Bret Easton Ellis Thinks the ‘American Psycho’ Reboot with Luca Guadagnino and Austin Butler Is ‘Fake News’
Image
Author Bret Easton Ellis says the announced “American Psycho” reimagining isn’t real.

Ellis said during his eponymous podcast that announced remake’s director Luca Guadagnino and rumored lead actor Austin Butler are not contracted for the feature. Regardless, Ellis confirmed that he is in no way involved in the potential reboot, despite writing the novel it will be adapted from.

“American Psycho” was first brought to the screen in 2000 with Mary Harron co-writing and directing; Christian Bale starred. Guadagnino’s version, which is being billed as an entirely new adaptation of Ellis’ book, was announced in 2024 as a Lionsgate film with Scott Z. Burns adapting. Ellis says Burns does not have a deal in place either.

Jacob Elordi was first rumored to be leading “American Psycho” prior to fellow Elvis-portrayer Butler being announced. Elordi has been a favorite of author Ellis’ ever since his “Oh, Canada” casting. Butler was...

Luca Guadagnino Eyeing Austin Butler for ‘American Psycho’ — Report
Image
Austin Butler is looking to get a little crazy in Luca Guadagnino’s “American Psycho” remake.

Butler, who has made his career working with auteurs such as Baz Luhrmann, Denis Villeneuve, Ari Aster, Darren Aronofsky, and Jeff Nichols, might have his Guadagnino debut with the upcoming feature. Variety reported that Butler is in talks to star as the iconic Patrick Bateman in Guadagnino’s reimagining of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel.

IndieWire has learned that there are no casting deals are in place, however.

The Lionsgate film was announced earlier this year, with Scott Z. Burns adapting the novel for the screen.

Christian Bale led the original 2000 film alongside Guadagnino’s frequent collaborator Chloë Sevigny; Mary Harron co-wrote and directed the classic feature. Guadagnino’s version will not be a remake of Harron’s but rather a new adaptation of Ellis’ book.

Butler has a busy slate, with upcoming features also...

Image
Has Lindsay Lohan found her niche in heartwarming holiday movies over the last few years? From a roaring debut in The Parent Trap at age 11 to her iconic status in 2004's Mean Girls, the actor was a major up-and-comer until a sustained tumultuous period in Lohan's personal life overshadowed any acting work. However, things started looking up when she secured the lead role in Falling for Christmas, a romantic comedy produced for Netflix in 2022.

Next came Irish Wish, released just before St. Patrick's Day this year, and on 27 November, her third festive Netflix movie arrived, Our Little Secret. In a sound strategic move, Lohan is regaining relevance from the Mean Girl generation and attracting a whole new audience through the modern vessel of Netflix movies.

Luca Guadagnino in Talks to Direct ‘American Psycho’ Adaptation
Image
Thanks to Luca Guadagnino, Patrick Bateman will be back.

The auteur is in final negotiations with Lionsgate for a new interpretation of iconic novel “American Psycho,” the studio announced Friday, October 18. The Bret Easton Ellis book was first brought to the screen in 2000. Christian Bale led the original film alongside Guadagnino’s frequent collaborator Chloë Sevigny.

Scott Z. Burns will adapt Ellis’ novel. Rather than a remake of the 2000 feature, Burns’ screenplay will be a new adaptation of the IP. Mary Harron directed the original film from a screenplay by Harron and Guinevere Turner.

Guadagnino’s iteration of “American Psycho” will be produced by Frenesy Films and executive produced by Pressman Film’s Sam Pressman, the son of Edward R. Pressman, who was a producer of the first adaptation.

“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said. “Luca is a brilliant artist,...

This Punk Band Used Its Swan Song to Launch a Filmmaking Career
Image
Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: After going on a hike and getting “really stoned,” Off! guitarist Dimitri Coats approached his friend and bandmate Keith Morris with a tall order: He wanted to make a film that featured the band… with the singer’s erectile dysfunction as the inciting incident. “I was a little worried (Keith) wouldn’t go for it,” Coats told IndieWire.

Morris, the legendary dreadlocked former lead man for The Circle Jerks, detailed his struggle with diabetes in in his 2016 autobiography “My Damage.” And, as he previously disclosed to Coats, erectile dysfunction (now resolved) was an early warning sign. In the film Coats envisioned, Morris never followed his musical dreams and became a defeated elderly porno store clerk who is inspired by a bout of erectile dysfunction to visit a “boner doctor”.

This leads to a hallucinogenic “antidote” created by aliens with the help of albino bees,...

Fifty Shades Of Greys Original Movie Was Almost Way Different From The Controversial $569M Hit
Image
Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation could have been weirder, as it originated from Twilight fan fiction. Despite success at the box office, movies faced criticism for acting and lack of sex appeal. American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis campaigned to adapt the film and proposed casting ideas.

Although 2015s Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation was divisive, the movie version of El Jamess bestselling novel could have been much weirder. Originally written as Twilight fan fiction, the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy became a publishing sensation in 2011. The erotic romance trilogy followed Ana Steele, an inexperienced student, as she embarked on a steamy affair with her brooding billionaire boss, Christian Grey. Fifty Shades of Greys movie adaptations werent quite as explicit as the source novel series, but they still courted controversy when the movies landed on cinema screens. Fifty Shades of Grey was released in 2015.

The adaptation was a huge hit,...

Mubi’s July 2024 Lineup Features Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Paul Schrader, Kit Zauhar, Richard Linklater & More
Image
Mubi has unveiled next month’s streaming lineup, including Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s five-part series Penance, Kit Zauhar’s new release This Closeness along with her debut feature Actual People, a pair of films by Paul Schrader, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, Luke Lorentzen’s stellar documentary A Still Small Voice, Alex Ross Perry’s Queen of Earth, and more.

In his review of This Closeness earlier this month, Ethan Vestby said, “The film is made with a great deal of formal control, and even though the low stakes and small scale will have it be compared to mumblecore films, this is far sleeker than the average Joe Swanberg joint of yesteryear: long takes, a fixed camera, strategic employment of close-ups, and a rich soundscape (the audio emanating from outside the window of traffic and birdsong is instantly identifiable to anyone living in a city).”

Am I Ok? (Stephanie Allyne and Tig Notaro)

A romantic comedy that functions best as a fable of friendship and self-reflection, Am I Ok? is the kind of lightweight, amiable movie that just barely earns the emotional beats at the heart of its story. Set in Los Angeles, it follows the converging life events of two best friends, Lucy (Dakota Johnson) and Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), soul sisters with opposite personalities who tell each other everything—except for the big secrets they’ve been harboring from each other. How they respond to hearing them fuels Stephanie Allyne and Tig Notaro’s gentle and wobbly feature debut. – Jake K-s. (full review)

Why So Many Cannes Auteurs Are Turning the Camera Back on Themselves
Image
These auteurs are ready for their close-up.

When Quentin Dupieux’s comedy about an ill-fated film set, “The Second Act,” opened the Cannes Film Festival May 14, it will be just one of several movies about filmmaking and filmmakers to touch down on the Croisette. After all, directors Christophe Honoré, Paul Schrader and Josh Mond are among the other prominent filmmakers who are ready to premiere semi-autobiographical stories.

Honoré’s in-competition comedy, “Marcello Mio,” casts Chiara Mastroianni as a version of herself who — after a director compares her to her late father, Marcello Mastroianni — dresses in drag and takes on his identity. Schrader’s in-competition drama, “Oh, Canada,” focuses on a documentary filmmaker (Richard Gere) telling his life story in a doc. Mond’s drama “It Doesn’t Matter” follows two friends chronicling their lives on video. Leos Carax’s 40-minute “C’est pas moi” is partly a self-portrait, with footage from his films and life.

June on the Criterion Channel Includes Paul Schrader, Jean Grémillon, Synth Soundtracks & More
Image
Oh, Canada debuting this week on the Croisette is high time to see lesser-seen Schrader on the Criterion Channel, who’ll debut an 11-title series including the likes of Touch, The Canyons, and Patty Hearst, while Old Boyfriends (written with his brother Leonard) and his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” are also programmed. Five films by Jean Grémillon, a rather underappreciated figure of French cinema, will be showing

Series-wise, there’s an appreciation of the synth soundtrack stretching all the way back to 1956’s Forbidden Planet while, naturally, finding its glut of titles in the ’70s and ’80s––Argento and Carpenter, obviously, but also Tarkovsky and Peter Weir. A Prince and restorations of films by Bob Odenkirk, Obayashi, John Greyson, and Jacques Rivette (whose Duelle is a masterpiece of the highest order) make streaming debuts. I Am Cuba, Girlfight, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Dazed and Confused are June’s Criterion Editions.

Relapse | American Psycho author making his directorial debut with a monster movie
Bret Easton Ellis
Bret Easton Ellis, author of American Psycho, is turning his hand to filmmaking with his directorial debut Relapse – a monster movie and “elevated horror.”

The gorier excesses of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel American Psycho were tamed by director Mary Harron in 1999, with a star-making turn by Christian Bale as the sociopathic Wall Street exec, Patrick Bateman.

Almost 40 years into his literary career, Ellis is himself turning his hand to directing, with his debut being Relapse – an “elevated horror film” which will star Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn.

Elsewhere in Variety’s exclusive, the project is described as a “monster movie” albeit one set in the milieu long favoured by Ellis in his earlier work – among the rich, young and picturesque elites of Los Angeles. Here’s a synopsis:

“Fueled by his unstable personality and the invading power of social media, Matt’s paranoia grows, messing up with his rehabilitation program.

10 Years Later, Lindsay Lohan Drama ‘The Canyons’ Is Better than You Think
Image
On January 10, 2013, The New York Times published a story by Stephen Rodrick titled “Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie.” The article was a detailed account of what happened when director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope teamed up to make “The Canyons,” a low-budget feature starring troubled former child star Lindsay Lohan and porn actor James Deen that was in danger of falling apart nearly every day thanks to Lohan’s erratic behavior. The piece was thorough, well-researched, and extremely entertaining. It also had nothing to do with the actual movie that emerged from the chaos.

Nevertheless, by the time “The Canyons” was released in August 2013 it was clear that the article and the gossip had created a sense that Schrader’s film couldn’t possibly be any good — how could the conditions described by Rodrick lead to anything coherent?...

Is Lindsay Lohan Experiencing a Career Resurgence?
Image
Between 2003 and 2005, Lindsay Lohan was Hollywood’s hottest young actress, as Lohan’s winning performances in the hit comedy films Freaky Friday and Mean Girls catapulted Lohan, who also released a platinum-selling pop album in 2004, to an elevated level of teenage stardom that could perhaps best be described as Lindsay Mania.

However, by the end of the 2000s, Lohan’s career was in shambles, as Lohan’s personal problems, namely alcoholism and drug addiction, and professional disappointments combined to label Lohan as a troubled actress and woman whose unprofessional behavior outweighed her rapidly declining popularity.

Now thirty-seven, Lohan has embarked on a comeback attempt in the Netflix universe, beginning with her starring role in the 2022 romantic comedy film Falling for Christmas, which became one of Netfix’s most-watched films for the year. Lohan’s second Netflix film, a romantic comedy film called Irish Wish, is set to be released in 2024.

American Psycho (2000) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The American Psycho episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:

Horror can take many forms and its high time we talked about something firmly in the psychological realm. Author Brett Easton Ellis is known to broach subjects that are uncomfortable or outright horrifying, but it is with his 3rd book that he went for the throat so to speak and tackle a more traditional genre topic in a thoroughly nontraditional way. American Psycho was quite controversial upon its release in 1991 and the film based on it in 2000 (watch it Here) was divisive then and it’s divisive now.

Take a look at the craftsmanship on that card as we find out what the f*ck happened to this adaptation.

HBO Is Developing Bret Easton Ellis’ Gruesome Mess ‘The Shards’ — Can This Possibly Work?
Image
Bret Easton Ellis’ latest novel “The Shards” goes where only Bret Easton Ellis could possibly go: back to 1981 Los Angeles with a 600-page book, largely unedited, that’s mostly about himself.

That’s partly because the main character is named Bret, a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund prep-school brat who’s writing a book called “Less Than Zero.” Yes, this is literary-horror autofiction from the author of that aforementioned 1985 debut and shocking postmodern novels like “American Psycho.”

“The Shards” is also a more-or-less direct transcript of the Patreon serial Ellis launched in late 2020, and its unwieldiness means it’s well-matched for a long-form, flashy series adaptation at HBO. As IndieWire has confirmed, “The Shards” is now being set up at the premium cabler with Ellis as the sole writer while executive producing with Nick Hall (Emmy-winning executive producer on “The White Lotus”) and Brian Young (an executive producer...

Netflix Releases First Look at Lindsay Lohan’s Christmas Movie
Image
Netflix has released the first look of Lindsay Lohan’s forthcoming Christmas rom-com, which is still untitled. Lohan has largely foregone acting in recent years, so this movie — which will stream during the holiday season next year — marks her return to the screen. In “Untitled Holiday Rom-Com,” Lohan stars opposite Chord Overstreet.

Variety exclusively broke the news of Lohan’s Netflix movie in May.

In the movie, Lohan plays a “newly engaged, spoiled hotel heiress” (according to the logline), who gets amnesia after a skiing accident and “finds herself in the care of a handsome, blue-collar lodge owner” — that would be Overstreet — “and his precocious daughter in the days leading up to Christmas.”

George Young, Jack Wagner and Olivia Perez are also in the cast.

Netflix has made a robust business out of Christmas fare, and its original movies such as “Jingle Jangle,” “A Christmas Prince,” “The Christmas Chronicles” and...

Soundtrack Mix #19: Paul Schrader's Unseen Angels
Image
“I have decided to keep a journal. Not in a word program or digital file, but in longhand, writing every word out so that every inflection of penmanship, every word chosen, scratched out, revised, is recorded. To set down all my thoughts and the simple events of my day factually and without hiding anything. When writing about oneself, one should show no mercy. I will keep this diary for one year; 12 months. And at the end of that time, it will be destroyed. Shredded, then burnt. The experiment will be over.” Searching narration binds Paul Schrader’s work, the lone ranger facing a crisis of faith, unable to shake off the past. The above dialogue introduces Ethan Hawke’s Reverend Ernst Toller at the beginning of First Reformed (2017). Schrader’s characters share their own folklore and throughout this mix their tales come and go. The lyrics take on the form of character too,...

The Card Counter Review – Venice 2021
Image
Over the course of Paul Schrader’s career, he has gifted cinema audiences with absolute gems either as a screenwriter (most notably in his collaborations with Martin Scorsese) or a director. He has also fallen short on more than one occasion, The Canyons being the most recent example. So where does The Card Counter stand on Schrader’s list of hits and misses? Well, somewhere in between both camps.

One of the reasons this thriller is a hit lies in its leading man. Oscar Isaac, who stars in three offerings here at the Venice Film Festival, is in every scene, the camera often zooming in on his face, picking up every flicker, every twitch and every change of mood. Isaac plays ex-soldier turned card counter and poker pro William Tell. He has done time in military prison, where he learnt to count cards, and is now touring the casinos of the US east coast,...

Lindsay Lohan Is Set to Star in a New Netflix Holiday Movie
Image
After skyrocketing to fame at the age of 11 in Disney's reboot of The Parent Trap, Lindsay Lohan has been somewhat withdrawn from acting in recent years following her highly publicized personal issues over the last decade. Now she is returning to leading lady status in a currently untitled festive Netflix rom-com that hopes to follow in their previous seasonal successes such as The Christmas Chronicles, The Princess Switch and Jingle Jangle.

Lohan will play "a newly engaged, spoiled hotel heiress" who finds herself suffering amnesia following a skiing accident. Throw in a "handsome, blue-collar lodge owner and his precocious daughter", and the obvious Christmas time setting, and we have the kind of run of the mill, schmaltzy fare that always does well year after year. While the "snobby amnesiac learns moral lessons from regular guy/girl" storyline has been used time and time again, this one is likely to gain...

Lindsay Lohan to Star in Holiday Rom-Com at Netflix
Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan is returning to the movies and will star in a holiday-themed romantic comedy that is set at Netflix, the streamer announced Monday.

Lohan will star in the untitled film as a newly engaged and spoiled hotel heiress who suffers amnesia in a skiing accident and finds herself being cared for by a handsome, blue-collar lodge owner and his precocious daughter, according to the film’s logline released on Twitter.

No other cast has been set for the film.

The Lohan film is just one of many movies that are part of Netflix’s litany of holiday films, including movies such as “Jingle Jangle” or “A Christmas Prince.” However, the film is not expected to begin production until November of this year, so the film isn’t expected for release until later.

Janeen Damian (“A Christmas Waltz”) will direct the untitled film, and Michael Damian, Jeff Bonnett and Ron Oliver wrote the screenplay.

Lindsay Lohan to Return to Acting by Starring in Netflix Christmas Romantic Comedy (Exclusive)
Image
Lindsay Lohan, who has largely foregone acting in recent years, will soon star in a yet-to-be-titled Netflix holiday rom-com. The streamer has made a robust business out of Christmas fare, and its original movies such as “Jingle Jangle,” “A Christmas Prince,” “The Christmas Chronicles” and “The Princess Switch” (inspired by Lohan’s “The Parent Trap”) have become instant (and repeatable) holiday classics.

In this new movie, Lohan will play a “newly engaged, spoiled hotel heiress” (according to the logline), who gets amnesia after a skiing accident and “finds herself in the care of a handsome, blue-collar lodge owner and his precocious daughter in the days leading up to Christmas.” The rest of the cast has not yet been announced.

Lohan skyrocketed to fame as an 11-year-old actor, starring in a 1998 reboot of “The Parent Trap.” She followed that with a remake of “Freaky Friday” and “Mean Girls;” both roles cemented...

Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000)
Smiley Face Killers review – a blunt blade from Bret Easton Ellis
Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000)
The American Psycho author’s script, based on a series of real-life tragedies, fails the true-crime research standard

The patchy cinematic record of novelist-turned-screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis includes the classic Christian Bale-starring adaptation of American Psycho and 2013’s The Canyons, a soft-porn showcase for some of Lindsay Lohan’s best work – plus plenty more forgettable and regrettable nonsense besides. Even so, this schlocky take on a series of real-life tragedies represents a new low.

Ellis’s script, directed by Tim Hunter, is based on the largely debunked theory that a series of young men found dead in or near lakes and rivers in the American midwest between the late 1990s and the 2010s were victims of a serial killer or killers.

‘Trainspotting’s’ Irvine Welsh, ‘American Psycho’s’ Bret Easton Ellis Team for ‘American Tabloid’
Image
“Trainspotting” writer Irvine Welsh and “American Psycho” author Bret Easton Ellis are in final talks with the U.K.’s Burning Wheel Productions to co-create a dramatized series based on the national tabloid press culture in the U.S.

With the working title “American Tabloid,” the series will unspool over decades and follow events from a weekly publication where political correctness, morals and ethics are unheard of.

The deal is expected to get confirmed in the coming weeks, with a development schedule to follow.

“To do this production justice we always knew we would require writers who don’t hold back and go way further than most would dare,” said Shelley Hammond of Burning Wheel. “We are just beyond delighted that we are ready to agree a deal to make this happen with the incredible talent of Bret and Irvine. This would be the first time the two have collaborated...

Regarding Haddish, the fast-rising star who’s become a favorite of many an auteur, including Paul Thomas Anderson, Schrader said, “I love Tiffany. I’ve never met her, but I was on the phone with her for an hour. She’s a firecracker. It’s like talking to a live-wire connection. She’s very funny and,...

NYC Weekend Watch: 2001 Influences, Paul Schrader Double, Secret ’90s & More

Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

What do The Earrings of Madame De…, How the West Was Won, and an avant-garde series have in common? They’re all inspired 2001: A Space Odyssey and play in a program this weekend, as does a 70mm print of Kubrick’s film alongside the museum’s incredible new exhibit.
