Ike & Tina in the Hood
vernelleteague10 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Detroit indie films are getting better for sure, and I celebrate Mena Monroe's projects; however, this felt very "What's Love Got To Do With It" in the hood without the singing career to me. Some of the scenes were variations of Ike and Tina, with a bunch of drug dealing and hoes mixed in. The storyline could have been better developed instead of just giving us these out of nowhere situations with no backstory. Emory being randomly killed before he could tell her he was a drug dealer, and Scott turning into Ike Turner randomly with no real signs of his insanity besides the first girlfriend getting her hair done with shades on and the facial expression he gave Harlem's mother after she mushed him in the forehead. Once he starts abusing her, literally no one close to her addresses the elephant in the room in a real way which is almost unrealistic. You know people love to give advice whether you want them to or not!

On one hand, I can understand these movies showing a glimpse into the underworld of the streets...It's just getting old and stereotypical. The disloyal men and hoes, the game, the money, the women putting up with all types of BS for the money, the cautionary tale. The BBL's, beauty salons and bundles. The same hood story told 100 different ways...If you've seen one then you've seen them all. I'm still rooting for these indie producers being that I'm from the Midwest, I'm just praying they broaden their horizons past the hood. Their production quality is improving from project to project though I can say that!

More Black Trauma Played Out As Normal
stellbread8 July 2023
Gee, I didn't know black people were so oversexed and that every other word they use is profane. Wait... they aren't and they don't. But here they do. If you take out the profanity and gratuitous sex scenes you'd have a Tyler Perry film (sans Pollyannish ending). I don't know which is worse. That same ol' trope-abused and illogical sista has to fight her way through her personal crisis and her sadistic so-called "lover," blah-blah-blah. This film has it all-slaps, interchangeability between the b-word and the h-word, and a graphic rape scene. Monroe (who also wrote and directed) is Harlem, a widow whose husband was shot to death during a robbery. Now looking for new love, she meets Scott Da Rock (Fazekas) and after his charm offensive she falls for him. He's a hound and an abuser. This film is full of plot holes and is downright horrible. Is this what passes for a chick flick nowdays? Some reviewers must either be enamored with seeing black faces on-screen, or seeing black people on screen conforming to the worst stereotypes. Otherwise, how this got a 7.5 baffles me.

Self Gratuitous Mess
kkcannady9 July 2023
This was the worse movie or can I call it that. It had no true storyline. The main character/ lead went from a loving wife to a hoe and I still don't understand how.

All the time I kept wondering why would they cast this girl as the main lead...then I realized she's the one flipping the bill. Acting is definitely not her calling.

The transitions from scene to scene were bad; the characters and the relationships were very undeveloped. The plots and motives made no sense.

All the women had the exact same body, and very sexualized. The movie used language of 2020's but supposed to be set in the 2000.

I can't...

The 8.0 rating is a lie. One star, because zero isn't an option.

Warning: Spoilers
Mena Monroe is a horrible actress. I do admire that she has her own movie studio. Bravo. Because acting isn't her strength. I stuck with this movie, but it was too long and very painful.

Mena/Harlem is speaking to Scott her potential boyfriend and mentions her ex-husband, Emory. The same ex-husband that was killed in a carjacking. They were never divorced. Later on, she remembers they weren't divorced when she's speaking to a bank manager, who's also a realtor who not only found a commercial building, he can also find her a gated residential community as well as her next boyfriend if she likes. A Jack-of-All Trades.

Someone on this set, should have caught this major error. But, they move right along. Low budget movie, no time to correct the scene. Until the scene with the jack-of all trades, who flirts with her after she purchased a building in ATL. I think it's selling weaves in a shop. It wasn't explained and I didn't care.

There were a lot of plot holes that were wrapped up, which was good as her low down friend, Low, which is aptly named, because she is low down explains to Scott that Harlem has money, she even sold Marvin Gaye's house that she's always loved as a child. Emory purchased the house as a surprise. After Emory was killed, Harlem sold the house and moved in with her mother. Postpartum hit's Harlem hard, so she ignores her son and her mother takes care of him.

Scott is a drug dealer and he's abusive. Since he has money, all of Harlem's friends ignore the signs, know that he's a monster and the bruises. Even Harlem. Which has money, so it didn't make sense to stay, because she didn't love him after the repeated verbal and physical abusive. She had a devoted mother, so it wasn't like an issue of what some abusive people (men can also be abused) face, where the abused doesn't have money or a support system.

Scott in turn also has plot holes to fill, he tells Low that him and Emory were drug dealing partners and he had Emory killed, when Emory wanted to go solo or got to big. I don't remember. Which explained the duffle bag of money as H & E celebrate their new house. How Scott was able to find the carjacker as a 'push present' to keep his family intact five years later. Scott kills the carjacker, because H can't.

Scott's ex-girlfriend even tries to tell her to leave Scott, because of his temper, but the lure of money, stupidity and we have to keep this plot going, keeps Harlem and her ex-husband's son. I mean deceased husband's son, staying. Until she finally leaves and buys property in another city or state. It was never explained where she lived, only where she was moving too. There was also a gay make up artist associate that worked in Low's hair salon which is where H also worked at and first met Scott and his ex-girlfriend. I didn't feel that H and the salon makeup artist were friends. Because they only had a few scene together. A good or best friend, they would have been closer. He also dies of AIDS.

As Harlem moves on. Forgets her children and her friends. Her character was awful. No loyalty to anyone. I think she grieved for a year and then fell for a murderous drug dealer, with hair prettier than hers.

Her mother, Ms. Cheryl was a hypocrite. That back and forth about staying with Scott, leaving Scott and back to staying with Scott and then leaving Scott...because he's crazy. Harlem's mother didn't like Scott in the beginning so this back and forth from short scene of love to hate to love to hate to the next scene was dumb.

The biggest what the what moment, which there is no way that this movie has 8 out of 10 stars.

Harlem is finally leaving this abusive relationship, she throws a going away party. She post this event on social media, which Low shows Scott while in her underwear and invites the abusive ex. I think this was also a script error too. Harlem didn't invite Scott, but the mother and Scott, both mentions the invite. AKA. The ex-husband, not dead husband.

Back to the mother leaving a crazy and abusive ex alone with her grandchildren at the party. Harlem wasn't a good mother in this movie at all. The kids were a forgotten background.

In the end. Scott kills Harlem and Emory's son at the going away party. Scott also kills Harlem's cousin, Channa who was sleeping with Scott. H's buddy Low is also murdered. Both Channa and Low kept telling Scott to let Harlem go and be with them, even though they know Scott is unstable. They messed around and found out. Low was shot several times in the driveway and only shown with a fake looking bullet wound in the shoulder. Harlem was also shot several times, not shown, but a fake looking bullet wound in her temple.

There's a flashback of the good and bad of Harlem's life. I think there's a voice over. I didn't remember. The mother grabbing Harlem's gun to kill Scott and Scott committing suicide in front of her with a smile on his face and a note that he wrote to his and Harlem's daughter True about blah..blah..keeping the family or some nonsense.

As I was way pass done with the nonsense of a movie.

Must watch all the way through.

Warning: Spoilers
Big fan of this woman here. I waited for the plot twist so long and like a high taking over the body it finally came. I will not put the spoilers in her, but what I will say is I like everybit of the movie. I can tell the girl took her time in her story line. Ms. Mena you may never read this, but I want you to know damn what any other critic has to say. I like the way you wrote it which as a man evoked some powerful emotion which is what storytelling is supposed to do. The scene where Harlem's mom put her finger to the boyfriends head had me losing my mind as I hate the audacity black women feel its ok to do things like that, but more importantly my guy kept his composure and hit her where it hurt. Keep doing your thing girl you inspire even men like me that is up and coming. I acted in and produced The Other Dude by Roye Strawder, and will just say if you watch it. I hope you get a laugh, and I promise it will be better on the upcoming movie Strangle( 2023)

If I cant- Black Cinema
wmcghee-704691 August 2023
This movie was a little too much for me watch, because I can not relate even as being African American. However, it makes me appreciative for my upbringing.

The plot of the movie could actually be based on a true story with a little extra added, because I have seen stuff like this on the news that regards family violence.

Normally, whenever I watch a movie I can like predict what's going to happen but this movie was unpredictable. I felt a little traumatized at the ended and cried.

I won't criticize the cast acting or anything because it's Tubi and it's FREE! Heck! I thought about making a Tubi movie once and I never acted a day in my life. Overall, I think all of the cast members did really well.

One of the best movies i've watched in a long time! Give us more...
bevybae11 July 2023
This is one of the best movies ive watched in a long time. It was so good I had to search the director to find some of the other movies SHE directed. The design the style the culture was so reflective of African American pop culture. Mena Monroe you are talented. I felt like I knew each character personally. I even stopped midway through the movie to see how many minuntes were left because I didn't want it to end. Lol. The actors were amazing. For a long time i've been hesistent to watch African American films because of past experience they were either low budget with a terrible story line or high budget with no substance. This move is a masterpeice had me on the edge of my seat. Its up there with the Belly's and State Property type movies.
