Excited for ‘Clown in a Cornfield’? Here Are 6 Other Horror Movies You May Not Have Known are Also Based on Books!
Image
Tales of masked killers and man-eating mutants are more associated with the world of film than literature, but if the success of horror writers like Stephen King and Clive Barker has taught us anything, it’s that a good story can transcend the limitations of a single medium. That’s why there are so many popular adaptations in the horror genre, with some of the most popular scary movies of all time having been based on existing short stories and novels.

With Eli Craig’s Clown in a Cornfield bringing Adam Cesare’s 2020 novel to the big screen this Friday, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six horror movies that you may not have known were also adapted from books!

For the purposes of this list, we’ll be focusing on films with lesser-known literary origins, so you shouldn’t expect to see classics like Jaws,...

The Howling (1981) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
Not all of the classic Universal Monsters were based on classic stories. While Frankenstein and Dracula came from the minds of Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker, The Wolfman, and previously Werewolf of London, was based on folklore dating back centuries rather than fiction. While the character has had a hard time coming back into the limelight with the disappointing Wolfman from 2010 and even more disappointing Wolf Man from 2025, the myth has done well for itself even while not being as in the public favor as the Zombie or Vampire. Those original films may not be based on books but that didn’t stop writers from creating their own stories or studios from adapting them. This includes the likes of Hammer Studios Curse of the Werewolf being adapted from The Werewolf of Paris and The Wolfen getting turned into the 1981 movie Wolfen. Speaking of 1981, there were two other rather small werewolf...

Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf (1985) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
As my tastes change and I get a chance to watch more and more movies, largely due to wonderful companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, and Synapse putting out forgotten or lost movies, this also changes what I’m willing to call a Black Sheep. The Howling series is kind of a Black Sheep series in horror. It has 8 films over a 30-year span from 1981 to 2011 and while the first one is typically held in high esteem because of its pedigree, and, well, because its good, there’s a lot to watch and unpack here. You can look at which movie is the black sheep of the series but let’s get even more granular with it. Let’s look at which of the two Howling movies directed by Phillipe Mora deserves the moniker. While the third one has that specific Ozploitation flair to it that admittedly I am an easy mark for,...

Image
Blackpink’s Lisa Slammed For Allegedly Copying Xg In Alter Ego Title Track (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Blackpink’s Lisa has recently released his first full-length album, Alter Ego, alongside the title track Fxck Up The World (Vixi solo version). While her fans have praised the K-pop star for breaking boundaries and reinventing her whole musical persona, others have accused her of plagiarism. Many took to social media platforms, blasting her for allegedly copying Xg, a fourth-generation Japanese girl group based in South Korea.

On February 28, Lisa released Alter Ego along with the music video of the title track Fxck Up The World. Initially, the song received divided reactions, with many criticizing the lyrics while others came to her support. Now, she has been hit with another wave of accusations.

The Ozploitation Movie That Got Dennis Hopper Kicked Out Of Australia
Image
Actor Dennis Hopper was the kind of artist myths are made from. He was an incredibly talented performer with a larger-than-life personality that frequently got him into trouble. His reckless behavior and intense drug abuse could make him incredibly difficult to work with, and he even tried to get Marlon Brando to fist-fight him after a misunderstanding before the filming of "Apocalypse Now," leading to the two being separated on set at all times. In the mid-1970s, however, he behaved so badly while filming a movie in Australia that he was not only declared dead on his feet and banned from driving a car in the state of Victoria ever again, but he was also kicked right on out of the country.

That movie was "Mad Dog Morgan," a disturbing 1976 outback Western based on the true life misdeeds of bushranger and outlaw Dan Morgan (whom Hopper played in the film). The Ozploitation,...

New Captain America Comic From Chip Zdarsky Will Reveal Steve Rogers' First Clash With Doctor Doom
Image
This July, writer Chip Zdarsky will relaunch Captain America alongside artist Valerio Schiti. Following the former's Eisner-nominated run on Daredevil, it's said he and Schiti will team up "to change how the world views Captain America forever."

The opening arc of their new run takes place in a rarely explored period; after the World War II hero emerged from frozen suspended animation, but before he joined the Avengers. Declassifying Steve Rogers' first mission after re-enlisting in the U.S. Army, the story sees Captain America tasked with infiltrating Latveria, leading to his previously untold first encounter with Doctor Doom.

Packed with "bold, relevant insights" into Captain America's role and legacy as he learns just how much the world has changed in his absence, this top-secret conflict will come back to haunt all involved when the series progresses into present-day storylines.

In addition, it's said we can look forward to Cap suiting...

'Kevin Feige Does Not Treat Comic Book Creators Well': Deadpool Creator Swears Off Working With Marvel Again
Image
In 2024, the Deadpool character reached new levels of success with how well Deadpool & Wolverine performed in theaters. However, creator Rob Liefeld felt mistreated by Marvel Studios amid the release of the film, and he feels so unhappy with the experience that he can't see himself ever working with the company again.

Liefeld opened up on how he feels about Marvel Studios and its head honcho, Kevin Feige, during the latest edition of the Robservations with Rob Liefeld podcast, per THR. He said that there were big issues related to the New York premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine in July of last year. Trouble arose when Liefeld didn't realize until he was at the premiere that he and his family were not invited to the afterparty, which he was not accustomed to. He also felt disrespected by Feige on the red carpet, noting that he was not even acknowledged by the Marvel boss.

'Werewolves' Star Teases Horror Movie's 'Unbelievable' Practical Effects
Image
While Universals Wolf Man might be the most anticipated werewolf movie in recent memory, dont sleep on Werewolves, the new action-horror film from director Steven C. Miller thats set to release on Dec. 6. Described by star Frank Grillo as "The Purge meets werewolves," the movie takes things old school, utilizing practical effects to their full advantage at a time when everything seems to be done with CGI. Also featuring Lou Diamond Phillips, its those practical effects that he recently teased as being "unbelievable" in a new interview with MovieWeb earlier this week.

Phillips stars alongside Grillo as Dr. Aranda in Werewolves, which sees a latent gene in the population triggered to transform everyone into bloodthirsty creatures when they come into contact with light from a supermoon. Currently starring in director James C. Claytons Get Fast, we spoke to Phillips about the new werewolf flick, which he called "a crowd pleaser.

Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf comes to 4K with a ton of bonus features
Image
Few franchises have gone as far off the rails as the Howling franchise did, and it did so very quickly, going to one of the best werewolf movies ever made with director Joe Dante’s The Howling to director Philippe Mora’s oddball follow-up Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf. Still, Howling II does have it charms and its fans, so Vinegar Syndrome have given the film a 4K release – and they’ve brought it to 4K with a ton of bonus features! Copies are available to order on the Vinegar Syndrome website and go for the price of $37.99.

Directed by Philippe Mora from a screenplay by Robert Sarno and Gary Brandner, Howling II has the following synopsis: Ben is mourning the recent death of his sister, Karen, whom he believes to have been killed in a savage wolf attack. At her funeral, Ben is approached by the mysterious Stefan,...

‘The Primevals’ Review – Long Unfinished Stop Motion Movie Finally Releases 45 Years Later
Image
In a time where CGI and other digital technology reign as the kings of cinema special effects, Full Moon Features has released a film with old school SFX and a production timeline nearly half a century-long, spanning from conceptualization to release, with The Primevals.

And this timeline length is no exaggeration. The road to this film’s release began with plot elements used in the 1968 short film Raiders of the Stone Ring by writer-director David Allen (Puppet Master II and The Howling) that evolved into a full-length film script by 1975 and then produced by Charles Band in 1978. Alas, pre-production saw some funding issues surface that postponed the project until filming commenced again in 1994, before finally being completed and released in 2023.

After learning of the existence of Yeti when one is killed in Nepal, Dr. Claire Collier (Juliet Mills) and her student Matt Connor (Richard Joseph Paul) head to the Himalayas to investigate its origin.

Dog Soldiers 2 may be dead in the water, but Neil Marshall isn’t giving up hope
Image
Director Neil Marshall made one of the all-time coolest werewolf movies with his 2002 film Dog Soldiers (watch it Here), so it’s shocking that we’ve never gotten a sequel… especially considering we’re living in a world where An American Werewolf in Paris exists, and there have been eight Howling movies. A few years ago, Marshall said there was “more of a chance” of the sequel happening than ever before… but in a new interview with Inverse, he gave a disappointing update, saying he fears that Dog Soldiers 2 is dead in the water.

When asked for a status update on Dog Soldiers 2, Marshall told Inverse, “I’ve a feeling it’s probably dead in the water because things have gone very quiet from the other side. I’m not giving up, though; there’s still a possibility. We’ve been trying to get it off the ground for the past six years.

The Correct Order To Watch The Howling Movies
Image
Joe Dante's 1981 werewolf flick "The Howling" boasts one of the most impressive werewolf transformation scenes in the genre's history. A vicious serial killer named Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) confront's the film's protagonist, Karen (Dee Wallace), an investigative reporter recovering from a previous attack at a woods-bound therapy camp. Lit through the slits in Venetian blinds, Quist's face extends and mutates, his mouth ripping into a terrifying wolf grin, his eyes bulging. Karen witnesses the entire transformation and is, naturally, terrified. Quist was already known for his penchant for murder, but learning that he is a werewolf makes him that much more monstrous. The effects were provided by the amazing Rob Bottin.

"The Howling," while a corker of a monster movie, is also a clever satire of then-modern therapy. A certain kind of "touchy-feely" language had come into vogue in the late '70s and early '80s, and...

Exclusive Interview: David Zagorski (Horny Teenagers Must Die)
Image
What made you want to get involved in the film industry? I have always loved movies, since I can remember. When I was a kid I thought I wanted to be an actor but I eventually found that I enjoyed writing more so I pursued that. After having a couple of scripts produced I decided to take it to the next step and started directing. Filmmaking is definitely something I’ve always been passionate about.

From script–to–screen, how close did Horny Teenagers Must Die! come to its original vision? Pretty close. There were some issues we ran into during production that forced some changes. One scene was completely cut from the script due to the loss of a location, and a couple scenes were added after the initial shoot in order to help with some character development. Overall though, the final movie is probably 85% as it was written.

10 Best Don Bluth's Film, Ranked
Image
Millennials of the '80s and '90s can be nostalgic for many of the children's movies they grew up with. Disney ruled classic children's films back then as well, but there is another name that some fans might not realize actually created their favorite kid's movie. Originally working with Walt Disney, Don Bluth was an animator for films like Sleeping Beauty, The Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, and The Rescuers. In 1983, he started his own company, which began animating video games and moved into film. Now an '80s icon, Dragon's Lair was Bluth's first video game.

Thirty years later, Bluth is set to direct a live-action film version of Dragon's Lair with Ryan Reynolds attached as the main character, and Netflix is in talks for its release. The game's popularity has come back thanks to the help of '80s nostalgia and shows like Stranger Things featuring it,...

The 10 Best Movies Recommended by Joe Dante
Image
Joe Dante is the quirky director responsible for genre gems like Gremlins, The Howling, Innerspace, and The 'Burbs. He was on fire in the '80s, serving up a string of live-action features that have the infectious energy and feel of live-action cartoons. In particular, Dante is known for his fun blend of horror and comedy, often with a subversive and satirical edge. At their best, his movies poke fun at the conventions of their genres while still serving up earnest, engrossing stories.

Marvel Finally Corrects What the MCU Got Wrong About Nick Fury
Image
The comics are correcting the McU's portrayal of Nick Fury and reminding fans that he was the true leader of the Howling Commandos, not Captain America. Nick Fury's impact on the team is highlighted as Captain America is hesitant to take over even temporarily, showing how much the team reveres Fury's leadership. The comic emphasizes how different the team operates without Fury, with in-fighting and a lack of cohesion, demonstrating his essential role in both the team's dynamics and the narrative.

Warning: Spoilers for CapWolf & the Howling Commandos #1!The comics are getting around to correcting what the MCU got wrong about Nick Fury in regard to the Howling Commandos. It's common to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe occasionally take onscreen liberties when adapting the comics that came before it. One of those liberties was establishing that Steve Rogers led the Howling Commandos during the 1940s when, in the comics,...

Why Joe Dante’s The Howling is the Best Werewolf Movie of the ‘80s
Image
The 1980s were a decade full of big hair, punk rock, video games, political drama, and leg-warmers. It was also full of werewolves. In 1981 alone, there were four werewolf flicks in the theaters, those being Wolfen, An American Werewolf in London, Full Moon High, and the subject of this very article, The Howling. The rest of the decade saw many more lycanthropes lighting up the silver screen, including The Beast Within, The Company of Wolves, Silver Bullet, The Monster Squad, Monster Dog, and a plethora of Howling sequels. With so many werewolf movies coming out in a stretch of just ten years, only the truly unique ones that could stand apart from the rest would be remembered as classics. One such classic that innovated upon the typical werewolf mythology is The Howling.

As previously mentioned, Joe Dante’s The Howling has had stiff competition since its release, with the film...

10 Underrated 1980s Horror Movies You Should Definitely Check Out
Image
The 1980s offered more than just slasher movies and body horror, with underrated gems like The Howling and Razorback showcasing unique and terrifying concepts. Vampire's Kiss, starring Nicholas Cage, is an unforgettable blend of satire, character study, and gothic horror, highlighting Cage's brave and impressive performance. Q: The Winged Serpent and The Hidden are standout examples of comedic horror, combining gruesome thrills and clever storytelling with satire and wit.

While there are plenty of classic 1980s horror movies that every genre fan should check out, there are also a lot of underrated efforts from this period that deserve more love. Overall, the 1980s was a strange decade for the horror genre. While the 1970s is mostly associated with grim, brutal grindhouse hits like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Last House on the Left, the decade also gave viewers mainstream successes like The Exorcist and Carrie. Similarly, while the...

Darkest Dungeon 2: Best Team Comps For the Early and Late Game
Image
Darkest Dungeon 2 is all about making the most out of a bad situation. Defeat isn’t inevitable, but it’s certainly likely. The best heroes in the game can help you survive some otherwise impossible situations, but your foolish hopes of victory demand the best team comps.

Darkest Dungeon 2‘s versatile team-building system allows you to explore so many possibilities. Some parties have obvious synergies (and even special team names), but there are so many ways to make a viable team. As such, it’s nearly impossible to identify the absolute best team possibilities so early into the game’s lifespan. Of course, that is something that we’re at least going to try to do as more of the game is explored and “solved.”

For now, though, let’s take a look at some of the best available comps for the very start of the game, the mid-game, and the late-game.

Who Is Sonya Falsworth? Olivia Colman's Secret Invasion Character Explained
Image
The official trailer for Secret Invasion has detailed more about Olivia Colman's character, Sonya Falsworth, begging the question of what broader MCU connections her character has. It is clear from hiring an actor of Colman's quality that Falsworth is going to be a vital part of the upcoming Disney+ series. Colman's casting and the hints seen in Secret Invasion's official trailer make her MCU inclusion somewhat of a mystery, though some details can be gleaned from both Marvel Comics and old MCU films.

Secret Invasion will tell a story similar to that of the same name from the comics, with Nick Fury and Talos teaming up to stop a rogue band of Skrulls from covertly infiltrating Earth. This makes Falsworth's inclusion make all the more sense, given that she is an MI6 agent likely looking to counter the Skrull invasion. That being said, here is every detail that...

‘Beast Within’ DVD Review

Stars: Colm Feore, Steven Morana, Holly Deveaux, Ari Millen, Art Hindle, Bobbie Phillips, Melissa D’Agostino, Marco Timpano, Mark Andrade, Nicole Stamp, Jon Cor, Supinder Wraich | Written by Matthew Campagna, Rudy Jahchan | Directed by Chris Green, Steven Morana

[Note: With the film now out on DVD in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of Beast Within from its US digital release last year]

Essentially a horror version of Knives Out (or the many Agatha Christie films which inspired it) and filmed on a low-budget, of course, Beast Within is a whodunit creature feature which stars Steven Morana (Whiskey Business) and Holly Deveaux (The Mist) as a couple attending the launch party of their gaming app Werewolves Awaken. But when a guest is mysteriously found dead, they question who could be the killer, as everyone becomes a suspect and player in a deadly real-life version of the game.

For a low-budget genre film, Beast Within has some truly fantastic effects work – from the over the top violence, blood...

The Witch (2015)
The Wretched – Review
The Witch (2015)
C’mon film fans. let’s shake off the stuck-at-home isolation blues with this week’s new release. Yup, it’s not an “indie” full of despair and drama. So, it’s a rollicking comedy? Well..uh uh. A toe-tappin’ musical, perhaps?, Nah…it’s a horror flick. Well. at least you can feel good that all the weirdness isn’t directed at you as you stare out the window. And this is indeed an independent film, another in the subgenre of “art-house” horror led by The Witch, The Babadook, and the very recent The Other Lamb, though, in spirit, it may be closest to the retro thrills of It Follows. This one owes a lot to that 70s homage, though it has more of the 1980’s thriller vibe of the Netflix hit “Stranger Things”. So with all the real-world scares outside can The Wretched deliver the shivers?

Speaking of that past decade,...

Howling (2012) a.k.a The Killer Wolf
Air Bud: Killer Wolf Edition

In an overtly sexist police precinct that is far more preoccupied by keeping tally over who arrested who and how many points each arrests was worth, it falls to the newly appointed detective duo of Sang-Kill ( Kang-Ho Song ) and Eun-Young ( Na-Yeong Lee ) to try and nab the latest potential murderer. However, the cause of death surrounding this bizarre incident leads them to look for a suspect of the “canine” variety. What they discover ( no worries, this is only a quasi-spoiler that shouldn’t affect your overall experience ) is they existence of a formidable crossbreed between a dog and a wolf. Could this be the unusual killer they are looking for?

Quality actors have many gears. Switching from one to the other with perfect timing is key. You wouldn’t want to see someone burst out with laughter in the middle of a dramatic scene and vice-versa.
