In Hollywood, January is generally considered a "dump month" where studios dump movies that they lack confidence in. Scattered box office hits like "American Sniper," "Bad Boys for Life," and last year's "M3GAN" have defied those expectations (mainly by taking advantage of the lack of competition), but this week's biggest release fits the "dump month" box to a tee. Sci-fi thriller "I.S.S." -- which stars Ariana Debose ("West Side Story") and was directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite ("Blackfish") -- grossed just $1.2 million from 2,520 theaters on its opening day (including Thursday previews), and is projected to gross just $3.3 million in its opening weekend, per Variety.
This won't come as a surprise if, like me, you've seen almost no marketing for this movie. "I.S.S." was distributed by Bleecker Street, which also released Meg Ryan's "What Happens Later" and Catherine Hardwicke's "Mafia Mamma" in 2023. Both of those movies scored smaller opening weekends...

To celebrate the release of What Happens Later, the new rom-com opening in UK cinemas this week, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the film’s star and director to find out more.
Snowed-in at a regional airport overnight, ex-lovers Willa (Meg Ryan) and Bill (David Duchovny) realize they’re still attracted to each other — but also still equally annoyed with each other. As they unpack the riddle of their mutual past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they begin to wonder if their reunion is a mere coincidence or something more enchanted.
Chatting to Ryan, who is making her sophomore directorial effort, and Duchovny, we talk rom-coms, the lure of the film and the unique challenges of performing a “two-hander”, the advantages and disadvantages of working for a director who is also an actor, as well as a chat about two of their older works,...

Meg Ryan doesn’t want to hear anyone calling her son, actor Jack Quaid, a “nepo baby.” In a recent interview with Glamour magazine following the release of her latest directorial and acting effort “What Happens Later,” Ryan said it’s “dismissive” to say that Jack’s career exists only because of his connection to her and his father, Dennis Quaid. Jack is a rising star in Hollywood with roles on Prime Video’s “The Boys,” “Scream” and more.
“Jack is really talented,” Ryan said. “He’s more of a natural than I’ll ever be. That nepo stuff is so dismissive of his work ethic, his gifts and how sensitive he is to the idea of his privilege.”
Jack told People magazine earlier this year that growing up with two hugely successful Hollywood stars as his parents “didn’t really feel different” because he “grew up with friends who...

For the second weekend in a row, Universal and Blumhouse's video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's" remained atop the box office charts. Granted, this past weekend didn't bring much by way of significant competition, with Meg Ryan's low-budget rom-com "What Happens Later" and A24's Priscilla Presley biopic "Priscilla" entering the fold. On paper, topping the charts for two weekends looks great, but "Five Nights at Freddy's" did take a nosedive in its second frame, dropping a whopping 76%. Why the big tumble? It appears Peacock is to blame.
The adaptation from director Emma Tammi took in an estimated $19.4 million on its second weekend in theaters. That's a steep decline compared to the $80 million opening the horror flick posted over Halloween weekend. Now, let's be clear before we get into the weeds here: nobody is crying for Universal or Blumhouse. The film carries a budget in the $20-25 million...

After a terrific October, things settled down for the first weekend of November, as few major studios wanted to open the holiday movie season, and no new movies opened in more than 1,500 theaters. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Some might remember that this weekend was when Warner Bros had planned to release “Dune Part II” until the decision was made a few months back to move it to 2024. So far, that move hasn’t benefitted anyone much, at least not in terms of box office.
After setting a number of records last weekend, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” took a massive plunge in its second weekend, probably not helped by the fact that it was already streaming on Peacock. Still, it was able to remain #1 with an estimated $19.4 million, down 76% from its opening weekend, to bring its North American total to $113.6 million. The PG-13 horror movie added another...

Radical with Eugenio Derbez built on its smash opening in Mexico to hit no. 5 at the U.S. box office with a super $2.7 million at 416 theaters. The Pantelion/Participant release had delayed its debut Stateside by two weeks to skirt The Eras Tour juggernaut, allowing word of mouth to build for the drama about a dedicated teacher in a troubled Mexican border town.
Priscilla by Sofia Coppola is looking at an estimated $5 million weekend and a no. 4 box office slot in a major week-two expansion to 1,359 screens. The film with Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley and Jacob Elordi as Elvis now has an estimated cume of $5.3 million in one of the year’s best expansions and Sofia Coppola’s second best of her career. Thirty years ago, Meg Ryan and David Duchovny were at the height of their popularity. Ryan starred opposite Tom Hanks in one of the definitive romantic comedies, Sleepless in Seattle, and Duchovny was headlining, along with Gillian Anderson, what would become one of the most popular series of the 1990s, The X-Files. While Duchovny has starred in other series like Californication and Aquarius, and a few films since, you have to go back to 2015 for Ryan’s last screen credit, her directorial debut Ithaca. The two are back together in Ryan’s second try at directing, What Happens Later, a film that falls flat early on and doesn’t get much better after that…...

On a weekend when “Five Weeks at Freddy’s” (Universal) dropped 76 percent and overall grosses were $65 million on a traditionally prime release date, it could have been worse. With limited studio alternatives, there were some good holds among longer-run films, and solid expansions for “Priscilla” (A24) and “The Holdovers” (Focus). “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) showed particular strength with a 13 percent drop in its fourth weekend.
“Freddy’s” added $19.4 million after its unexpectedly massive opening. It’s also a massive fall — one of the biggest ever for its level of initial gross, and more so for a film with an A- Cinemascore. Still, let’s be honest: A month ago, a prediction of “Freddy’s” grossing nearly $20 million its second weekend would be considered delusional.
The Blumhouse videogame adaptation is now at $113 million domestic, $217 million total worldwide off a film budgeted at $20 million pre-marketing. Already, that’s a massive...

In what is one of the lowest grossing weekends of the year, Five Nights at Freddy’s was able to overcome a truly horrific second weekend decline of 76% to remain atop the box office with an estimated $19.4 million. As we said in our Thursday predictions, no matter the decline this movie saw, anything it made was just the cherry on top of the massive $80 million sundae it had last week.
It is evident this film was made for the fans and the fans propelled it to that record breaking opening, but with no real appeal to general audiences, we are seeing the type of decline a film like this can have. Of course it really doesn’t matter when your film costs just $20 million to make and has already surpassed $140 million worldwide in just one week. This isn’t a Flash or Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny...

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” collapsed at the box office but still managed to emerge on top. Universal and Blumhouse’s fall sleeper hit has collected $19.4 million in its sophomore outing, resulting in a massive 76% decline from its debut.
Universal and Blumhouse’s spooky video game adaptation, which takes place in a haunted Chuck E. Cheese-esque establishment, has generated a towering $113 million to date. Despite the dramatic drop, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” earned far more than anyone expected with its $80 million opening weekend. So the second-weekend ticket sales are still decent for the $20 million-budgeted film, which landed simultaneously on the streaming service Peacock.
Though Peacock has far fewer subscribers than rivals, like Disney and Netflix, box office analysts suggest the day-and-date digital release is behind the mammoth decline in ticket sales. Even if that’s the case, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is a massive commercial winner. After 10 days of release, it...

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” is having no trouble staying atop the domestic box office, despite projecting a sizable drop from its hefty Halloween weekend opening. The Universal release is looking to earn $17.8 million in its sophomore outing, down 78% from its $80 million debut. It’s a sizable fall, though still somewhat impressive given the film is already available to view on streaming and drew the property’s enthusiastic fans on opening weekend.

At the end of Meg Ryan’s beguiling and grown-up new romantic comedy What Happens Later, a simple dedication card shows on screen that says “For Nora.” And for star, director and co-writer Ryan, that says it all. After an eight-year absence from the screen, Ryan has returned, both in front of and behind the camera, to a genre that made her a huge star thanks also in large part to the late great Nora Ephron, whose trio of collaborations with Ryan — When Harry Met Sally (directed by Rob Reiner), Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail — truly defined what a joyful experience a romantic comedy could be when in the right hands.

Meg Ryan and David Duchovny swung by “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Friday to talk all things rom-coms — including their new one together, “What Happens Later.”
Kelly Clarkson was shocked to find herself needing to remind Duchovny of a movie he starred in over 20 years ago, because it happened to be one of her favorites of the genre: “What!”
“So I have to say, you’re both in rom-coms that are so massively popular that people love and adore,” Clarkson began before getting cut off by the actor.
“But I’m not, she is,” Duchovny said, pointing to Ryan.
“You are!” Ryan responded, assuringly.
“‘Return to Me’ is like, one of my favorite… what?” Clarkson said in visible disbelief.
“Ok!” Duchovny said, conceding that he had, in fact, starred in a romantic comedy.

The actor also takes on directing duties for her return to the genre she’s best known for, opposite David Duchovny, with mostly so-so results
There’s an impressive level of confidence displayed by Meg Ryan in her second outing as director, less so for what the film itself ends up being but more for what she’s trying to emulate. The star of When Harry Met Sally making a talky two-hander romcom, dedicated to that film’s screenwriter, Nora Ephron, demands an immediate comparison to one of the greatest examples of the genre ever made. But What Happens Later, Aka When Meg Met David Duchovny, is set up for an almighty fall, struggling to even deserve comparison to the star’s less-lauded romcoms.

It makes sense that Meg Ryan would want to direct a romantic comedy like “What Happens Later” — her performances in “When Harry Met Sally,” “You’ve Got Mail” and others just about define the genre. So she knows a thing or two about capturing that spark between two fledgling lovers.
Speaking with TheWrap ahead of the movie’s Friday release thanks to its SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement, the rom-com icon said that the very best of the genre should center on characters that keep an audience “yearning.”
“You just want to root for them,” she said. “I want that feeling, to root for these two people, to know better than they do, as the audience, that they’re perfect together.”

Meg Ryan has returned to rom-coms, but sadly, even one she co-wrote and directed is not worthy of her charm. Ryan co-stars alongside David Duchovny in “What Happens Later,” based on the play “Shooting Star” by Steven Dietz. Ryan co-wrote the script along with playwright Dietz and Kirk Lynn; the film marks her sophomore directorial effort following 2015’s WWII drama “Ithaca.”
In the film, Ryan and Duchovny play two halves of the same whole — literally. Both star-crossed characters are named W. Davis, which the script reminds audiences every ten minutes or so in metronome-like precision. The first W. Davis, William, who goes by Bill (Duchovny), is a former poet and songwriter-turned-stockbroker whose youthful artistic hopes are rekindled after running into his ex-girlfriend, Willa (Ryan). Their bickering turns to banter turns to, yes, an inevitable return to romance as both W. Davises are stuck in a podunk airport 25 years after last seeing each other.

This weekend was originally supposed to be an epic one. In a perfect world the SAG-AFTRA strike would have been settled months ago (or never happened) and some of the biggest movies of the Fall season would not have been forced to vacate their original dates. Such is the case of this first weekend of November 2023 when Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two was supposed to hit theaters. Sadly back on August 24, it was announced that Warner Bros had decided to push the release to March 15, 2024 because they felt this movie needed the marketing push of its stars, who are prohibited from even mentioning the movie until the strike is resolved. This Dune series has not had an easy time in its journey to the big screen with the first film receiving the controversial day and date release in 2021 due to the pandemic where it still managed a solid $402 million...

The forthcoming prequel in the Hunger Games franchise has landed an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA ahead of its release next month.
This means that The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, the Lionsgate feature hitting theaters Nov. 17, can have its onscreen talent promote the film in the coming weeks. Francis Lawrence directs a cast that includes Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Josh Andrés Rivera and Viola Davis.
The film is eligible because Lionsgate is not part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which is currently engaged in negotiations with SAG-AFTRA amid the actors strike.
Other recent projects to have received an interim agreement for publicity purposes include Bleecker Street’s What Happens Later, A24’s Priscilla and Iron Claw, Neon’s Ferrari and concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

Meg Ryan is “enchanting.” It’s hard to think of a better word to describe her than the one Nora Ephron used in the “You’ve Got Mail” script — a word repeated four times in the first 30 minutes of the 1998 film.
My ears perk up when Ryan uses it now, nearly 25 years later. We’re sitting across from each other in a suite at the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills, meeting to speak about her new film — her first in eight years. She’s the co-writer, director, executive producer and co-star, alongside David Duchovny, of “What Happens Later,” an enchanting romantic comedy about ex-lovers who find themselves stranded by a snowstorm.
There’s no denying that Ryan, 61, is a movie star. Only, she doesn’t seem to know it: She pulls her overcoat tight around her body to cover up any ostentatiously fancy garments she may have underneath. Throughout our conversation,...

Next weekend will seemingly be one of the more quiet weekends at the box office of the fall season. While several new releases are indeed hitting theaters, it's sort of a calm before the storm before "The Marvels" arrives. But if there is one movie that seems like it could have a possible breakout run (relatively speaking), it's A24's "Priscilla." Directed by Sofia Coppola, the film will focus on the life of Priscilla Presley, the wife of Elvis Presley, one of the most beloved musicians of all time. Will that connection to the king of rock 'n roll translate to ticket sales? That's the big question.
Official box office tracking has not been revealed for the film, and it often isn't a thing at all for smaller movies. That said, the folks at Box Office Pro have "Priscilla" taking in anywhere between $3 and $8 million on opening weekend. Complicating matters...

Exclusive: Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Timothy V. Murphy (Appaloosa) and Bruce Greenwood (The Fall of the House of Usher) have boarded The Fabulous Four, a new comedy from Bleecker Street, which has entered production in Georgia under an Interim Agreement from SAG-AFTRA.
Timothy V. Murphy and Bruce Greenwood
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, and Megan Mullally, as previously announced. Ralph takes over the role of Sissy Spacek, who was attached as of last fall but was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Meg Ryan says her nearly decade-long absence in Hollywood was an active choice for the actress, who wanted to have a life beyond the cameras.
In a cover story for People magazine tied to her new romcom What Happens Later, the director and actress spoke about her eight-year hiatus from the screen and what about her latest film drew her back to acting.
Speaking to her own eight-year hiatus from Hollywood, Ryan said it was really about seeing work as work, and wanting to focus on other elements of her life. “It’s nice to think of it as a job and not a lifestyle. And that is a great way of navigating it for me,” she explained.
Part of that break was about focusing on her role as a mother to son Jack, now 31, with ex-husband Dennis Quaid and her 18-year-old daughter Daisy, whom she adopted in 2006. “I took...

Taylor Swift always knew her record-breaking Eras Tour wouldn’t be confined to the mega-sized stadiums she was selling out. And she was right: Her accompanying concert film — which brings the epic, three-hour show to its widest audience yet — enters theaters on Oct. 13 as one of the highest-grossing in history with $100 million in advance global ticket sales.
But the film’s journey to cinemas was as layered and complex as a Swift lyric, involving unorthodox strategies, bruised egos and one monster payday for the pop star at the center of it all.
