Andrew Rannells and Katie Brayben will reprise their roles in the musical Tammy Faye on Broadway this fall.
The production, which features music by Elton John, will play the newly renovated Palace Theater starting Oct. 19, with an opening night on Nov. 14. This is the first full production announced for the refurbished theater, which closed in 2018 for renovations and has since been raised 30 feet in the air and refurbished with a new lobby, marquee and backstage area.
Ben Platt is scheduled to play a three-week concert at the theater from May 28 through June 15.
Brayben won an Olivier Award for her portrayal of televangelist Tammy Faye in London. She also won an Olivier for her role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and appeared in Girl From the North Country and King Charles III on the West End, among other stage roles.
Rannells, known for his starring role in The Book of Mormon and recently in Gutenberg!

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! And hey, we all love the show’s star, Benedict Wong.

Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain has to chase directors for movie roles - because they fear they won't be able to "afford" her.The 46-year-old actress won an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for 2021's 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye' and has starred in blockbusters including 'The Help', 'Zero Dark Thirty', 'Interstellar', 'The Martian' and 'Molly's Game'.However, that doesn't mean she is inundated with work offers - quite the opposite. She told Radio Times magazine: "I think that you reach a level of success where the very interesting filmmakers stop calling. Because they are like, 'I'm going to wait for ever for an answer. They're going to string me along, they'll sign up, and then they'll ditch it at the last minute for something else that makes them more money.' So the weird thing is that now it's more me seeking them out.

The estate of Tammy Wynette’s fifth and final husband, George Richey, has sued Showtime and one of Wynette’s daughters over the “villainous” portrayal of Richey in the 2022 miniseries George and Tammy.
Richey died in 2010, 12 years after Wynette’s 1998 death. A year after Richey died, Georgette Jones — the daughter of Wynette and fellow country legend George Jones — published a book titled The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George that made significant accusations against Richey, including that he allegedly destroyed a Wynette will that would have left...

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” led all series at Monday night’s Astra TV Awards, scoring six trophies — including best streaming drama series. HBO’s “Succession” was close behind with five wins, including best cale drama series.
Organized by the newly renamed Hollywood Creative Alliance, the also-redubbed Astra TV Awards were formerly known as the Hca TV Awards. The Astras are unique in separating broadcast, cable and streaming into their own categories.
In broadcast, the biggest winner of the night was ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” which won four prizes — including best broadcast network comedy series.
Also on Monday, “The Boys” creator Eric Kripke was presented with the TV Icon award, while composer Ariel Marx (“A Small Light”) was given the Artisan Spotlight award. Comedian Aida Rodriguez hosted the event, which was produced by Diga Studios and Content.23 Media and held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

The run-up to Halloween proved to be a good time to release a new version of Goosebumps.
The series based on R.L. Stine’s beloved books broke into the top 10 overall for the week of Oct. 16-22. The show, which streams on both Disney+ and Hulu, racked up 594 million minutes of viewing for its second week of release, marking a rare non-Marvel or Star Wars original series entry for Disney+ in Nielsen’s rankings (being available on two platforms helped, as well).
Nielsen, incidentally, classified Goosebumps as an acquired show the previous week, apparently because of it being shared across the two platforms, before switching it to the originals column going forward.
The Fall of the House of Usher kept the No. 1 overall spot for the second straight week, growing by 19 percent over its opening to 1.47 billion minutes of viewing. Suits remained strong, recording its 18th straight week above a...

Looking at PVOD and Netflix charts this week reveals some significant findings.
The just-debuted “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” tops all lists in its first week of release as assumed. That comes 90 days after its release. Did theaters benefit? Not really.
Netflix has a top 10 with eight studio titles, six from Universal, including #1 “Tammy” with Melissa McCarthy. But the big news here? “Fair Play,” last week’s #1 and a $20 million Sundance acquisition for the streamer, dropped off the list after only eight days.
Both suggest a result that could influence future decisions. For “Reckoning,” the hope was that delaying its initial home release 90 days would extend its theatrical run. That didn’t happen.
In the 30 days up to its PVOD release, it grossed less than $2 million in theaters. This year, only a handful of films have had a 60 days or longer window, most at close to that time.

Michel Franco was told Jessica Chastain would be a "diva" and a "nightmare" on the set of 'Memory'.The 40-year-old actress won an Oscar last year for her leading role in 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye', and filmmaker Franco admitted some people expected her to be difficult on set.During an interview at TIFF, Franco recalled people saying she would "show up and be a nightmare and be a diva".He added: "I told them, you don’t know half of it. She’s the opposite.“She’s going to show up satisfied, happy, and be productive. People are so afraid of actors. I don’t know why."The worst way to approach an actor or any person is with fear, and if you are pointing in the wrong direction then, yes, all your nightmares will come true.”Chastain stars as Sylvia in the new movie about a...

Within the past four years alone, the success rate for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Emmy nominees who have entered their ceremonies with same-year SAG Award wins under their belts has dropped from 100% to 60%. After being followed by Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in 2021, win-lose trendsetter Patricia Arquette might soon be joined by 2023 SAG Award recipient Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), whose Gold Derby Emmy odds are significantly lower than those of her strongest challenger, Ali Wong (“Beef”).
Chastain and Wong represent half of their Emmy lineup’s first-time acting nominee majority, which also includes Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”) and Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”). Rounding out the group, which features no former Emmy champions, are category newcomers Lizzy Caplan (“Fleishman is in Trouble”) and Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”).
In order to determine the likelihood of Chastain perpetuating said unfortunate trend, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Emmy-nominated costume designer Mitchell Travers didn’t have the luxury to simply re-create the real suits and gowns worn by country music legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette for Showtime’s limited series George & Tammy. In fact, the stature of actor Michael Shannon, who has earned an Emmy nom for his performance as Jones, was an immediate obstacle for the designer.
“Michael Shannon is a brilliant actor, but he’s also six feet, four inches [tall],” Travers tells THR, adding that the real-life Jones was seven inches shorter. “Trying to create costumes for a much shorter man was a major part of the transformation for him.”
Speaking with THR at an FYC event for George & Tammy, held Monday at the 71 Studio Bar at Hollywood’s Grandmaster Recorders, Travers recalls the massive volume of period costumes needed for the limited series — not just for Shannon and his Emmy-nominated co-star Jessica Chastain,...

Best Actress in a Limited Series
Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette in Showtime’s George & Tammy.
The first time Chastain went to an awards ceremony — the 2012 Golden Globes, where she was nominated for The Help — Josh Brolin approached her and suggested she play country singer Tammy Wynette in a movie project he was also interested in joining. Over the next decade, that film morphed into a limited series, and Brolin segued from co-star to executive producer — but Brolin’s vision of Chastain as the country music legend was realized in Showtime’s George & Tammy, and now she is nominated for her first Emmy for her portrayal.
“Getting it made felt like the grand feat, but now, to have it be recognized the way that it is, feels like such a privilege,” Chastain told THR shortly after the nominations were announced. “I’m so ecstatic.

Transforming actors into well-known figures such as Tammy Wynette and Princess Diana was a challenge for artisans, who experimented with techniques to come up with hair and makeup that would look authentic to viewers.
Cate Hall spent hours with Elizabeth Debicki while recreating Princess Diana’s sophisticated coiffure from the early 1990s for Season 5 of “The Crown.” Through a series of incremental adjustments to the wig — and plenty of patience from Debicki – Hall got the look she desired.
“You hold one another’s hand as you keep slicing the wig with a razor and inching towards a shape that feels recognizable,” she recalls of her collaboration with Debicki.
Hall admits that in her first attempt at the wig, Debicki looked more like a “lady called Brenda from 1983” than the glamorous royal. But she kept working on it.

“George and Tammy” is just outside Gold Derby’s Best Limited Series top five, but considering Emmy voters find shows about turbulent real-life celebrity marriages nearly as irresistible as “The White Lotus,” we might be underestimating this six-part dramatization of country singers George Jones (Michael Shannon) and Tammy Wynette’s (Jessica Chastain) thirty-year romantic and artistic relationship.
In 2019, FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” scored nominations for Limited Series, Actress (eventual winner Michelle Williams), Actor (Sam Rockwell), Supporting Actress (Margaret Qualley) and its writing and directing. Positive reviews and high placement in the odds that year made the inclusion of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon’s connubial saga all but obvious. Qualley’s nomination, however, came as something of a shock. The actress was down in 18th place but outgunned Emma Thompson (“King Lear”), Sally Field (“Maniac”) and Eliza Scanlen (“Sharp Objects”).

A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.

I never understood why Jurassic Park was the only dinosaur-related franchise to outlive the dino hysteria of the 90s. Don’t get me wrong, Spielberg’s classic is clearly the best movie to come out of that trend, but that doesn’t change the fact that dinosaurs as a concept are in the public domain and should have been featured in countless other films.
Fortunately for fans of all things prehistoric, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s upcoming 65 (March 10th) promises a return to the Jurassic-Park-less thrills of completely original dinosaur movies. And with that in mind, we’ve come up with this list highlighting six of the best non-jp dinosaur thrillers for all your prehistoric media needs!
As usual, this list is purely based on personal opinion, but since this is Bloody Disgusting, we’ll be limiting entries to monster movies and thrillers. That means no Super Mario Bros...

Aptly named for the acidic smell of deteriorating film, Vinegar Syndrome made an auspicious debut in 2013 with its inaugural release, The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. In the decade since, they have unearthed, restored, and distributed hundreds of cult, exploitation, horror, action, and adult films.
Popping in a new Vinegar Syndrome disc is a bit like cinematic Russian roulette. It’s always interesting, but you never know if you’re going to get an obscure masterpiece, a campy B-movie, a so-bad-it’s-good slice of fun, or a dud. The unknown is half the fun, and discovering those diamonds in the rough makes it worthwhile.
In celebration of their anniversary, I’m highlighting 10 hidden gems from Vinegar Syndrome’s first 10 years.
To narrow the choices, I’m ignoring the heavy hitters like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 and The Amityville Horror, box sets like Forgotten Gialli and Home Grown Horrors,...

Jessica Chastain wasn’t going to play anyone’s pawn onscreen.
The Oscar winner transformed into “Stand By Your Man” crooner Tammy Wynette for Showtime series “George & Tammy” opposite Michael Shannon as George Jones. Chastain, who also produces the series through her Freckle Films banner, revealed that she objected to dialogue in the first episode of the series.
During the scene in question, Shannon as George tells Tammy’s soon-to-be-ex-husband Don (Pat Healy) that he is going to sleep with Tammy and hire the husband an escort.
“I read it and I was deeply disturbed,” Chastain told Marie Claire. “[Tammy] was just kind of sitting there. People were creating stuff so she could be caught rather than her making decisions.”
The prostitute subplot was removed, and co-star Shannon agreed that the dialogue needed to be changed.

Exclusive: A year ago, Yellowjackets got an early Season 2 renewal five episodes into its freshman run. The Showtime series delivered on the vote of confidence with seven Emmy nominations and more than 5 million weekly viewers. Now it’s getting an ever earlier Season 3 renewal: More than three months ahead of Yellowjackets’ March 26 Season 2 premiere, the network has picked up a new installment of the show from creators/executive producers/co-showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, exec producer/co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco, eOne and Drew Comins’ studio-based Creative Engine.
There was a practical rationale behind the timing of the renewals, which come exactly a year apart. I hear they were tied to the yearly deadline for picking up the cast’s options, which are up in mid-December.
But it also makes a statement about Showtime’s programming strategy as the first renewal after the network moved...

While Squanch Games’ new Fps High on Life isn’t what you’d call horror, there’s indeed some horror content in the game. Taking a page from Starbreeze Studios’ The Darkness, you can watch a full length horror film if you need a break from the gameplay.
The Nerd Stash reports that you can actually watch four full-length horror movies in High on Life. They aren’t your slapped-together cheapo films made exclusively for the game, either. You’ve got 1987’s Blood Harvest starring Tiny Tim, Charles Philip Moore‘s 1990 film Demon Wind, 1994’s Tammy and The T-Rex (it’s not known if it’s the R-rated cut that Vinegar Syndrome put out a few years ago), and 1978’s Vampire Hookers starring John Carradine.
If you need a break from killing everything with your talking gun and knife, you literally just head to your living room in your house and watch the TV.

Despite what you may read in the New York Times today, I nor anyone at Deadline ever wrote a review declaring that Showtime’s George & Tammy had an “intense storyline.”
However, in a production mix-up, that is what you will see on page 24 of the today’s Arts & Leisure section in the Grey Lady. In fact, the full-page ad for the Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain starring limited series on the Paramount-owned cabler is full of over-the-top fake quotes from various top tier outlets.
A reality acknowledged by the Times on page 8 of the Sunday Edition’s A-section where it says: “Due to an error, the version of the George & Tammy ad printed in the Dec 11 issue of the Arts & Leisure section ran with incorrect quotes. The below ad is correct.”
That error was actually the result of a communications breakdown of sorts, I have discovered. In a...

A pair of golden performances elevates the standard entertainment biopic in “George & Tammy,” a six-part limited series airing on Showtime.
The story behind George & Tammy plays out like a real-life “Star Is Born:” king of his respective entertainment genre takes a young upstart under his wing and falls in love with her – but his substance abuse issues only get worse when her star starts to eclipse his. Of course, the real-life romance of king of country music George Jones (played by Michael Shannon) and his queen Tammy Wynette (played by Jessica Chastain) takes some extensive detours. But at this point in the music biopic era, we’ve already seen a multitude of missed gigs, dressing room arguments, and bottles hurled against a wall, preferably smashing a mirror (although Jones driving drunk on a riding mower is the stuff of alcoholic legend).
Fortunately for “George & Tammy,” its two...

Plot: The six-part limited series George & Tammy chronicles the country music power couple, Tammy Wynette and George Jones, whose complicated-but-enduring relationship inspired some of the most iconic music of all time.
Review: In the annals of country music, there are few names that are as iconic as George Jones and Tammy Wynette. While Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn get the big screen treatment in Oscar-worthy biopics, the surge in limited series programming across streaming platforms has provided a new medium to tell complex stories about artists whose lives cannot be condensed into a two-hour movie. George & Tammy benefits and is shackled to the mini-series format in a well-made series with top-notch leading performances from Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain as two of the most famous and tragic musicians in the history of country music. The TV landscape is losing another source of original content: Spectrum Originals, which produced series like L.A.’s Finest and the Mad About You revival for Spectrum cable subscribers, is shutting down, according to our sister site Deadline, with parent company Charter Communications scrapping all of its original programming plans.
The move leaves several current Spectrum series in limbo, including neo-Western Joe Pickett, which is billed as Spectrum’s top-rated series ever and was renewed for Season 2 in February, and sci-fi thriller Beacon 23, starring Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey, which has already been renewed ahead of its series premiere.

"I can feel you flowing through!!" Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a new comedy series titled God's Favorite Idiot, the latest creation from the husband-wife comedy duo Melissa McCarthy & Ben Falcone. Usually Falcone directs McCarthy in Hollywood comedies but this time he stars as the main character in this workplace comedy about what would happen if he suddenly started glowing after being struck by lightning. In God's Favorite Idiot, Mid level Tech support employee Clark Thompson finds love with co-worker Amily Luck at exactly the same time he becomes the unwitting messenger of God. There's also roller skating, a lake of fire and an apocalypse, too. This looks like they went all out with the religious imagery. Falcone stars with McCarthy, and an ensemble cast including Leslie Bibb as Satan, Kevin Dunn, Usman Ally, Steve Mallory, Chris Sandiford, Ana Scotney, and Yanic Truesdale. This seems extra quirky...

Heaven, hell, and office romances: real-life couple and comedy duo Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone lead Netflix comedy “God’s Favorite Idiot,” premiering on the streamer June 15.
McCarthy and Falcone co-founded On the Day Productions, and have written and produced films like “Tammy,” “The Boss” and “Life of the Party” together with Falcone directing. Now, the creative partners lead “God’s Favorite Idiot,” which is part “Bruce Almighty” and part workplace comedy.
Falcone stars as unassuming tech support employee Clark Thompson who pines after his co-worker Amily Luck (McCarthy). After being struck by lightning, Clark begins to glow — and not just because his crush is reciprocated. Turns out, Clark is now anointed, and must battle Satan (Leslie Bibb) with the help of Amily.
The eight-episode series also stars Kevin Dunn, Usman Ally, Steve Mallory, Chris Sandiford, Ana Scotney, and Yanic Truesdale. “God’s Favorite Idiot” is Oscar nominee McCarthy’s follow-up TV role...
