Jason Segel to Lead James Ponsoldt Thriller ‘Sponsor,’ Selling at Cannes
Image
Jason Segel has booked the lead role in a new psychological thriller from his “Shrinking” director James Ponsoldt.

Segel will be put through the ringer in “Sponsor,” a nail-biter about a drunk driver whose court-ordered recovery program introduces him to an enigmatic 12-step guru — one who slowly drags him into a “living hell.”

The package comes from Platinum Dunes, the creatives behind “A Quiet Place” and “The Purge,” and will launch sales this week out of the Cannes Film Festival via UTA Independent Film Group and MK2. Ponsoldt directs from a script he co-wrote with Segel.

“We set out to explore what happens when support becomes control — when the person you turn to for salvation slowly becomes your worst nightmare,” Segel and Ponsoldt said in joint statement. “After collaborating on ‘Shrinking,’ we were excited to channel that same emotional intimacy into a psychological thriller, where the stakes are darker, more dangerous,...

‘Absolute Dominion’ Review: You Gotta Fight! For the Right! Theoooo-logy!
Image
Okay, settle down and listen up, because this premise is a doozy. In the near future, religious extremism leads to so many terrorist attacks that all the world’s faiths finally agree to stop killing each other. Instead, they’ll each train one martial artist and hold a big fighting tournament. The faith that wins will take over the world, and all the others will be outlawed.

That’s Lexi Alexander’s “Absolute Dominion,” and if it sounds more like a Patton Oswalt routine than a real movie, Alexander seems to agree. The movie literally begins with Patton Oswalt, playing a very Patton Oswalt-ish influencer, suggesting the religious rumble off the top of his head. He seems just as surprised as anybody that it went viral, let alone got taken seriously. It says a lot about contemporary culture that whereas once our minds boggled trying to imagine how the dystopian...

The Long Walk Trailer Brings Stephen King's Bleakest Story To The Big Screen
Image
After spending years (and years) in development hell, one of Stephen King's earliest and most brutal novels is finally coming to the big screen — and we have proof! Lionsgate has released the first trailer for "The Long Walk," which hits theaters this fall. While King isn't one to pull punches, this is one of his most unflinchingly brutal works, with young men walking to their deaths while the last one standing wins a prize in a post-apocalyptic, grim vision of the future. Check it out for yourself above.

"The Long Walk" is very much akin to King's "Hunger Games," albeit without any YA flair. This is nitty, gritty, and very much R-rated. It perhaps makes sense that Francis Lawrence, known best for his work on "The Hunger Games" movies, is in the director's chair for this one. Lionsgate isn't giving us much by way of the plot, with the...

Christopher Landon’s ‘Drop’: A Suspense Thriller Reminiscent of Brian De Palma
Image
Have you ever used a dating app? Felt nervous about not knowing what to expect? Well, the protagonist of today’s movie is very nervous, especially when she starts receiving increasingly unsettling messages on her phone. Drop taps directly into this contemporary anxiety, transforming a fancy dinner date into a harrowing high-stakes hostage situation orchestrated entirely through the seemingly innocuous interface of a phone. The film presents a chillingly plausible nightmare where technology designed to connect people becomes a terrifying instrument of coercion and surveillance, forcing its protagonist into an impossible game where every notification could mean life or death.

Released with a PG-13 rating, Drop marks a return to the pure thriller genre for Christopher Landon, a filmmaker celebrated for skillfully blending horror and comedy in hits like Happy Death Day and Freaky. Leading the cast is Meghann Fahy, whose star rose rapidly after her Emmy-nominated role in The White Lotus,...

Universal is about to give Star Trek a long overdue theme park experience!
Image
Star Trek is getting a big new theme park experience that hopefully becomes a hit!

One would think that Star Trek would have a lot more presence in theme parks. After all, it’s an iconic property set in outer space with scores of alien worlds and species, all done with major special effects. If any property is screaming for an entire theme park land, it’s Star Trek.

Yet the franchise simply hasn’t found a footing in a regular theme park. A reason may be that Paramount owns the rights and lacks a park of its own to showcase Trek. There were a couple of bits like a Universal Studios show where audience volunteers were “beamed” onto the stage and could act out Trek-inspired scenes (including some as Klingons).

Star Trek: The Experience was a long-running Vegas attraction with recreations of Quark’s bar and the Promenade of Deep Space Nine.

'Sinners' Overtakes Every Underworld Film to Become One of the Biggest Vampire Movies Ever Made
Image
Having already become one of the 100 highest-grossing horror movies in domestic box office history, Ryan Coogler's Sinners is climbing up another list. It's now among the top 15 highest-grossing vampire movies ever made, having overtaken every film in the Underworld franchise. More impressively, it's set to drive a stake through the heart of none other than Morbius. Sinners achieved this feat in less than a week of release. The movie exceeded projections in its box office debut, and is expected to retain its crown in its sophomore frame. Widely hailed as a much-needed win for original, big-screen filmmaking, Sinners is the success story of the year so far.

With $64 million domestically and another $15 million from overseas markets, Sinners is passing the $80 million mark at the worldwide box office as we speak. It's set to break into the list of the 80 highest-grossing horror movies of all time when it overtakes The Purge,...

‘Rick and Morty’ Season 8: I’m Convinced Evil Morty Will Be Returning Soon After a Major Rick Revelation Changes Everything
Image
For many seasons now, there has been underlying tension between the protagonists of Rick and Morty. Although the two characters have had a kind of banter throughout the series, it seems to have taken on a resentful tone from Morty’s side. This was first set up as far back as the first season, with the very first Citadel episode.

With the trailer for the eighth season having finally been released, it seems possible that the show will go down this storyline again. However, the direction it could be taking with Evil Morty could be very different this time.

A Morty always needs a Rick…or do they?

With the release of the eighth season approaching, Rick and Morty have finally released the trailer, and it is quite insightful. Among many hints about what is to come, two specific scenes felt out of place considering the overall story of the show.

Image
The “Ready or Not” sequel starts production Monday, April 21 — that’s today — and Searchlight Pictures shares new details about the follow-up to the 2019 box office hit.

The sequel, titled “Ready or Not: Here I Come,” will film in Toronto this spring, with Radio Silence directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett returning for a second helping of the social survival horror comedy starring Samara Weaving.

Weaving reprises her role as Grace, who in the original film found herself being hunted by her new in-laws at her family’s posh estate. Joining Weaving and the previously announced Kathryn Newton are horror movie icons Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elijah Wood in undisclosed roles. But there’s more: Shawn Hatosy (“The Pitt”), Néstor Carbonell (“The Dark Knight”), Kevin Durand, and David Cronenberg also join the ensemble.

Kevin Bacon's Slick New Horror Series Has Taken Over Prime Video's Charts
Image
Amazon Prime Video is actively being dominated by one Mr. Kevin Bacon. The actor, best known for his roles in classics such as "Footloose" and "Tremors" (among many others), stars in the newly-unveiled Blumhouse horror-comedy series "The Bondsman." Though the show hasn't been out very long, it's pretty safe to declare it a big hit in the early going.

The series debuted all eight episodes of its first season on Prime Video at once on Thursday, April 3. Though certain shows get the weekly release treatment on the streamer, such as "The Boys," Amazon decided to go with a Netflix-style binge dump for this one. It paid off, as the series is currently the most-watched on all of Prime Video, per FlixPatrol. At the moment, it even ranks above the likes of "The Wheel of Time" and "Reacher", which just debuted its season 3 finale. That makes this a big winner for Blumhouse and Amazon,...

Wolf Man Ott Release Date Update: When & Where To Stream Christopher Abbott & Julia Garner Starrer?

Here’s When & Where You Can Stream Wolf Man Online! ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Ready to howl at the moon from the comfort of your couch? Wolf Man is clawing its way onto streaming, and it’s not your average werewolf flick. This 2025 horror reboot takes a big bite out of the genre, with Saw writer Leigh Whannell sinking his teeth into the director’s chair.

Originally meant to be part of Universal’s abandoned Dark Universe, this beast of a film has transformed into something far more personal and hairy. Centered on a devoted husband and father cursed with lycanthropy, Wolf Man howls with tension, heart, and fur-flying action.

While the box office wasn’t exactly howling in delight, the film boasts a sharp cast and a darker, moodier vibe than your typical monster mash. If you missed it in theaters (or just prefer not to be scared in public...

Pulse on Netflix release date, time, preview
Image
Are you a fan of Grey's Anatomy and are looking for something new to obsess over? If so, you'll be glad to know that Netflix is set to release its own medical drama that looks to be just as addictive. In fact, the show is already being referred to as the streaming service's take on Grey’s Anatomy. That's a pretty big claim, but early buzz suggests it might just live up to the hype.

The show is called Pulse, and it's the streamer's first-ever English-language medical series. That being said, there's a significant amount of anticipation surrounding its release, and people are eager to see if it can capture the same magic that made Grey's Anatomy a global phenomenon. I guess we'll have to wait until it releases to see if Pulse can live up to the comparisons, but this is definitely not a show you want to miss!

Set against the politically volatile backdrop of Venezuela, it follows a former special forces soldier, Gunner (Grillo), who is drawn back into action to rescue his kidnapped niece, Julia (Brolin), a journalist entangled in a web of corruption involving oil smuggling, private military contractors, and high-level political figures. The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 Channels the Purge, Except with Chenford’s Situationship

Did anyone order The Purge?

It seems that The Rookie Season 7 is having some fun paying homage to some classic, fan-favorite films and concepts.

Fresh off a “Speed” episode, The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 uses its April Fool’ s-themed hour to nod at The Purge franchise.

(Disney/Mike Taing)

What do you expect of an hour of The Rookie devoted to a holiday filled with fun and pranks? The stakes during this one were incredibly low; it was a classic filler episode, and honestly, there’s not much to unpack.

Because we were down some rookies, and Miles, the poor chap, somehow got stuck in traffic court or something, the hour introduced us to taller Seth.

‘The Rookie’ Star Shawn Ashmore Teases ‘The Purge’ Tribute in ‘April Fools’ Episode: ‘Expect the Unexpected’
Image
Fresh off of last week’s episode, “Speed,” which paid tribute to the ’90s action classic of the same name, “The Rookie” pays homage to yet another familiar film in Season 7, Episode 12: “April Fools.” But despite what you might expect, the series doesn’t tip its hat to a comedy. Instead, the April 1 episode embraces the citywide chaos of hit horror franchise “The Purge” for both comedic and dramatic effect, dropping the Mid-Wilshire crew into a prank gone horribly wrong. How wrong? “Potential mass casualty event,” as the preview portends.

Ahead of the episode debut, “The Rookie” star Shawn Ashmore told TheWrap that viewers should “expect the unexpected” when they tune in. “I think that’s how I felt when I was watching the episode,” Ashmore said. “I was like, ‘Oh, I know what’s going to happen,’ and the journey was really fun. So, just enjoy that ride.

The 10 Best Horror Movies About Aliens
Image
One of the very first narrative films, Georges Méliès's "A Trip to the Moon," is about aliens. Sure, everyone remembers that shot of a rocket ship crashing into the eye of the man in the moon, but as the narrative unfurls, the astronauts meet a group of people who live up there. It's not scary, exactly, but there are chase scenes, and in the end, the astronauts bring one of the Selenites back down to Earth with them. Cinema has been obsessed with aliens ever since.

Of course, aliens aren't just the stuff of science fiction. They can also be found throughout the horror genre. After all, there are a lot of ways to make aliens scary. What does an otherworldly visitor look like? Is it scarier if it's something unfamiliar and hideous, or if it looks uncannily like we do? If and when the aliens visit, will they be desperate for our resources?...

15 Great Horror Movies With High Body Counts
Image
High body counts tend to be a trademark of slasher and exploitation films, which are popular horror subgenres, but there are all kinds of movies with shocking death tolls. From crime tales like The Purge to zombie movies like Dawn of the Dead, a high tally makes perfect sense in the context of these stories. Add an apocalypse into the mix, and that could very well be the end of humanity entirely.

Some of the greatest high-body-count horror movies leave a lot to the imagination, while others revel in the bloody display. Regardless of viewer preference, there's something to be said for horror movies that leave a trail of bodies in their wake that fans of the genre won't ever forget.

Updated on March 28, 2025, by Arthur Goyaz: Most horror movies feature a high body count, but some films go to unbelievable lengths to depict catastrophic massacres - some of them...

Frank Grillo’s Espionage Thriller With a ‘Dark Knight’ Star Finds Surprise Success on a New Streamer
Image
Not long after one of Frank Grillo’s more recent movies climbed to the top of streaming charts, he has another movie following the same model. Grillo stars alongside Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) in Mr-9: Do or Die, the 2023 espionage thriller following an elite Bangladesh spy who teams up with a CIA operative to bring down an international crime syndicate. Mr-9: Do or Die began streaming on Starz not long ago, and the film has wasted no time becoming one of the more popular movies on the platform, sitting at #9 at the time of writing. Mr-9: Do or Die received an extremely limited theatrical release two years ago, grossing less than $500,000 globally, and the film earned a 61% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Grillo has been acting for more than 30 years now, but his first major role came from starring alongside Liam Neeson in The Grey, the 2011 survival thriller from Joe Carnahan.

The Woman In The Yard Looks To Resurrect That Vintage Blumhouse Horror Vibe
Image
As far as modern horror goes, there are few (if any) names that rival Blumhouse. As the studio behind Jordan Peele's modern masterpiece "Get Out," "The Purge" franchise, one of M. Night Shyamalan's biggest movies ever in "Split," successful franchise revivals such as the "Halloween" trilogy, and monster adaptations like "Five Nights at Freddy's," the house that Jason Blum built has become a go-to name for horror fans. Now the studio is seeking to deliver another original hit in the form of "The Woman in the Yard."

As Blumhouse grew in recent years, they hit a bit of a cold streak, with recent films such as "The Exorcist: Believer," "Imaginary," "Afraid," and others failing to deliver critically and commercially. The studio's latest effort, which hails from director Jaume Collet-Serra, aims to change that narrative by bringing back that old-school Blumhouse vibe. I was fortunate enough to visit the...

Frank Grillo's 'Long Gone Heroes' is Streaming Success of Paramount+
Image
Frank Grillo is a go-to star when looking for a gritty action movie, and his films may not always hit the mark for critics, but audiences still love to watch them when they turn up on new streaming platforms. This has been proven in the case of Long Gone Heroes, which, more than a month after topping the Tubi chart, is now sitting at number two on Paramount+’s Top 10 chart.

While Grillo has appeared in several big franchises, such as The Purge, as Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now is part of the new Dcu, Grillo has delivered many big, masculine action movies for a long line of masculine action movies that fans just cannot get enough of. However, with all that in mind, Long Gone Heroes is probably not one that will sit on the top of anyone’s personal list of Grillo greats, but is...

Netflix Users Are Obsessed With A Mind-Bending 2019 Sci-Fi Thriller
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Netflix is once again turning a former theatrical flop into a streaming hit. 2019's "Don't Let Go," which stars Oscar nominee David Oyelowo ("Selma") and Storm Reid ("A Wrinkle in Time"), has found its audience more than five years after it failed to catch on during its original release. This is an interesting case where success may well be better late than never.

"Don't Let Go" has been rising through Netflix's top 10 most-watched movies list as of late and is currently sitting at number four on the streamer's charts, per FlixPatrol. It's even trending above other Netflix originals such as "Kinda Pregnant" and "Honeymoon Crasher." Not bad for a movie with a $5 million budget that made only $5 million at the box office in late summer 2019. But that's the power of Netflix, which generates more revenue than the entire global box office combined.

Prepare to scrub in: Netflix's new medical drama series has a release date and first-look images
Image
Fresh off the success of Max's hit original medical drama procedural The Pitt, Netflix will next stop up to the plate with its first English-language medical procedural Pulse. While Max's breakout series follows a team of emergency room doctors throughout one 15-hour shift, Pulse takes a page out of Grey's Anatomy's book and finds the doctors mixing business with pleasure.

On Feb. 18, Netflix formally announced Pulse complete with a release date and first-look images of Willa Fitzgerald, Colin Woodell, Justina Machado and the rest of the cast in action. All 10 episodes of the first season will drop on Thursday, April 3 on Netflix. Unlike The Pitt, Pulse isn't a medical drama you will have to wait to watch weekly. We'll be able to binge the full season all at once.

If you're a fan of medical drama series and can't wait to watch the genre continue to takeover the streaming...

Netflix’s First Medical Drama Series ‘Pulse’ Set for April 2025 Release – First Looks Revealed
Image

One of the projects we’ve been crowing about coming up on Netflix in 2025 is the streamer’s first-ever medical procedural series, Pulse. The series has had the lid lifted on it with an April 2025 release date set. Here are all those first looks and a recap of everything we know so far.

First announced publicly in March 2024 (although in development for at least a year before that), the series marks a first for Netflix, at least when it comes to its English-language programming. Although it’s licensed plenty of medical dramas over the years, it’s never made one itself—at least not a procedural.

The series is created by veteran writer and producer Carlton Cuse,...

One Night Only: Anyone But You director Will Gluck to helm a quirky comedy that sounds like The Purge for premarital sex
Image
Will Gluck, the director of the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell comedy Anyone But You, is spicing up cinemas with his next project, One Night Only. Universal Pictures snagged the rights to Gluck’s latest comedy, which boasts a Black List script from Travis Braun. In addition to directing One Night Only, Gluck will produce through his Olive Bridge Entertainment studio alongside Olive Bridge vice president Jacqueline Monetta.

After reading the synopsis, One Night Only reminds me of The Purge, but for sexy times. Let me explain. In One Night Only, “two strangers, a man, and a woman, scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal in their society.” Don’t make a “We live in a society joke,” Steve. You’ll never forgive yourself.

Phew. Okay, One Night Only is a curious screenplay from Travis Braun, whose credits...

20 Years Ago, Lena Headey Starred in a Criminally Underrated Rom-Com That’s as Bold as It Is Beautiful
Image
Between her prominent roles in projects like Game of Thrones, 300, and both The Purge and Terminator franchises, Lena Headeyis a certified badass when it comes to playing powerful leading characters. Headey's time as Cersei Lannister alone showcases her skill at developing a cruel, intimidating screen presence, which is why it's still surprising to learn the actor's legacy on film is as varied as it is compelling. In particular, those searching for Headey's softer side can do no better than Imagine Me & You, the 2005 rom-com that sees Headey trade her crown for a flower shop. Directed by Ol Parker, who later went on to direct Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Imagine Me & You offers the same blend of humor and heartwarming charm, delivering one of the most underrated rom-coms of the early 2000s in the process.

Frank Grillo's Forgotten 2024 Action Movie 'Long Gone Heroes' Is Streaming on Paramount+
Image
Frank Grillo has carved out a reputation for gritty, hard-hitting roles that have seen him jumping up the rankings of go-to action heroes. As well as appearances in big franchises such as The Purge, as Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now being part of the new Dcu, Grillo has delivered a long line of masculine action movies that fans just cannot get enough of. Now one of his 2024 offerings, Long Gone Heroes, is heading to the top of the Tubi free streaming chart.

However, with all that in mind, Long Gone Heroes is probably not one that will sit on the top of anyone’s personal list of Grillo greats – does anyone have that list? – but it is certainly proving a valuable asset to Tubi. The synopsis for the movie reads:

“Gunner, a special forces soldier who has witnessed the darkest side of country and combat, is forced...

M3GAN 2.0 Is Ready to Slay, But Can She Dance Her Way to Saving a Blumhouse?
Image
Quick LinksM3GAN 2.0 Is Leaning Into Its Predecessor's Kitschy ElementsBlumhouse Has Been Struggling at the Box OfficeWhy M3GAN 2.0 Has to Be a Hit

M3GANwas a surprise horror hit in 2023, with the movie becoming a veritable meme with its success. Now, the first footage of its follow-up has finally been released, and it's already making all the right moves. This is exactly what the production company behind the film needs, especially given recent releases.

Blumhouse was once synonymous with the horror genre in the 2010s, with the studio seeing several major hits that scared up a lot of money at the box office. In the past few years, however, there's been a saddening case of diminishing returns and a tarnished reputation for the studio. M3GAN 2.0 can help turn that around, but if it fails to achieve this, it can potentially do even more damage.

M3GAN 2.0 Is...
