It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

What if a film has a story whose tropes are very well known and its execution initially gives you hope that it will go somewhere in a totally new direction but ultimately doesn’t? The new film Mob Land, written and directed by Nicholas Maggio, suffers from its own genre conventions. The setting, the atmosphere, the thick accents, and the needle drops—all of them are unable to make the film fly. On the contrary, they, after a point, start to strangle the little life this film seems to have.
There is nothing that is out and out ‘bad’ about Mob Land, and yet one starts to beg the question, Why make this particular film now? The answer to that question is what should have illuminated each and every frame of the film, but Mob Land feels tired and dull right from its first frame. There is a kind of...

The new movie Mob Land, directed by Nicholas Maggio, is a crime drama that boasts of being a gritty piece of cinema but is actually a long-drawn cliche, with only a few moments that actually feel alive. Crime dramas are usually an engaging affair, but Mob Land proves that if a certain style or a stereotypical mood is given priority against the flow of the story, it will seldom work. The story revolves around Shelby Conners, who, after losing his job, agrees to his brother-in-law’s plan to rob a clinic dealing in drug money. The heist goes bad, and a hitman gets on their tail.
The characters in Mob Land are part of a philosophical debate about whether life in a small town is more meaningful or if the roller coaster ride of the big cities is the pathway to a purposeful life. The answers are given to us after a long,...

The “Barbenheimer” juggernaut continued rolling on at the U.K. and Ireland box office, occupying the top two slots for the fifth consecutive weekend.
Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” took pole position yet again with £2.6 million ($3.4 million), per numbers released by Comscore. With £84.7 million, “Barbie” is the highest grossing film of the year in the territory above “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (£54.5 million) and has sped past “Titanic,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Top Gun: Maverick” to occupy eighth position on the all time charts. If its momentum continues, “Avengers: Endgame” is within striking distance.
Universal’s “Oppenheimer” remained in second place with £2.04 million for a total of £50.05 million, making it the third highest grosser of the year in the territory.
Warner Bros.’ superhero film “Blue Beetle” buzzed into the charts, debuting in third position with £1.1 million and in its third weekend, the studio’s “Meg 2: The Trench” remained steady...

One thing is clear after watching “Mob Land”: Kevin Dillon will not be the man to end America’s opioid crisis. In fact, it’s possible that the prescription drug epidemic currently gutting this country will not end at the hands of any single “Entourage” cast member.
The man formerly known as Johnny Drama stars in the film as Trey, a reckless drifter whose lime green Japanese sports car raises plenty of eyebrows in his small Maga town. But despite his life of petty crime and general inability to get his act together, Trey has a few thoughts about the opioids that have begun circulating through his town at an alarming rate.
He sees his friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet while the local strip mall pill mill rakes in six figures by feeding their addictions. Through some combination of altruism and greed, he convinces himself that...

Festivals past are populating a busy specialty market this weekend with films from Sundance and Venice. Sony Pictures Classics is giving Randall Park’s Shortcomings a substantial 400+ screen release. See Deadline review. Mubi is out with Passages in New York and LA – both premiered to critical acclaim in Park City.
There’s been some drama around the latter after the MPA gave the Ira Sachs film an Nc-17 rating, which Mubi “officially rejected.” The distributor/streamer/producer said it “remains committed to releasing Passages nationwide in its original version as the filmmaker intended, with our full backing, unrated and uncut.” Rates a 94% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadline review here.
Casey Affleck and Noah Jupe-starring Dreamin’ Wild from Roadside Attractions on 400 screens follows the life of singer-musician brothers Donnie and Joe Emerson. Deadline review. Magnolia’s A Compassionate Spy, coming in the wake of blockbuster Oppenheimer, is an espionage...

Writer-director Nicholas Maggio may not have intended to be self-critical when, fairly early in his debut feature “Mob Land,” he has one character observe to another about their failing small Southern town, “This whole place has become a fucking cliché.” But the longer this slackly paced rural noir continues, the more that dialogue seems in retrospect like fair warning. Borrowing freely from “No Country for Old Men,” “Collateral” and maybe a dozen or so other superior films, Maggio has cobbled together a modestly diverting, effectively atmospheric but blatantly derivative crime drama sprinkled with a few joltingly nasty plot twists.
It helps a lot that the first-time feature filmmaker has cast just about every role with an actor fully committed to their part. Better still, some of the briefly glimpsed supporting players do their bit to ratchet up the suspense by conveying sweaty desperation, darkly comical fury, or both.
At one point,...

Nicholas Maggio’s feature directorial debut, Mob Land, is a crime thriller in which two men rashly decide to pull off a robbery, frantically blunder their way through the job, and then face the devastating consequences of their actions. Sadly, the film itself is made with the same sort of overexcited energy, and the end result is similarly messy.
Shelby (Shiloh Fernandez) is a simple family man trying to make an honest living in a dying Dixie town. Here, drug overdoses are so common that the locals share the news of someone’s death like they would the results of a bad football game: worthy of quick commiseration but not interrupting your day over. When Shelby finds himself in dire financial straits, his brother-in-law, Trey (Kevin Dillon), suggests that they turn their town’s curse into a blessing by robbing a nearby pill mill. Shelby reluctantly agrees and, after the plan quickly goes awry,...

"This ain't your world... you don't control this." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for Mob Land, an action thriller crime film from filmmaker Nicholas Maggio. They're sending this one to theaters in August if anyone is interested in watching. "Some debts can't be repaid with money." A young father gets in over his head after a robbery goes wrong. The Tulsa King meets Hell or Highwater in this gritty and tense southern thriller starring Hollywood icon, John Travolta, as the Sheriff looking to stop things before it gets worse. Starring Shiloh Fernandez, Stephen Dorff, Ashley Benson, Emily Tremaine, Timothy V. Murphy, with Kevin Dillon and John Travolta as Sheriff Bodie Davis.
