frighteners on
The ghost of a serial killer inhabits Abigail Breslin in this supernatural nail-biter, but it's too derivative

Abigail Breslin takes the lead in this serviceable supernatural horror thriller as 15-year-old Lisa, the only one aware that she and her family are trapped in a monotonous Groundhog Day of missing laundry, macaroni cheese and Murder She Wrote. After realising there's a ghost in the house, or rather quite a few, she sets about solving the mystery of her family's time loop, and ends up taking on the evil spirit of a serial killer who once lived there. He is the Haunter (an unnerving Stephen McHattie), who can possess the living. But who is living and who is dead? Director Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) explores some intriguing ideas but the pace lags, and the film itself becomes inhabited by the presence of The Amityville Horror, The Shining and The Others, to name a few.

Ginger Snaps Team Comes Together for A Christmas Horror Story Anthology
There are a few Christmas, or holiday, themed horror anthologies in the works. Kevin Smith is tinkering around with one about Krampus, as previously reported. Now, producers Steven Hoban and Mark Smith (Ginger Snaps, Haunter, Splice). Hoban will direct a segment, as will Grant Harvey of Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning and Brett Sullivan (Orphan Black). Doug Taylor, Sarah Larsen, James Kee and Pascal Trottier are scripting four "interweaving tales." It sounds like we're going to get the Trick 'r Treat treatment applied to Christmas...
