Every A24 Movie Coming Out in 2025 and Beyond
Image
Editor’s note: this list was originally posted January 2025. It will be periodically updated to reflect new release date announcements.

It’s rare for a studio to become a brand, but A24 has managed it. Since its humble beginnings as a New York-based distribution company founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in August 2012, A24 has become synonymous with quality for film lovers, the place that releases the must-see indies everyone is talking about.

A24’s first film was the little-seen and little-loved “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” from Roman Coppola, which hit theaters in February 2013 to muted fanfare. But the movie that really put the company on the map was “Spring Breakers,” Harmony Korine’s wild crime comedy that released in March that same year and established many of the conventions associated with the brand: Artful neon cinematography, shocking content and stylized violence,...

Sorry, Baby Trailer: Eva Victor’s Sundance Stand-Out Arrives This June
Image
The finest narrative film to emerge from the Sundance Film Festival this year, Eva Victor’s directorial debut Sorry Baby non-chronologically follows the writer-director as a woman reeling from a traumatic event in her past. Backed by Barry Jenkins and Adele Romanski’s Pastel, who also produced Aftersun, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, and Never Rarely Sometimes Always, we recently featured the film in our summer movie preview. With a cast also including Naomi Ackie, Lucas Hedges, John Carroll Lynch, Louis Cancelmi, and Kelly McCormack, A24 has now released the first trailer ahead of a June 27 release.

I said in my Sundance review, “Navigating the pieces of a shattered life, Victor (who both wrote and directed the film) handles such delicate subject matter with not only piercing, emotional insight but a sense of surprising humor in a miracle of tone and storytelling. The themes her debut explores––how sexual...

Twenty-Nine Palms Entertainment Sets First Sales Acquisition With ‘Before We Forget’
Image
Exclusive: Twenty-Nine Palms Entertainment, the new London-based international sales and production company launched by Edoardo Bussi last month, has unveiled Before We Forget as its first global acquisition for its upcoming Cannes slate.

The nostalgic, coming-of-age story marks the feature directorial debut of Argentinian actor Juan Pablo Di Pace, and Andrés Pepe Estrada, who is best known as an award-winning editor on films such as Argentina, 1985 and Upon Open Sky).

Di Pace stars as man looking back on the moments that shaped him, returning to memories of his student days in 1990s Italy, to rediscover the friendships, heartbreaks, and quiet triumphs of youth. As the line between past and present begins to blur, he understands that growing up never truly ends, and that looking back can be the only way to move forward.

Originally titled Duino, the Argentinian-Italian-u.S. co-production is lead produced by Di Pace’s Momento Films.

Rumor: Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus Sequel Will Feature A Predator
Image
We recently learned that Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez is working on the script for a direct sequel to the block-busting sci-fi horror movie, and it sounds like the follow-up might just lay the groundwork for a new Alien vs. Predator film.

Álvarez confirmed that he's currently developing the story during a recent interview with Empire, while promising that the movie will take the classic franchise "into uncharted waters."

“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”

Alvarez also reiterated that the current plan is to follow the survivors of the previous film, Cailee Spaeny’s Rain Carradine and her...

A new month has brought another wave of streaming acquisitions for Max subscribers to enjoy. ‘Aftersun’ Star Frankie Corio Had ‘Almost No Idea the Movie Was Supposed to Be Sad’
Image
“Aftersun” actress Frankie Corio admits she had “no idea” how melancholy Charlotte Wells’ debut feature gets. Corio, who co-stars with Paul Mescal in the 2022 Oscar-nominated film, shared on TikTok that writer/director Wells purposefully kept her in the dark about the true plot.

Mescal plays Corio’s onscreen father, whose vacation takes a very dark turn that will remain unspoiled. Wells took inspiration from her own dynamic with her late dad for her directorial debut. However, young actress Corio was only allowed to know her own scenes, and not the darker, more internal sequences with Mescal’s character.

“Funny story, I had almost no idea the film was supposed to be sad!” Corio wrote. “Charlotte the director only let me read my scenes. None of Paul’s…She wanted it to be very natural and truly unaware.”

In one of the most memorable scenes, single father Calum (Mescal) violently dances...

Which Categories Should the Oscars Add Next?
Image
When the 98th annual Oscars arrives next year, it will come with the addition of one long-desired new category: an Academy Award for Achievement in Casting. Two years later, the 100th annual Oscars will include its own new category: Achievement in Stunt Design. After that? We’ve got a few ideas for some other additions.

Both the casting and stunt design awards arrive after years of campaigning from artisans, filmmakers, stars, and even the general public. Make a good enough case, it seems, and AMPAS just might grant you an Oscar statuette-sized wish. Still, it does take time: Before the casting award was announced, the ceremony had not added a new award since 2001, when the organization added Best Animated Feature Film.

Last week’s announcement of the new stunt design category inevitably got us wondering: What other categories should the Oscars add? From bringing back an old favorite, cribbing from other awards shows,...

Norwegian Rising Talent Vegard Dahle on Cannes Frontières-Bound ‘Light Years’: ‘More Nordic Noir Than Typical Hollywood Sci-Fi’ (Exclusive)
Image
Norway’s recent contribution to genre movies has largely been via disaster, horror comedy (“The Ugly Sister”), supernatural terror or fantasy thriller (“Troll”).

With his feature debut “Light Years” (“Lysår”) to be pitched at Cannes’ Frontières Platform next month, rising talent Vegard Dahle (“Penthouse”) will expand Nordic Noir into the rarely explored sci-fi realm.

Based on the eponymous novel by Dridrik Moritz Hallstrøm, which Dahle adapted for the screen together with the author and Anna Lian, the story turns on astronaut Norway as he awakens on a failing spaceship, his past erased to keep him sane on the lifelong mission. When he stops taking the suppression drug and memories of his daughter left behind start to resurface, the astronaut must decide – either to restore the illusion or face the hard truth, no matter the cost, reads the logline.

“I knew immediately that this book was meant to be a film,...

‘Banger’ Netflix Review: Vincent Cassel Is The Highlight Of This Boring DJ Film
Image
One could consider it funny how Vincent Cassel went from playing Marcus in Irreversible to a DJ named Scorpex in So-Me’s Banger, but maybe in another world we’d see angry Marcus grow up and vent out all his energy turning tables, eh? Banger is a comedy movie set in France that tells the story of a DJ turned secret agent. The story is a very basic spy adventure, but it’s honestly most lacking in terms of comedy. I think if you watched the movie without any expectations at all, you might enjoy it just a little bit. Remember when Zayn Malik made Bollywood movie-level music videos just for fun? Well, this movie feels like an extended cut of a music video like that. In the movie, Luis is a forgotten DJ who is just trying to stay relevant until he’s asked by the police to help...

The Beatles, one of the most iconic bands of all time, is set to receive a cinematic tribute. Director Sam Mendes has announced that this groundbreaking project will be quite different from a conventional biopic.

Instead of a single film, four separate biopics—each focusing on a different member of the Fab Four—will come together as a four-film cinematic event. Mendes believes this will be the “first bingeable theatrical experience.”

4 movies. 4 leads. How might Sony handle the Oscars campaign for Sam Mendes’s unprecedented quartet of Beatles movies
Image
It’s never too early to think about next year’s Oscars, but what about the Oscars four years from now? On Monday night, Sony closed out its CinemaCon presentation by announcing the main cast for Sam Mendes’s unprecedented tetralogy about the Beatles. Called The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event, the features will star Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. In a further gambit of experimentation, all four movies will debut within the same month, April 2028. Although Sony didn’t reveal its specific release plans, Mendes and Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chair Tom Rothman called the films the "first bingeable theatrical experience."

"Each one is told from the distinct perspective of just one of the guys," Mendes said of his plans for the movies, which the Oscar-winning director said would be in production for at least a year.

Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in Aftersun (2022)
Beyond Representation: Genuine Storytelling in Contemporary Coming-of-Age Cinema
Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in Aftersun (2022)
Over the past half-decade, a subtle revolution in cinema has shifted coming-of-age filmmaking. Whereas past decades had made significant advances toward making the face of the cinema population more representative, recent movies have stepped further than just representation into investigating the complicated dynamics of cultural identity and between-generation connection. “Aftersun,” “Past Lives,” and “The Farewell” are films that speak to a new artistic direction—where richly personal narratives are used to develop universally accessible emotional resonance in an insistence on situatedness in specific cultural locales.

This new generation of filmmakers eschews the didactic or performative aspects that sometimes defined previous efforts at diversity on screen. Rather, filmmakers such as Charlotte Wells, Celine Song, and Lulu Wang tap into autobiographical sources to produce work that is less statement about identity and more glimpse into the lived-in experience. Their movies don’t so much explain cultural difference as ask viewers to occupy it.

The Odyssey Star Reveals Why Christopher Nolan Is Operating the Big-Budget Blockbuster 'Like an Indie Film'
Image
Though The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan's next big-budget blockbuster, it appears the Oscar-winning director is running his upcoming adaptation like it's on a much smaller scale. One member of Nolan's star-studded cast claims the British helmer's production operates "like an indie film."

Speaking with MSNBC's Morning Joe (via Collider), Leguizamo opened up about principal photography for The Odyssey, which began last month in Morocco. Though the film is one of Nolan's priciest, Leguizamo spoke of the director's more humble approach to the production. “Dude, you know the thing is, okay, he’s got a crazy budget. It’s not small, but he runs [it] like an indie film because he’s not doing it by committee, he’s not doing it by what the studio says. He’s like an indie filmmaker but with crazy money,” he said.

The Odyssey won't come cheap for Nolan and Universal Pictures, with the film's budget being $250 million,...

John Leguizamo Says Christopher Nolan Makes ‘The Odyssey’ Feel ‘Like an Indie Film’: ‘He’s Not Doing It by What the Studio Says’
Image
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film has by no means, a small premise. An adaptation of the classic “The Odyssey,” the film includes a large cast of some of the biggest Hollywood stars. But cast member John Leguizamo says Nolan still manages to make the production feel like an independent film.

“Dude, you know the thing is, okay he’s got a crazy budget, it’s not small, but he runs [it] like an indie film because he’s not doing it by committee, he’s not doing it by what the studio says,” Leguizamo said in a recent interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“He’s like an indie filmmaker but with crazy money,” he added.

“The Odyssey” stars Matt Damon as Odysseus in a cast that also includes Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie and Jon Bernthal.

“Nobody can be Woody Harrelson”: Hunger Games Producer Has an Impossible Task for a Young Haymitch but There’s a Solution
Image
Some casting decisions are so challenging they make you wonder if Hollywood secretly enjoys stress. Trying to find a young Haymitch Abernathy? That’s like trying to find a unicorn that also happens to be a method actor.

We all know Woody Harrelson didn’t just play Haymitch, he became him. The man exuded charm, sarcasm, and just the right amount of “I’ve seen things” energy that made his portrayal unforgettable. Now, with Sunrise on the Reaping, The Hunger Games prequel in the works, the casting gods have their work cut out for them.

But hey, it’s not like this is the first time Hollywood has faced a character recast dilemma. Young Han Solo? That went… let’s just say Alden Ehrenreich tried his best. A new Wolverine post-Hugh Jackman? That debate alone could start a world war.

10 Amazing A24 Movies You Need to Mentally Prepare For
Image
A24's reputation within the film industry is anything but ordinary. It was founded as a distribution company in 2012 by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel and John Hodges. The three aimed to reinvigorate the cinematic landscape with films that allowed filmmakers to take risks. Studio influence can be a significant inhibitor of the final product and can often interfere with more original ideas in favor of appealing to widespread audiences.

This emphasis on creative freedom has designated A24 as a company that experiments with unconventional storytelling and technicalities, resulting in truly moving experiences for all varieties of audiences. Many A24 films can be classified as touching, thought-provoking, and even disturbing, so it might be best to be in a clear-headed mindset before embarking on the wild ride these films offer.

The Highest-Rated Female-Directed Movies On Metacritic
Image
The directors that popular culture considers to be the greatest of all time — Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, for example — are almost always men. While female directors have spearheaded successful films across genres like superhero, action, and horror, it is men who typically receive the funding, global attention, and prestige projects that cement their legacy in film history.

There have only been 10 women nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, and it wasn't until 2021 that more than one woman was nominated in the category: Chloé Zhao for "Nomadland" and Emerald Fennell for "Promising Young Woman." In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, only three women have won the Best Director prize: Chloé Zhao, Jane Campion, and Kathryn Bigelow.

There are so many incredible films made by visionary female directors, even ones that haven't received Oscar attention. Many of these films appear on Metacritic's highest-rated list. Metacritic celebrates...

The Best Female-Directed Movie On Metacritic Is Also The Best Father-Daughter Movie Of All Time
Image
With a score of 95 on Metacritic, Charlotte Wells' stunning directorial debut, "Aftersun," outranks some of the best father-daughter movies of all time, including "Paper Moon," "To Kill a Mockingbird," and "Interstellar." Having the positive influence of a paternal figure can help shape how a child (regardless of gender) discovers their confidence and self-worth, but father-daughter relationships, in particular, are a special kind of bond. While this obviously does not apply to everyone, good fathers can influence how a young woman understands healthy relationships and expects to be treated by their partner. It's endearing to see films portray nurturing men who care for their daughters, listening to them not only as authoritative parents but also as friends and openly encouraging their emotional well-being.

In "Aftersun," we view Sophie's relationship with her father, Calum, through the hazy lens of her adult memories as she reflects on their Turkish holiday twenty years ago.

How ‘Together’, ‘Sorry, Baby’ Producer Managed to Make Five Indie Films Last Year
Image
The 2025 Sundance Film Festival was largely seen as a mutated affair, with a line-up focused on discovery over commerciality. But for producer-financier Tango Entertainment, where credits run the gamut from Oscar-nominated Aftersun to Weird Al Yankovic movie Weird, and its head Lia Buman, the festival was particularly notable.

With three films in the line-up, Tango landed the most moneyed deal to date out of Sundance, when Together, the supernatural horror starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, sold to Neon for a reported $17 million. Another title, Sorry, Baby, the directorial debut from Eva Victor, became one of the best reviewed movies of the festival and landed distribution with A24. And then there was the Chloe Sevigny starrer Magic Farm, which was acquired by Mubi ahead of the fest.

At a time in the industry, in particular in independent production, when market forces are causing many to pull back, the six-person team at Tango doubled down,...

‘Normal People’ Actor Say He’d Prefer No Sequel For Hit Drama Starring Paul Mescal, Daisy Edgar-Jones
Image
Since its release, there has been clamor for a sequel to the hit TV drama Normal People, which made breakthrough stars of its two leads Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones when it was released during lockdown in April 2020.

But one of the cast, Irish actor Éanna Hardwicke, has shared he doesn’t like the idea of a sequel, as he’s “not a fan of rehashing things.”

BBC News reports that the actor was speaking at a pre-Oscars party in Los Angeles Thursday evening.

The BBC drama was adapted by writer Sally Rooney from her own bestselling novel and followed the on-off relationship of Irish teenagers Marianne and Connell.

Hardwicke played Rob, a schoolfriend of Connell’s, in the series. He told BBC News: “It’s nicer to leave it in people’s imagination, and leave it as it was.”

There was excitement last year when the two leads, who have remained close friends,...

What’s Leaving Netflix in March 2025
Image
Pictures via Netflix, Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures and Hulu

2025 is in full swing, and with March just around the corner, it’s time for you to look ahead at the movies and series scheduled to depart Netflix throughout the month of March. The biggest notable TV series leaving is The Mindy Project, while hit films like Scooby-Doo and Love Again, among others, are also set to depart.

As always, Netflix’s library is constantly evolving. That means new titles are always on the way, but because Netflix licenses titles from big distributors, they’re not always on Netflix forever. When this license (or rental period) comes to an end, the movie or series leaves Netflix.

Note: This list will be constantly updated throughout February as we learn of more series and movies set to leave (typically 30 days before their departure). In the last few weeks of the month, Netflix...

Amanda Seyfried Says Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold’s ‘Ann Lee’ Religious Musical Is ‘Crazy’
Image
Amanda Seyfried is singing the praises of just how “crazy” — in a good way — Mona Fastvold’s upcoming “Ann Lee” musical is. Seyfried stars in the title role of the historical film, which centers on the religious leader Ann Lee, who founded the Shaker Movement in the late 1770s. Lee’s followers deemed her the female Jesus Christ, and her worshippers prayed through song and dance, hence her story getting the musical biopic treatment.

The film is co-written by Fastvold and her “The Brutalist” collaborator and real-life partner Brady Corbet. The pair are currently nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for their work on the film, which is also nominated for Best Picture and in a slew of other categories.

Seyfried told Vanity Fair that shooting Fastvold and Corbet’s secret indie film after wrapping the upcoming Peacock limited series “Long Bright River,” was tough. “I went to hell and back,...

Berlin’s Teddys Give Queer Cinema a Boost as LGBTQ+ Rights Erode Around the Globe
Image
This year marks the 39th annual Teddy Award honors, the longest-running LGBTQ+ prizes at any major film festival. While the Feb. 21 closing ceremony is business as usual for the Berlinale, global events could make this one of the most important years in Teddy history.

U.S. President Trump is implementing numerous anti-transgender policies, withdrawing President Biden’s executive order making federal agencies enforce a 2020 Supreme Court ruling that sex discrimination laws include LGBTQ discrimination, and even declaring that there are only two sexes – seemingly oblivious to children born intersex, a plot point in one of this year’s biggest Oscar contenders. His appointee Elon Musk regularly makes anti-trans statements and endorsed Germany’s far-right AfD party, which has opposed some gay rights. And rapper Kanye West has proudly aligned himself with the Nazi party, unaware or unconcerned that it persecuted Black people like him during Hitler’s reign.

Yet for now,...

A24's 'Past Lives' Returns to Streaming Ahead of Valentine's Day
Image
The past decade has seen studio A24's popularity rise sharply, thanks to the immense success of horror films like Hereditary, Midsommar, and Pearl, and dramas like Uncut Gems, Aftersun, and Lady Bird. It felt like 2016's Moonlight ushered the studio into a new era, winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The last few years have seen the studio continue its upwards trend, with Everything Everywhere All at Once winning Best Picture in 2023, along with six other awards. A24 released another incredible drama that same year, Past Lives, which itself earned two Oscar nominations in 2024, and the film has finally found a new streaming home.

A24's Past Lives is now streaming on Prime Video. Last year, the film was available to stream on Netflix, but only remained on the platform for a few months before being removed. Past Lives is arguably one of A24's most gut-wrenching dramas...

Ghost Rider: 6 Actors Who Could Play The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spirit Of Vengeance
Image
Nicolas Cage played Ghost Rider in two disappointing Sony Pictures movies. When the sequel bombed, the rights to the character reverted to Marvel Studios and that's where he's remained ever since.

As we write this, rumours are swirling about the Spirit of Vengeance appearing in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Spider-Man 4. There's also been chatter of a solo movie or TV series, suggesting there are finally firm plans for the anti-hero after Robbie Reyes' brief stint in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In this feature, we've selected six actors we think would be a good pick to bring Johnny Blaze to life on screen in the MCU. Hopefully, you'll find these names a refreshing change of pace from the usual suspects who crop up online.

To check them out, simply click on the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

Sundance Review: Eva Victor’s Debut Sorry, Baby is a Singular Revelation
Image
Agnes’ (Eva Victor) life is defined by a sense of stagnancy. Four years after completing grad school in rural New England, she’s living in the same house and going to the same building, only now as a professor. Whatever true joy she seems to experience is infrequent visits from her best friend and former roommate Lydie (Naomi Ackie), who has moved on, starting a family in New York City. As Victor assiduously peels back the layers of her sharp, unnerving, witty feature debut Sorry, Baby, the reason for being stuck in time becomes clear: in her final days of grad school she was raped by her advisor, who quickly deserted the town, leaving no culpability and even less sense of justice or closure.

Navigating the pieces of a shattered life, Victor (who both wrote and directed the film) handles such delicate subject matter with not only piercing, emotional insight...

Alien: Here's The Latest On Sigourney Weaver's Rumored Return As "De-Aged" Ripley
Image
The recent rumor that the next Alien movie might be set to bring back Sigourney Weaver to play a de-aged Ellen Ripley was met with a mixture of excitement and trepidation from fans of the classic sci-fi horror franchise, but it seems we won't be seeing the iconic heroine in action again after all - at least, not in the Romulus sequel.

Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez responded on social media, stating that the report was "fun gossip. But not true at all."

Timothée Chalamet is the youngest multiple Best Actor Oscar nominee since James Dean
Image
Youth is not wasted on the young, especially if you’re Timothée Chalamet. The A Complete Unknown star made Oscar history in more ways than one with his Best Actor nomination for the Bob Dylan biopic on Thursday.

Chalamet, who turned 29 on Dec. 27, is the youngest person to score multiple Best Actor nominations since James Dean. As writer and film historian Mark Harris first noted on Bluesky, both men accomplished this feat before the age of 30. Chalamet received his first bid at 22 for 2017’s Call Me by Your Name. Dean died at 24 in September 1955 in a car crash. Less than six months later, Dean received a posthumous nomination for East of Eden. He earned a second one the following year for Giant and remains the only performer to receive multiple posthumous nominations.

Chalamet is the youngest nominee in his category, which includes The Brutalist‘s Adrien Brody (51), Sing Sing‘s...

‘A Thousand and One,’ ‘The Woman King,’ ‘Barbie’ Top Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, Adobe’s Latest Film List
Image
Ahead of the Oscar nominations being unveiled, USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the Adobe Foundation have released a new edition of their Inclusion List, with a focus on movies.

The top-scoring movies for supporting gender inclusion on screen and behind the cameras were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. For race and ethnicity, the top-scoring movies were Joy Ride, A Thousand and One, The Color Purple, House Party and The Blackening.

In an earlier Inclusions List, 476 theatrically released movies from 2019 to 2023 were analyzed, with on screen and behind-the-camera data used to determine the 150 most inclusive films in that four-year period. The latest Inclusion List builds on that ranking with a new set of films from 2023.

“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds. In the second year of its release,...

‘Barbie,’ ‘A Thousand and One’ and ‘Joy Ride’ Rank Among the Inclusion List’s 150 Most Inclusive Films
Image
Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.

The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.

“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

USC Annenberg’s Latest Film Inclusion List Adds ‘A Thousand And One’, Three Other 2023 Films To Top 10 List
Image
The second iteration of The Inclusion List from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023, adding to its initial class of 100 films by naming 50 new titles for the year 2023.

Four films from that year have made it into the Top 10 Most Inclusive Films for that timespan, according to the study released Wednesday, with A Thousand and One taking the No. 2 spot overall, Bottoms coming in seventh, The Color Purple ninth and The Blackening in 10th.

The list’s point system took into account talent both in front of and behind the camera, with a total of 20 points broken down into 10-point halves for both on-screen and off-screen inclusion. Two distinct processes were used, one for leads/co-leads and the other for all speaking characters. A film could earn up to 10 points for on-screen inclusion based on the five inclusion indicators across leads/co leads (up to 5 points) and all speaking characters (up to 5 points).

A Thousand and One ranks second with a score of 13.6/20, while Bottoms scores a 12.2/20. The Color Purple and The Blackening are tied with a score of 11.8/20. The highest scoring film on the list remains Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (2022) with a 15/20.

The list also evaluated 2023 films displaying the best inclusivity across five categories: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age. It named five of the most inclusive 2023 films within each of those categories.

The 2023 films that scored the highest for the gender indicator of inclusion were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. A Thousand and One also scored high on the race/ethnicity list alongside 2023’s Joy Ride, The Color Purple, The Blackening and House Party. In the LGBTQ+ category, the top five films of 2023 were All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin and Saltburn. 2023 releases ranking high in the disability category included What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, Moving On, Golda and The Holdovers. Films from 2023 that scored highest in their representation of age on the big screen were Moving On, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, The Miracle Club and Golda.

Researchers also took into consideration the race and ethnicity of crew members in the roles of director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, production designer, costume designer, casting director and assistant director.

The second Inclusion List also names 25 top achievers across inclusion metrics and 50 new winners for 2023 cinema. Released Jan. 22, the results calls attention to directors, editors and distributors involved in projects with the highest percentage of women and people of color employees who aided in the process of production from start to finish line.

Out of 400 evaluated directors, five were named the most inclusive: Catherine Hardwicke, Olivia Wilde, Destin Daniel Cretton, Reinaldo Marcus Green and Kasi Lemmons.

Eight editors were noted for their work in film over the past five years, including Annette Davey, Anne McCabe, Blair McClendon, Catrin Hedström, Hilda Rasula, Harry Yoon, Mary Jo Markey.

The top distributors — companies responsible for bringing top-ranking diverse films to audiences — were listed by the quantity of how many films released: Universal (29), Sony Pictures (21), Warner Bros (18) and, for smaller distributors, A24 (14), MGM (10) and Bleecker Street (9).

A panel discussing the results featuring Smith, Sumi Parekh, Executive Director, Group Effort Initiative, Tracy Oliver, Screenwriter, Director, Producer and Showrunner, Jesse Williams, Actor, Director, Activist, Dewayne Perkins, Writer, Actor, Producer, and Amy White, Global Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Adobe, is set for Friday at Adobe House on the ground at the Sundance Film Festival.

20 Best Movies About Mother-Son Relationships, Ranked

Father and daughter relationships in movies are fairly common in film, with some of the most touching and profound movies — including 2022's heart-wrenching Aftersun — properly reflecting on the poignant connection. However, mother and son bonds are seemingly less discussed in cinema and are arguably more complex in the instances where they are, as seen in films like Hereditary and the new science fiction franchise Dune.

All Of Us Strangers Ending Explained: The Power Of Love
Image
This post contains major spoilers for "All of Us Strangers."

As Hollywood continues to capitalize on our nostalgia-obsessed monoculture with "Harry Potter" reboot shows and superhero movies stuffed with cameos from erstwhile stars, a series of much more thoughtful films have been quietly probing the darker side of nostalgia. Charlotte Wells quietly broke hearts in 2022 with "Aftersun," a film that gilds its elegy for lost innocence with the unmistakable textures of a '90s childhood. Then, with its unique aesthetic, "Skinamarink" upended the very concept of nostalgia, creating a haunting tapestry of childhood images shot in the director's own childhood home. That same year, another film shot in the house where its director grew up continued this trend of examining the dark underbelly of nostalgia.

"All of Us Strangers" was written and directed by Andrew Haigh, who loosely based the story on the 1987 novel "Strangers" by Japanese writer Taichi Yamada.

Paul Mescal is strapping in for a filmmaking journey like no other. The Aftersun star revealed he had second thoughts when signing up for Richard Linklater’s Merrily We Roll Along, a film set to be shot over 20 years. “I probably thought, ‘Oh, fuck!’” Mescal told Esquire UK, acknowledging the magnitude of the commitment.

Linklater, known for his time-lapse epic Boyhood, is tackling Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical with the same long-game approach. The story, originally a Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, follows three friends in reverse chronological order as their careers in entertainment unfold and unravel. Mescal plays Franklin Shepard, a composer, alongside Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein as his closest companions.

Mescal admitted that the daunting timeline might leave him second-guessing his choices: “I think I’m going to spend...
