In 2014, Wes Ball made his directorial debut with the dystopian science fiction film The Maze Runner which is based on James Dashner’s novel of the same name. The filmmaker subsequently went on to direct two more films in the franchise which follows the story of a teenager who is thrown into an intricate maze and must find his way out of it.

The central protagonist in the films was played by Dylan O’Brien who impressed with his performance in the trilogy. But the young actor who aptly developed the nuances of his character through the narratives, was initially not considered the perfect choice by Ball owing to a certain preconceived notion that he had of him.

Rom-coms are a staple of cinema and have been for decades. Right alongside action movies and horror flicks, these tales of romance infused with humor are often there to help anchor any given year at the movies. Yet, they are often viewed as nothing more than popcorn movies; the cinematic equivalent of empty calories. Director Michael Showalter's "The Idea of You" is here to remind us that these movies can be so much more than that. At their best, they can be illuminating experiences that shed meaningful light on the human condition. Thanks in no small part to a stellar performance by Anne Hathaway and a star-making turn for Nicholas Galitzine, this is the genre at its best.
The film centers on Solène (Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who has to chaperone her teenage daughter's trip to the Coachella after her ex-husband bails at the last minute. There, she...

I used to watch a lot of movies when I was a kid, and some of them were actually great, or so I thought. It is only now that I realize that those films were repetitive, predictable, and had nothing new to say. There are countless of these genre movies, and The Painter is another one of them. Jon Voight (what a fantastic actor) sure loves to do the same Mission: Impossible part again and again. He is joined by Charlie Weber, who plays the lead in a very archaic manner, and to be honest, the script does not allow him to do anything else with it.

Old Dads is a comedy film directed by Bill Burr, who also co-wrote the film with Ben Tishler. The Netflix film follows three middle-aged men, who find themselves not fitting in the customs of the modern and often times very fragile and easily offended world. Burr’s style of comedy makes the film work as he also stars in the lead role alongside Bobby Cannavale and Bokeem Woodbine. So, if you loved the Netflix film here are some similar movies you could watch next.

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.
Check out the Season 5 trailer of “What We Do In the Shadows”:
Another highly anticipated return coming to Hulu in July is the latest season of long-running animated series “Futurama.” The show’s first four seasons aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, it was then picked up by Comedy Central for three seasons from 2008 to 2013. Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

Over five low-budget box office hits and a two-season TV series, “The Purge” saga — which portrays a not-too-distant-future America where all crimes, including murder, are legal for one night a year in order to satiate a bloodthirsty public — swelled into a $450 million franchise. But the first chapter was almost never made.
While the film became the defining hit of writer and director James DeMonaco’s career, he says the script was passed over “40-50 times” for being seen as “too anti-American.”
“I had this little, strange, dark indictment of American gun culture,” he said. “I hate guns. To me, the scariest thing in the world would be a night where everyone was armed and it was legal to use these firearms. To me, there was nothing scarier than that notion.”
Ultimately, the film got the attention of super-producer Jason Blum, who “saw something bigger in the conceit,” said DeMonaco. Soon,...

Exclusive: Vince Vaughn will return to star in (and likely produce) a sequel to his hit 2004 comedy, Dodgeball, scripted by Jordan VanDina (The Binge), which is in early development at 20th Century Studios, Deadline has learned.
While Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed the original film for 20th Century Fox, it’s not yet clear whether he’ll be involved in the sequel, and who, if not Thurber, would direct. Equally uncertain is who will join Vaughn on screen, though there’s certainly a deep bench of talent to pull from in looking back to Dodgeball‘s stacked ensemble, which included Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman and William Shatner, as well as the late Rip Torn.

If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

Shawn Levy is a busy man. As a director, his credits stretch back to the 1990s and include everything from family friendly movies like "Big Fat Liar" and "Night at the Museum" to less family friendly movies like "This Is Where I Leave You" and, uh, that's pretty much it, actually. From "Real Steel" to "Date Night" and "The Adam Project," most of Levy's filmography is considered pretty safe, if not deeply snarky, viewing for the whole family. Well, for everyone 13 and up, at least. It's a lucrative cinematic window that statistically ticks the most boxes but it can also be incredibly limiting for certain stories ... and Levy knows this all too well.
While Levy has yet to direct anything near as hard R-rated as the first two "Deadpool" movies (even the R-rated "This Is Where I Leave You" is pretty tame compared to a Ryan Reynolds superhero franchise...

“Deadpool 3” director Shawn Levy confirmed to Collider that his team is targeting a May 2023 production start for the comic book tentpole. The film not only pairs Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but it also marks Deadpool’s first outing in the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe. Levy assured fans the franchise will keep its R-rated “hardcore” violence even with the backing of the family-friendly Disney.
“We are writing, rewriting, developing, prepping ‘Deadpool’ every day now,” Levy said. “It is such a blast to laugh every day. It is so delicious to hear and write and come up with these scenes where people are just talking foul. And the violence is in your face and hardcore, and it’s very much a ‘Deadpool’ movie.”
For Levy, maintaining the franchise’s R-rated edge was integral when he agreed to direct the movie. The film will reunite Levy with Reynolds...

Also starring Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi. Visually this looks totally awesome, with all that video game action and craziness, but as for ...

As major theatrical films scheduled for the coming months continue to be pushed to future dates, the upcoming sci-fi action comedy “Free Guy” remains dated for December 11. 20th Century Studios’ movie stars Ryan Reynolds as a video game character who, after becoming self-aware, rejects his role as a non-playable character and begins acting as the game’s hero.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been enjoying the vampire mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows. I think it’s hilarious, and I’m happy to tell you that FX has renewed it for a second season!
The show is based on Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s incredibly funny 2014 film of the same name, but the series is set in Staten Island instead of Wellington. It also follows a different group of vampires living together.
Here’s a synopsis that was released for Season 1:
“Much like the movie, the series follows three vampires who live together: Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) — the former two are husband and wife. Also living with them is a fourth vampire named Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), who’s an “energy vampire.” Instead of blood, he sucks the energy out of his victims by...

The trailer gives us our best look yet at the comedy and the characters that will fill it. As you’ll see, there are some pretty funny characters that are being introduced.
The series is based on the 2014 mokumentary film of the same, but this series follows a different group of vampires living together in Staten Island and the other boroughs. None of the characters from the movie will appear in the series, but it still looks like it’ll be just as funny.

FX has released a new teaser trailer for Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s highly anticipated upcoming What We Do In The Shadows comedy series. The teaser features a group of vampires celebrating a birthday, and the way it plays out is pretty amusing.
The series is based on the incredibly funny mokumentary film of the same, but this series follows a group of vampires living together in Staten Island and the other boroughs. We won’t see any of the characters from the movie, but it looks like it will be a great show!
Here’s a synopsis that was released for the series:
“Much like the movie, the series follows three vampires who live together: Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) — the former two are husband and wife. Also living with them is a fourth vampire named Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), who’s an “energy vampire.

CBS has put in development Townies, a multi-camera comedy executive produced by Green Eggs and Ham writer/executive producer Jared Stern.
Penned/co-executive produced by young writer Katie Greenway (Bella and the Bulldogs), Townies follows an eclectic group of friends in their twenties who are happily living large in their small Wisconsin hometown.
Stern executive produces via his A Stern Talking To Productions for Warner Bros. TV where Stern is under an overall deal.
Stern serves as executive producer/showrunner of the Netflix/Warner Bros. Animation series Green Eggs and Ham, which he adapted from Dr. Seuss’ classic. He has been a writer and regular adviser on several Warner Bros. film projects as a member of its Warner Animation Group “think tank,” which launched back in 2013. Among the projects Stern has worked on through that pact are The Lego Batman Movie and Smallfoot.

Free Guy will see Ryan Reynolds headline an action-comedy helmed by Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy.
Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has no shortage of projects, thanks to his acclaimed, financially fulfilling comeback as Marvel’s recently-Fox-expatriated Merc with a Mouth. Interestingly, one addition to Reynolds’s backlog, a comedy called Free Guy, will purportedly utilize the artificial-world trope of The Truman Show with a dash of tonal dust from the Grand Theft Auto games.
Fee Guy, a 20th Century Fox comedic actioner, will see Reynolds play a bank teller living a humdrum routine life, only to learn that he is, in actuality, a background character in a violent open world video game; a world that is somehow in jeopardy and can only be saved by him. The film will be directed by Shawn Levy (the Night at the Museum films).
