The Smallville Character You Likely Forgot Dave Bautista Played
Image
Many fans (this writer included), whether they are casual moviegoers or genuine film buffs, seem to be in agreement that Dave Bautista is the best WWE star turned actor. Look no further than his brief role in 2017's "Blade Runner 2049" (a movie that was simply too good to be a box office hit) to see just how much emotional gravitas he can bring to a character, even one with very minimal screen time.

However, before the former WWE champion began tearing it up on the silver screen with heavyweight directors like Denis Villeneuve and James Gunn, he was getting his start on The CW's "Smallville." Bautista made his acting debut in the show's sixth season, playing Aldar, a powerful criminal entity who is accidentally released from the Phantom Zone. While the character only appears in one episode, he leaves an incredibly bloody impression.

Immediately upon his arrival on Earth,...

Andrew Lloyd Webber Teases ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ New York Return In “Better Area” Than Broadway
Image
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is doing some heavy hinting that his The Phantom of the Opera musical – or some version of it – is returning to New York two years after the show ended its 35-year Broadway run.

In a new Instagram video – watch it below – Lloyd Webber, pretending to speak for the Phantom character, says that the musical is returning but at “a better address in New York, in a better area.” The video shows Lloyd Webber standing in front of what, as the website Broadway World points out, looks like the now-closed Lee’s Art Shop on West 57th St. not far from Carnegie Hall and various high-end retail shops.

Last year, producer Cameron Mackintosh and Lloyd Webber announced plans for a North American tour of Phantom in a reconfigured production based on the 2021 London stage version that features a smaller orchestra and a redesigned set, launching November 2025 at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre.

15 Terrible Movies By Great Directors
Image
If you're ever having a bad day or feeling like you're not good enough, remember that Steven Spielberg has made some pretty bad movies. That's not to disparage the Beard. He's an iconic director and a huge reason for Hollywood's astronomical success in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. Indeed, he belongs on the Mount Rushmore of great filmmakers -- but he's far from perfect. Yes, even Steven freaking Spielberg is not immune from making a bad call now and again. Somehow, every time he seemingly hits a low point, like immediately after 1990's "Hook," he bounces back with a vengeance, namely the one-two punch of "Jurassic Park" and Best Picture winner "Schindler's List."

He's not the only one. James Cameron, Ron Howard, Peter Jackson, and George Lucas proudly stand atop this list of 15 great movie directors who made terrible films. As you keep reading, remember that we do...

California Film and TV Tax Credit Program Taps Record 51 Titles As State Aims to Boost Production
Image
A record 51 films will receive tax credits to shoot in California amid a historic downturn in production in the state fueled by an increasingly tit-for-tat incentives race to host Hollywood.

The total marks the highest number of titles selected in a single round of the state’s film and TV tax incentive program, according to the California Film Commission. The productions are estimated to employ 6,490 cast and crew, paying nearly $347 million in wages, and generate roughly $578 million in economic activity.

“While other states try to chase California’s on-screen success, everyone knows the Golden State is the entertainment capital of the world – built through decades of innovation and hard work,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom in a statement. “Today’s awards are vital to keeping production where it belongs – generating thousands of good-paying jobs ‘below the line,’ and supporting the local businesses that rely on a thriving film and television industry.

10 Best '90s Comic Book Movies, Ranked
Image
Comic books have inspired some of the most successful movies of the 21st century, from The Dark Knight and Avengers: Endgame to the Fox X-Men and Sony Spider-Man films. Although these films have raked in billions of dollars for Hollywood, it took a while for the medium to earn its respect. The 1990s stand out as a particularly unique and divisive decade for comic adaptations, with superheroes slowly gaining steam despite a campy, low-budget treatment.

While the 1990s saw some comic book disasters, like Steel and Spawn, it also produced some entertaining and faithful adaptations of classic comics, from superheroes to science fiction movies. Not only was the decade a boom for the comic book industry behind the scenes, but it also spawned a variety of enduring films, even if some weren't well-received at the time. Whether it's a gritty revenge movie or a fun superhero flick, most comic fans...

10 Weirdest Scooby-Doo Villains of All Time (& Why They're Great)

Scooby-Doo is a franchise that has grown and adapted to the times in so many different ways. From its storytelling to its animation to, especially, its monsters. The Classic Universal Pictures Horror Movie That Got Banned In The United Kingdom
Image
Have you seen the Walt Disney-directed animated short "The Skeleton Dance?" A part of Disney's "Silly Symphony" series, the short revolves around four human skeletons dancing merrily in a graveyard, imitating the allegorical Dance of Death (also known as danse macabre). It isn't particularly spooky, but it is a fun, whimsical piece of animation that is still regarded with a sense of nostalgic fondness. However, this 1930 short was not always viewed through such a benign lens. Indeed, "The Skeleton Dance" was banned in Denmark upon its original release, with its subject matter being deemed too ... macabre. This moral stance to justify censorship might seem a bit silly in hindsight, as animated skeletons using bones as a xylophone hardly make for an unsettling premise. Well, in vaguely related news, the short entered the U.S. public domain on January 1, 2025, so you can now enjoy these fine skeletal gentlemen having a gala time to your heart's content.

The Everyman Appeal of Gerard Butler
Image
Why do we like Gerard Butler? As of the publishing of this piece, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is performing as expected, looking to become yet another reliable, mid-budgeted programmer hit for the movie star. It’ll round out nicely in theaters, then do well with VOD and home sales. This kind of success is exceedingly rare these days; even Liam Neeson actioners underperform after years of semi-reliability. So: what is it about Butler?

There is a scene somewhere in the middle of Pantera in which “Big Nick” O’Brien (Butler) and Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson) are sitting outside a bar in the south of France, sipping beers on the come down from a night of hard-partying. Los Angeles cop Big Nick has both “gone gangster” and gone international, turning to a life of crime and following Donnie into a heist-laden world of intrigue. The two frenemies proceed to...

10 Best '90s Fantasy & Adventure Movies
Image
Since the days of cinema classics like Ben-Hur, fantasy movies have set the benchmark for quality, high-budget entertainment, as can be seen in iconic franchises like The Lord of the Rings. From focusing on heroes embarking on epic quests to reimaginings of beloved fairy tales, the 1990s gave audiences some of the most enjoyable entries in the genre, though with an emphasis on smaller budgets, comedy, and animation.

The 1990s saw something of a slump in fantasy cinema, as the '80s had no shortage of campy flops in the genre, but still remains a great decade for family-oriented adventure. From worlds populated by knights and dragons to reboots of classic Universal Monsters, the decade is practically synonymous with adventure. With many of these movies still household names for fantasy fans, it's worth remembering some of the best the '90s had to offer.

Rachel Zegler Is Reportedly Eyed to Star in Disney’s Upcoming ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ Project
Image
Disney+ is gearing up for a fresh adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, this time with a modern twist aimed at young adults. According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler, known for her roles in West Side Story and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is reportedly being considered for the role of Christine, the young soprano who becomes the obsession of the mysterious Opera Ghost.

However, it’s unclear if she’s already in talks or just on the studio’s radar.

This upcoming version, simply titled Phantom, will be directed by Kenny Ortega, the mind behind High School Musical and The Descendants. Ortega’s adaptation will stick to the classic storyline: Erik, a disfigured musical genius living under the Paris Opera House, falls for Christine and manipulates her rise to stardom.

Over the years, The Phantom of the Opera has seen countless adaptations. The most famous is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical,...

Snow White Star Rachel Zegler Reportedly Eyed For Female Lead In Disney+ The Phantom Of The Opera Adaptation
Image
Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.

According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.

Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.

It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

One Qui-Gon Jinn Scene In The Phantom Menace Takes On So Much More Meaning Thanks To Star Wars Legends
Image
One notable line from Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is so much more meaningful in the original Legends continuity. Although Legends went from the official Star Wars continuity to an alternate timeline in April 2014, the original and prequel trilogy films are part of both the Legends and modern canon timelines. For this, the two continuities retroactively give different context to moments in the original six saga films, with one Phantom Menace line being especially somber in the initial timeline.

When Qui-Gon Jinn confirms his Jedi Knighthood to Anakin and Shmi Skywalker in The Phantom Menace, the young Anakin states that “no one can kill a Jedi,” to which Qui-Gon responds with a melancholic “I wish that were so.” The simple line alludes to Qui-Gon’s long and often grim career as a Jedi, with the experienced Jedi Master having witnessed the loss of many other great Jedi.

Superman's New Weapon Is Live, And Honestly, It Makes All of His Epic Powers Pointless
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Action Comics #1080!There are few superheroes with as many incredible powers as Superman, but one surprising new invention makes nearly all of his powers useless, as this one weapon seems capable of taking down just about every villain he faces. Superman officially has a new Phantom Zone gun, and it changes the game completely.

Superman's new ridiculously overpowered Phantom Zone weapon debuts in Action Comics #1080 by Mark Waid and Clayton Henry. In this story, dozens of Phantom Zone prisoners have escaped and begun terrorizing the entire universe. Superman obviously can't just drag them back to Earth, so with the help of Mr. Terrific, Superman creates a weapon that's so strong, it kind of invalidates his powers.

His newest weapon is none other than a Phantom Zone Gun, which fires a beam that sends people right back to the Phantom Zone. Mon-El admits that this gun isn't as...

Superman's Brother Is Not Weak Against Kryptonite, But That Doesn't Mean He Is Invulnerable
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Action Comics #1080!Even someone as powerful as Superman is quickly brought down by Kryptonite - but not his brother. As the weakness of every Kryptonian, using Kryptonite is a great idea when hunting down escaped Phantom Zone prisoners, as Superman is in the latest Action Comics arc. But since Superman can't use Kryptonite, he has to rely on his Daxamite brother, Mon-El, who is completely immune to Kryptonite - but not invulnerable.

The Super-Family begin rounding up the escaped Phantom Zone criminals in Action Comics #1080 by Mark Waid and Clayton Henry. Rounding up a bunch of escaped Kryptonians is definitely a difficult task. Naturally, the easiest way to capture the Zoners would be by using Kryptonite, but considering the majority of the Super-Family are themselves Kryptonians, they'd be equally affected by the Kryptonite as well.

Superman and the rest of his family have begun using the new Phantom Zone guns,...

The fan art is a nostalgic reimagining that honors Hartmans unique and eye-catching style while also capturing the essence of Dandadans characters. Kensuke Creations provides fans with a brilliant crossover that offers a fresh yet familiar visual experience.

Wicked Is The Movie Musical Version Of The Star Wars Prequels
Image
The concept of a prequel is a well-worn one in literature. Not only did authors like J.R.R. Tolkien further flesh out their characters and worlds in books set before previously published adventures, but L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," wrote "Ozma of Oz," the first prequel to be set in that particular universe. In cinema, however, the concept took a while to catch on, and it wasn't really until "Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace" that the cinematic prequel became popular. To say that the process had some bumps in the road would be an understatement; "The Phantom Menace" and its two sequels were loudly reviled upon their initial release, with everything from their characters to their dialogue to their visual aesthetic taken to task for not looking or feeling enough like the original "Star Wars" trilogy. Despite George Lucas' claims that the films...

After 63 Years, DC Is Permanently Destroying an Iconic Part of Superman Lore
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Action Comics #1076!With both the Fortress of Solitude and Krypton now destroyed, it seems that DC is finally moving onto destroying Superman's third important location, the Phantom Zone. As Aethyr takes over the Phantom Zone, it's finally crumbling to nothing, and Superman is about to lose the final important landmark in his history.

The surprising destruction of the Phantom Zone is glimpsed and teased in Action Comics #1076 by Mark Waid and Clayton Henry. The Phantom Zone has been taken over by Aethyr, a being who wanted to make the Phantom Zone a better place. Unfortunately, the Phantom Zone is full of violent criminals, and Aethyr quickly realizes the error of his ways in trying to give these people salvation.

I Truly Think DC Has A Problem With Trying to Turn Bruce Wayne's Family into Villains (It's Time to Knock It Off)
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Action Comics #1075 and Batman #154!I really need DC to stop trying to make Batman's family evil, because the Waynes really shouldn't be villains. One of the strangest recurring plot points I've noticed in DC Comics is that every time Superman comes into contact with his father, it's almost always a joyous occasion. But Batman has almost the exact opposite problem, as every time Bruce explores the history of his parents, DC seems hellbent on making them into terrible people, and I wish this plot would stop repeating.

Superman finds himself thrown back through time and ends up on Krypton in Action Comics #1075 by Mark Waid, Clayton Henry, Michael Shelfer, Matt Herms, and Dave Sharpe. With no hope of getting home, Superman tries to enlist the help of Jor-El, his father. While this could be a tense moment where Superman discovers unsavory truths about his father, it seems...

Cyberpunk 2077: How Mr. Hands Changed For Phantom Liberty
Image
Cyberpunk 2077 players will likely be familiar with the enigmatic fixer Mr. Hands, who appears briefly in the main game but features more often in the Phantom Liberty Dlc. Hands is the prominent fixer in the Pacifica and Dogtown districts of Night City, offering jobs centered around the area's criminal underbelly. He's the most distant fixer by far, appearing mostly as a silhouette over holo calls with the only thing visible being his cybernetic hands.

Within the Dlc, V can work more closely with Mr. Hands, eventually meeting him face-to-face as they progress through the story of Phantom Liberty. Some players, however, may not know that the version of Mr. Hands in Phantom Liberty is entirely different from the base game version. In the Dlc, Mr. Hands has undergone a full transformation, in looks, voice, and even personality to effectively result in a new Cyberpunk 2077 character.

Mr. Hands Used To Be...

The Phantom Lives: An Oral History of ‘Phantom of the Paradise’
Image
In the mid-1970s, there was a brief trend going on in the film world: the rock opera movie musical. These were films that had a considerable edge to them, that were attempting to tap into the counter culture generation. In 1975 alone, you had both Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Who’s Tommy come out. But even before that, in 1974, Brian De Palma – who was a mere two years away from the game changer that was Carrie – unleashed his rock opera epic into theaters, Phantom of the Paradise.

Phantom follows a composer named Winslow who wrote a cantata about Faust – a story in which someone sells their soul to the devil. In the case of life imitating art, his opus is stolen by a powerful mogul named Swan, leading Winslow to haunt the newly opened Paradise Theater as a Phantom. The film successfully blends the 70’s rock and roll with horror,...

FBI Season 7 Premiere Review: Tiffany Leaves in the Best Way Possible
Image
The following contains major spoilers for FBI Season 7, Episode 1, "Abandoned," which debuted Tuesday, Oct. 15 on CBS. It also contains discussion of violence.

The FBI Season 7 premiere "Abandoned" doubles as the last episode for Tiffany Wallace, and it balances those two commitments incredibly well. Tiffany gets an almost fully realized goodbye arc, but there's also a completely fleshed out and engaging case of the week for her and her colleagues to solve before she heads out the proverbial door. Fans of the FBI franchise will be satisfied with the episode on almost every level, as the original series continues to be the best of the bunch.

"Abandoned" focuses on the assassination of a Brooklyn plumber, who is revealed to have worked for the CIA to take down an Iranian police official. The title refers to how he and his family were left out in the cold by the Agency after they...

Has Shattered Space Achieved Starfield's Full Potential?
Image
The release of Starfield's first Dlc expansion, Shattered Space, was met with less-than-stellar reviews, but could be the start of a new direction for the RPG. Expanding on an unknown section of Starfield's universe, introducing new locations, NPCs, and additional combat mechanics, Shattered Space had the makings of success but missed the mark on what fans expected in a major Dlc. Despite this, with all the patches and content additions since its release, Starfield is starting to realize some of its untapped potential.

One of the biggest complaints from fans is the lack of overall content in Shattered Space, with many disappointed Starfield fans upset over the execution of House Va'ruun, citing its lack of a unique identity when compared to other factions. Many players also couldn't help but compare Shattered Space to the success of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree or even Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion,...

Superman's New Mission Settles Why He's the Greatest Superhero of All Time
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1070!Superman is the most iconic superhero from any franchise for good reason. His latest mission is the perfect example of what makes him truly "super" - and it has nothing to do with his Kryptonian abilities. After being directly confronted with the suffering in the Phantom Zone, Clark Kent prepares to head inside and investigate, putting himself in incredible danger in order to do what's right by criminals who already hate him.

Action Comics #1070 by Mark Waid, Clayton Henry, Matt Herms, and Dave Sharpe pits Superman and Supergirl against a monstrosity of three Phantom Zone prisoners fused into one being. The unnatural chimera demands in Kryptonian that they kill it, making it clear that its existence is torture. After the immediate threat is handled, Superman steps up by volunteering to go alone into the Phantom Zone to investigate what might be happening to the prisoners.

Image
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1070The Phantom Zone has been a key part of Superman's lore for decades, acting as a prison for foes who can't be won over to the side of good. However, with time, the once seemingly harmless prison has evolved into a torturous dimension that Superman can't abide by. How to Beat Phantom Mage In P3R: Episode Aigis (Weaknesses & Resistances)
Image
Phantom Mage is back with only one weakness Persona 3 Reload players can exploit in the Episode Aigis: The Answer Dlc. Found on the B6 floor of the Cocytus dungeon, this is the first of three consecutive boss battles found within the right Monad Door - containing the most powerful Shadows of the three doors. Knowing the weakness of bosses like Phantom Mage immediately is essential so you can save your squad's Hp and Sp, which would normally be spent on figuring it out on trial and error.

Returning P3R players who've fought these similar Shadows in the base game need to check these as well since a lot of weaknesses & resistances have been altered in the Dlc. This means the loadout of squadmates and Personas you've set up for one boss or set of enemies will be irrelevant now. Even if you don't have the 10 strongest Personas in Persona 3 Reload,...

Disney+ is currently working on a completely new, modern adaptation of Gaston Leroux's classic novel The Phantom of the Opera.

Currently, titled Phantom, the series is in development with Disney Branded Entertainment, with longtime director and producer Kenny Ortega attached to helm the project.
