Dounia et la princesse d'Alep

"Dounia and the princess of Aleppo" is a fantastic tribute to Aleppo, Syria and its inhabitants by Aleppo-born artist Marya Zarif. It is a must-see to understand Syria but also the whole Middle-East. The film is subtle, deep and poetic. It contains beautiful references to Arabic music, history, arts and culture, and depicts in detail the daily life of the people before the beginning of the revolution and the war. This movie allows people to get a emotional impression of Aleppo, as if they were walking in its narrow streets full of jasmine. It is also a great way to start some deep conversations with children regarding the reality of our contemporary world where civilians have to face war, violence, displacement and migration.

Dounia and the princess of Aleppo is the sort of movie to juxtapose a child-like sense of wonder and tropes (like a child narrator) with the grimness of the real world. It is specifically about the Syria Civil War. And how it impacted the people of Aleppo.

The animation is a pleasant 2D. It has a rather white-leaning palette, which reflects the star and moon visual and narrative motifs. The character designs are mostly pleasant looking, though I'm iffy about the teeth.

Besides the nocturnal motifs, the movie also has a consistent bird motif, which exemplifies the dignity of the main character and her search for freedom and safety.

A solid recommendation.

This is one of the most impactful films I've watched, especially with everything going on around the world at this time.

By showing the devastations of war through the eyes of a child, it made me more aware of these issues and my appreciation of everything I've been blessed with - especially my parents and their sacrifices.

I found the visuals beautiful, voice acting spot on, and appreciated the cultural traditions shown through the foods, poetry, and music.

Whether you want to learn more about what these experiences are like for a family, or simply improve your own appreciation for life, I think this is a must watch for anyone - from any country or any race.

An amazing movie for all ages about love, the only way to go through life, dealing and growing from all the experiences we face... You can enjoy this beautifully laid out movie or go deeper and connect it with your own experience... as this story is about life and love which we all relate to.

It s your choice to stay in the shallows or explore the depth of your own life.

Dounia s story mirrors situations thrown at us and to which we can react to by taking responsibility, being hopeful and creative to flip it in a positive way and grow or, play the victim.

It takes courage to find the silver lining, it takes courage to share a personal experience on the big screen giving us all a chance to relate and grow.
