There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Lionsgate brought CinemaCon 2022 to a close Thursday with a presentation that featured adaptations of a Judy Blume classic, a spinoff of one of its surprise hit films, and the return of John Wick and “The Hunger Games.”
Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco hosted the presentation, combining the sneak previews with a standup routine in which he joked that the upcoming “Expendables 4” with Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and 50 Cent would be “more violent than Will Smith in a comedy club.” Maniscalco also showed his own upcoming comedy “About My Father,” which he co-wrote and based on his own relationship with his Italian immigrant father. He was joined onstage by Robert De Niro, who plays Maniscalco’s father, as well as co-stars Leslie Bibb and Kim Cattrall.
Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson appeared to introduce a trailer for the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.

Lionsgate’s revenues fell during the most recent fiscal quarter, as the media company behind the “Hunger Games” and “John Wick” franchises recorded a loss of $13.9 million.
The company did manage to beat Wall Street’s expectations, however, with its earnings bolstered by the growing popularity of its Starz service and through lucrative licensing deals for its older films and television shows. Revenues for the period ending in December topped out at $836.4 million, a 16.2% decline. Lionsgate also recorded net losses of 6 cents per share and adjusted earnings of 21 cents per share.

Gillian Anderson, who was just nominated for a SAG Award and a Golden Globe for her work in “The Crown,” will star in Marc Forster’s “White Bird: A Wonder Story,” the follow-up to Lionsgate’s 2017 film “Wonder.”

Veteran filmmaker Marc Forster has been tapped to direct the feature adaptation of the graphic novel “White Bird: A Wonder Story” for Mandeville Films and Lionsgate. The story of the graphic novel stems from the same universe as Lionsgate’s 2017 film “Wonder.” Yes, that Jacob Tremblay, Owen Wilson, and Julia Roberts-led “Wonder,” which earned a sneaky Oscar nomination for Makeup and Hairstyling.

Lionsgate has signed Marc Forster to direct the drama “White Bird: A Wonder Story,” a year after buying the feature films rights to the R.J. Palacio graphic novel.
The studio adapted Palacio’s popular book “Wonder” into a 2017 feature film starring Jacob Tremblay, Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts. “Wonder” was an impressive performer at the box office with $330 million worldwide.
“White Bird” centers on a young Jewish girl hidden away by a boy and his family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Recounted by Grandmere to her grandson, Julian (a character first introduced to audiences in “Wonder”), the story demonstrates the power of kindness to change hearts, build bridges and even save lives.
Forster’s directing credits include “Neverland,” which was nominated for a best picture Academy Award; “Christopher Robin”; “World War Z”; “Quantum of Solace”; “The Kite Runner”; and “Stranger Than Fiction.” He will direct “White Bird” from a screenplay by Mark Bomback.

Indie auteur Gregg Araki’s outlandishly weird Starz series “Now Apocalypse” has officially been canceled after one season. But there may be a future for the show yet, according to the filmmaker.
“We are shopping for a new home since the show’s cheap, and with the most amazing cast and incredibly passionate fanbase,” said Araki in an email to IndieWire. “The fan reaction let me know that the people who watched it got it exactly as I hoped. The show really is a dream come true for me. I love it so much and am so proud of the work we all did together. And regardless of what happens, I’m happy knowing that it will live forever in the streaming/sharing cosmos.”

Often with low-budget filmmaking, the tendency is to reach for cinematography with a realistic look that’s rooted in the use of natural light sources. That description, though, has never applied to indie legend Gregg Araki and it certainly didn’t apply to his first foray into a TV, “Now Apocalypse.” It was something cinematographer Sandra Valde-Hansen discovered working with Araki on two features, “Kaboom” and “White Bird in a Blizzard.”
“I was two years out of AFI and getting the opportunity to work for Gregg opened up my visual world,” said Valde-Hansen, who appear who appeared at IndieWire’s Consider This Fyc Brunch. “He introduced me to a world where, given the limited resources, we can actually play with color and light and still come under budget and limited time frame.”

Emmy winners Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom”) and Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock”) head up the new Hulu original series “The Looming Tower,” which chronicles the rise of Osama Bin-Laden. Also featured in this docudrama about the inter-agency rivalry between the CIA and FBI in the first part of this century are Golden Globe nominees Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg. Our national nightmare is over: After more than a decade of dystopian futures, obtuse love triangles, and weak Charli Xcx singles, Hollywood’s flash-in-the-pan love affair with Ya film adaptations has finally run its course. You can feel it in the air, and you can see it in the dwindling box office returns. The climactic installments of “The Maze Runner” and “The Divergent Series” are still on the horizon, and an unusually promising adaptation of John Green’s “Looking for Alaska” continues to percolate in pre-production, but bodies tend to wriggle for a little while after they’re officially pronounced dead. The fact of the matter is that Voldemort has been vanquished, the people of District 12 have overthrown The Capitol, and Bella Swan has stopped pouting. There will always be movies made for the tween audience, but make no mistake: The Ya world as we know it has come to an end.

Bella Swan and Edward Cullen may live forever in the supposed bliss of a deathless union, but the genre they jumpstarted has proven to be decidedly mortal. It was only a few short years ago that the blitz of post-Potter Ya adaptations — characterized by dystopian settings, a fetish for the supernatural, and a buffet of genetically indistinguishable British boys — was standing toe-to-toe with superhero movies atop the Hollywood food chain. But the times they are a changin', fluctuating like the hormones of their target demographic.

For my money, there are few up and coming actresses in Hollywood more exciting to watch than Shailene Woodley. In a relatively short period of time, Woodley has managed to work her way up the A-list, becoming someone whose mere presence in a film is something to be excited about. She’s been snubbed for Academy Award attention at least three times now, for The Descendants, The Fault in Our Stars, and The Spectacular Now, though her time is coming soon enough, perhaps even this year for her supporting work in the biopic Snowden. She’s also been able to anchor a big blockbuster franchise, taking the lead in the Divergent films, which continue this week with The Divergent Series: Allegiant. One thing is for sure, she’s one of the best that the industry has to offer… Here now are Woodley’s best performances to date: 5. Divergent 4. The Descendants...

Harder Candy: Pike Headlines Predictably Exploitative Rape Thriller
It seems Rosamund Pike is now the girl most likely to…. exact ruthless retribution on her instigators, if judging from the latest indie thriller Return to Sender, unfortunately arriving on the heels of her Oscar nominated success in last year’s comparably themed David Fincher film, Gone Girl. But the pedigree of auteur assistance is not on hand with Fouad Mikati’s sophomore effort, his first film since 2010’s Operation: Endgame. Somehow, he amassed a rather respectable cast for this grindhouse knockoff that could have easily premiered on Lifetime if Pike hadn’t suddenly become such a hot commodity. To be fair, we’ll have to wait another year or so to appreciate the actress in some higher quality offerings, and by then this will most likely be forgotten about.
Surgical nurse Miranda Wells (Pike) seems to have a bright future ahead of her.

Showing some love to their English fans, Shailene Woodley and Theo James were both out and about in London, England on Wednesday (March 11).
The “White Bird in a Blizzard” babe was all smiles as she made her way to the BBC Radio 1 Studios where Mr. James had arrived earlier.
Woodley told People that it was a challenge to return to playing Tris in her “Divergent” sequel “Insurgent”: "Getting back into Tris was much more difficult than I anticipated because I didn’t take into account that I, myself, had grown for a year. I figured getting back into [Tris] would be simple because I would just go back into that mindset, but my personal mindset had progressed a year in evolution.”...

She’s been busy promoting the new Oliver Stone flick “Snowden,” and it sounds like Shailene Woodley is a big fan of the notoriously whistleblower.
In a new interview, the “White Bird in a Blizzard” actress, who plays Snowden’s girlfriend Lindsay Mills, gushes, “I define a hero as somebody, who against the judgment of other people, if they believe something will positively impact the world and they choose to do it and honor their integrity that’s what I sort of consider a hero, no matter how big or small a feat they create. And in that light, absolutely I think that Edward Snowden is a hero.”
Directing her remarks to Edward (whom she’s never actually met), Shailene continues, “You are the epitome of the word selfless. You did something knowing you wouldn’t be able to come home, knowing that your country would have very mixed feelings...

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. Also recognized in this year's nominations is Scream Factory's Nightbreed: The Director's Cut Blu-ray, NBC's Hannibal TV series, Only Lovers Left Alive, and many more.
