Anne Darwin now lives alone in the north of England and is reconciled with her two sons.
On 10th April 2003, John Darwin was officially declared dead. Shortly after, Anne claimed £162,000 in life insurance policies.
On 1st December 2007, after 2082 days missing, John Darwin handed himself in at a London Police Station, claiming to have no memory of the past five years.
John Darwin was seen paddling out to sea in his canoe on 21st March 2002, at Seaton Carew. Later the same day, he was reported as "missing" after failing to report to work. A large-scale sea search took place, during which 62 square miles (160 km2) of coastline were searched. Five Lifeboats, two coastguard units, a helicopter and a spotter plane searched for John Darwin for 36 hours.
On 23rd July 2008, John and Anne Darwin were both convicted of fraud. John Darwin was sentenced to six years and three months in prison. Anne Darwin, who was described by the police as a compulsive liar, was sentenced to six years and six months. John Darwin was eventually released from prison in January 2011 and Anne Darwin was released in March 2011.
