Great debut.
There is something really charming about this little film, even if it does feel a little short, and a little contrived (which films aren't?).
Subaru is a great character who is pitifully hilarious. Living in his teenage wasteland, being both rude and obnoxious to his Mum and falling in and out with his best friend.
He has no father figure, and doesn't wish to take on the baton of bread winner himself. Subaru is increasingly lost and lonely until he chances upon a situation, that offers the chance of redemption from his self deprecation.
A funny film that explores alienation and the darker side and mundanity of suburbia.
