Chris and Roberta Hanley will produce the adaptation for the company, with Kazemi co-writing alongside Brittany Menjivar.
Set during the Y2K era, New Millennium Boyz follows suburban teen Brad Sela, whose life unravels after he falls in with two volatile new friends. As they document their increasingly transgressive exploits on Handycams, Brad is pulled deeper into chaos on the brink of the new millennium.
The book was published by Permuted Press in the fall of 2023.
Muse Films seems a natural fit to produce New Millennium Boyz, given its edgy, provocative, and visually distinctive earlier work on films like American Psycho, as well as Spring Breakers and Bully, other portraits of youth on the edge

Editor’s note: this list was originally posted January 2025. It will be periodically updated to reflect new release date announcements.
It’s rare for a studio to become a brand, but A24 has managed it. Since its humble beginnings as a New York-based distribution company founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in August 2012, A24 has become synonymous with quality for film lovers, the place that releases the must-see indies everyone is talking about.
A24’s first film was the little-seen and little-loved “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” from Roman Coppola, which hit theaters in February 2013 to muted fanfare. But the movie that really put the company on the map was “Spring Breakers,” Harmony Korine’s wild crime comedy that released in March that same year and established many of the conventions associated with the brand: Artful neon cinematography, shocking content and stylized violence,...

With director Mary Harron’s American Psycho recently celebrating its 25th anniversary, the team behind the cult-favorite film tells The Hollywood Reporter their initial impressions of Luca Guadagnino’s plan to take a stab at a new feature.
Hitting theaters from Lionsgate on April 14, 2000, American Psycho stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a banker with murderous fantasies, in the adaptation of author Bret Easton Ellis’ best-selling novel satirizing 1980s yuppie culture. Lionsgate has recently announced that Guadagnino is attached to helm a new take on the book with a script from Scott Z. Burns, and the director himself appeared via video at CinemaCon earlier this month to tease the project.
“On one hand, I am always sad about remakes,” says actor Matt Ross, who plays a co-worker of Bateman’s in the 2000 feature and also works as a filmmaker. “I personally have been offered them in the past as a director,...

Harmony Korine is hard to pin down: Stylistically, ideologically, and even rhetorically. While leading a Q&a with him before a mostly teenage and 20-something crowd at the Ringling College of Art and Design at the Sarasota Film Festival on April 12, that quickly became apparent.
Like he was once again appearing on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” as he did frequently in the 1990s, Korine gave some amusing answers — maybe non-answers.
What inspired his latest film, “Baby Invasion“? “I’d seen this Phil Collins video, and I just remember watching it, and I had been drinking Mountain Dew and eating Skittles, and I was playing a lot of Tetris, and the movie just came to me.”
What made him fall in love with Florida, where he’s made his recent movies and has headquartered his company Edglrd? “Strip malls. I was investing in this company that just builds strip malls,...

Harmony Korine’s multimedia design collective Edglrd has inked a first-look development deal with AI giant Runway. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The two companies plan to develop new projects, using Runway’s generative AI tools. Edglrd previously worked with Runway on campaigns for Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga.
“At Edglrd, we’re always experimenting with new technology and tools as we look for new ways to create images and tell stories,” Korine said in a statement on Runway’s blog. “This partnership is about exploring what’s possible.” Korine used Runway’s AI tools for his experimental project “Baby Invasion,” which he debuted last year at the Venice Film Festival.
In a statement, head of Runway Studios Jamie Umpherson said: “Partnering with Harmony is a perfect fit – as someone who has made a career out of pushing the boundaries of traditional production and story structures, his expertise is...

Korine’s studio Edglrd is making a first-look deal with Runway, the New York-based film-focused machine-intelligence firm, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The pact will allow Edglrd to deploy the company’s generative AI tools in new ways across all of its creative products, including traditional films, immersive pieces and brand videos.
“This open up all kinds of creative output — visual styles and identities that haven’t been explored before,” Alon Soran, chief commercial officer at Edglrd, told THR.
The companies have previously worked together in a less formal way. Runway helped provide the AI baby faces in last year’s Venice Film Festival premiere Baby Invasion, a hybrid movie-videogame centered on a...

Spring Break Forever, indeed.
Multi-hyphenate filmmaker Harmony Korine will receive the Trailblazer Award at the 2025 Sarasota Film Festival. This marks the first time he’s appeared at the festival, or any Florida film festival on the Gulf Coast near where he filmed “Spring Breakers” in 2012. Korine shot that now-iconic movie, which all but launched A24 as a powerhouse indie distributor, in St. Petersburg, about 45 minutes north of Sarasota.
In addition to receiving the award, Korine will screen his new film “Baby Invasion” on Saturday April 12, followed by a Q&a with this writer.
In a statement, the Sarasota Film Festival said Korine is receiving the Trailblazer Award “in recognition of his bold, innovative, and genre-defying contributions to the world of cinema, which have continually pushed the boundaries of storytelling, art, and expression. … Korine has proven himself to be an artist unafraid to defy convention and challenge the norms of filmmaking.

When we say “cinema is dead”, we don’t quite mean what Harmony Korine has in mind. Literally. The Gummo, Spring Breakers and Baby Invasion director would like to see a world where movies literally put directly into the minds’ of viewers. Wait, are they even viewers at that point?
Sitting down with Interview, Harmony Korine wondered, “How can you be inside of a film? You know what I mean? At some point, I would love to be able to transport the movies into your mind directly. You could just drink something or stare at something, and then you just transport a full emotion, a full ride or a character, into your imagination with no screen.”
Harmony Korine is far from being short on unique ideas, using the film medium to innovate in ways that may ultimately distant most viewers but may show worth with certain audiences. Take, for instance,...

At a New York Imax screening of “Spring Breakers,” Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco crashed the party, saying hello to hundreds of fans who showed up to watch A24’s bikini-clad drug bonanza on the nation’s second-largest screen.
Moviegoers shrieked as Gomez and Blanco made their surprise appearance, and one was heard saying, “Oh my God. I need to call everybody I know.”
“Hi guys,” Gomez said to the audience. “Did you guys enjoy one of my favorite movies ever?”
Gomez then pulled out her phone to take a selfie with the crowd at AMC Lincoln Square, promising to send it to “Spring Breakers” director “Harmony [Korine] and the girls,” referring to co-stars Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine.
During the short visit, Gomez and Blanco previewed a clubby track, “Bluest Flame,” off their upcoming album “I Said I Love You First,” and sent everyone home with a Usb drive containing the yet-to-be-released song.

Filmmaker Harmony Korine (“Spring Breakers”) has been well-established as leaning toward material that is specifically designed to shock and disturb audiences going back to films such as “Kids” (a cautionary tale set in NYC he wrote for Larry Clark) alongside subsequent directorial efforts “Gummo” and “Trash Humpers.” Korine’s latest pic, “Baby Invasion,” is set to combine the world of violent first-person shooter video games with the unnerving assistance of artificial intelligence to make the film.

The Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight sidebar competition has revealed the poster for its upcoming 2025 edition, featuring a painting by one of cinema’s boundary-obliterating cult heroes.
From “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine, the painting features two blurry faces in red and yellow, which Korine introduced as “Twitchys”
“The characters in the painting are called Twitchys,” he said in a quote on the competition’s social media pages. “They are always lurking and playing. They are very happy to be at Cannes.”
According to the Directors’ Fortnight, Korine’s “poetry and crazy energy set the tone for the 57th edition!”

While Gummo, Trash Humpers, and Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine has always pushed the edge of cinema, his latest Edglrd projects certainly bring him into a new echelon. Following his infrared crime thriller/nightmare Aggro DR1FT, he’s back with Baby Invasion, which sports a brand new score from Burial. Following its Venice premiere last fall and ahead of its unique NYC event this Friday, the first trailer has now arrived.
This Friday’s event will take place at Queens’ Knockdown Center and will feature Korine deconstructing and mixing the feature film like a DJ set, transforming Baby Invasion into a pulsating, hypnotic experience. The event, which one can get tickets for here, will also feature live DJ sets by Harmony Korine/Edglrd, Doss, Eyedress, and Yves Tumor.
Here’s the synopsis: “An ultra-realistic, multiplayer Fps game follows a group of mercenaries using baby faces as avatars through the use of AI.

McGwyer and Mortimer haven't played together in about a decade. McGwyer's moved on, he's got a solo career, but there's a request for the older material as part of an intimate gig at Wallis Island. How far the organiser is prepared to go to recapture the old days is part of the film's bittersweet charm. The consequences of that are the source of its comedy.
As it screened as the Glasgow Film Festival's 'Surprise Film', I heard the couple behind me say that The Ballad Of Wallis Island wasn't the kind of film they'd normally go to see. That's one of the joys of the Surprise Film, which has given audiences fare like War Pony, Spring Breakers, Calvary and more. Not many independent studios have left as big a mark on modern cinema as A24. Founded in 2012, the company started as a small distribution house but quickly built a reputation for bold, thought-provoking films that pushed the boundaries of storytelling. Early successes like Spring Breakers and The Witch set the tone for A24’s unique blend of arthouse aesthetics and broad appeal. A24 succeeded in drawing in a loyal audience hungry for films that defied traditional Hollywood conventions by giving platforms to daring filmmakers like Robert Eggers, Halina Reijn and Ti West. Just last year, they produced and distributed stellar movies like The Brutalist, I Saw the TV Glow and Sing Sing.

A24’s latest high concept horror film has the grandiose title of Opus, and the trailer has landed. Take a look here.
Film studio A24 has proved itself to be a frontrunner in bold, original, risk taking storytelling, usually with small budgets and tidy profits. From distributing daring titles like Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, Alex Garland’s directorial debut Ex Machina and Robert Eggers’ The Witch, it soon moved into producing. Examples? The Safdie Brothers’ anxiety inducing Uncut Gems, Ari Aster’s Hereditary and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Oscar winning Everything Everywhere All At Once. A24 has become quite the stamp.
Its next release is the thriller Opus. And the synopsis for it reads as follows…
A young writer is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she...

Babygirl is climbing a major chart as it nears one full month in theaters. The A24 movie, which was written and directed by Halina Reijn, stars Nicole Kidman as Romy Mathis, a CEO who begins an illicit affair with her intern Samuel (Harris Dickinson) which allows her to explore her repressed sexual desires. The Babygirl release kicked off on Christmas Day and, while it was the third highest-grossing new release of the day behind Nosferatu and A Complete Unknown, it has quickly earned back its $20 million budget in theaters.
Per The Numbers, Babygirl has reached a worldwide gross of $29.3 million as of Friday, January 17. This sees it climbing the chart of the highest-grossing A24 movies of all time, surpassing 2017's The Disaster Artist ($28.72 million) to become the nineteenth best-performing release by the independent studio and distributor. However, it is still quite far from the grosses of the movies at the top of the chart,...

Netflix is currently streaming one of A24's most popular horror movies, so now is as good a time as any to look back on the incredible box office accomplishment the film reached before the release of 2022's Everything Everywhere All at Once. These days, A24 is a beloved production company that has specialized in the horrific, the strange, and the awesomely beautiful. From movies like Lady Bird to the X franchise, A24 puts out movies that may not be for everyone, but have a definable and respectable style. Yet, A24 wasn't always the big name it is today.
A24 first originated in 2013, with a comedy film called A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swann III. The movie was a massive flop, earning only negative reviews from critics who accused the film of having no substance whatsoever. Fortunately though, A24 quickly revived its reputation just a few months later with its film,...

Selena Gomez's chances at earning her first acting nomination at the Oscars could now be ruined. Although she is perhaps best known as a pop star and businesswoman, Gomez has also been an actor since she was a child. After being cast on Barney & Friends in the early 2000s, she went on to play roles in a variety of prominent film and television projects, including Wizards of Waverly Place, Only Murders in the Building, Hotel Transylvania, and Spring Breakers.
However, she delivered one of her best performances yet after joining the Emilia Pérez cast. The 2024 Jacques Audiard musical, which also stars Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón, sees Gomez playing the wife of a Mexican cartel leader. In addition to allowing her to showcase her musical chops in performances of songs such as the Oscar-shortlisted "Mi Camino," the movie has allowed her to be considered an Oscar frontrunner...

After Hollywood had seemingly had James Franco cast out due to disturbing allegations against him, many fans wondered what happened to the prolific actor. Franco, once a prominent figure in Hollywood, has graced the screen with a variety of dynamic performances, from the Spider-Man trilogy to the critically acclaimed 127 Hours, for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. His career was marked by a blend of commercial and indie films, showcasing his versatility across genres. His collaborations with Seth Rogen, such as in Pineapple Express and Disaster Artist, further cemented his place in the industry.
Franco's talent was undeniable, and his knack for choosing diverse and challenging roles made him a significant player in the film industry. However, in recent years, Franco's presence in Hollywood has noticeably diminished. After a flurry of successful films, Franco's career seems to have hit a standstill, with fewer roles and a...

Joe Francis built a multimillion-dollar empire based around Spring Breakers exposing themselves on camera. His “sex sells” business model created a swarm of controversy, debate, and legal backlash. Peacock’s original docuseries Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story digs into the cultural impact of the franchise and its creator. This was done through the lens of former employees, past women who felt exploited on VHS tapes and DVDs, journalists, and those who worked to take Francis’ operation down including former Panama City Beach Mayor Lee Sulivan. Author and journalist Scaachi Koul interviewed Francis at length. Recorded audio from their explosive conversations is threaded throughout the three episodes. The BuzzFeed News reporter sat down with the debaucherous kingpin in 2022 for nine hours at his 45,000-square foot beachfront property in Punta Mita, Mexico for an in-depth article that ran in March 2023. Selena Gomez, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience of 500 students at Chapman University, has been an actress since she was 7 and a star since the age of 14, when she first played the lead on the Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place and embarked on a pop music career that took her to the top of the charts. It all made Gomez one of the most famous people in the world. But as she entered adulthood, she was “craving” the opportunity to show that she had serious acting chops and to be part of high-quality projects that would call on her to use them. For a number of years, that dream seemed elusive. But in 2024, it came true.

Ask Selena Gomez what she gets out of acting that music has not historically afforded her, and she replies in no uncertain terms: “Sanity.”
It’s an exceedingly honest answer, which is what you come to expect after spending any amount of time in Gomez’s company. The Only Murders in the Building producer and star has no patience for anything less than the unvarnished truth, messy as it often is. “She’s herself, always, and I think that’s part of why her fans love her so much,” says her Wizards of Waverly Place co-star David Henrie, who has routinely watched her open up on personal subjects, including her battle with lupus, struggles with depression and diagnosis of bipolar disorder. “They go, ‘Oh, I see myself in that.’ “
But for the foreseeable future, Gomez would rather get lost in someone else’s story, something that music has never allowed her to do.

Harmony Korine's filmography has been characterized by themes of found family, social alienation, and dysfunctional relationships. All three can be found in his 2007 film Mister Lonely, which follows a Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna) who finds an antidote to his loneliness in a Scottish commune made up of fellow celebrity impersonators. The film is much less abrasive than some of Korine's most (in)famous films. It isn't the postmodern indictment of youthful hedonism that is Spring Breakers, nor is it as intentionally repulsive as Gummo or Trash Humpers. Instead, it focuses on what it's like to want to be someone else and not being comfortable in your own skin. The film also has a thread of exploring fate, as well as the ramifications of cults and of social conditioning. Many of the characters in Mister Lonely lack substantial development, but it's clear that this is intentional, as they are...

On what she wishes she knew before getting into show business:
“I have no regrets and I have a fantastic family and there were rules laid down by my parents and I’m appreciative of that. However, I don’t think I would’ve done it very young if I was thinking of myself now. There were a lot of things that I felt stunted by. Then adding a lot of pressure from a lot of people didn’t help me develop a sense of self in my twenties. It was a very difficult time.
