Mia Farrow Gets Why Actors Still Want to Work With Woody Allen
Image
Over the past few years, a number of actors have expressed their regrets about working with Woody Allen, including Greta Gerwig, Kate Winslet, and Timothée Chalamet. But for those actors who still want to appear in the 88-year-old director’s films? Mia Farrow totally gets it.

“I completely understand if an actor decides to work with him,” Farrow told CBS Sunday Morning. “I’m not one who’d say, ‘Oh, they shouldn’t.’” Farrow, who collaborated with Allen on 13 movies over the course of decades, also says she can separate her experiences on those films from the family turmoil that came afterward. “Oh yeah, yeah.”

Farrow’s latest comments are surprising given the former couple’s history. Farrow and Allen adopted two children together, Dylan and Moses. In the early 1990s, Farrow accused Allen of molesting Dylan. However, the Child Sexual Abuse Clinic of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the New...

“The fail that keeps failing”: Bill Maher Slams Timothée Chalamet, Kate Winslet and Others for Regretting Working With Woody Allen in Hottest Take of 2024
Image
Industry biggies, including the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Kate Winslet, and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig, have shared regret over working with controversial filmmaker Woody Allen. While Allen, who was accused of s-xually molesting his daughter Dylan Farrow, wasn’t convicted of anything in the ’90s, Farrow once again spoke against the alleged incident in an open letter in 2014.

As the allegations resurfaced, several actors shared remorse over associating themselves with the director. But in a recent episode of Club Random podcast, Bill Maher seemingly defended Allen against the allegations and even took shots at actors, who’ve distanced themselves from the director.

Bill Maher Criticizes Actors for Distancing Themselves From Woody Allen

With allegations against Woody Allen resurfacing in the wake of the #MeToo movement, most of Hollywood distanced itself from the filmmaker. This was followed by the HBO documentary series, Allen v. Farrow, which...

Chicago@SXSW: Improv Duo Tj & Dave on TV Pilot ‘Bettendorf Talks’
Image
Chicago – The names “Tj & Dave” are legion in the Chicago entertainment scene. The improvisation duo – T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi – are improv performers who heighten the status of the city as a comedic destination. Now they’re featured in a indie TV pilot that will premiere at SXSW 2024 entitled “Bettendorf Talks.”

The show – produced by Shane Simmons and directed by Jack C. Newell – is a sharp and smart “show within a show” and a workplace comedy regarding the newest (and most unlikely) local talk show to come out of the titular Midwestern Quad City. Hosted by the “has been” comedy duo T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi (who star as caricatures of themselves), the two attempt to mount a hit show in search of a sliver in their former glory. Other featured performers include Tim Kazurinsky, Sadieh Rifal, Brian King. Cassie Kramer, Nnamdi Ngwe, Emma Pope and Ike Reilly.

Venice Doubles (Triples?) Down on Scandal With New Films From Roman Polanski, Woody Allen and Luc Besson
Image
You can pre-set your Twitter (er, X?) alerts to outrage.

The 80th Venice Film Festival unveiled an impressive and — SAG-AFTRA and Wag strike-permitting — star-studded lineup on Tuesday, that should draw international critics and press in droves to the Lido again this year.

But controversy will also again be part of the 2023 Biennale, thanks to a selection of movies from directors nearly as well known for their scandals as for their films.

Roman Polanski new feature, The Palace, scored an out-of-competition slot, as did Coup de Chance, the latest feature from Woody Allen. And Luc Besson will premiere his new feature, DogMan, in competition in Venice. All three filmmakers have been the focus of abuse allegations and, in the wake of #MeToo, the targets of online attacks and cancellation campaigns. Though Polanski, who fled the U.S. in 1978 after being convicted of sexually assaulting a teen girl, is the only one...

Chris Pratt and Yvonne Strahovski in The Tomorrow War (2021)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: July 2021
Chris Pratt and Yvonne Strahovski in The Tomorrow War (2021)
It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.

That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.

In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

Woody Allen’s ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ Approved for Release by China Censors
Image
Chinese censors may search content obsessively for what they deem to be objectionable material, but they apparently don’t consider a film’s off-screen controversy quite as closely.

At a time when China is booting major films like “Nomadland” or “Monster Hunter” from cinemas for perceived “insults to China,” its authorities have green lit Woody Allen’s troubled “A Rainy Day in New York” for theatrical release in the world’s largest film market.

Although a few of Allen’s films, such as “Midnight in Paris” and 2012’s “To Rome with Love,” have screened at the Shanghai Intl. Film Festival, “Rainy Day” will mark Allen’s first proper theatrical release in the country.

Its debut will make China only the third country to release the title in the wake of the pandemic, and the first to do so in wake of last month’s HBO doc miniseries “Allen v. Farrow,...

Woody Allen Lashes Out at ‘Foolish’ Actors Who Won’t Work With Him Again
Woody Allen at an event for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Woody Allen lashed out at all the actors who have publicly condemned him in recent years and expressed regret about having worked on his films — or refuse to act for him again.

“I think they’re well-meaning but they’re foolish,” the filmmaker said in a new CBS News interview released on Paramount+ Sunday. “All they’re doing is they’re persecuting a perfectly innocent person and they’re enabling this lie.”

In the interview, which was recorded last July after the publication of Allen’s memoir “Apropos of Nothing,” Allen repeated his previous denials that he had sexually molested his then-7-year-old daughter Dylan Farrow in 1992. The accusations, which were investigated at the time, resurfaced in mid-2010s and led many to take a public stand against the filmmaker — particularly after the emergence of the #MeToo movement in 2017.

Stars such as Kate Winslet (“Wonder Wheel”), Mira Sorvino (“Mighty Aphrodite...

First Look at Roberto Benigni as Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s ‘Pinocchio’
HanWay Films has released a first-look image of Oscar-winning actor/director Roberto Benigni as Mastro Geppetto in the live-action version of “Pinocchio,” directed by Matteo Garrone, which has started shooting in Italy.

Garrone’s ambitious pic, which will mark Benigni’s return to the big screen after a seven-year hiatus, started principal photography March 18, with an 11-week shoot planned in Tuscany, Puglia, and the Lazio region around Rome.

Benigni, who won an Oscar for best actor in 1999 for “Life Is Beautiful,” which he also directed, last appeared in a cameo in Woody Allen’s “To Rome With Love” in 2012. In recent years, the beloved Italian showman has been active with his stage adaptation of Dante’s “Divine Comedy,” which toured in Italy and internationally.

News last October of Benigni’s casting to play Geppetto in Garrone’s “Pinocchio” came shortly after the announcement that Guillermo del Toro is making a...

So Many Pinocchios: How Matteo Garrone Says His Will Differ From Guillermo del Toro’s and Disney’s
Mel Blanc, Walter Catlett, Frankie Darro, Cliff Edwards, Dickie Jones, Charles Judels, Clarence Nash, Christian Rub, and Evelyn Venable in Pinocchio (1940)
As of this week, there are three different versions of the classic fairy tale “Pinocchio” in development. No lie.

First there’s Disney’s live-action remake of their 1940 animated classic. And between juggling directors and screenwriters over the years, let’s just say it’s got a lot of strings attached. The second project, just announced on Monday, is a passion project from Guillermo del Toro that he’s had on the shelf since 2012 at least, an animated, stop-motion musical that is now being set up at Netflix.

So that leaves Matteo Garrone, the director of the gritty mob drama “Gomorrah,” the surreal fairy tale “Tale of Tales,” and Italy’s Foreign Language Oscar submission for 2019, “Dogman.” We asked him how his version of “Pinocchio,” just announced Friday, is different enough to be taken seriously as a real boy, and what he thinks of all the other versions of the wooden puppet fable out there.

Oscar-Winner Roberto Benigni to Play Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s ‘Pinocchio’
Roberto Benigni at an event for Pinocchio (2002)
Roberto Benigni, who won an Oscar for best actor in 1999 for “Life Is Beautiful,” is set to return to the big screen after a seven-year hiatus to play Mastro Geppetto in a live-action version of “Pinocchio” to be directed by Matteo Garrone.

Shooting on the previously announced film is set to start in the first quarter of 2019 on location in Italy’s Lazio, Tuscany and Puglia regions.

The casting of Benigni as Geppetto in Garrone’s live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio” was announced Friday, just days after the news that Guillermo del Toro is to make a stop-motion animated musical version for Netflix of Carlo Collodi’s classic about a puppet that comes to life. In 2002, Benigni directed and played the lead role in his own live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio,” which flopped at the U.S. box office.

Benigni’s last directorial effort is “The Tiger and the Snow,” in 2005, in which he also starred.

Javier Bardem Blasts ‘Public Lynching’ of ‘Genius’ Woody Allen
Javier Bardem
Javier Bardem has once again spoken out about the “public lynching” of Woody Allen in regards to the longstanding accusations of sexual misconduct against the filmmaker.

“At the time I did ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’, the allegations were already well known for more than 10 years, and two states in the U.S. deemed he was not guilty,” Bardem said at the Lumiere Festival in Lyon on Tuesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “If the legal situation ever changes, then I’d change my mind. But for now, I don’t agree with the public lynching that he’s been receiving, and if Woody Allen called me to work with him again I’d be there tomorrow morning. He’s a genius.”

In April, the Spanish actor said he was “shocked” by the treatment of Allen, and said that he was “absolutely not” ashamed to have worked with him on the 2008 film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Night Of The Lepus (1972)
Over the decades creatures both great, small, and in between have been given the horror treatment; from disease ridden rodents to gargantuan lizards (and the occasional chicken), no critter has been pushed aside in the pursuit of onscreen terror. And I mean none. Because in the ‘70s everything was fair game, which is how you end up with Night of the Lepus (1972), a wrongheaded Animals Attack flick that is a lot of fun despite its ludicrous premise. Beware the…rabbits?

Released by MGM in October, Lepus pulled in nearly $4 million against a $900,000 budget, making it a success with crowds while leaving critics foaming at the mouth. Reviews were unkind, to say the least: in fact, the film has the reputation in certain circles as being one of the worst of all time; which is subjective of course, but since it’s my column, I’ll just call that a big ol’ stack of bunny biscuits.

Penélope Cruz 'Not Clear' About Woody Allen Sexual Abuse Allegations
Penélope Cruz
Penélope Cruz is speaking out about the decades-old sexual abuse allegations against Woody Allen.

“The only answer that I can give you with common sense that is not about a headline is, the case has to be looked at again,” Cruz told Vanity Fair at the 11th annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at New Jersey’s Liberty State Park on Saturday.

“The important thing is, if there is a case anywhere in the world that isn’t clear, then why not look at it again? I am in favor of that,” she added.

Say Goodbye to Your Childhood - Netflix Is Getting Rid of a Ton of Disney Movies
Every month, Netflix goes through its catalog and purges a few titles, but I have to say, next month is going to hit me especially hard. In May, the streaming service is getting rid of a ton of my favorite Disney Channel original movies. The Cheetah Girls franchise? Gone. The Camp Rock movies? No more. Even underrated hits like Jump In! and Read It and Weep are being scrubbed from Netflix. The only solace I have is that High School Musical 3 - arguably the best HSM movie - will be available soon. Get ready to say goodbye to your childhood as these Disney movies (and many more classics) disappear from your queue forever.

Javier Bardem ‘Shocked’ Over Woody Allen Treatment
Javier Bardem
Javier Bardem is “shocked” by the treatment of Woody Allen and said he has “doubts” about the longstanding allegations of sexual misconduct against the filmmaker.

In an interview with French newspaper Paris Match, the actor, who starred in Allen’s 2008 film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” said he’s “absolutely not” ashamed to have worked with him.

“If there was evidence that Woody Allen was guilty, then yes, I would have stopped working with him, but I have doubts,” Bardem said, according to People. “I am very shocked by this sudden treatment. Judgments in the states of New York and Connecticut found him innocent. The legal situation today is the same as in 2007.”

Several stars of Allen’s films have publicly said that they would not work with the director again in the wake of resurfaced allegations of sexual assault by his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow, and her mother, Mia Farrow. Among those are “Wonder Wheel” actor David Krumholtz, who said he “deeply” regrets working with the filmmaker on his most recent film, calling it one of his “most heartbreaking mistakes.”

Greta Gerwig also said she will never work for Allen again and wouldn’t have starred in his 2012 movie “To Rome With Love” had she known about the accusations against him. Peter Sarsgaard, who starred in Allen’s 2013 film “Blue Jasmine,” said he would turn down another chance to work with the director.

Allen has been accused of sexual assault by his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow, an allegation for which he was investigated in 1992 but never charged. Allen has denied the allegations, calling it an invention of Farrow’s mother, actress Mia Farrow. They accusations were brought back to the public’s attention when Farrow detailed her experience in an open letter in the New York Times in 2014.

In December, she published a new op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, in which she called out Kate Winslet, Blake Lively and Gerwig for working with Allen amidst the accusations.

A spokesperson for Bardem has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Wes Anderson
The 5 Biggest Indie Auteurs at the Box Office: Wes Anderson, PTA, and More
Wes Anderson
Where studio distributors have tentpole titles, specialized releasing has platform princes. These filmmakers are intellectual property: They will never produce blockbusters, at least not in the traditional sense, but their names trigger a passionate, arthouse fanbase eager to devour their work. And in the kingdom ruled by per-theater averages, Wes Anderson is the crown prince.

Dozens of directors have found massive success with a platform release: Clint Eastwood, Darren Aronofsky, Jason Reitman, Tom Hooper, Steven Spielberg, the Coen Brothers, Richard Linklater, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. Other directors to achieve over $100,000 per-theater averages in the last decade include Kevin Smith, Damian Chazelle, Morten Tyldum, Terence Malick, Lee Daniels, Luca Guadagnino, and Barry Jenkins. (Among women, Kathryn Bigelow came closest with “Zero Dark Thirty.”)

However, Anderson is among the few whose work consistently thrives not only in its initial limited release, but also expands to find a larger audience. That’s rare; in my film-buying days,...

Rebecca Hall Regrets Working With Woody Allen; Donates Salary To Time’s Up Movement
Just last week Greta Gerwig released a statement regarding her past work with Woody Allen in the film “To Rome With Love,” saying she deeply regretted working with the 82-year-old director. Why? Well, Allen has been scuffled in years of controversy involving Dylan Farrow, his longtime partner Mia’s daughter, who has, countless times, alleged that Allen molested her for years. Now that the #MeToo movement is in full-surge, it seems like Allen’s past has resurfaced as a hot-button issue.
