The winners of the 12th Annual Easterseals Disability Film Challenge Awards were announced Thursday night at the Sony Pictures Studios lot in Culver City.
Designed to promote and encourage more film and television works by artists with disabilities, this year’s Easterseals challenge tasked filmmakers with creating short films one-to-five minutes in length that exist within the thriller and suspense genres. As usual, challenge participants had just five days to craft their shorts. The cast and crew of each film had to consist of volunteers, and at least one person with a physical or cognitive disability was encouraged to be involved in the making of each short in an on-camera or behind-the-scenes capacity.
Of the 123 shorts that were submitted this year, just five ultimately took home the challenge’s top awards. In addition to host, actor and Easterseals founder Nic Novicki, Thursday night’s event was attended by Peter Farrelly...

It was only a matter of time before someone decided to mix a medical sim with Lovecraft. And that’s just what we’re getting with Darts Games and Hawthorn Games’ upcoming Do No Harm, which is slated for release on Steam on March 6.
Do No Harm sees you as the doctor of a village, where moral choices become paramount to death or survival. You must diagnose patients by analyzing their unsettling symptoms, and treating them with your Book of Medicine. Each patient offers hints to their affliction, but often not enough, forcing you to take informed risks with every decision.
As you progress in Do No Harm, you begin to realise from your patients that there’s something in this village that’s not what it initially seemed. Nightmarish entities begin to warp reality as you treat your patients, causing hallucinations and blocking your ability to interact with items,...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios just won a battle for Love of Your Life, a spec by Nyad scribe Julia Cox, Deadline hears. Love of Your Life has been the talk of town this Halloween, and sources said the result is one of the biggest spec script deals in recent memory, landing in the $2 million range. Ryan Gosling is attached to produce with new producing partner Jessie Henderson at General Admission.
Numerous bids were proffered when CAA dropped the spec on the town, and one of the most intriguing bids came from Taylor Sheridan and Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, who were ready to pay $2 million with a greenlight and a theatrical release. David Ellison’s Skydance got in the game with them, assuming the bid so they could keep their money in their pockets. That film would have gone through Paramount. No specifics yet on how Amazon MGM sees how...

In ABCs Lost, Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) was the first of many major characters to get killed off. The series followed a group of survivors after Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on a seemingly deserted island with many secrets. While not everyone survived the initial crash, a core ensemble was established in the first episodes of the series whose adventures were followed on the island. Boone, a former lifeguard who was on the flight with his stepsister Shannon (Maggie Grace), was the first of that ensemble to be killed off, though he did continue to appear in flashbacks of the show.
The former lifeguard was the only member of the core group who didnt survive past season 1. Several more key, often sad deaths on Lost Shannon included followed in season 2 and beyond. However, Boone's death is often remembered as one of the most important of the series, despite the character having some...

Maggie Grace was disappointed with Shannon's early death on Lost. Shannon's death had a meaningful impact on other characters, like Sayid. Killing Shannon ensured a sympathetic and memorable exit, with brief returns in later episodes.
Lost actor Maggie Grace reflects on her character's fate on the popular ABC television series. Grace played Shannon Rutherford, stepsister to fellow Oceanic Flight 815 survivor Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder), and she became romantically involved with another castaway, Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews). Grace was a series regular throughout all of season 1 and up to the season 2 episode "What Kate Did," where Shannon was buried on the island after being shot in season 2, episode 6, "Abandoned." She briefly reprised the role for a season 3 episode and in the series finale.
While speaking with The Independent, Grace looked back on her time spent filming Lost and her disappointment that her character was killed so early in the series' six-season run.

TV shows face ruthless cancellations with dwindling viewership and negative reviews. The fate of a show can be sealed after just a few episodes. Hank, Ironside, Do No Harm, and Connecting are some shows that quickly fell victim to low ratings and poor reception from audiences. Some shows may have deserved cancellation, but others were ahead of their time or made a lasting impact as time capsules of their respective eras.
TV shows that were canceled embarrassingly quickly highlight the brutal nature of the entertainment industry. A new show can have millions of viewers, but if those numbers dwindle drastically, it can get canceled without warning. The same is true for shows that immediately garner strong negative reactions from audiences. Unfortunately, networks cancel new and poorly performing shows all the time.

Shetland is a gripping Scottish crime drama set in the eponymous Scottish archipelago, known for its darker and more sinister edge. The Shetland cast has seen changes over the years, but the performances continue to impress, with the show remaining a critical darling. The show reinvents the small-town crime genre with each passing year, making it one of the best shows set in Scotland.
Even though the Shetland cast has grown and changed over the course of its near-decade on the air, the featured players never fail to deliver in the gripping Scottish crime drama. Exclusive: Rhys Ifans (Spider-Man: No Way Home) has signed on to star alongside Annette Bening and Jodie Foster in the Netflix film Nyad, which marks the narrative directorial debut of Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.
Pic is based on Diana Nyad’s bestselling autobiography Find A Way. It follows the remarkable true story of the marathon swimmer, who, at the age of 64, became the first person to complete the “Everest of swims”—executing a 53-hour, 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida, through dangerous open ocean, without a shark cage.
Ifans is playing John Bartlett, the Florida-based boat designer and captain of the catamaran that accompanied Diana as she swam. Bartlett strategically and meticulously planned and navigated Nyad’s swim though the Florida Straits, keenly aware of the impact of weather and ocean currents on her journey.

Earlier, Sundance announced that its 2022 edition will be hybrid. Most titles will be available online while their in-person festivities start up again in Park City. Their main slate has just gone live as well. Though the festival has a tendency to update their lineup as the festivities grow closer, their competition categories have at least been set in stone.
Naturally, we compiled all of the Asian and Asian diaspora-directed ones we could find so far. Like last year, most Asian titles tend to be in the documentaries. In the World Cinema Documentary Competition, at least 4 entries span from different corners of the continent: India (“All That Breathes”), Myanmar (“Midwives”), Lebanon (“Sirens”), and Israel (“Tantura”). 4 entries revolving around or by Asian diaspora filmmakers make their mark in the US Documentary Competition as well. “Free Chol Soo Lee”, “Jihad Rehab”, “Tiktok.Boom” and “The Exiles” cover fex-Al-Queda extremists, Tiananmen Square exiles, a wrongly-convicted Korean immigrant,...

Paramount Players has optioned eight novels from author Gregg Hurwitz’s “Marked Man” series of books, with plans to adapt them for a series of feature films.
The division of the ViacomCBS-owned studio, run by Jeremy Kramer, is eyeing lower budgets for the contemporary noir thrillers and specifically looking for diverse and perhaps first-time writers and directors to create the world.
Hurwitz is the bestselling author of “Orphan X” and will produce the films alongside Emmy winner Scott Frank, producer of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” The latter brought the books to the studio. While not connected by a central character, Hurwitz’s novels are among the most praised of the pot-boiler genre — usually invoking heinous crimes or geopolitical intrigue. The film adaptations are said to be connected thematically.
Full titles being optioned include “Do No Harm,” “The Crime Writer,” “Trust No One,” “They’re Watching,” “You’re Next,” “The Survivor,...

Born in New Zealand to a family of Chinese doctors, action maven Roseanne Liang describes herself as a “classic immigrant-child overachiever” who’d never questioned that she was destined to become a doctor until she got into medical school.
She deferred her acceptance for a year and decided to take classes that aligned more closely with her personal interests. “I was obsessed with Pixar and computer animation, so I did computer science and film theory,” says Liang, whose “Shadow in the Cloud” blends CG gremlins with a feminist action hero.
A big fan of Weta, Liang watches “Terminator 2” every year and dreams of directing a James Cameron-esque extravaganza.
Upon discovering her passion, she switched tracks and pursued a master’s in film. In school, “I was writing vampire and action movies,” she says, but at the advice of a professor, “I took a detour into moviemaking that was more accessible to me,...

‘Shadow in the Cloud’: Roseanne Liang Turned a Max Landis Script Into Her Own Feminist Monster Movie

Roseanne Liang is intentional about her ambitions: she wants to be a big-time action director, and what better way to prove her abilities than a rip-roaring genre movie that combines zippy action with plenty of winking humor? Enter the World War II-set “Shadow in the Cloud,” the Kiwi’s first action feature — she’s previously written and directed the winning rom-com “My Wedding and Other Secrets” and the lauded drama short “Do No Harm” — which functions as both a punchy midnight movie and a prime example of how an indie-sized budget can still deliver wild action.
Liang’s film makes it clear early on that it’s operating on its own wavelength, combining both a “war is hell” mentality alongside cheeky creature feature jokes. At the center of it all is Maude Garrett (Chloë Grace Moretz), a British flight officer zipping her way toward a jittery B-17.
