The Verdict is in - Primal is a Masterpiece!
jimharbin8 August 2022
Genndy is quietly proving that he is the master animator of our time! This series has now become legend. No one else is conducting story telling at this level and no animator is even coming close. I still can't over the fact that that this brilliant story telling is being done with merely breathtaking visuals, haunting music and impeccable direction - and with virtually no dialog. Taken as a whole, it has to be considered one of the most compelling pieces of work for any director -live action or animated.

I have always been a fan but now I find myself for Genndy's next personal project.

This is a MUST WATCH. And I don't say that very often.
julianmarku7 August 2022
Short version: GO WATCH IT! Enough said.

Long version: This series is probably the best original new thing I have seen in a long time. Genndy Tartakovsky proves that he is the animation story genius of our times and I genuinely hope that HBO will give Genndy a call and be like: Genndy: So how many projects do you want me to- ?

HBO: Yes.

So, this series is freaking amazing and it is a crowd pleaser for fans of Samurai Jack and anime!

I binged the whole first season and I can honestly say that there was maybe one episode I would go back to watch(better to binge the whole season again). I watch this episode and I was like: I want to see that again. And so I did... again. And again.

And after that I went online to see if there is any Primal merchandise on sale and I am an adult, that is how good it is.

You will feel the every emotion you have in this episode. Drama, tragedy, excitement, joy, and sympathy. I even laughed at some point. Very well written and executed.

AMAZING!
LeonGoodyear-026288 August 2022
What an absolutely spectacular episode. After the slow pace of the previous episode the brutality and action was needed. After the first season of primal being episodic it was very interesting to see plot continuance especially at the end with seemingly the first time there have been consequences to Spear and Fangs killings.

Spear and Fang: We are not trapped in your village, you are trapped with us.
seiyafuma26 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was a great detail for me that the fog sequence had the same design as the massacre of the spear family. I guess it's a way to switch roles, but I don't think it's that simple.

After all, Vikings enslave others, I can't say I felt sorry, but I'm not exactly happy either. I think the Viking king surely did the same thing in other villages, so I don't think any of them are the bad guys in the story.

You can't feel bad for either side this is just survival of the fittest that's how it was in the times of that era.

Another mess is that they seem to worship some kind of deity that seems to force them or something else to obtain slaves because the people of the blue warriors did not have slaves and these must be a difference of cults.

Roller coaster of all emotions
ehu6458 August 2022
I've never seen such a tv series episode. Not a single word can be understandable but you know exactly every single detail, no words needed. Joy, hatered, anger, love, despair, excitement every emotion in 20 minutes.

Genndy Tartakovsky didn't used a single word to create such a masterpiece but it there will be not enough words to describe this episode.

Top 3 as an episode of a tv series maybe the best...

Karma is malevolent.

Quite frankly I feel bad that the boy was killed during the battle, that moment really shocked me to be honest. However, it was a choice for them to be slavers, so I can't say I pity anything else about their fate.

P. S. Since s1e1 everytime there is a battle I am praying that the dinosaur doesn't die!! :D Live Dino live!!!

Another stunning episode! The Red Mist rivals the Red Wedding!
mgamble92 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
OK, I'm the hugest Primal fanboy first off. This episode had it all and the violence was right up there with season one's Rage of the Ape Men. But this was also one of the most thought provoking episodes too. I could not stop thinking about that annihilated village of humans who enslaved others and how complex the situation is. Sure it is easy to judge them and say they enslaved others so they deserve their gruesome fate. The complexity is when they revealed the tribal family's love for one another and deep feeling of loss. It makes you think further about America's history of slavery and how we condemn the entire South for it. Were the slavers completely oblivious to the pain they caused their slaves? Were there some who cared for the well being of the slaves? Was it a culture of cruelty to outsiders? Did they actually enjoy the suffering they caused? There are so many awesome layers to what is going on in Primal I will just have to fanboy for the rest of my days.

So extreme
umlaziking10 August 2022
This episode right here was extremely brutal...spear and fang are truly a force to be reckoned with, the way they tore every single one of their enemies was on a whole other level of gruesome action. A really great episode and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Mayhem and havoc in a relentless act of destroying a system of oppression
Shadowboy_25cm10 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Spear and Fang are forces of nature, captive relics of an ancient world breaking free against their modern world oppressors.

Now, it's war.

It's a fight against slavery, a fight against a modern culture and a fight against an upgraded system, that doesn't tolerate ancient relics or minor developped cultures and enslaves them.

This episode shows the relentless fight of the ancient world versus the modern world leading in the extinction of a whole community. Even children die and Spear has to deal with his own demons, pain and feelings.

He lost his familiy and now, it's about saving Mira and freeing himself and all the others from oppression and slavery. On the other hand, the leader of the modern viking-like culture has to protect his people against any threat.

The motivations are clear and because we have followed Spear and Fang in their odyssey, we identify with them and want them to get free.

The violence is over the top, extremely gory, cruel and relentless. Between anger and hate, there is room for some small emotional and moral details, like Spear not wanting to fight against a child, but in the end: it's all about survival and revenge.

I felt the pain of the father and husband burying his dead wife and child in a ritual viking funeral and the reflections of the fire in his eyes seeking revenge for his loss.

Spear, once the victim, is now the offender and he set a seed of hate and anger by himself making this episode psychologically simple-minded, but very effective.

Why doesn't this episode get 10 points by me?

Because of its clumsy execution regarding the continuity of the fight scenes and the injuries of Spear and Fang. The more Spear and Fang are injured, the more the get into Berzerker-mode. Ok.

But: Fang is heavy injured several times by bear claws, spears, axes and arrows, but but then he heals miracleously the next scene. The same with Spear. Very clumsy and taking away a lot of the impact, this episode should have had.

Even under the mildest of circumstances, this episode unfortunately doesn't deserve a 10.

Mindless violence porn
interestingstuff31 December 2022
This episodes takes an already idiotic show to an extreme level and puts it among one of the most moronic things on TV. This is probably why it's rated so highly because its target audience can't tell what's good and what's bad.

In this episode one guy armed with a sword DESTROYS and entire army of hundreds of well armed and experienced soldiers without suffering a single scratch. It's like all super heroes combined + God in one guy. He literally butchers every single one of them, even when hundreds of them surround him with no path to escape.

Just when you think a show couldn't get more moronic, it gets more moronic and all the idiots rate it 10/10 because that's the exact target audience for this moronic nonsense.

Are we supposed to care about the clan who enslave people like it's nothing?
yu-7660117 August 2022
I don't think so.

Btw they are the one who tried to attack the protagonists first when they had done nothing.

So forgive me if I find it really hard to care about them.

Maybe I'm the only one.

This episode ruined an otherwise great show.
Discord_Days13 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I liked Primal, it is unique with its almost non-existant dialogue and managed to captivate me each episode, wanting to know more about Spear & Fang's adventures and their how their relationship develops.

Unfortunately this all went down the drain with "The Red Mist".

From previously (for the most part) trying to excercise caution when fighting, the duo goes on a total rampage in this episode. It's just one big slaughter, and Spear seems to shrug off the ten arrows he was hit with like it was nothing, while Fang was probably hit by 20-30 arrows/throwing spears, yet there are little to no consequences.

In comparison in Season 1 we had a whole episode (Scent of Prey) dedicated to Fang recuperating and healing her wounds after the battle with the ape-men in the arena.

I told my friend jokingly that this episode has to be written by someone else, and I later found out that this was indeed the case. In my opinion this Mark Andrews did an awful job and removed parts of what made Primal unique, and turned the episode into another braindead cartoon about blood and gore.

The only way I'll finish the show after this episode is if I force myself to watch it. Before "The Red Mist" this wasn't an issue and I could barely get enough of "Primal".

Amazing, brutal, emotional.
danmako-7583031 August 2022
I very rarely review anything, but this episode was just superb.

The action was brutal, and the emotional fallout well handled. There is visceral feel to the movement, and the action feels impactful. The only criticism I would give is some continuity skipping, with injuries not really represented in later scenes.

Though this episode is a standout, I recommend watching all the previous before jumping in, it really works because of the build up of emotional investment and stakes from the rest of the story.

This series is excellent (especially considering the sparse dialogue), and I love the storytelling. WATCH IT.

Brutal episode...
kimxboxlive10 August 2022
This episode was at times hard to watch. Absolutely brutal... Ouff.

I enjoyed Season 1. But season 2 so far is such a massive improvement - it's almost so that I'd recommend a first time watcher to view only the first & last episodes of season 1 (all the necessary backstory) - then go into season 2.

Antagonists are more interesting than the protagonists
chharr8 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Primal is an amzing series that stands in stark contrast to the many contemporary stories that are overly intent on deconstrucing traditional narratives but this episode was a miss in an otherwise brilliant series.

Seeing the protagonists slaughter brave men, women and children who are aesthetically and culturally more interesting was a strange narrative decision. Spear is entirely sullied by this episode and it damages his character going foward.

There is a righteous vengenace narrative thread signposted at the end and to the episode's credit a father's grief is given honourable treatment but I would be very happy to see Spear's demise now.
