Learning life's lessons from the dead
iagbo4526 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
At first I thought this was a story I've seen many times before, of the unmarried woman who drinks too much, whines all the time, wakes up hungover and disheveled, failed marriage or engagement in the recent past, and has loyal friends who repeatedly pull her out of her the mess of her own making. Okay, it IS that, but it's got a delightful quirk - turns out she's an obit writer, and with each assignment, the ghost of the person hangs out and gives her life lessons. Okay, that's cute. And it made me laugh out loud a few times, so I like it and I'm looking forward to the next episode, the next obit, and the next life story.

Pilot

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know how many years we have left of actually getting broadcast comedies that are original and not just repeats, but let's just cherish it while we have it. This is a good, fun little show that has a lot of work to do in terms of writing and acting, but something I could see being worth watching.

Gina Rodriguez is a good lead and a little different than what we usually get and Hannah Simone is good in a supporting role as well. The rest of the cast leaves a lot to be desired, but I feel like this is not going to be an ensemble Office style thing and is more dependent on the particular ghost each week.

Funny & heart-warming but...

Warning: Spoilers
I wish this show was completely just about Gina Rodriguez's & Martin Mull's characters, their banter makes an otherwise meh show great, IMO. Their scenes were funny & genuinely heart-warming & worthy of a positive rating.

But really so much of the rest of this show SCREAMS bad pitch meeting- "New Girl sensibilities meet Ghosts paranormal w/ a Young Sheldon/Big Bang Theory roommate that's opposite gender for the added will they/won't they insurance. You just KNOW that was the pitch!

Is unrealistic that any mgmt level person gives any newspaper writer obit assignments- more than 1 person a week dies in So Cal, btw, & no mgr is doing the grunt work to find out who, I mean get real!

Nothing else about the newspaper workplace is any more believable or well written. The one post-bar scene between Lauren Ash & Gina Rodriguez's characters though was funny & well performed as well as COMPLETELY unrealistic & unbelievable.

The rest of the characters come from a sitcom stereotype checklist.

Again, this episode, for me, was saved by the interactions of Gina Rodriguez & the extremely underrated Martin Mull. Everything else is meh. I already dread the lazy-sitcom-writing foreshadowing the inevitable will they/won't they between Nell & her roommate, ugh, just...UGH!

Hey sitcom writers/network execs, NEWSFLASH- just because you folks seem to be incapable of understanding boundaries & harassing anyone of any gender you find attractive doesn't mean people IRL can't just be platonic friends.

Finally, absolutely ZERO reason is given as to why Nell can see ghosts at all. At least the main character from Ghosts had a near-death experience. Nell just starts talking to a dead person in a bar.

I really want to like this show based on the actors, but the tv writing REALLY lets them down. Hope things get better but not holding my breath.

Incredibly satisfying

What a cute, very entertaining show. Skeptic at first, then really delved into the atmosphere of the comedy induced show with a serious side as well.

I look forward to more shows. I think the writers tapped into a fun idea and my hope is that they make every episode as entertaining as the first.

As new shows seep to appear overnight, it is ... to me one of the better ones and I hope it will be on air for at least 5 (five) seasons.

I say give it time and I am sure even you will find this show is worth the watch.

I think the fact that IMDB has at least a 600 characters a little on the Much side of the equation.

Side note, did anyone else see the "goof?" the Pashmina kept slipping off of Cricket's shoulder. (near the end)
