Speaking at Canneseries, Bad Wolf founder Jane Tranter — whose credits include hits from “Doctor Who” to “Succession” — recalled how her creative collaboration turned friendship with late “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini changed her career. Tranter met the actor while working on their passion project “The Night Of,” which Gandolfini was supposed to star on before his untimely death in 2013. The series pilot would become the last thing the actor ever filmed, with his role later taken over by John Turturro.
“He was very uncomfortable and discombobulated by L.A., so we were uncomfortable and discombobulated together,” remembered the executive, who formed a friendship with Gandolfini while leading BBC Worldwide Productions and Adjacent Productions in Los Angeles. Internationally celebrated Icelandic actors Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Hera Hilmar are set to star in “Reykjavik Fusion,” an Iceland-set crime thriller series that is rapidly racking up pre-sales in multiple territories.
The series’ deals underscore an increasingly attractive financing model, at least for selectively produced foreign-language shows, based on tying down partners and pre-sales among local broadcasters in Europe rather than waiting for a U.S. deal with a streamer for the U.S.
“It’s a dynamic ecosystem in Europe right now, full of potential partners,” said Erik Barmack, whose Wild Sheep Content co-produces and handles the international distribution of “Reykjavik Fusion.”
A familiar hirsute face and huge body for international audiences, Ólafur Darri is known for “The Tourist,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “True Detective.” He has also played the lead in Icelandic export hits “Trapped” and “The Minister.”

The renaissance of “Doctor Who,” which started its latest season this week, is a 20-year journey that is entwined with the establishment of a thriving TV production scene in South Wales, where it shoots, and the meteoritic rise of the production company Bad Wolf.
This dates back to 2003 when writer Russell T Davies was asked by the BBC’s then head of drama, Jane Tranter, to revive the show and to base the production in South Wales, an area hitherto known for coal mining and heavy industry. It was produced in 2004, overseen by BBC Wales head of drama, Julie Gardner.
When Tranter and Gardner relocated to Los Angeles to lead BBC Worldwide Productions and Adjacent Productions, they produced “Da Vinci’s Demons” for Starz, and again located the production in South Wales.

Mortal Engines is a fun action-packed sci-fi flick with a cool steampunk world and intriguing characters. Despite box office flop, the film offers an entertaining post-apocalyptic adventure with unique cities on wheels. The cast of international veterans and Hollywood newcomers deliver standout performances in this visually stunning movie.
Mortal Engines, while flopping in theaters when it was released in 2018, is nonetheless an enjoyable action sci-fi-fantasy romp thanks to its great cast of characters. Based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Philip Reeve, the 2018 movie adaptation of Mortal Engines was directed by Christian Rivers after Peter Jackson purchased the rights to the book. Unfortunately, Mortal Engines bombed at the box office, which is a shame as the interesting story and world had promise.
Mortal Engines takes place in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world where giant, moving cities known as "Traction Cities" roam the land and consume smaller traction cities and settlements as predators.

How challenging is it in this day and age to stand out in a crowded, chaotic marketplace of content and distraction, and is the worst fate for a series to be met with indifference? Despite all the progress we’ve seen over the years, what more can the industry do for black, indigenous, LGBTQ and other minority communities when it comes to diversity and inclusion on our TV screens? These were some of the topics discussed by five top TV showrunners and directors when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2023 /2024 awards contenders: Nkechi Okoro Carroll (“Found”), Peter Hoar (“The Last of Us”), Mimi Leder (“The Morning Show”), John Hoffman (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Sterlin Harjo (“Reservation Dogs”).

Tyler-James stays busy – so busy, it seems like the saying “Another week, another Tyler-James project” might soon be accurate. We’ve heard about multiple Tyler-James movies recently, as the filmmaker has produced the films that turn the popular nursery rhymes Mary Had a Little Lamb and Three Blind Mice into horror stories, and directed both The Loch Ness Horror and Monsternado. Also directed by Tyler-James is the upcoming ITN Distribution release Sky Monster, and a trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above. We don’t yet know exactly when Sky Monster is going to be released, but take a look at the trailer and find out if this looks like something you’d want to watch.

Universal Pictures went all out in bringing The Last Voyage of the Demeter to life, with meticulous attention to detail in both the makeup and the production design. The production designer, Edward Thomas, decided to build the exterior ship in a tank in Malta, while interior sets were built on moving platforms in Berlin. Safety was a top priority in creating the massive 100-ton ship. Thomas ensured that the ship's design looked authentic and real, using traditional methods and working with nautical engineers and maritime experts. The goal was to make sure the ship didn't let the movie down and that it matched the high quality of the acting, costumes, makeup, and special effects.

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.

Wales has long been regarded as a place of myth and magic – its national emblem is the dragon, after all, and it has strong links with the legend of King Arthur. So, it is fitting that Lucasfilm should have chosen it as the location for the Disney+ fantasy series “Willow.” The production was based at Dragon Studios in Bridgend, South Wales, and filmed at 32 locations across the country.
The Celtic nation has provided the locations for many iconic movie scenes over the decades, including the Bat Cave in “The Dark Knight Rises,” The Slaughtered Lamb pub in “American Werewolf in London,” and the castle in the opening scene of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”
Wales also hosted part of the shoot for Ron Howard’s original 1988 “Willow” movie, based on a story by George Lucas, and starring Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley and Warwick Davis. The latter two actors reprise...

Owen Hendricks, Noah Centineo’s character in The Recruit, is thrown into the deep end in his first days as a lawyer for the CIA, as a new clip from the action-paced Netflix series reveals. The 40-second clip — which Centineo screened at the Ccxp convention in São Paulo, Brazil on Saturday, December 3 — shows Owen going head to head with a former CIA asset named Max Meladze, played by Laura Haddock (Da Vinci’s Demons). “You know that making threats against the agency is a crime, right?” he says, visiting Max in prison. But Max says she knows “many things.” She knows, for example, that he’s wet behind the ears as a CIA lawyer. She also knows that he’s lying when he claims he injured his hand by closing it in a car door. “I’ve pulled out enough fingernails to know what it looks like afterwards,” she says. “You seem really proud of that,...

Jane Tranter’s Bad Wolf has set up its first major drama since joining Sony Pictures Television, Variety can reveal.
The company is adapting the first book in Bernard Cornwell’s “Warlord Chronicles” trilogy, “The Winter King,” into a 10-part series. The show — which is expected to be a returner that will go on to cover the other books in the series — will shoot in Wales and the West Country in 2022.
“The Winter King” is being positioned as a revisionist take on the Arthurian legends, which were first published in the mid-1990s. It follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast son to legendary warrior and leader.
The books are set in the 5th century, long before Britain was united, in a land of warring factions and tribes when the world was brutal and lives were often fleeting.
Bad Wolf is producing in association with One Big Picture, director Otto Bathurst’s production company,...
